Review Wu Chow - Austin

Prachi Ambegaonkar
This place is absolutely outstanding! It offers exceptional value for your money. On my second visit to Wu Chow, I was once again impressed by the consistently high food quality. We indulged in the chicken dumplings, which were impeccably fresh and incredibly delicious. The crispy chicken with Szechuan pepper provided the perfect balance of zing without being overly spicy. However, the real stars of the meal were the cumin lamb and the chili chicken – simply the best! I highly recommend these two dishes, especially when paired with their fragrant fried rice. The portions are generously sized and easily satisfy two hungry diners. Overall, this establishment is a gem. They also have a wide variety of cocktails and beer/wines! The ambiance is delightful, and their prices are very reasonable. If you're visiting Austin, I wholeheartedly endorse this place. It's a culinary delight!

Wu chow is our favorite place for dinner in Austin. We first tried 4 years ago, and totally fall in love with it. I like their atmosphere as well. Such a nice romance place that with delicious food. Some dishes that highly recommended. - Beef chow fun, everyone loves it, right?! It is the best main dish we ever tried in different Chinese Cuisine. The favor is just right, not too much or too light. - Chengdu Chili Chicken, spicy warning, but it's so good! Tender chicken breast with some spicy carrots, cabbages and beans. We were glad that this chili chicken dish has some veggies in it, so we are able to order one more meat dish! - Honey Pecan Gulf Prawn, huge prawn! Love this dish at the first try! Love this place. BUT too hard to order, because we would like to try all dishes! 100% recommended.

Good food, I would categorize it as Americanized Chinese food in a good way. Not what I typically look for but the flavors were very good and beef and chicken was very tender. It was a good change between going beef brisket hopping in Austin. I can recommend it. Dim sum only in the evening btw.

So, here's the scoop on Woo Child – the dim sum and Sichuan wizardry down in downtown Austin. Now, I held off on this review because, let's face it, Austin can sometimes prioritize looking cool over serving up killer food. But hold onto your chopsticks, because Woo Child is about to flip that script. This place doesn't just serve dim sum; it throws a dim sum party in your mouth, and Sichuan cuisine here is like a flavor rollercoaster you never want to end. In a town where aesthetics often steal the show, Woo Child goes, "Hold my hot sauce," and cranks up the taste to 11. After several trips, I can confidently say Woo Child isn't just a restaurant; it's a pleasure cruise for your taste buds. It's like they took the food game, did a little dance, and set a whole new standard. So, if you're tired of the same old foodie song and dance, Woo Child is the downtown maestro conducting a symphony of flavors that'll make your taste buds sing.

i had a great time at Wu Chow. I would absolutely recommend Wu Chow to any vegans or vegetarians. The server was able to ensure everything was vegan before it came out and there were a number of options. The service was great, the happy hour wine was good, and the food was delicious. The Sichuan Braised Eggplant was amazing. Our server was attentive and the food came out quick. The server was able to make great recommendations for vegan options. If you’re a vegan i would 1000% recommend and just ask your server which meat options can be replaced with tofu.

I stumbled on this WU Chow while looking for a gluten-free Chinese food options. The menu online had a nice variety so I decided to go for it. Something to note when driving, there are several trees making it difficult to see the small red sign so be aware while navigating. If you're on the sidewalk, you can't miss it. There is valet but it's not close to the entrance; you're better off going to the small lot at San Antonio St. and 5th. It's well lit and had plenty of spaces on a Thursday evening around 7 pm. The ambiance was really nice! There's basically a wall of windows letting so much natural light in and overlooking the outdoor dining area. However, it's not too bright inside and still has a low-light feel. Staff was really friendly and we were seated quickly. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and made some great recommendations. She was attentive, asked about allergies beforehand, and answered my questions. My water glass was never empty and cocktails were refreshing. I love that everything comes out on "share" plates. This is great for those dining with a group of people and want to try various items... especially if you can't decide what you want. All of the share dishes come out with serving utensils so that no one is using their personal items. That being said, the food was phenomenal. I had been craving good Chinese food because it's a rare find when you can't have gluten. This place really hit the spot and I will definitely be returning.

Came in for my sisters graduation lunch and had a wonderful experience. Walked in and was seated outside in the patio area where our table was ready for us. Beautiful patio, excellent customer service provided by Taylor, clean, and good quality food. Taylor was extra busy but very helpful and patient with our ordering process. Definitely would recommend and be back again soon. 🔥

Great Chinese restaurant. We ordered Hot and Sour Soup, Ma Po Tofu and Spicy Cabbage. Taste are great and portion is right for two. Did not have enough space to try other food and will definitely come back next time to try more food. Service is also excellent.

We had an amazing experience with Brandon as our server. He was so thoughtful we were having a weekend getaway to celebrate my birthday and my daughter's graduation and he made it so extra special. We ate on the patio. Perfect weather and great experience. Food is prepared with care. Very flavorful.

