This place is a 💎 in Red Hook. It's part of a Restaurant/Bar. The section I went into is The General Store. They have breakfast and lunch items that you can eat here or takeout. They also have Rotisserie Chicken and grocery items. The place is very cute with a vibe of being in another era. The service is good and so are the prices. I had an Egg and Cheese Biscuit. It was tasty. I especially liked the Biscuit. The people working there were very nice. I have to go back and check out the Restaurant.

Great brunch, everything on the menu is clearly prepared with love for food. The staff was friendly, very attentive, and the outdoor seating is great when the weather is warm.
I loved the huevos rancheros with hand cut pork chili.

Came for brunch h on a Saturday with a friend. Got the Irish coffee which apparently has somewhat of a reputation. It was very good. Also got the huevos rancheros which was yummy, and then a gin fizz! My favorite. Super nice staff and time.

Drove from NJ for Sunday Brunch and it was well worth it. Their Irish coffee lives up to its reputation, it was excellent!! Great service in a small cozy ambiance. Great food and drinks all around.

Cool bar with great eats in Red Hook. We sampled a good portion of the menu and everything was really good. Highlights included the anchovy toast, deviled eggs, Caesar salad, chicken liver toast and skirt steak. The skirt steak was so good that we ordered a second order immediately after finishing the first. Pleasant, informed service. Fun place for casual drinks and bistro food.

A fantastic spot. Lovely decor and great art on the wall with a produce section at the back selling various niche items. Great coffee and good food. Recommend.

It's a silly thing but I loved that they served the huevos rancheros in a shallow bowl. It wasn't particularly sloppy but it was nice not to worry about egg yolks running over the edge of the plate. Their rendition was hearty and delicious.
Nice outdoor seating even if it was a chilly day.

it’s really good. the burger has changed from their oklahoma double smash burger but it’s still yummy. fries are great, cocktails are great. tin fish of the day is a must!

UPDATE:
We finally made it to Fort Defiance in their new location for brunch today and it was very good. I had the huevos rancheros which was excellent. I'm hoping they sell the pork chili that is in it on its own because it was delicious. BF had the American breakfast with a nice slab of potato roesti disguised as hash browns. He said it was very satisfying. We had a wander in the general store that is at the front of the restaurant. What a great little shop for delicious goodies and hostess presents. Got a beautiful looking bottle of olive oil and a tangerine shrub that's made by Andy Ricker of Pok Pok, a fancy looking tin of smoked trout pate and an apple thyme hand pie. 😋
MY PREVIOUS REVIEW:
As I sunk my teeth into the burger yesterday, I really wanted to cry cuz it was so freaking good. I was really tired and hungry when I went to the restaurant and I need it good comforting food and Fort Defiance delivered. I had a really delicious smoked trout salad which had lots of layers of flavor with beets and fennel. So good. My boyfriend had the lentil soup which had little pine nuts floating in it and a nice but not overpowering notes of coriander. He had the Farro Salad as well which was also delicious. This is got to be one of the best spots in the neighborhood. I must go there more often.

They say it's the best Irish Coffee anywhere - believe it! And the biscuits were divine. All was calm and mellow for brunch on Dec 23, our party of four waa seated right away. Loved the cozy vibe.

This restaurant used to have a burger that competed with their neighbor Red Hook Tavern - it was an “Oklahoma Smash” and it was great. They took a good thing and made it worse, the new burger is just ok & definitely doesn’t make us choose dinner here over elsewhere. We were regulars, now not so much.
That said their new breakfast and lunch daily menu is great. Excellent fried chicken sandwich and great BLT
But please hear this and bring back those great burgers, the new one is just nothing to write home about, the old one fulfilled a craving and made us look forward to burgers at Fort Defiance

We love Fort Defiance! Wonderful dinner entrees, drinks, salads, ambiance… and I love the “general store” during the day too, to pick up items or to get a tasty lunch / breakfast!

We stopped in this cute market while exploring red hook. Love everything about it, I can't wait to visit again. Grabbed some fun items to make dinner with.

