It’s a little confusing because Heo Eatery has combined with Bun Belly, but both of their storefront photos on Google aren’t updated. This is located in a plaza, and the main restaurant sign reads Bun Belly. I read complaints about the service, but when I visited there was one waitress for the whole restaurant, and she was stellar. Very polite and prompt despite being busy. I tried the jasmine tea and the turmeric fish rice plate- both were fantastic. Definitely worth a stop!
Danngggggg this place was so cute. The person at the register was super friendly and patient, quickly explaining everything clearly and concisely for us, with a dash of humor. I appreciate the simple, easy-to-understand menu and the vegetarian options. The decor was cute and minimal, with a really nice informal, relaxed vibe.
We got the tofu and turmeric fish rice dishes. The food came out super fast! The highlight for me was the roasted veggies, consisting of nicely browned carrots, squash, broccoli, and beets. I’m still drooling over the roasted broccoli! It was crunchy and savory, and not at all over-cooked or mushy (the way many other restaurants do it).
I also really enjoyed the brown rice, which was cooked to perfection - so fluffy and flavorful, with just the right amount of salt. The other side dish was a gently pickled crunchy salad of cucumbers, cabbage, carrots, and jalapeño. This salad was decent, a tad spicy, and it could maybe use a bit more fermentation or interesting spices to give it a more memorable flavor and kick.
The only downside was the fried tofu, which was chewy and kind of tough (not crunchy), drenched in a sauce/marinade that tasted a bit generic. It was almost like they fried the tofu, then simply dipped it in soy sauce. It was edible and basically enjoyable, but I think they could concoct a more interesting and zesty sauce for their tofu, and figure out a way to make the tofu retain some crunchiness.
But overall, I really enjoyed all the flavors and the price ($10 per dish) was about right, considering their very generous portions. We left feeling super full for hours, but without that heavy/gross feeling. We’ll definitely be returning here!
Two delicious pork buns and a duck bahn mi for lunch for $20. The place is small but designed well and very inviting. I'm bringing my family back here for sure!
Excellent food, excellent service, excellent decor! Delicious! I can't believe we just found it. 🤌
I randomly stopped in for lunch and wow, am I glad I did! I really enjoyed it.
Atmosphere: It's a small Vietnamese-inspired place right on Lamar with a few parking spots out front. The inside is modern, pleasant, and clean.
Service: Order at the counter and they bring it to your table. The fellow at the counter was helpful and attentive.
Food: Outstanding. The pork rib "rice bowl" was exceptional, delicious and beautiful even when served on paper. See my photo.
Price: A great deal for this food quality.
Verdict: Heo is a winner. Don't miss it!
Enjoyable pho, good service, great interior design. Pho portion was a little small. Taste was good. Broth was very light. Thai iced tea was good too.
Pho was a bit pricey (~$15 if I recall correctly)
Confusing: this restaurant is the same as bun belly?
A clean, modern restaurant serving up interpretations of Vietnamese dishes I grew up with! The Tumeric Fish and Lemongrass Beef are flavorful and deceivingly filling despite seeming like a smaller portion than you'd get at any other Vietnamese phở restaurant. Kids will love the simple phở and tater tots! It's a counter service place, and I've gotten friendly service every time I've come here.
The rice boxes are really good. Pho is on point considering this as a fusion place. The pork belly in the baos are very fatty. I mean 50% of the meat piece is fat.
Service is meh. The lady at the register seemed not happy to have customers LOL.
Fantastic place! It is my new go to Vietnamese place that is close to home! The Pho is wonderful and doesn't taste loaded with MSG. Always fresh and they are consistent with their quality.
My personal FAVORITE right now is absolutely the Lemongrass Beef Vermicelli Bowl. I know authentic Vietnamese and this dish harnesses all the freshness, spice and pizzaz of the traditional dish I grew up on.
The prices are reasonable, but be aware you do have to order online and there is a small fee to place your order through that platform. No biggie, it's worth it!!
I'll be a return customer!
A concise menu made well takes the effort out of eating, and Heo offers just that. Everything we ordered was fresh and well portioned, so we didn't feel overloaded leaving (rare with all the good food in Austin.)
Bonus points for USB chargers in the booths.
