I really, really, really want to love this place.
But... tonight I took my almost three-year-old daughter there for her very first slice ever of apple pie. She had read about it in a children's story and was really looking forward to it.
First, it was creepy. At 7 p.m., we waited a good five minutes before anyone acknowledged us, and then it was sort of vague as to where to sit.
Next, rather than a server appearing, the guy working behind the bakery counter took pity on us and asked what we wanted.
I explained our mission, and he returned, not with the warm pie with whipped cream described on the menu, but with a cold slice of apple pie with some sort of crumb topping and raspberry splotches on each side.
As it looked nothing like the pictures of normal apple pie that my child had seen, she wouldn't even touch it.
She made the right call. I tried it. It was cold and gluey. Gross.
It's so frustrating--this should be a sweet, easy peasy to run well institution.
But it fails like this repeatedly.
The best was when my poor overstretched husband paid out the nose to get me a birthday cake here, only to have my name misspelled when he picked it up.
Why, oh why, Melissa, can't you be sweet?

the scones weren't expensive, but they weren't particularly good either.
the prosciutto sandwich was a joke - the baguette was...pathetic. top loader? soft roll? salad dressing on the greens that were on the sandwich? calling it "ricotta and fig" when it's ricotta and fig *jam*? don't make me ask if you really put figs on the sandwich. cmon, son.
the english muffins for the eggs benedict were ever so mildly toasted that they were still...untoasted.
the bacon was good. as was the coffee.
french toast was enjoyed by others. i thought it sucked.

I stopped in here on the way to a friend's birthday party (trend here) and got a great cupcake. They couldn't be more pleasant when providing suggestions as to what to get for the picky friend and I was pleased with the final chocolate cupcake.
