Review Gaulart & Maliclet French Cafe - Charleston

TLDR; everything is perfect here, but stay away from the chocolate fondue. Absolutely loved the food here. Their sandwiches are so so good and so reasonably priced that I would come here every day of the week if I lived in Charleston. We came in twice - once for lunch and once for dinner. Ordered the croq monsieur and the Provençal for lunch - absolutely no regrets here. Highly recommend both. For dinner we got the Burgundy Champignon, Goat Toast and another round of sandwiches with the broccoli soup - everything was excellent as expected. However the chocolate fondue really stained my experience here - the flavors were odd and the chocolate didn’t feel rich.

Stopped for a quick bite to eat while I was touring around Downtown. It’s quite the chic place! My server, Chris, was very friendly towards me and every other patron that walked in. I ordered the Enfant Terrible, which originally comes on sourdough, but they had ran out. Thankfully, choosing the croissant was a wise choice for a substitute! I’ll definitely check this place out again during future visits.

Fast and French is a great spot to take a lunch break! Delicious and fresh food served quickly with a casual European feel. I like the wine selection, coffee, soups and sandwiches. Convenient location for locals or tourists to enjoy. I have been coming here for years and will be back.

Lovely little spot for lunch! Took the kids and enjoyed sandwiches and soups for a light lunch. We all were raving about the food we ordered. Several of my kids ordered the Croq Monsieur and thought it was delicious! We were also pleased at the vegan menu options. I ordered the lentil soup and another child ordered the vegan baguette (with an olive tapenade) and we had entree envy when we all tasted hers!

We loved this cute little restaurant. Staff was incredibly friendly. I had the bouillabaisse which was great. My husband got their chicken special. Wonderful atmosphere and great wine.

My wife and I walked here, as it was half a mile from our hotel near the market. We sat at the bar and bought a bottle of wine (Chateau du Trignon red Rhone). The server was very nice and helped us with wine and food choices. We started with the escargot. There were 12 pieces and served with slices of baguette. Very tasty. Then we had the bleu cheese fondue, which was heating up while we enjoyed the appetizer and wine. Bowls of bread and veggies (broccoli, carrot slices, and zucchini) to were served to dip. More than adequate for the two of us. It also came with soup or salad - we selected the chicken stew and enjoyed it. We loved this place and recommend it for small parties. We will go back if we visit Charleston again.

A unique place in an old building with lots of charm. We sat in a table that was tucked in a back alcove that was so secluded that it was basically a private room, but the servers never forgot about us so it was nice. The food was okay (nothing special) and the selection was kind of restrictive, but if you want more traditional breakfast stuff there are plenty of other places to go. The wait to get in was long even at an off time in the off season though, and the time estimate by the host wasn't accurate, so I shudder to think what it would be like during a more busy time

Good breakfast place serving typical French dishes. Coffee was good as well, could be sweeter for my taste. The MonteCristo sandwich for amazing, do definitely try that. Service was quirky but prompt. Prices are fair.

The atmosphere and food and service were all excellent at this restaurant. We gave it a chance when we tried to make a reservation elsewhere that was a two hour wait. In hindsight we would’ have chosen this restaurant over the other 1 million times over. Little individual tea pots, and honey pots made it extra special.

Delicious food and cute location! While my husband and I were in Charleston for our honeymoon we were just walking around looking for an easy and tasty brunch and we saw this place. It ended up being the most quaint little spot with French style cuisine. So fun and definitely picturesque! Coffee was also awesome! And I had my first experience with chilled soup and it did not disappoint!

We enjoyed a delicious late lunch at Fast and Fresh (which is what the staff call the restaurant). Our server Max was delightful. We enjoyed numerous versions of a croque monsieur. All were delicious. The portions were plenty and the price was low considering the quality and quantity of the meal. I would highly recommend a meal at Gaulart & Maliclet if you are in the area, we will definitely return when next in Charleston.

Not at all elegant but with a charm of its own. Food is French- style with an emphasis on bread, cheese, and fruit. A wide variety of soups. I had a vegetarian pea soup that was tasty, with vegetable chunks, French bread and a slice of some of the best honeydew melon I've ever had.

We had originally tried to go to another spot but too crowded. Walked further down and found this adorable spot! We walked in and were able to get a space at the bar. I think we had just beaten the lunchtime rush because about 25 min later, it was bustling with business! I got the French onion soup with a passion fruit Bellini followed by a raspberry sorbet mimosa. All super delicious! Only reason for 4/5 was the staff seemed so rushed and busy that it was hard to get their attention. I think they were a bit stressed which is understandable when trying to help many people who didn’t have reservations and were slightly impatient. I’d come back again!

Fast, French and fantastic. This place has been a Charleston iconic French resturant for decades. It was great than and still is great now. The perfect place for a date night, or just to enjoy some really good French cuisine. Be sure and try the cheese plate if you are a fan of the fromage.

Stopped by today for lunch and was really impressed with the quality vs. cost value. Very friendly and efficient service, and the food itself was fresh and delicious.

We stop here for lunch every time we’re in town and it never disappoints!! The sandwiches are always interesting and fresh as are the soups. The bread and croissants are perfect and the coffee press coffee is to die for. Fast & French is a Charleston must!

Great place to eat lunch! The menu was unique but simple. Everything we ate was to die for and what better way to wash down your lunch with a nice house wine all while not that expensive! The atmosphere was very quaint and modern with a great staff! I wished there was one in Houston. I Highly recommend this place!!

We were in Charleston for the Memorial Day weekend. We ate here for lunch our first day and we enjoyed the atmosphere, the people at the community tables, the staff and we loved the food and wine! Thus we went back for lunch on our last day. It is very reasonably priced and they have a very interesting menu. We recommend it highly!

Wonderful service, perfect lunch portioning, and importantly great tasting food. They do not require tipping, but if you do, they donate your tip to a nonprofit group. We have added this to our Charleston local fave.

Fast & French is consistently one of my top 5 lunch spots in town, which is saying considering I have been dining there for the past 17 years! We also enjoy the fondue night or stopping in for a quick dessert and glass of wine. All of the homemade soups are amazing!

Charleston delivered another gem, simple but flavorful foods. Croissants spread with hot goat cheese (OMG so good), lovely decadent deserts and a great soup... This was my first meal in Charleston and it delivered, the atmosphere was great.

My absolute favorite place in Charleston. The cheese and mustards alone will bring you back for more. The chicken du jour, the soups, the atmosphere and the amazing, friendly service ensure that I am totally hooked. Every date I bring always says how awesome this place is. The Fast and French, a place for everyone and where everyone finds their place.

Wonderful neighborhood establishment. Great food and staff

It was my first time visiting Charleston with family. We were just walking and we saw this place. It was small, but cozy, and unbelievably very nice people. The food is deliciously great and surprisingly reasonable price considering their location is in the heart of tourists area. And they do not accept tips. The moment we step off I called another family member and recommended this place. I will definitely come back here again.

They are the greatest! The patè is fabulous and their soups are so rich. No matter how many times I eat there, I am always pleasantly surprised at how they consistently they deliver quality food with a warm bistro "feel".
