A beautiful and valuable gem in Winchester. The MSV does an outstanding job at providing the community with art and a healthy place to share with friends and family. Art shows change constantly and there's also permanent displays that talk about the rich history of our area. The grounds are beautiful, especially with the new walking trail that we are so fortunate to have. Throughout it, you can find different art installations as well, while you walk, run, or bike, even with your dog(s)! The gardens are amazing to see, and they open in April for to spring/summer. The museum also offers many classes for children and adults. Highly recommend!
This is a great place to walk your dogs, but tick season has begun. I found a deer tick crawling my one of my pups. Don't forget to treat your dog with tick prevention meds and check your pup for ticks after the walk. Very dogfriendly and the main trail around the property is paved with tiny gravel. One part of the park, behind the museum, is through trees and has a section on the left that captures photographs of the Appalachian trail. When about half way through the trail, the trail goes through open space with different memorials like trees forming a circle of large stones forming a circle. There is also where the large sculptures are. The walk was 2.32 miles but it went by pretty fast. I stopped in the museum to use the restroom and the lady working there was very nice, courtesy and helpful. I browsed the gift shop, and got some honey made by the monks to support them and I love honey. The museum looked very nice.
On my way to Virginia I decided to stop in Winchester to check out the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. Unfortunately we were there on a Monday. I should have done a little better research before I went…The museum is actually closed on Mondays. However, the stop was not a total loss. The walking trails were open, and we were able to stroll trough the grounds to see the flowering trees and spring blooms. It’s a beautiful walk that is open to the community.
Lovely strolling through these enchanted gardens. Check out the veggie garden and the sculptures are very unique.
We walked around the gardens. Such a beautiful place. The origami sculptures were spectacular. We enjoyed it a lot.
We went to the museum last week on a very cold morning. There were very few people there and not a lot to see as much of the museum was closed off while they get other exhibits ready. The staff that greeted us were very nice and helpful. The focus of the museum during our visit was looking at the contributions of African Americans in the Shenandoah Valley and women, which is great and very interesting. We were kind of surprised by the obvious omission of one black immigrant women from Winchester, and that is our new Lt. Governor Winsome Sears. While our Lt. Governor did not grow up in the Shenandoah Valley, she has called Winchester her home for many years now. She is the first female lieutenant governor and first black female lieutenant governor, so that is two historic milestones, yet there was no acknowledgement of that anywhere in the museum that I could see. You might think that is because she was only elected a few months ago, but there was also a display with references to the war in Ukraine, so it's not like the museum doesn't keep up with current issues. I suspect the oversight is purposeful as Lt. Governor Sears does not have the ideology that museum leadership adheres to. I feel full equality for women and minorities (especially Blacks) will not come to America until they are allowed by elites to have nonconforming viewpoints. It is a metastasized form of systemic racism that is hard to get rid of. I loved the pink-hatted white woman picture which told me a lot! I look forward to coming back when the weather is warmer and walking through the beautiful grounds around the museum.
This a great place to go to they have so much to see they really do well of showing the history of the Shenandoah vally area. The staff here are very knowledgeable it nice you can go online and see there items and get information as well they will. Responded to question very quickly to on line questions they are very helpful.we had a good time here and believe you will as well we do highly recommend.
Exhibits won't keep the kids engaged all day, but it's nice for an afternoon family activity. Plan to return and experience the makerspace. Outdoor trails and walking tours are great for sunny day get-the-wiggles-out trips.
