Review Clay Pit - Austin

Prachi Ambegaonkar
This is a cute spot boasting delectable food and a charming ambiance. Our standout appetizer was the crispy Brussels, which resembled Brussels Pakoras, accompanied by a tantalizing chili tamarind chutney that was simply amazing. It struck the perfect balance of flavors. For our main courses, we savored the butter chicken with garlic naan, a rich and tangy delight. However, the achari chicken left us a tad underwhelmed compared to the other two dishes. The flexibility to customize the spice level to your preference is a thoughtful touch. I strongly recommend making a reservation here. As for parking, it can be a bit challenging to find, but there are paid parking garages nearby. Overall, our experience at this establishment was good. The service was impeccable, and our server took excellent care of us. I would certainly return to try more of their offerings!

It is one of the best places we have ever eaten. Tried multiple dishes sharing with people. Would have liked some more goat in the goat curry dish, but the flavor was great. If you need mild, just ask, and they respect that. The Nan was pretty good. One of our favorites was the new dish peppered chicken.

Delicious from beginning to end. Mango lazis were phenomenal. We ordered veggie samosas and chicken brianni. All delicious. And the guy at the bar super nice!.the place is also very cute and clean. Will be back!

I've been going here off and on for years. The restaurant has gone through a few changes, but the food quality has never suffered. I feel the food is more like Indian fusion rather than true Indian food. I have several Indian friends, and they tell me as well that the food is not true Indian but is indeed some of the best Indian inspired food they've ever had. This evening I've had papadum, naan, and a main course called khuroos e tursh. It's chicken with a spinach stuffing covered in an amazing cashew based sauce.

The staff were very accommodating. We showed up on a weekday with no reservation for lunchtime and were seated right away, even though the place was busy. After our meal, we asked if we could sit at the (empty) bar for a while and have a drink. Again, we were accommodated elegantly. My food (a lunch hour special bowl) was visually beautiful. The server asked how hot I liked my food, and it was perfectly suited to my taste. The dining rooms can get very noisy during busy hours.

Nice selection of Indian food, they also have lunch specials. Most of the dishes have options to what level of spice before the dish is served. Service was excellent and helpful. Place was very clean and has a nice relaxing decor. Flavors in all the foods were very good. Enjoy dinning here and will be back for sure.

Taste of India now at Austin! Love the food and their service. However, the playlist could be improved.

If you're in search of a truly unique and flavorful Indian dining experience, look no further. This restaurant's Tandoori Broccoli and Dahi Puri will transport your taste buds to new heights, while the Nariyal Chicken Curry will leave you craving for more. With its impeccable flavors, attentive service, and inviting ambiance, this establishment has earned its rightful place among the best Indian cuisine offerings in town.

Absolutely loved it. Since of the best Indian food I've had. Excellent flavor and service. Ready to find, close parking, not a wait in the late afternoon.

The lobby was very welcoming and service was amazing from the start! The man at the front desk had such a warm smile and high spirited. We ordered some cocktails to start and I HAVE to recommend the Karmic Buzz. It is served with a flower you eat before drinking and it numbs your mouth! Drinking it felt like pops rocks and it was such an exciting experience! The dinner itself was a 10/10 with well rounded flavor and perfectly cooked meats. Everything has succeeded our expectations and we'll need this as our go to place for Indian eats!

Enjoyed the meal and the cozy, rustic atmosphere. The tandoori dishes were tasty, though the wait was quite long. The staff was friendly and thoughtful, but the food's arrival was delayed. While it didn't offer the most authentic Indian flavors, the naan bread was a bit more doughy than fluffy, it was satisfactory. The pricing was quite reasonable for the quantity of food we received! If you're not seeking a truly authentic Indian culinary experience, this place is a decent choice!

I was visiting Austin and we came here as a group. I always wanted to try Indian food. The restaurant appeared clean, nice layout, and my food as excellent. Plate presentation was very nice and the meal was tasty. I only wish I could add it to my regular rotation for eating out.

I liked the food and the ambience. Very rustic. The tandoori were good, but they took long. The servers were nice and considerate but somehow the food took very long. Not the most authentic Indian food, the naan bread was very doughy and not fluffy enough, but it gets the job done. Very good price for the amount of food we had! If you’re not looking for authentic Indian food specifically, this place will do for you!

We love Indian Cuisine and enjoy trying different places. The restaurant was pretty spacious with a lot of seating. The service was quick and the food was fresh and full of flavor. We tried various dishes and enjoyed them all. The samosas were very tasty. The garlic Naan was also delightful. We will certainly recommend this spot to anyone looking for a great meal.

