Review Blue Door Kitchen & Garden - Chicago

Love going to this place. First of all because the staff is amazing as well as the food that they serve. The devils eggs are amazing, as are their trout and jambalaya dishes. The outside patio makes it all complete. Want to call out Daisy and Domenica who are always providing the best possible service. They are phenomenal hosts and true professionals at everything that they do.

Cute little spot. Upscale southern cooking. Came for brunch on a Saturday. The food was delicious and the staff were attentive. Good quality ingredients. I alway appreciate a Chicago restaurant that puts just as much effort in their food as they do to their aesthetics. I was not a fan of the beignets, it was chewy. Next will need to get the Mac and Cheese cause I heard it’s phenomenal! Only issue we had was a constant cold breeze. We sat near the back by the kitchen and the staff kept opening a door in the back that let in a cold breeze (it was 30 deg day). So try to sit near the front if possible.

Food is super good for brunch. Brunch def has more options and more reasonable prices. Fried chicken was crispy and juicy and those waffles were amazing. The fried chicken Benny was also amazing. Very flavorful. Mac n cheese w the sausage Is good too. Nice little side. Would come here again!

I did love this place, great patio and a great menu! My first note was the cocktail, super well balanced and just a fun cocktail! We ordered the braised beef and the duck and those were good but not super great. While both dishes were cooked well, we found that we had to salt a lot of our food. Both my potatoes and green beans didn’t taste of anything at all. However, once we salted them, we tasted way more flavour in all the dishes. Will definitely give it another shot but if it remains the same, not entirely worth the price to me.

The food was good the chef was amazing great ambiance the patio area was beautiful. Our server she was not attentive to our table but she was to all her other tables she has. But the other guy who was not our server took care of us more than she did. We stopped in because our mother just passed away and it was close by so stopped in if it wasn't for the overall ambiance and his attentive service and the love and care from the chef I would say I wouldn't make a point to come back. But I will because despite her they made our experience good for our 1st time visit and the FOOD WAS AMAZING 😊!! HATS OFF TO THE CHEF 👨‍🍳

Garden space = So cute. Deviled Eggs = 5 star, you’ll want more. Shrimp & Grits = the best tomato sauce I’ve ever had. The Chef = What a nice and friendly dude!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Blue Door Kitchen & Garden, and I must say, it was a truly exceptional experience. From the moment I stepped through the blue door, I was greeted with warm hospitality and a charming atmosphere that set the stage for an unforgettable evening. The first thing that struck me was the stunning ambiance of the restaurant. The rustic yet elegant interior design, combined with the soft lighting and carefully selected decor, created a cozy and inviting atmosphere. It felt like stepping into a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of the city. The menu at Blue Door Kitchen & Garden is a true testament to their commitment to using only the freshest and highest quality ingredients. Each dish was thoughtfully crafted, showcasing a perfect balance of flavors and textures. The presentation was nothing short of spectacular, with each plate resembling a work of art. The knowledgeable and attentive staff at Blue Door Kitchen & Garden further enhanced the dining experience. From our knowledgeable server to the friendly sommelier, every member of the team went above and beyond to ensure our satisfaction. They were more than willing to offer suggestions and accommodate any dietary preferences or restrictions. One standout aspect of Blue Door Kitchen & Garden is their commitment to supporting local farmers and sustainable practices. The emphasis on farm-to-table cuisine was evident in every bite, and it was refreshing to know that I was supporting a restaurant that values ethical sourcing and environmental stewardship. I also had the pleasure of speaking with the chef, who exuded passion and creativity. He took the time to personally explain the inspiration behind each dish and even shared some culinary tips and tricks. This level of engagement and transparency truly added a personal touch to the overall dining experience. In conclusion, Blue Door Kitchen & Garden is a hidden gem that should not be missed. The combination of delectable cuisine, impeccable service, and a welcoming atmosphere creates an experience that is nothing short of extraordinary. Whether you're looking for a romantic dinner, a celebratory meal, or simply a memorable dining experience, Blue Door Kitchen & Garden is the perfect destination. I can't wait to return and explore more of their culinary delights.

Beautiful interior, very nice staff! The watermelon feta salad was excellent I would go back based on the corn bread appetizer alone. I would get a different meal next time. Their BDK burger is disappointing. Lacked flavor, the bun was soggy, the aioli lacked flavor. The fries are incredible. Want to try chicken and eggs benedict.

