Review India's Restaurant - Baton Rouge

Kevin Callahan Jr
First time ever experiencing Indian food. Pleasantly surprised. I got tired of always hearing about curry so decided to give it a go. Pretty sure I hand the lamb vindaloo, the seekh kebab and the maharaja beer (Indian lager) Definitely want to try more of the things on the menu. Has a more upscalish feel to the restaurant like the bonefish so perfect scenario for a date night.

First time experiencing Indian food, and I have to say it was amazing! Especially the lamb! The naan was delicious! The chai tea and even the lemonade was homemade and so good! I also have to mention the family that owns the restaurant was so sweet and accommodating. We will stop again if we’re ever in the area.

The food and service was amazing. The staff was friendly and made us feel more than welcome. The food was delicious and fresh. We got the meal for two and had more than enough food to feel full and the restaurant and take some home. Could not recommend this place more!

Such delicious food! Service is the best around! Prices are also excellent, & portions great!

Good food, spiced right for me. I would visit again when I travel to Baton Rouge again. Ordered chicken Tikka marsala and garlic naan (generally a safe choice) Came with white rice. While the server suggested mild, I asked for medium spice. Excellent choice for me- spicy enough to make your nose want to run, not hot enough to make you sweat! Sauce was very smooth, chicken nice chunks. Good rice. Not over or under cooked. Menu states naan is made to order. So I requested that the garlic and cilantro naan be made only with garlic. They did that - excellent. Not much ambiance to the place. Tables in large room with two areas defined, one with the bar. Made me think that maybe it could easily be setup to handle a large party. The focus was the food, not the ambiance Price including generous tip was $30

I somehow like the ambiance of this place although not many mention that in the comments. It's spacious and bright. The walls have many paintings of Mughal era India. The decor is simple and not overdone as at many Indian places. The buffet was not available during Covid times. The Poori was crisp, the naan freshly baked, and the Gulab Jamun perfect. The staff was friendly and accommodated us around their lunch break.

This place is delicious and definitely worth the visit if you've never tried Indian cuisine. The manager/owner was nice and they were quick with having the food ready for pickup. I got the lamb vindaloo (it's a type of curry) and the meat was very tender. I also got a warm chai that they wrapped, so that it won't spill as I drive. I will come back again.

Great menu, lots of variety. Wish the chaat had more sauce to it, a little dry. Kati roll was great! Good service!

Hey, did you folks know about the Baton Rouge Business Report that showed this?

NUMBER OF CRITICAL VIOLATIONS: 18

INDIA’S RESTAURANT • 5230 ESSEN LANE

Notable violations:

• “Food has been prepared, packaged, or held under unsanitary conditions where it may have been rendered injurious to health. Rodent droppings were in boxes holding open food containers.” The contaminated food was discarded.

• Bugs and rodent droppings were found in the dry storage area.

• Cold- and hot-holding food requirements were not met. Several cold food items were not held at 41 degrees or below as required, including mango curry found to be 61 degrees, rice keehur at 56 degrees and chicken at 57 degrees. All were discarded. Also, “potentially hazardous” food held for more than 24 hours was found not to be date marked on multiple inspections.

From www businessreport com

-----------------------------------------

This is the worst Indian restaurant we have been to in over three decades. The high scores they get are really puzzling. If you think this is good Indian food, we have nothing but pity for you. This is not only mediocre food, but the owners of the restaurant clearly don't care about their customers having a quality experience.

The mango lassis are substandard. They taste like thick sugar water and lack the creaminess of a fine, homemade yogurt. The mango they use is also flavorless. The Shrimp Vindaloo was horrible. It was a bright, neon red and the shrimp tasted very fishy and not fresh. We asked to have it removed from the bill but they refused! This is yet another sign of their lack of concern for their customers.

The samosas were miserable - thick, greasy and gummy.

I would NEVER eat here again.

The only thing this place has going for it is the kind waiter - who actually tried to get the stingy owners to remove the item we could not eat from the menu on our behalf, but they refused.

Try a different Indian restaurant. Trust us - you can do better than this one.
---------------------------This is the worst Indian restaurant we have been to in over three decades. The high scores they get are really puzzling. Love this place. I love everything at the buffet. All great flavors and at the end of the dish I like to take the naan bread and scoup up all the remaining sauces.

Ok first off I'm really fond of this place. Not too many Indian restaurants outside of New Orleans that are worth anything, but this one delivers exactly what you'd expect. Great place to get your Indian fix, with good fast service and if you go during buffet hours the buffet is sizable. The only drawback--the price. I just paid for a tab for two buffets with ice water to drink and it was $37 before tip. Way too much. Lack of competition in the $10-14 range in Baton Rouge means that they can charge what they want.

