The tavern reminds me of Colonial Times. The staff are dressed in period clothing and the food is wonderful tasting and the staff is great. I would recommend this to anyone who would like to know what Colonial food tastes like.
Had dinner here three nights in a row! Wonderful hot spiced wine, hot buttered rum, & home made chips & dips! The corn chowder & Welsh rarebit were amazing!! A definite tavern we will return to!
With all the bad changes Williamsburg Foundation has made over the last year it was nice to see the food and hospitality of Chowning's is still amazing. Our waiter, Mark, was the absolute best! His sense of humor and service was fantastic. We got crab cakes, wings, pulled pork and shepherd's pye and it was all very good. Will be going back again and asking for Mark. :)
Kathrine was our server and training someone, excellent. Food was great. My hubby got barbq sandwich, I got appetizer pasty and chips (chips are enough for 5) and good.
Great food, great service and great atmosphere.i had BBQ Ribs, Chips and Dip and Trio sampling of Soups. Well worth the money!
Excellent food and service! Our server stayed "in character" which added to the wonderful experience.
The food an atmosphere were perfection! Our meals and drinks were delicious and our waitress was extremely pleasant. I visit the Revolutionary City frequently and this is always my favorite place to eat! We were sat upstairs this time, but we could hear live music and singing from downstairs, which also added to the colonial experience in tying all of the senses together.
My brother and I went here for a quick lunch. Service was excellent and quick. Try the Sheppard’s Pie and Virginia Pork BBQ Sandwich! Their selection of drinks is good as well that includes Pimms Cup. A nice Tavern experience in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg!
5 stars for the food and wait staff. 3 stars to operations. Our food was very good and our waitress was great. The drinks and food came out all in good timing. However, we made a walk up reservation(only option for indoor seating) and we waited outside for the hour we were told. When we walked in the place was empty yet we only saw a party of 4 leave in the hour we waited. We walked through one area where 1 table out of the 2 were occupied and in our room there were 4 tables(one in each corner) and there was no one occupying any of the tables. They sure do take their time getting people in. It seems like they are putting more effort into the outdoor seating(tent or in garden) but for people wanting the indoor experience be prepared to wait.
The food was amazing! We got the smothered and covered fries and the shepherds pie and both were delicious! We also had a brown ale and a Christmas one that were delicious! The place was beautiful and service lovely!
Nice place to eat. Because of COVID indoor dining is limited but there's plenty of family seating. Had the cheeseburger, and fries. It hit the spot. Check them out on an afternoon in Williamsburg!
The food was ok. The prices were high for what you got. I have it 5 stars for the experience and for our waiter. He was amazing and extremely funny.
That not brunswick stew more like meat soup but good nonetheless. Get the beef trencher and though I was getting a bread bowl thing but more of a beef pita but it was very good as well. So confused but enjoyed everything.
Customers had their choice of 3 dining options: inside (this required a reservation and a 30-45 minute wait), outside in an enclosed tent or outside in the garden. We chose outside in the garden. The food was excellent. I had the BBQ platter and my friend had the shepherds pie. I highly recommend this restaurant for a meal.
Friendly service.
The food was good.
Nice experience.
Such a fun experience! The food was all good, especially the potatoes. It was a very reasonable price, and the waiter was so kind!