We had a great brunch on the beautiful outside patio. Max was professional, kind, and had great recommendations! Definitely a great place to stop into.

This is one of our favorite patios. We were here in August. Beautiful outdoor space with flowers and birds. We were one of the first there when it opened so we’re able to get a good spot on the patio. Was very busy by the time we left. Server was knowledgeable and helpful when we were undecided between a few different meals. Can’t wait until it’s warm so we can go again.

Not the coldest of nights, but who turns down comforting food inside someones charming cozy house? Dined here this evening with my girl Tavi J. The setting: blue door entry, many marble square tables with velvety cushioned chairs and gray banquettes. Paintings on the walls, reminds you of someones house down south. Server: Vince? (I think), gave us the schpeal. Farm to table concept, sourcing ingredients from "Blue Door Farm" (makes sense), a previously owned Oprah farm. Menu changes with the seasons (as it always should with this concept). The menu is short but sweet. Not overwhelming. Restaurant is busy enough, on a Sunday at 5:30/6. I ordered a Mezcal Mule. Bright and grapefruit pink in color over not perfect but large enough cubes. Mezcal, blackberry shrub (fruit syrup), lime, and ginger beer. Nice kick, smokey approach, while quenching and fruity. Heart. I went for the smaller options so that I could have a comforting potluck try tonight. Celery Root & Apple Soup, wild rice, leek, and pickled mustard seed. Thick, temperature hot, comforting on a winter evening. Loved the wild rice underneath, perfect just almost al dente texture and married well with the soup. The tartness of the apple was the perfect amount of acidity. Onto the brussel sprouts with pear sticks, pine nuts and Pecorino. Sauteed on the flat sides, and crunchy enough for me without being undercooked. Plentiful on the toasted pine nuts and the cheese, but the pear matchsticks were a little unusual, and probably could have been kept out for my liking. The sorghum and milk braised pork belly came in squared slices with a drizzle of sauce, persimmon and pomegranate (2016's favorite accompaniment). I appreciated the tenderness of the pork, however, the sorghum, and maybe it was the persimmon combo that took over the dish by being a tad bit too sweet. The pomegranate seeds themselves added a nice crunch and pop. I took an order of the mac and cheese and a slice of Hummingbird cake to go. As I'm writing this review, I'll say, wth happened to the mac and cheese? Somebody shook it like a salt shaker on the kitchen dance floor way too much. Hello Dead Sea. I think tomorrow I'll reheat it with some more pasta and maybe a touch of milk, as the cheese is completely coagulated. The cake itself is moist, but there seems to be more more butter than cream cheese (the "cream cheese icing"), and you'll see from the photo that it's clearly not happy being stuck against its neighbor, as it's pulling away (the cake)... Definitely would have enjoyed more of the pineapple chunks (only two in the to go box) (compressed pineapple perhaps?) and the crumble as well. Pricing? Decent, going with three of the small dishes and a drink alone was about $35 without tip.

Made a reservation for a nice dinner with the ladies here. The ambiance is perfect. Not too dark and not too bright, perfect for taking pictures of your food if you are a foodie like me! ;) Ron was our server and he was excellent! Made great recommendations for the cocktails and was very hospitable. We ordered quite a bit from the menu. The beets and carrots was a perfect dish to start. Nice and refreshing- a delicious crunch from the nuts. The fried chicken was so tender and flavorful! Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The braised short rib and NY strip steak were also pretty delicious. The flavors were well balanced and meats were nicely seasoned. Can't forget the lamb chops, it was also really good- do recommend all what I have mentioned! As for sides, we chose the brussel sprouts with pear as well as the bacon potatoes. Goodness, they were deliocus! Last but not least, dessert. We selected the 3 cheese cheesecake and apple cobbler. The 3 cheese cheesecake is hands down my favorite-- so decadent, light, and airy. It has a pretzel crust so you have a nice balance of salty and sweet. I can go on and on about the food and service, but I should just end here and make whoever is reading this decide to try it out~ :) Thank you Blue Door Kitchen & Garden!