Went to IKEA in Brooklyn with two of the women my mother gave birth to via the free ferry. Walked around Red Hook and found a delicious, funky, friendly place to eat

Good food, limited veggie options.
Loved their elote and fried chickpeas! Steak frites was also done well.

Great place. Able to score a premium table at 6:45 with no reservation. Got crowded very quickly. Very good food and friendly service. Thursdays are Tiki night. Bar was full and many people were drinking rum drinks in fun glassware. I am more of a beer person so was into the small but well-curated beer list including great local brewery options (Strong Rope and Other Half were highlights). Really enjoyed the skate entree - super good. Service was friendly and fast. Space is tiny with neighborhood vibe. It's one of those great places in NYC that gives you a flavor of the culture of the local neighborhood. Excellent choice for single or couple if you are in Red Hook. Groups and families would need reservations due to small space (in fact, families and large groups should inquire with the manager). Enjoy!

A fun brunch spot with a crisp menu, lovely decor, friendly vibes, and tasty dishes. Seems like it’s a spot for drinks too. Had a delicious huevos rancheros with pork chili, and a nice strong cup of coffee. Egg dishes solid all around. Nice naturally bright interior.

A wonderful place to go for a good cup of coffee with a friend or partner. I had the best cookie in my life today. Chocolate, with salt sprinkled on top. Young people and family spend time here and it offers appropriate outside dinning. Yum.

Amazing general store with lots of cool stuff. I can’t wait to visit once they are back up and running as a restaurant. There’s an authenticity to this place that makes you feel right at home. I had molasses loaf and cold brew that literally brought joy that I didn’t realize was missing from my day. (PS- I plan on coming back for some libations to go.)

Take the ferry there and enjoy an awesome beyond awesome brunch....I felt like a judge on Chopped, raving over the brilliant combination of perfect cooking, fresh ingredients, mix of textures, proper use of spices...
And the people who work there were so kind, so efficient.
Quite seriously the best meal I have had out in ages in this small, lovely place.

Absolute best food ever! I had the ham and egg sandwich with the jalapeño jam and everything was so fresh. My boyfriend had the huevos rancheros and I couldn't stop eating his food too! Best birthday breakfast ever. The waitress was amazing, the decor 100% awesome, and the bartender was so sweet and even gave us a a little shot before we left for my birthday! Next time we are in Brooklyn we will be back again to try lunch!

It’s a really a shame: we were 3 of us, foreigners, we called we were asked to come we came we we’re asked to be callled back in 20 minutes we came back and came back until kitchen was closed. The waiter humiliated us : are you from the industry he asked when we wondered why we were given si few consideration. Red Hook. But the shamest.

The best place on earth. This is my heart home. My safe place. When I have anxiety dreams, my subconscious takes me here to calm me down.

Awesome food and environment!!! Love this place! Try the Huevos Rancheros
Chris Kilvington
Great food. service, music and vibe. Here's one veggie who accidentally chose a dish with a little meat in... and it seemed a crime not to finish the lot. Best food place we've found in NYC so far. (That's not because I ate meat!)
Heather Ludzack
We come all the way from Wisconsin to eat at Ft. Defiance! The coolest place, the coolest people, the coolest neighborhood and AWESOME Food!
Abigail Torres
Love their version of white zombie drink very potent
Arrington de Dionyso
The BEST pour over coffee in all of New York. Lots of those "third wave" coffee place seem to think you want your coffee to taste like a bouquet of flowers or a bowl of fruit. Fort Defiance makes COFFEE and daaaaaaamn it is deep and rich like a diamond mine.

Personale cortese barista fantastica cibo ottimo ambiente molto bello. Vale l'attesa

We had a very nice brunch, somewhat pricey. The Muffaletta was OK and my wife's Huevos Rancheros was excellent. It came in a skillet which I thought was a great way to cook and serve. I believe I will steal that idea. Our server, Megan was pleasant and attentive. We found this old time Brooklyn water front bar by accident but we will keep it in mind for our next Red Hook walk.