BEST INDIAN FOOD IN BATON ROUGE! So very good. I've never gotten anything I didn't like from here. They also have an amazing lunch buffet. The waiters and waitresses are always attentive and quick to refill your water. Highly recommend this place if you like Indian food!

The food was absolutely amazing. Great Indian food. If you want to step out of your comfort zone and delve into another culture's delicious creations go to
Indian's.

Why it took me so many years to finally try "Indian food" and this particular restaurant, which I passed so many times, is beyond me. It has a loyal collection of customers who will visit as often as possible. After dining here a few times myself, I can see why.

The restaurant's bland exterior belies it's wonderful furnishings. Each table appears fit for an upscale venue rather than an establishment known predominantly for its buffet. The food is excellent, the value of the food given portions and price is outstanding, and the service is impeccable.

While the lunch buffet is not a bad deal, it only showcases a small portion of their extensive menu. There are still plenty of dishes to try which are only available at dinner. Please don't be wary of trying any lamb or mutton-based dish as the meat is quite tender and succulent.

I wish I could single out a few specific dishes but in truth everything is worth a try. The chicken vindaloo has just the right kick, the chicken tikka masala's rich, creamy flavor is popular among fans of more milder dishes, and the curry is pretty good as well.

Don't be fearful about the prospect of eating ethnic food. Honestly, this is as much British cuisine as it is Indian. There are spicy, rich, savory, bitter, and sweet options that can appeal to any palate. A visit during the lunch buffet is truly a tour of flavors. Just take it easy on the nan and wonderful desserts such as the interesting orange-tinted bread pudding. Otherwise, you are liable to be encumbered by the resultantly bloated, yet satiated and satisfied, stomach you will possess.

Taste: 8.5/10

Cost: 9/10

Dining Area/Decor: 9/10

Customer Service: 9/10

Location: 7/10

Great food and people. I love this place and highly recommend it. The lunch buffet is unlike any other, and it's available 7 days a week. I have not tried anything here I didn't like. Amazing food and friendly staff.

Great food but they have horrible phone service!. I absolutely love the lamb korma it's my favorite dish! But, I've tried calling in a to go order several different times. Every time I call their line will be busy. The last time I called 35 times over the course of 30 minutes and each time it was busy

Great value and delicious food !. We were on vacation (from Alabama) visiting the historic plantations around Baton Rouge in early October. One evening, while driving on the Essen lane, we suddenly came across the India's Restaurant. So we decided to have dinner there. The Restaurant was not pretentious, but the food was very good indeed, and reasonably priced. A couple of days later, we dropped by again during the lunch hour to try their Buffet. Having tried many Indian Restaurants over a 30 year period in Alabama, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Georgia and other places, I felt that their Lunch Buffet was probably the best I have had in a long while. Baton Rouge is lucky to have this restaurant that serves delicious Indian curries at very reasonable prices.

This place is really good for the money!. As others have already posted - Bay Leaf's (another local Indian restaurant) is more refined than India's and offers better quality food but you certainly do pay for it. India's gives you really good food for a really great price. Their service at times can seem somewhat 'scattered' but in all of the times that I have visited India's never once have I had a bad experience with the wait staff or management. One of the really wonderful things about India's is that they always have a wide variety of lunch buffet items and the buffet options change from day to day giving you a chance to taste a lot of different flavors and combinations. If you would like to have something that is healthy, very tasty, filling, and at a good price then you need to look no further than India's.

Stored food....freezed food....reheated....not good....but tastes good. It doesn't count as authentic as they poses...I went three times and I surprisingly found the same people along with me...seems like they addicted sheeps
Also there will be a woman who pose as manager and irritatingly shout on waiters and servants who are actually some nice talking people...and I personally like to give a good tip to them... But whatever you give itseems like it doesn't get to them and it likely goes to management...so no satisfaction of giving some high tip...finally, this restaurant runs on few unhealthy good tasting dishes.

Their naan was delicious, everything I had hoped it to be. I was a little apprehensive about trying a new Indian restaurant, as I've had bad experiences in the past. but this place was great. they have a good vegetarian menu, I was a little overwhelmed by the options and had a hard time choosing. I went with the paneer makhani and it was delicious. plus there was a lot of food and they even give you naan with it, which was awesome. for the price of the meal, I was very pleased with this place

We used to go there often. The food has gone downhill over the last few years, so we've started going to another Indian restaurant.

Not the best Indian food I've ever had but given the limited options in the area it's worth a stop from time to time.
Heather
Food is amazing but the service is horrible. They are rude and ugly like you are offending their dishes eating it as an American.
Lovegoodfood
The buffet is fabulous. I love this place. The buffet is always so interesting, with great choices.