Wonderful experience. Sat at the bar first for a glass of wine as we waited to be seated outside. The bartenders were awesome! The outdoor space was exactly what we need in Chicago too. Our server was fantastic. Food was very tasty, full of flavor. Truly enjoyed the recommended Hummingbird Cake dessert. Definitely coming back!

I would not return. The service was absolutely terrible. The food was good but when my fiancee was told the kitchen could not create something for my vegetarian fiancee, even though it is a scratch kitchen, all I could think about is that Art Smith would be appalled. My philosophy is whether or not the food is fantastic, if the service is bad I would never return and cannot recommend.

Really enjoyed our brunch yesterday. After a rocky start with a misunderstanding regarding our reservation, Vince, the manager, and his staff more than made up for it with free appetizers (the beignets were awesome) followed by outstanding chicken and waffles. We finished the meal off with a piece of their speciality Hummingbird cake which is a must-have. I'm not a big spice cake fan, but this was on an entirely different level. Can't wait to go back!

Wonderful cozy place for a family dinner. We missed the outside because of winter but would love to go back in summer to enjoy that outdoor space. With a small menu, and great service this place is definitely recommended.

I found about this place via Thrillist which is always my "go to" source of info! It was listed as one of the best outside patio's in Chicago. My boyfriend and I were not disappointed! We made a reservation and could of been seated right away but I wanted to wait to dine on the garden patio. We waited all of 30 min and they texted us when our table was ready. The inside was nicely decorated, small but chic! The service was excellent! I am very big on customer service and it exceeded my expectations. The two hostesses were nice and our waitress, Lauren was amazing! She was very attentive and always sensed the right time to come back and check on us. The hummus and sweet potato chips (complimentary) were delicious. I have never tried hummus before and it was good! I ordered the fish and chips and the Berry cooler. It was different but pretty good. FISH AND CHIPS are a MUST! Cooked to perfection. My bf had the Grapefruit smash and he really liked it! He ordered the scallops which only came with 3 but he ordered the fish and chips long with it. Dessert- Hummingbird cake (OMG!!! So huge and tasty!) We had to take the rest home. This cake is definitely enough for 3 people. Excellent restaurant. So happy it's in my neighborhood! I will return very soon!

Smells from my childhood greeted us as we walked in, the decor is nothing short of lovely, Dustin, our server, was the very incranation of perfect and the menu was beyond words from cocktails with the Jackolope Hunter to dessert with coffee and hummingbird cake. Raised on the food of two southren grandma I know comfort food and Blue Door Kitchen and Garden is excellent!!

Lovely atmosphere/decor. Attentive service. One of our meals was wonderful but the other was aweful. I had a deliscious shrimp salad grilled sandwich and the beet and feta salad. Both were deliscious. My daughter however, had a very dry and tasteless fried chicken sandwich. The chicken was over an inch thick, with thick tasteless breading. The bun it was on had an unusual flavor. The fries were fine. I would return because of the adorable interior, but stay away from the chicken !

This is a very quaint but elegant place. It feels like your in someone's kitchen or living room. The staff were very friendly excellent service. I ordered scallops which were delicious. Will definitely go back again. It was busy but we never felt rushed.

The food and the staff were sensational! Great and comfy dining area and patio! We will become regulars!

I love the room and the great service. I was excited because the fried chicken was still on the menu but it wasn’t Art Smith’s fried chicken. I am told that he is still around but it looks like he is delegating too much. Missed the mashed sweet potatoes with honey too!

Blue Door is outstanding in every respect. Atmosphere (especially the courtyard), service, quality of the food as well as the variety, and very fair prices. We just live the place!

Arguably the best egg Benedict we have tried in Chicago. Eggs were poached to perfection, the Hollandaise sauce was not overwhelming and the ham was cured in house. Impeccable service. Love! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Amazing food! Great place to eat even if it's just a quick stop for drinks and appetizers!

I saw this restaurant on 'best thing I ever ate' where the fried chicken was featured. Being my fiancée is a fried chicken but, I had to make reservations for when we were in town. The restaurant is nestled in a gorgeous neighborhood. The interior was old world elegant and beautiful. Staff was knowledgeable and incredibly pleasant. The food? The food was incredible! Austin had the fried chicken and waffles- juiciest chicken ever, and I had the short ribs with Yukon gold mashers.... Could be my favorite meal ever. Thanks so much for an amazing experience!
