Review Northside Cafe - Winterset

Kelli Schoney
First time here and out whole group loved it. Walked into the historic shop and was immediately greeted by a friendly waitress who helped me right away. We got our order to go, and it was ready exactly when they said it would be. Some of the best fried pickles I’ve had - spears, but in thin slices and so delicious. Highly recommend the adult grilled cheese. All the food was good - the bread tasted very fresh, like it was made that day- and every person in our group wants to visit again soon!

There is a lot of history here, and it certainly has a rustic old charm. From the wood floors, old fashioned bar, and obviously aged booths, this place has a nice feel. If upscale and modern are your thing, this place isn't for you. The staff is all friendly. The menu (when I was there at 9:30am) was limited to breakfast, but had all the usual suspects. I had the chicken fried steak, eggs, and hash browns. The kids had a (very cute) French toast and a cinnamon roll. Everything was simple, delicious, but not mentionably good or bad. The fresh squeezed lemonade was nice (though a bit pricey). Prices are typical to a bit high. Portions were filling. I'd like to try it again and if I lived in Winterset I'd be back when looking for breakfast out. I don't, so there would have to be another reason for me to come to Winterset. I'd recommend it to anyone in the area, but wouldn't recommend a special trip just for it.

Those new Prime Rib Sliders are off the hook! They have them every first week of the month. Order them! Ask for Hayley, she was a fantastic waitress.

Off the beaten path!. Really enjoyed our meal here. I had roasted chicken and my husband had the hamburger. The homemade apple was wonderful

The Northside Cafe is simply wonderful. It has that small town charm and the food was delish. I'd never tried a Tenderloin before and it was worth every penny. Plus, they filmed scenes from the popular movie Bridges of Madison County here. I highly recommend stopping by and trying the food, seeing the spot where Clint Eastwoods character and Meryl Streeps character met. Dont forget to order and Old Fashioned Cherry Coke while you're there as well.

The lobster pot pie was incredible, service was super friendly and helpful and one of the wonderful owners gifted me a book of poetry inspired by the bridges. I'd travel back to the Northside Cafe from Australia in a heartbeat ❤️

Hand patted buger with crynchy edges and homemade thin crispy delicious onion rings...the food was diner divine in a historic environment. I'd drive to Winterset just for this but I also checked out Hogback Covered Bridge!

The food and service were great, the owner told the history of the area and it was our final stop on The Bridges of Madison County self guided and developed movie tour.

I've been working in Winterset for almost two years now and never tried this little gem. I don't like to eat out much, but I can't believe I waited this long to try their food. I was a little sticker shocked at first being this is rural Iowa. I had their lunch special, chicken florentine sandwich and a cup of their house cream of mushroom soup. Wow! I took that first slurp of soup and I was pleasantly surprised. Great texture and flavor! The sandwich was juicy and bursting with flavors too. I'll definitely be going back there again to try something else! Definitely worth the $$$.

The wait staff was friendly...the food was awesome and the service was fast. I would recommend this restaurant to all my friends if they’re in the area

Four of us gathered for lunch at Northside Cafe in May. We only see each other once a year so wanted a place where we could visit, eat and just relax. My husband and I shared a wonderful tenderloin that was divided for us. The waitress and her trainee were so helpful. We topped our meal off with a rhubarb/strawberry crisp. Our waitress even divided the dessert. We will be back!!

We eat here regularly because the food is SO good. The sweet potato fries melt in your mouth. The local beer and wine they offer never disappoints.

Really enjoy the friendly staff and small town ambience to go along with a large menu of great homemade Iowa meals! You'll enjoy whatever you order, but be sure to save room for the apple or blueberry crisp (with ice cream, of course)!

Drove from Lacona. Always like a place that can get my bacon "crispy". I'd recommend eating there.

First time at the Northside cafe. Service and atmosphere were great. The owner stopped to talk to us, very nice guy originally from New Orleans. I've eaten muffelattas in new Orleans. And I must say. These muffelattas were just as good. They do a fantastic job. Very filling. The pork tenderloin was also very good.

My husband and I go on an annual wine weekend with his sisters each year. We had a delicious dinner at Northside Cafe on Friday so we went back this morning for breakfast and it did not disappoint! First off, Michelle welcomed us with open arms on Friday and welcomed us back this morning like old friends! For dinner on Friday I had the grownup Mac & cheese and added grilled onions and bacon...delicious! My husband had one of their massive pork tenderloins (with jalapeños) and loved it! Today my husband and I shared the skillet breakfast and it was fantastic! Stop by and take pictures at the counter Clint Eastwood sat at in the movie “The Bridges of Madison County” and the John Wayne memorabilia. We will certainly stop in again if we get back to the area!

My wife and I stopped in here a couple of weeks ago while touring some of the bridges and the John Wayne museum. We each had one of their tenderloins and loved them! I would highly recommend a stop here if you are ever in the area!

Went this Sunday after church-- decided to give 'er a chance in Winterset! Oddly enough did not get breakfast items. Seated right away👍. Staff uber friendly, even made me fresh pot of decaf coffee(very good! Local brand - forget name) I got the Tenderloin cause it sounded good- salad with homemade 1000 Island (ALL dressings are homemade). My compadre got fresh local greens Spinach Salad! The Tenderloin had a nice Panko crust (good reheated too) and thick juiciness! Highly recommended!! The Bun was airy and nutty, nicely toasted and GREaT compliment to sammy! The salad was a nice cold crunch between bites. The Spinach salad had egg, chicken, bacon (good crunch/cook on the bits) and other accoutrements. It was the special, along with Ham Balls, but I was not feeling Ham-ball-ee. It was a nice local choice with local flair!!!

Had a tenderloin for dinner last night. The best tenderloin around. Definitely enough for 2. Highly recommended