I would have given this place 4.5 literally but I had to make a choice and I have to give 4 when I consider some small imperfections. First, the prices are quite affordable when considering the portions and location. The waitresses are kind and helpful. Crispy Sesame Beef was among the best I've ever tried. Fried rice were average, Beef Chow Fun were above the average. However, dumplings were unfortunately below my expectations. They were not hot and the dough did not have the proper texture. This is a nice place to have your dinner overall. I recommend it.

The eggplant dish was popular and really awesome. We went there nearly Sunday noon and were very enjoyable. The noodle with sliced cucumber was seasoned great as well, also the egg tart dessert ended up our brunch with fulfillment.

We really enjoyed our visit. The restaurant was very accommodating we had a last minute change to the number of guests, and they were able to accommodate us. The menu is very extensive so the waitress was able to give us a few good recommendations. Here is a list of items we ordered and all had a very unique taste 1. Dry Fried Local Green Beans 2. Salt and Pepper Squid 3. Seafood Bird's Nest 4. Shanghai Soup Dumplings 5 Chengdu Chilli Chicken 6. Singapore Noodles. 8. Prawns (maybe chengdu or honey pecan gulf prawns. 8. Thyme me up - virgin. 9. Vegan ice cream. The restaurant itself has indoor and outdoor seating. The parking lot is a self park across the street from the restaurant.

Came in on Christmas and had a wonderful time! If I'm honest, me and my family can be a bit demanding as a whole, but Taylor took extremely good care of us. Food was 10/10 especially family style, where you can get a bit of everything. Service was 11/10!

Get a reservation before coming. Overall, nice restaurant with tasty Asian fusion dimsum. Would recommend as a safe dimsum choice. Some comments on the food: 1. Egg cream bun didn't have enough filling to bun ratio. 2. Shrimp stuffed eggplant was a little oily. 3. Pork potstickers wrappings was a little thick.

We went here for Sunday lunch. It was a dim sum menu. Nice place and they offered outdoor seating also. Nice selection of mocktails for those that don't consume alcohol. The bloody Mulan (bloody Mary- their version) was quite good. The dim sum was all quite tasty. A bit on the pricier side. I felt for the price, service could have been a little more attentive- they forgot to bring a few items we ordered and we had to remind them, and it took a while for refills on water. Otherwise, it was a good experience.

This place deserves a 5 star review, everything was done right. I truly enjoyed the happy hour appetizers and drinks. We ordered the pecan shrimp as well and it was really good, pecans tasted like candy just a nice crunch with the shrimp. Chicken fried rice was really good as well. The only reason for the 4 star review, was due to the dumplings not being a bit hotter. The temperature makes them easier to eat but I would want them hotter, besides that everything was great

This has been one of my favorite spots since we went to the soft opening a couple years ago. The staff is always amazing. You are typically greeted by one of the owners C.K. He is great. The staff is always amazing. We have had Tanner as our server several times and he is fantastic. The food is so good that we always order so much more than we can eat, because we never mind having leftovers. Must haves for first timers: - soup dumplings - tangerine peel beef - gong bai chicken - wok tossed okra - dry fried green beans It’s high end Chinese with nice ambiance and a laid back feel. The house music is hip hop and it’s amazing. Pro tip: if you aren’t drinking alcohol they have grape soda on the fountain, which is surprisingly awesome with the food.

We LOVE Wu Chow! Only giving them a 4 because they keep changing menu items that were gluten free to where they are no longer. They seem to be adding unessary ingredients that contain gluten when the dishes were already delicious and available for all. For example, the turnip cakes on the brunch menu are no longer gluten free, as well as the tangerine beef on the dinner menu. They were my favorite items and I was disappointed to find out I could no longer have them.

Never been to Austin before and my husband found this gem. Dim Sum yummy! You have to try the soup dumplings. Try one first without the dipping sauce. You get the whole deliciousness. The special fish on the menu was a Mediterranean Bass. The whole fish. He loved it. So easy to remove the bones. The staff made two cuts and then opened one side to lay the fish flat on the plate. Covered in cilantro. I ordered and shared the twice baked pork. Great taste with just a push of spice. We also shared an order of vegetable stir fried rice. I wanted the whole bowl my self. Definitely a place for work drinks/dinner, date nights and family friendly. The dishes are prepared family style and we had plenty to take home with us.

