Athena Taverna

We were pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and quality of the food. Baked feta app was awesome. Athena special chicken sandwich was done perfectly. My wife had the spinach pie with side salad and thought it was very good. We took hope a slice of baklava cheesecake and picked at it while waiting for the check and know it won’t last long. Nice addition to the neighborhood.

Had a wonderful lunch today at Athena Taverna. Between the four of us at our booth, we tried Moussaka, Spinach salad with a skewer of delicious chicken, Athenian pizza, and wrapped grape leaves. All of the items were fresh, and none of us was disappointed in our respective choices. The service was friendly and attentive, and the experience was truly enjoyable. We will definitely be back. Thanks to Bob Lang and his staff.

I picked up takeout last night for my wife and I. We both got gyros, which were decent. However, side orders or what looked like Uncle Ben’s 90-second rice pilaf cost $4.25 apiece. Apparently nothing comes with a gyro; thought I was substituting rice for fries and was taken aback to be paying $8.50 for two small containers of mediocre rice. The stuffed grape leaves were good, but again overpriced at $8 for 5 small ones. I also paid $9 for a small Athenian salad that consisted mainly of crummy lettuce and old, mushy mushrooms. The staff forgot to add their house dressing. Overpriced and inconsistent. Don’t think I’ll be going back even though it’s right up the street. Very disappointing.

We ate here after they were open for about a week and really liked it. The food was really good, especially the Gyro. The only criticism on the food was the vegetables. Both the green beans and the broccoli were inconsistently cooked and water logged. It would be much better if they fresh sauté the vegetables to order. Otherwise we had good service and very good food.

We are always looking for a great Greek Restaurant after waiting for a new one to open after the last one closed down. This is not it. We were disappointed in the food, the wait, and atmosphere was focused on the business itself. Not one person looked happy in the restaurant. While sure, they are new, getting through the kinks, this is more than kinks. It took over 25 min to get 2 basic appetizers. One which was not even ours, and after returned it came and was 1 skewer no flavor. So value for quantity no. We asked how much longer would we wait for main course, about 15 to 20 more min. When it arrived, pita was burned, rice over cooked and canned veggies for a $50 meal. So quality poor and again lack of flavor. The FOH staff was kind and trying to manage with the backed up orders, missing short line items, another table waited about 30 min for a Greek Salad; but you could tell they were uncomfortable with the service from the BOH. There was no management staff, if they were there, no where in site, you could hear bickering staff conversations through the house due to late service and poor staff communications. I would not return even someone gave me a free meal unless I heard they changed everything else in the business.

Having lived many years of my life in Greece, I've always sought out great Greek food restaurants here in the US. They're rare, hard to find, so I tried Athena Taverna on the off chance that it might be pretty good. Apparently, they just opened about four months ago. I only got the staple gyro and fries. The gyro was the most authentic gyro I've tasted outside of the island of Crete. The fries were crispy, extremely hot, and very fresh. Can't wait to come back again to try the souvlaki, moussaka, baklava, etc etc. Good job! July 10th review: today I brought my wife for our lunch. The restaurant only had a few other couples in there, so we were taken care of fantastically. George and his crew had food on our table in less than 10 minutes. Today we went for the souvlaki, meat platter, and the village salad. My wife also having lived in Greece, commented that the food was very authentic. The tzatziki was perfect, authentic, and exactly what you'd expect from a Greek restaurant in Greece. The Village salad was authentic as well, the meat off of the meat platter was hot, Juicy and Delicious. Another great job from this authentic Greek restaurant. Looking forward to coming back again. Next time I'll save room for the baklava

We got carry out... staff was very friendly (only reason for two stars instead of one) but it took 45 min for our order and the place was empty. Food, all the food, was in desperate need of seasoning. There was no flavor in anything. And I mean NO FLAVOR. We got calamari, greek salad, and the 3 meat skewer platter. Calamari, pork, chicken, and beef were all over cooked. Pita was dry. Veggies were mushy and overcooked. Rice was bland. I am hoping that the restaurant reads this and makes some changes. I was really looking forward to having a good greek place in the Cape! Will give them another try in a few months to see if they changed things.
