Review Sans - Brooklyn

A friend and I are in town for just a few days and we came here our first night. We had such a delightful time we've decided to come back a second time. The location is serene without being ostentatious. The food was well thought out. Fresh. Balanced. Plated beautifully. And the server was knowledgeable and engaging. Don't even get me started on the cocktails!! So graceful and full of life. I'm sad to hear it will be closing in September due to loss of lease. Go while you can!! I will be following for the next time I come visit in the hopes they have a new spot to continue their amazingness. It is a true dining experience.

Early dinner before a movie. Excellent service and very friendly and attentive staff. Great wine pairing. Food was very good! Completely changed my view on flatbread! Very nice cocktails! Lovely atmosphere. Not too loud. Perfect for a date!

Tasty plates, in-house crafted cocktails, fantastic service! We can’t wait to come back and try the large plates and desert. Accommodated Gluten Free as well. Small team pulling double duty -host/server, bartender/server -with full restaurant and half bar still managed to explain dishes with succinct drop lines, folded napkins when guests left table, and send off menu goodies when you’re appreciative. Nothing not to love about the fabulous exploration into Vegan except that it ends in September.

Everything from the service to the quality of the food, was great. Very creative, well crafted dishes with beautiful presentation (but there is also a burger on the menu), well done cocktails and a nice curated wine list. Finally a true fine dining (vegan) restaurant . I do hope they stay after there 1 year residency.

I’m not a vegan or vegetarian. I do however love vegetables and I get excited to try them in new ways. My wife and I choose Sans as our first meal since getting married, and they did not disappoint. The service was friendly, but not stuffy. It was exactly what I would expect from a tasting menu restaurant in Carroll Gardens - experienced professionals giving warm neighborhood restaurant service. The food was inventive and delicious. My favorite was the onion dish, which was like a deconstructed onion ring that resembled the flavor of smokey mesquite BBQ chips in a much more refined way. It’s what I would imagine being on top of a steak, but made in such a way that you don’t even need the meat. The onion stands alone. The wine pairing was mostly local, which I appreciated. None of the wines were out of this world, but they did all pair nicely. There were some familiar Northfork names in there. At the end of the meal we enjoyed a nice fortified wine with dessert, which was a welcome surprise. I always love a neighborhood place where the food rivals that of much pricier and stuffier restaurants in the city. Although we learned that Sans is a temporary laboratory for a permanent spot elsewhere, we will definitely be back to take advantage of the changing and adventurous menu.

Been here 2 times now and quite enjoyed the food on both occasions. They mention that the menu keeps changing but I found the same menu for dinner both times I went about a month apart. Not that it takes away from the dining experience in any way. Apparently its going to be open only about a year so will try and visit a couple of more times to see if they've added new items. Anyway, on to the food. They've divided it into small plates and large and about 14-16 offerings in total if I remember correctly. Both times I went I found that that smaller plates were far superior to the larger plates, in my opinion. They aren't really that small either. The smashed and fried potatoes are fantastic, the brussels sprouts served with croutons are a treat and the dinner rolls practically melt in your mouth. The large plates were less impressive, I got the "rice and beans" both times which was okay. The charred onion was phenomenal the first time I had it but found it lacking the second time around. The pho was decent. Tried the donuts for desert once and they were pretty good. Staff is very friendly and service is solid. I'd go back definitely for the small plates, hopefully they add some new stuff for me to try.

I just turned vegan 🌱, and I heard about this place in The NY Times, I came in on Thursday 10/25, and I was breath taken. Everything from the food to the cocktail, to the wine list is phenomenal. I had the Maitake Flatbread and it was crunch appetizer cut with thin chives, oregano and finished with a Parm cream. I also had the Lasagna and I enjoyed it so much!! As for drinks if you love spicy vanilla margaritas I definitely recommend trying the “My Usual”. Their drinks remind me of the Nomad. As for wines they have a variety of unusual selections. They have a lightly sparkling Rose to die for. The servers were so nice, and explained everything really well. I live in Brooklyn and I will be returning soon to try all the cocktails!

Food was solid and creative. Burger: one of the better vegan ones I've had anywhere, at least among the faux-meat variety, as opposed to those that lean into being something else entirely, black bean, etc. Very rich flavors and great textures. Even the bun was above average. The smashed potatoes were some of the best taters I've had in awhile. Extremely well-done. The salt level could be dialed down a bit. The blueberry pancake was intensely flavored, actually a little too much so. There was a caramelized flavor to it that was good but went too far, coming off as almost acrid. But it was still way better than the average vegan pancake. For a place as creative as Sans, I was disappointed that they offer a blueberry pancake this time of year as opposed to making use of something seasonal like quince. The service was friendly and on point. My money was on 2020 for the year when a vegan joint would FINALLY materialize around here. Happy to see that the future is now. We'll definitely be back to explore the menu further. Hey Sans, get some Oatly for your lovely coffee!

Amazing food, excellent service, friendly staff. Extremely creative dishes cooked to prefect. Gorge the bartender was wonderful and well informed . Champ Jones former chef from Eleven Madison Park. These guys are professional and know what they are doing . A must try . Five stars ⭐️. We ordered the 5 course tasting menu it was delicious 😋!

Small plates were much more impressive than the larger ones. Beverages are great. Kitchen is incredibly slow. 30+ minutes between the time our apps were cleared and entrees arrived. Meal all in all was 2.5+ hours. Rough.

Caviar dish, burger, and pasta were insanely good. Haven’t had a vegan burger than my carnivore husband enjoyed so much ever before, and as a vegan I didn’t think it was possible to get such a light and creamy cheese sauce on that pasta! Blown away. Also I need that caviar dish as a regular part of my life please and thank you.

Just recently became Vegan. Been difficult finding great vegan food. I’m from LA and my experiences have just been ok. I’ve been looking for gourmet vegan and I definitely found that at Sans. I did the 5 course tasting with a friend and had the hibiscus mule. Everything was innovative and delicious! Wish you had a sister restaurant in LA!! Or better yet come to LA!!!

Lovely meal. A friend recommended this place and my wife and I went on a weeknight. Service was excellent. Everything from the bread and lemon-garlic butter to the sorbets at the end was inventive, flavorful and satisfying. The ‘caviar’ and sunchokes were the standout starters. The lasagne and onion were also excellent and memorable. I’m surprised by the negative reviews for this place. I’d be happy to return here and will recommend it as a destination to check out.

The dishes are inventive, delicate and a delight to savour. However, if you want to leave the restaurant feeling nourished you'll need to eat more than one "Large" dish. It's a a pity that the quality of the service didn't match that of the food.