I have been waiting for this place to open for the longest time. Austin has a culinary hole that Wu Chow was summoned to fill! Located on West 5th in the IBC bank building, opposite of Fixe, there are plenty of meter parking around. They are only open for dinner right now and dim sum is only served on Sunday from 11am to 3pm (Bonus: most parking meters around are free on Sunday!). Reservation is a must and the decor is upscale and fun, whole wall of mahjong pieces? How cool! The first two times I heard 90s hip hop and pop songs which I totally did not expect some Bong Thugs N Harmony to come on in the midst of me eating MaPo Tofu! AWESOME! The 3rd time for dim sum they played holiday music instead. Before I go into the food, I must give kudos to the staff. The front desk is friendly, the servers have been attentive and our drinks are always filled. CK the owner stopped by to say hi and see how things were going during our dinner service visit. Turns out he is also from Taiwan so bonus points for him! Now the food: The star of Wu Chow: 小籠包 Shanghai Soup Dumplings is 5 pieces for $10. They limit 2 orders per table but I can see why. The broth in the dumplings is flavorful and combined with a bit of the vinegar soy, delicious! I can easily eat a meal of just soup dumplings and be happy. There is no other place in Austin that serves this, and chefs train for years to make soup dumplings. Yes you will get a few thats broken, but that is expected. 春卷 Chicken & Taro Eggrolls is an order of 3 for $6. They are long thing crisy rolls that is accompanied with a sour plum sauce.I have ordered this everytime I have been here. 麻婆豆腐 Mapo Tofu $14 was one of my go to dishes at most Chinese restaurants. Its not as spicy as what most people can be use to but I prefer it this way. There is lots of tender tofu pieces and is such a appetizing dish to go with rice. my significant other did mention he wish there were more diced pork in the dish but me personally i rather have more tofu than pork, so each to their own. 辣包心菜 Chendu Spicy Cabbage $9 This was a dish that completely surprised me. It was so flavorful that I easily ate most of this plate myself. The cabbage was cooked perfect with a bit of crunch and the level of spice was perfect for me. For the dim sum: the tenderbelly pork shumai is a must, topped with roe the shumai is easily the best of all the dim sum places around town. Their char shao bao (bbq pork buns) has two options: baked or steamed. We tried both and the table was split on which they like. The baked baos has a sweet glaze on top and the steam bao dough is perfectly fluffy. Another star of dimsum is the scallion pancake. I have had many scallion pancakes in my lifetime and I even make them myself, but this is hands down the best ever. Their pancakes are pan fried instead of the standard deep fried so the outside is crispy and the inside is flavorful and has many layers. Oh and how I can forget its chrysanthemum mimosa! $1 for a champagne flute and $2 for a wine glass, its delicious and the subtle chrysanthemum flavor is just what I need for a sunday morning. One of the reasons why I love bringing new people to Wu Chow is that they will take advice and criticism well. They are all about quality. I noticed that the bbq pork buns use to be an order of 2 and now it is an order of 3. Thank you Wu Chow for listening and continuing to provide Austin with your delicious soup dumplings!!

Dinner was delicious: soup dumplings, okra, Sichuan chicken, scallion beef, salt and pepper squid, and crispy noodles with chicken and beef. The only problem was that when I inspected our leftovers, I discovered that our server had not included our noodles. Disappointing because there was quite a large portion of that dish left, which I would have loved to eat for lunch tomorrow. Edited to add: Upon further inspection today, we did indeed receive all the food, but the noodles were in the same container as the beef, but underneath. So changed to five stars!!

I had a wonderful time at Wu Chow, the staff is always amazing! The Bartender Sam is phenomenal, he always gives us great service and samples of their new drink specials. The food is extraordinary, especial the shanghai dumplings that makes your mouth watery. The ambiance is trendy and exceptional. It would the cherry on the cake if the owner would occasionally walk away from hostess stand and check on the tables.

I must say my first dining experience at Wu Chow was phenomenal. I had the scallops hugging beef with oolong spinach and it was delicious. Our waiter Tanner was extremely knowledgeable and explained the concept of family style to this noob. A magnificent dinner that left me fulfilled and not sluggish. I look forward to dining here again and won't hesitate on recommending Wu Chow to my friends and family. -Cheers

This place is worth exactly one visit. Service was the best thing about it. Atmosphere was the second best (we sat outside). And the food came last. The four of us ordered the soup dumplings (the uncooked flower dough taste was overwhelming), friend rice, twice cooked pork belly, Gong Bao chicken, and two other dishes, which were all too oily and very much like they were cooked in the same sauce. The small plates were all that were provided and dishes were served without a serving spoon. The dishes were not timed and came out minutes apart. Anyway, all you need to know is I looked for and didn't see any Chinese people there!

I’m totally sold on this spot. Great music, great location, amazing atmosphere and of course great food. The family style approach is genius.

Incredible! We had such a wonderful time. My Mah Jong group and I came to Austin to eat under the wall. We loved everything, the Mah Jong wall, the soup dumplings, the spring rolls, the green beans and the pecan prawns were over the top delicious 😋 we will do this again, love ,love, love?

Wu Chow is excellent. We had a table of 5 and every plate was clean by the end of our meal. The dumplings were especially tasty. The atmosphere is lively and fun as well. Great place for date night or a small group.
