by far this is the Best BBQ in the area! i am not from Virginia and a good BBQ place is hard to find in my humble opinion. These guys put just the right amount of BBQ sauce on the meat. the sauce does not overpower the meat. i find it to be a great balance of flavor. the prices of the food are pretty good for the serving size.
Some of the best BBQ in Tidewater. Period. They only take cash though so be prepared. Mmmmm Mmmmmm Good!!!
I stopped here due to a traffic jam, and I didn’t have much hope based on the look and location. However, the pulled pork bbq sandwich was really good! The fries were average, but they were hot and fresh. The service was friendly and fast! I’m surprised by this location and may stop again for good take out bbq.
Came all the way from Florida for some real bar b que. Not really,, but Hadn't been in VA for awhile so did a Google search for best bar b que in Chesapeake. Johnson's came up. Super nice customer service. Covid protocol great. Smoker in the lot which I smelled at the light b4 I turned in. Yum yum. Bought a full rack and potatoe salad and collards on the side. I miss VA bar b que...this made me 😊. 2 thumbs 👍 👍. I will be riding back with a slab. Yup.
I give a 5 because this is the best bbq you can find in Hampton Roads. Being from the south I have a certain expectation from food and I must say VA just is NOT it when it comes to food but this place has good bbq. Not the fanciest place but it's good. And with or without the sauce the flavor is still there.
Had 1/2 rack ribs and the pulled pork sandwich special with bacon and cheese fries. Ribs were tender with an excellent BBQ sauce. You can definitely taste the hickory in the meat. Service was great, place was clean and good was great. Defenitly will stop in again. Great prices for the portions you get. I couldn't eat all of my ribs and had to take some home .
Awesome BBQ! These are the small places you find that have the best bbq. The customer service is 10 stars worthy. While visiting from out of town I found Johnson's bbq. I had the pulled pork sandwich and brisket sandwich. Make sure to get them with coleslaw. The baked beans are very tasty. Their take home menu is printed on some great material. They only take cash, no cards.
CASH ONLY! Located in what feels like an abandoned shopping center. It's a small corner restaurant of a strip establishment. Extremely small dining room with outdated tables and chairs. Feels dirty ONLY because it's old and cluttered, but it was actually clean. The walls are covered with photos and plaques. The room is cluttered with trophies, tables, a printer, and holiday decorations. They do offer booster seats, which were stacked along a wall. The staff was polite and quick with my order. Seemed like a family establishment. The menu was old and difficult to read with missing letters. Someone was actually printing menus while I was there. Prices are reasonable, cost only $33 for 2 dinners, 2 sandwiches, and 1 side. I had the chopped pork with fries and beans. The pork had few fat pieces, which I loved. Large portion. Sweet bbq sauce. I'm a Carolina bbq fan, so I prefer vinegar based bbq. But this was a great bbq plate. The fries were seasoned and fried just right. The beans had pineapple, which I've never had before but it was rather tasty. Another ordered the 3 piece bbq chicken with beans and potato salad. The chicken was so tender and seasoned perfectly. Large portions. Potato salad was creamy and tasted great. Overall, good meal and pleasant staff. Just a small, old, crowded building.
I have been a customer three times. The collard greens and potatoe salad portions are small but they make up for it with the meat portions. The ribs are so delicious. The two gentleman who manage the business are courteous, friendly, and professional.