This restaurant isn't the most obvious in the neighborhood... but it is fantastic! Had a super tasty teeka marsalla and garlic cheese Naan bread. The servers were also awesome. Highly recommend!!!

Always amazing experience at Clay Pit! Friendly, knowledgeable staff, and delicious food. Highly recommend the jalapeño cheese naan, chicken tikka masala, and the Korma with paneer!

Great meal, was quickly seated, and attentive service. The “hot” was more of a medium, but outside of that great experience. Will be returning.

The food was good, the service was terrible. We ordered aloo naan and the basil garlic naan , as well as chicken tikka masala. I had a mango lemonade it was very watered down, tasted more like mango water than lemonade. The waiter took forever to refill our drinks. My husband and his friend had to wait 10-15 minutes after flagging the waiter down for new beers. My friend had to wait at least 10 minutes to get a refill on her juice. I stuck with water and let me just say the water guy was on point. My glass was never below halfway. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time, I ordered hot and it had the Same amount of spice as the Desi hot. I might go again, but honestly I'd rather order takeout than sit in the restaurant again.

The food was great! The service was terrible. I think it is because our waiter had too many tables. I ordered a martini and by the time I received the drink, it was room temperature.

The ambience is amazing. We were a large group and it took a while to get seated since we didn’t have reservation - 1 hour to get seated and then 1 hour to get served - total of 2.5 hours spent for slightly above average food. Dallas has many better food choices - but can definitely take cue on ambience and decor from Clay Pit.

Very nice place, good atmosphere, delicious food, it is worth the price

This restaurant serves very Americanized type of Indian food. The spices did not appear to be fresh and aromatic and quite mild for a medium hot request. The food is okay for those who haven't experienced authentic Indian food as you would get in a city like London UK for example. Additionally the portions were small for what one would expect from an American restaurant. For example an order of tandoori bread consisted only of one loaf of tandoori bread quartered. An order of steamed mussels cost $11 for a medium size bowl and it didn't come with any bread to mop the sauce. I say you can still visit the restaurant but lower your expectations.

This is the best Indian food I’ve had in ATX, & some of the best I’ve ever had anywhere.

The tikka massala was good BUT the rice had large onion slices in it and I had said no onions in the massala. I never would have guessed they put onions in rice! When I asked for rice with no onions the server said not possible as rice is made in batches . Not

Food was amazing. I would highly suggest getting the muscles; the sauce is amazing. Paige was our waitress and she was on top of everything! Even gave my boyfriend and I a couple recommendations for local coffee shops. We found the portions to be very fair for the price. We had so many leftovers!

The Clay Pit is my favorite brunch spot. The buffet selection is incredible! Every visit to The Clay Pit is as enjoyable as the last.

Food was bland, much better tasting & more "Authentic" Indian Food can be found at several other options around Austin. Not worth the wait & the service was lacking. The decor is the only thing they have going for them. Will not be returning

Waited over 40 minutes for any sort of service, and never got it. No appetizer, or drink refill from our server, Matt. We had to get our own drinks from the bar. All whilst celebrating a birthday and anniversary. I hate to bring race into it, but the table was comprised of mainly minorities, which I truly believe played into the poor service. As a white woman I've never experienced such poor service. It saddens my heart to witness it. The only saving grace was the manager, who truly was an exceptional man. He will be the only reason I will return.

A little hard to find my first time. But, it was SOOO worth the search. Food was awesome. Enough that I had leftovers for lunch. If you like Indian food, give this place a try.

Best Indian food we ever had.... besides having someone come over to our table and being an asshole to my 4yr old son who wasn't doing anything but watching his cartoons on his phone while everyone was loud in the restaurant.... would be a 5 stars but I don't appreciate having an asshole going all over my food just to be a dick to my son
Caroline Long
The food was good, but smaller portions for more expense than other Indian places. The service was not good. Our waiter did not ask for our drink orders, we had to flag him down to get appetizers, it took a long time to get our dinner and the waiter made it seem like we were inconveniencing him. He forgot things we asked for, then brought the check before we could order dessert. I ordered the mango cheesecake for dessert, but it was still frozen. I was pretty disappointed after years of wanting to eat here. I don't plan to go back. There are so many other Indian places with really sweet people who care about their customers. (Star of India, Saffron, Taj Palace)

My must go to place every time I come to Austin. The food is delicious and the service is excellent.