Recommended. The food there was delicious!!!! Everything was cooked well, taste great, and I can't find a single complaint about the food....I ordered the lamb curry.
However you will have to watch them with the mathematics..it was towards the end of the night so we didn't have time to think or fuss about it, but four people order meals all under 14 bucks and somehow our bill was around 80 before tip (they never showed us the bill just the split)

Horrible service!!! Called a to go order was told 20 minutes I got there in 30 and then was told it would be a few more minutes. Apparently a "few" was 22minutes. I had to seek out the guy walking around to even get an explanation, an he acted annoyed, during this ridiculous wait I wasn't even offered any water, upon getting the food I expected some sort of discount in some form or fashion, NOPE. Oh and the food, Decent at best and way overpriced, this is my first and last visit, hopefully this place goes out of business.

Don't order a cocktail :-). So they have NO IDEA what a Vodka Tonic is though they have the stuff for it, but otherwise the FOOD ROCKS! I enjoy my time there so much more than at Bay Leaf. Great Korma sauce, great Vindaloo, Great Rogan Josh..... just GREAT.

GREAT FOOD!. Waiting to go to BR just to get another taste of this food!

Awesome food, both north and south indian cuisine. Will love to go back.

Hit or miss. Sometimes great but can't bring myself to go back due to inconsistencies. The food tends toward lukewarm and can be so bland.

Tasty food. I used to frequent india's but I took a break from eating out. I ate there once again this year and ordered a rice refill which they charged me $5 for. They've never charged me for a rice refill before and when I talked to to manager about it he pretty much told me that they can charge whatever they want. I cannot bring myself to eat here again after that.

I absolutely love this place! The lamb korma is to die for. Add in a mango lassi, and you are good to go.

Best value for money Indian. If you want fancy go to Bay Leaf, if you want a reasonable price with great service go to India's.
Naturally being an aficionado of Indian food due to my English heritage, I was surprised by the quality of Indian food available in Baton Rouge and India's in particular despite there only being 2 options (3 if you include Himalayas).
Portion sizes are very good, and unlike at Bay Leaf the cost of the rice and naan (which comes in a larger size) are included in the price of the curry.
The actual curries themselves were delicious, I'm usually wary of eating lamb in Baton Rouge due to never having seen a sheep in Lousiana in my 4 years here, however the lamb was very tender and delicious. We tried multiple dishes that were shared between my eating companions and I and the highlights included the Lamb Pasanda and a very delicious Chicken Korma.
For dessert we went with the Indian standard, the gulab jamun, which whilst being inferior to the quality of Bay Leaf's, was about half the price so definitely worth a try.
The wait staff were very attentive to our needs as we had a 1 month old with us and even took him off our hands and played with him, one of the waitresses didn't even mind him spitting up on her a bit so that's a plus.
My only complaint is that when we were there they had a malfunctioning AC unit that was constantly whirring on, then whirring off extremely loudly. I'm sure this has been fixed by now and otherwise didn't change our evening.

Wow! Really amazing experience! Lamb vidaloo was to die for! Garlic naan so good! Veggie samosa was awesome! I'm sweating! Thanks to the friendly staff too!!

Delicious. Always delicious. Great mango ice cream. They really vary their food so it's always different.

Best Indian lunch buffet in BR. But I'm always disappointed by their dinner offerings.
Ben
Great lunch buffet at a good price for Indian food. Overall, best value in town for Indian and the service is always helpfully. They're always astute at refilling your ice water so you can put the flames out.

Having just returned from my second month long trip to India, I can say that the underlying flavors are there but the quality of the ingredients is much higher here. Excellant improvent on a wonderful cuisine.
Marta
Indias restaurant is hands downthe best Indian restaurant in baton rouge. they have a awesome lunch buffet and the service is wonderful. I would highly reccomend it to anyone
Food Lovin' Lady
Nah, I'll pass. The food may be good but just not a fan of curry, well Indian curry as experienced here.
Chris
Good abmiance and reasonable price. India's would be worth coming back to even if Baton Rouge had more than a few Indian restaurants. The naan is unremarkable, but the entrees have always been excellent. The service is attentive, in the detached, respectful sort of way that is common in Indian restaurants.
Jason G
Very good food, attentive service, reasonably priced! I'll be back!
Kisha Hayes
The Chicken Tikki Masala is by far the best I every had.
Joe
Superb and fresh lunch buffet!
Hollll
It's always fresh. I love it!

Authentic Indian Style Cuisine I hadn't had Indian food in over 10 years until I went to India's today. They've been situated on Essen lane for as long as I can remember so I figured they've got to be the best bet since you don't stay in business long wit
