When you think of Cape Cod you think of seafood, but not necessarily sushi. When I went to Wellfleet this past summer, I was psyched to learn that the popular Mac's seafood restaurant had a sushi place in the center of town. I shared a few dishes with the fiance and a friend of ours, and enjoyed all of them!
First visit to Mac's Shack. Outstanding seafood. We will be back.
Best sushi I have ever had! The raw food is excellent, and beer/wine were very good as well. Highly recommended.
Sushi. I just had a really great sushi meal here. I'm going back for more this week.
Try and walk there if you can. I got my car backed into in their tight parking lot last year. That sort of makes you forget whether you had a good meal or not.
Fabulous sushi and seafood! We always look forward to dining here every summer. Thanks for being part of our tradition!
Food consistently fresh and good. First class sushi bar. Not cheap and a but noisy and crowded but I think it's Wellfleet's best.
Previous reviewers are confused! Macs shack on Commercial is one of the best restaurants. The sushi is incredible... Personally I've never experienced bad or rude service... There is a wait at peak times... Because it's so good. Mac's seafood is located down the road at the harbor... It's a different experience: less formal, really more of a grab and go although they have seating overlooking the bay and harbor. It's good in own right and this is where they have ice cream that someone was referencing. I live here trust me. If the wait is long at the shack and it's just 2 of you I recommend you sit at the sushi bar. If you do say hi to Ichi the friendly sushi chef! Plus try the Spanish wine on the menu with the fish!
Great ice ceram comfort food and a great pace to sit.. Good ice cream and great comfort food i like going there 1. there is great ice cream 2.great comfort food 3.you get to eat on picnic tables and se the harbor.but there is nomaly a long line
Great food, good wine list, a bit pricey. Fastest Oyster shucker I have ever seen.
Impressive. Unexpected gastronomic gem in Wellfleet. I thought it was just another pretty location with uninspired seafood from the freezer. The vibe was inviting, the waitstaff friendly and experienced… and the food was more than the sum of its deliciously fresh ingredients. All of our pictured meals exceeded expectations and approached impressive even though they could have kicked back and relied on the churn of tourists to make a margin. Kudos to going above with your menu and delivering on the promise of an edgy blend of cape and Asian dishes.
Don't let the name fool you. Yes, it is rustic but the food is excellent. Has traditional New England/Cape Cod options as well as sushi and other Asian inspired offerings. We had a dozen oysters, fried oyster baos, shrimp and scallop dumplings and steamers. Our son had chicken tenders and fries which were equally good. Service was quick and everything was delicious.
Wellfleet is an adorable little seaside town on Cape Cod with boutiques and places to buy expensive junk. But on Labor Day weekend, the crowds descend upon it to eat the namesake oysters caught in local waters by the pier, waiting an hour plus getting into the 2 or 3 major restaurants there with lines out the door.
“F that,” is my reply.
After visiting the local businesses and learning of the indeterminate wait times, we turned tail and, on the way out of town, hit Mac’s, a local seafood chain’s Wellfleet location, which has all the typical New England seafood items you expect (and the oysters of course) but also sushi made with local fish and lots of other specialties. Effectively, the raw stuff is what they specialize in.
We got a dozen local oysters, which were clean tasting and delicious, excellent specimens but very salty compared to our warm water oysters and not as funky. I liked them, but I'm not sure as much as I do others from, say, the Pacific Northwest or even our Gulf ones, which are bigger and juicer — they are the best raw. Rachel got an oyster Bao; the oysters fry up smaller, saltier and not as juicy as the warm water ones — I prefer the clams up here.
We tried the scallop spicy hand rolls, which were delicious, but it was made of chopped-up local bay scallops and thus were a bit runny, I think they would have been better presented as gunkan-maki (oval), but that’s nitpicky. I also got a “big kahuna” sushi presentation which had local tuna prepared 3 ways (poke, roll, filled with spicy tuna, chopped onion and granny smith apple), Rachel also got a Bahamian-style fish stew that was very peppery. Very enjoyable and sane lunch.
Great seafood place in Wellfleet MA. Extensive menu. Full bar. Both indoor and outdoor seating. Lobster roll was excellent. Korean Fried Chicken sandwich was huge. Waitstaff very friendly. Plenty of parking. Highly recommended.
Very fresh seafood overall. The fish and chips were great and so were both the Hawaiian salmon Poke bowl and the tuna Sashimi. Definitely worth eating here when in the area. Totally recommended!
