Purlieu is a must when in Charleston, SC. Its relaxing atmosphere lends itself to a charming spin on french cuisine and comfort food. Most will go for the burger, which is not to be overlooked, however, venture out and start your evening with the Frog Leg Tarte and or the Rabbit Rillet and you will be pleasantly surprised. The detail and presentation that goes into each dish matches the taste of these savory dishes and prices are moderate. Hats off to John Zucker and Jeff Williams, as well as their staff for delivering such a breath of fresh air in such a diverse culinary city that is Charleston, SC .
First visit to Purlieu and we loved it. Small, cozy French cafe/restaurant. The staff is professional (thanks Allison) and the atmosphere is friendly. We started with a shared plate of artichoke au gratin with garlic butter baguette. Amazingly creamy and delicious. I had the Snapper with black lintels and Kathy had the steak Oscar. My snapper was delicious and Kathy's steak was perfect. The portions were just right. I think this may be one of my new favorites. And for us West Ashley folks, it's just across the bridge close to Citadel's stadium so it's a quick trip without having to get into the King Street chaos.
Visiting this place was definitely the highlight of my trip to Charleston. I've tried most of the restaurants on the peninsula but this place over delivered. To begin with, the food is absolutely delicious. The presentation is charming. The service is excellent: Nate the manager gave us a very warm welcome and made sure everything was alright. Alexandra the server was very sweet too. It was undoubtedly a five stars experience and I would surely visit it again if I ever get the chance to do that.
This restaurant is not to be missed by tourists or locals! The shrimp gnocchi was the perfect starter. Saucy and satisfying. I had the burger based on a recommendation ( normally wouldn't order a burger with the other delicious sounding options). Very glad I did as it was scrumptious! Flavorful and the perfect size. The lemon dessert was the perfect ending. Casey answered our multiple questions w expertise and kindness. She obviously is a professional and loves her job! Great food and great service has me already thinking about returning and definitely recommending! Well done Purlieu!
If I could give 6 stars I would. This is the definition of "hidden gem" for Charleston. The places that you have to seek out...that are slightly off the beaten path end up rewarding you handsomely. Having dined at pretty much at all the usual suspects (Fig, 167 raw, XBB, R Kitchen, Tratoria Lucca, The Ordinary) I have to say that Purlieu deserves to rank among the cities best.
Everything about our experience was what a perfect dinning experience should be. From the charming interior(slightly cozy, can be loud at times) to the down to earth staff (Alexandra and Tav) to the inexpensive solid wine list and local draft beers (munkle, revelery, lofi) fires on all cylinders. Sometimes the aforementioned can make up for missteps in the food, but no need here.....The food is just as wonderful all all the supporting cast. The artichoke is standout app, the burger is better than Little Jacks, and the Roast Chicken is better than mom's(sorry mom).
I was hesitant to write this review selfishly wanting to keep this sweet slice of heaving in my back pocket. However the crew here deserve to be known and it would be a crime not to share this wonderful place with fellow holycity food lovers.
The wait staff was incredibly knowledgeable, helpful and all around awesome! The food was just as amazing!!
Worth the short Uber ride. Small very French restaurant. Loved the food and the friendly atmosphere.
Small French Bistro with great food and good wait staff. Just wine and good food.
Fabulous food, service, and ambiance. Small restaurant with a lot of character. Bonus for sitting at the Chef's table.
Get the chicken!!! I enjoyed every morsel of my food. It was expensive, but delicious and unusual. Service was great and we were seated exactly on time. It's small... When we first arrived it was extremely loud, but after a few tables turned over, it became tolerable. I would ding a point off for this... but the food was SO good, I can't ding them!
Update....You know how sometimes you love a restaurant , can't wait to go back , and then when you FINALLY get there it's a disappointment..... Well, that was NOT the case here . I enjoyed the chicken as much the second time as the first and my husband thoroughly enjoyed his snapper! CAN'T WAIT FOR THE THIRD VISIT!
While dining in is not an option right now, Purlieu makes ordering online and pickup super easy. Ordered burgers and fries which were amazing. Fresh bread with two patties and perfect balance of sweet peppers and sauce. Messy and delicious. The slice of chocolate cake has layers yummy goodness and was large enough for two. Looking forward to eating here again soon!
Our meal was excellent, everything was beautifully prepared! Our only complaint was the lack of acoustics, (very loud for a place with only 25 seats), and the setting sun was blinding for a period of time. But, we will definitely be back. This was one of the best meals we've ever had in Charleston, highly recommend!
