What a great cafe! We came here to check out the wedding space for a client and we are so excited! So many great places for photos...and little traffic noice since it is not on a main thoroughfare. That was a wonderful thing to enjoy some lunch and wine and NOT hear tons of traffic. :-)
Lunch was delicious and plenty of wine to compliment whatever dish you choose. Food is not cheap, but it is superbly prepared and oh so delicious (we had the goat cheese balls and blue crab cake)! Was worth a little splurge.
There are a couple of “house dogs” to keep you company while you sip your wine. Some chickens wandered by, a lizard and another bird, we think was some kind of pheasant (pictured with the chicken). Really a lovely place, perfect for a quiet getaway meal!
Touring the Hill Country and came upon this little gem. We were impressed with the beautiful atmosphere, the fresh menu and great wine list. However, we were surprised when asked if we had reservations. I suppose in such a small town they need to practice crowd control. They squeezed us in and asked for our patience. The temperanillo was great and the burger, which we shared, was cooked perfectly. The Sauerkraut Balls were unique and tasty. When I go to the coast I set my patience on "Island Time" and will do the same when I return here.
The food was very tasty, the staff friendly and the garden and the decoration beautiful. I'll definitely come back.
I'd give them 10 stars. Out in the middle of nowhere. My wife and I discovered it when we were staying in Comfort one trip to the Hill Country. We'll now go out of our way to make a stop there to eat. The food was out of this world. Beautiful setting, especially in the evening during sunset. They also host weddings and other events on the grounds.
Amazing Hill Country location. Fantastic food in a rustic setting. You can dine al fresco, or inside. Very fresh, locally sourced choices prepared by a talented chef. Impressive wine list. Perfect for special occasions. Upscale food, with a casual feel.
The catfish was excellent. Came from Mississippi. Coleslaw was excellent as well. I'm learning to ask for curbside fried food with container top left open, otherwise it looses it's crispiness. That was done for the catfish and fries. EXCELLENT. CRISPY. Execllent fish batter. Loved the tarter sauce as well. We keep silverware in our vehicle. Just prefer eating with metal utensils plus less waste (don't need anymore plastic buried in our land). Pulled over at a nearby shaded river spot. It was a lovely Friday evening.
So delicious. any time we in the area we go there. Yes, service is slow as mentioned in other reviews, but they are cooking everything from scratch and even come out to pluck fresh herbs from their herb garden to prepare your meal. I love the veggie enchiladas and the beef tenderloin. So awesome! And what a cool place to enjoy a great Hill Country day!
Highly recommend for not only casual dinning but for events! We recently had a wedding there and it turned out beautifully! The Welfare Cafe team exceeded our expectations with superior service and they went above and beyond to ensure a smooth event rain or shine. I couldn't have asked for a better venue and catering service!