Fabulous gluten free options! Seafood was excellent and the kids gf chicken tenders were one of the best I’ve had (couldn’t help but try some). Will be trying to come back here once more before our visit to the area ends
The takeaway order was closer to 45 than 30 minutes wait. Excellent lobster roll, though more mayonnaise than preferred. Fries were okay. Good house salad. Others said the clam chowder was good.
Amazing! I have celiac disease and discovered this place on the Find Me Gluten Free app. We were told at check in for a table about the vast gluten free options. We passed the time waiting for a table with delicious great white cocktails, raw oysters, and cocktail shrimp. The staff was fun and kind even on a busy Friday night. Our server told me about how the owner has celiacs and goes above and beyond to ensure a safe kitchen. Fried items are gluten free, and there are many poke items gluten free too. I ordered the fish and chips. It was light and crunchy on a big bed of fries. So good! There are more selection limits on dessert, but we had a great slice of flourless chocolate cake. Would totally visit again! Beautiful summer garden and atmosphere. Plus, all Mac locations are gluten free!
Good sushi and seafood. The wait isn't as long as it appears and just a fun place to visit. Dishes to get include the Thai cakes , lobster roll and the clam chowder soup which were just packed with clams. The only thing I'd skip is the "big Mac" which was a little bland
Best place we visited in the past few years of coming to the Cape. Tough critic here - especially after a week of disappointments. But Mac's Shack SHINES. This place had a wonderful atmosphere, relaxed but highly professional and efficient staff, clean & pleasant settings, the food was EXCELLENT and the accommodations were complete (gave us a very fulfilling experience while also making it pleasant for our 18 month old child). Price points were appropriate for the experience offered.
This restaurant is amazing! Got here at 7:30 on a Saturday night and was quoted an hour and a half to an hour forty-five for a table for two. We were waiting in line to get a drink from the bar maybe a half hour to forty minutes into the wait when we were found by the hostess and sat at the sushi bar. Our waitress, Jodie was an absolute delight. You could tell she enjoyed her job and it showed in her service and responsiveness. Friendly and funny, and seriously a delight. On top of the very good food, she's what made the night memorable. On the food, we had the shishito peppers to start, with the chickpea burger with a side of garlic fries and the seared scallops as mains. Both were excellent, flavorful, and great portions. Pardon the photos of food half-eaten, we were so eager to start I forgot to take a photo at first! All in all, this restaurant is a total catch and would have been well worth the wait, even had we been made to wait the full length we were quoted. Highly recommend this spot for dinner, I'll definitely be back!
Quick and friendly service. My friend and I both opted for sushi and it was great. Very fresh with good flavor combos. I've had fried seafood in the past along with a few other dishes and have always been happy with their offerings. This location is in a cool spot almost to the harbor next to a marsh.
Beautifully prepared and delicious seafood dishes. We had the Yellowtail Collar and Whole Sea Bass as entres and Beet Poke, Brussels Sprouts, and Halibut as sides, all shared amongst the 4 of us. Everything was cooked perfectly and the spiciness of the cauliflower and kale was a nice complement to the Sea Bass and its tapenade.
Service was attentive without being intrusive, and the large tent we ate in felt indoors but there was enough space and ventilation that we felt safe from COVID. We arrived a little before 5 on a Thursday evening - we were seated right away, but there was soon a line waiting to be seated.
Outstanding, fresh food, great service, and welcoming vibes that make you want to stay all night. My whole family says this is the best spot on the Cape. Cheers to another season, Mac's!
Very pricey but good food. I had a water, the Lobster Bisque bowl, and Fish & Chips. After adding in tip the total was $43.56 for just me. I was in a party of three so the table total was over $125. Not worth it, honestly. Especially not with the almost hour and a half wait to be seated. Fun experience since I was visiting from out of state but probably wouldn’t eat here regularly if I were local.
Wow. The scallops and the streamers .......... So good!
Love the atmosphere of this place and service was great. We stopped while passing through and I’m glad we did. We had the Steamer Clams, which were so fresh. They were good, but as a Midwesterner, it’s hard for me to get around the cleaning you have to do to eat these. Still delicious. Also got the Wellfleet fried oysters which were AWESOME.
Lunch at Mac's was such a delight. Classic New England lobster roll was full of big, meaty pieces of lobster. The clam chowder and bucket of onion rings were great. The star of the show was the "Hand Grenades." These baked, perfectly spicy delicious yummies were so perfect that we immediately placed an order for another. Our waiter Marcelle was helpful and attentive and was so entertaining!
Enjoyed being seated quickly by requesting the sushi bar where you can still order from the complete menu. Amazing menu and options. Service and food were superb. I'd recommend the flour less chocolate cake for dessert. The strawberry coulis was so spot on.
