I love sushi. I have been to many different sushi places, all over the United States and I can honestly say that Union Sushi and Barbecue Bar was THE best sushi place I have been to. I had the Sashimi Cup, Philly Roll, Godzilla Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, and Crispy Salmon Skin Roll- all of which were AMAZING. You can tell the fish is super fresh- it practically melts in your mouth. So good. We also had the spare ribs, alligator, Japanese curry chicken and beef fillet (yes, we had quite a bit of variety) all of which were also amazing. I don't even like meat and I absolutely loved all of them. If you like sushi, or food, or amazing atmosphere, or anything just go here. Seriously.
Great food, great Moscow Mules. The rolls and sliders were full of flavor. I recommend the black rice added to the rolls for a little different texture.
I’ve been meaning to review this restaurant but keep forgetting. Here goes. We absolutely look forward to dining here every time we visit Chicago. This is our go-to place. The various specialty rolls and sashimi dishes are great. Top it off with delicious BBQ skewers and some great sake and we’ve got an evening that everyone loves. The staff is friendly and efficient. It can get a little loud inside the restaurant at times but the noise level has not stopped us from coming here.
They had solid veggie options and offered the ability to easily swap out the seafood for sweet potato, mushrooms, etc. the truffle roll was amazing and the fish was super fresh. Great sushi spot!
Didn't come here expecting much but had a great meal - wonderful service and food. We tried a salad, grilled lamb and eggplant, sushi roll, and fish collar. A few interesting Japanese beers for variety. Just moved to this part of town a few months ago and this is one of the better finds in the area. Looking forward to our next visit.
It’s a creative place with a variety of interesting dishes. Their cocktails are some of the best I’ve had in the USA. Their grill tastes like a real charcoal grill which is an extremely rare and pleasant surprise for me.
But. The food is worse than I would want from a place with these prices. Short rib skewer, despite tasting like a charcoal grill, was unchewable. Some of nigiris that we had were too cold and watery, like how just recently unfrozen fish would feel. They have a lot of space to improve, but I still think it’s 5 stars, and I will definitely come back.
Fun lively scene here. I usually have the most fun sitting at the sushi bar. Robata grill gets wayyy too hot!
If I could give this place 6+ stars I would. It was a beautiful representation of a nice modern look and gave the restaurant a warm home like vibe. When we first walked in they immediately took us up within a minute of getting there. They were so welcoming and after sitting down for a few minutes before even getting the food, my whole family said that they already liked it there because the service was so good. This place is perfect for all ages. Our waitress was perfect and she was super quick. The music was kid friendly and the restaurant had a dark look, so it felt cozy. Great for any occasion big or small and not extremely pricey either. When receiving the food and eating it, my mouth was in love. The presentation was awesome and the food was phenomenal. This is now going to be a go to place for everyone. Even the dessert was delicious. Highly recommend!
I love this place! Such a fun vibe and amazing food. I like that they play music here but it's not super loud.
The food is fresh, flavorful, and delicious. It is presented as well. We tried the Tuna Tataki, Miso Soup, Shishito Peppers, Madai Chili, Hotate Volcano , and Mentaiko Scallops. Each dish was a 10/10. Both the sushi rolls madai chili and hotate volcano were outstanding and each had 10 pieces. The Tuna Tataki is a must try. The scallops were perfectly cooked and loved the sauce on it.
The service is great and the food arrives quickly. Our server was super sweet and friendly and made me the best mocktail- Raspberry.

The black sushi rice is fantastic. Fish is always fresh. Nice that they also have hot BBQ/grill items to try.
They have great Japanese Whisky options and the lychee martini is perfect.
Try out the fresh wasabi. It's s more crumbly and dry. Much better than the green paste.
First time dining here and we were impressed with the experience.

They have both seafood and meats from the grille, we did the salmon app which was excellent. Followed by lamb shank (get this!), short rib kabob which was good but only a few bites of food. Lastly we had one sushi roll, which comes with 10 pieces and was very fresh and had some good spice to it.

We had a small bottle of sake and a mezcal cocktail a piece. The service was amazing and they were attentive and food came out incredibly quick.

Amazing food. Went for dinner today with my husband. Every item we ordered was delicious. We got the zucchini & shrimp skewers for appetizer and did not make a picture as we ate right away 😄 And I got Salmon Lover sushi rolls it was their special today and my hub got a Hotate Volcano ( it was so delicious, I was not eating Volcano roll , but Salmon Lovers, was something I never experienced before. You should try it if you love salmon:)
The service was also good. Our server was polite and easily available. The restaurant had a cool vibe inside , but we were sitting at the front so we can watch cooks, but every time someone was walking in /out it was a bit cold, thats a head up for those who like to be warm all the time ha ha. But I was ok:)
I am so happy with our meal, I don’t feel I over ate, food was light and yummy. I cannot wait to come back again in the future!
