I love the Lamb Sandwich, house potatoes were crispy outside and creamy inside, sprinkled with finely sliced shallots (or spring onions). The Tempura Kale, OK, batter did not taste or crisp like tempura.
My guest liked the Orange Kefir (dessert). Flavor was very light and texture somewhat grainy.
But I would go again!
Ethiopian wings were amazing. Bison burger was a lot more tender than I expected. Great lighting.
A must visit just ahead of sunset. Excellent, creative dishes. The owner makes you feel like family.
Visiting from LA and this was one of the few places in DC where I felt comfortable. There's enough diversity in there, you won't feel uncomfortable as a minority.
Bar had plenty of seating and it wasn't packed. Loved it.
Bartender was also the waiter. He was very attentive and kind. Drinks were good and strong. Food was good old-fashioned bar food. Kitchen does close later in the night!
This is a restaurant review, I can't speak for the bar. It's a good place, but I don't choose to go there when it's my call, as it's just not as good as the other options in the area. The service is always just a bit slow, the food is often a bit salty or a step below where it should be flavor-wise. Beer selection is just fine. Again, I like Steel Plate, but for me it's just a half step behind the other places in the neighborhood.
Took my Mom to Steel Plate for dinner.
First, when I explained that my Mom is hard of hearing, the hostess did her best to try to find us a quieter spot, which I appreciated.
Second - we were both really pleased/pleasantly surprised/impressed with the food. I had the duck tacos, Mom had the Trout, and we shared an order of the tempura kale. All really quite tasty, and well- presented.
Third, our server was great - taking time out even though it was getting busy to answer our questions.
I grew up in the neighborhood, and when I was a kid, there were NO good restaurants (or even good local hang-out spots) in Brookland. As a teen, there were a couple (the now-gone Colonel Brooks Tavern, and Ellis Island). I am pleased to see that there are now multiple good places for food and hanging out in the neighborhood.
This bar has the best vibe in Brookland. I always end up striking up a conversation with neighbors and other locals. The food is good and has some adventurous options inspired by cuisines all over the world (Congolese catfish, Mediterranean lamb, burgers, poutine, Ethiopian wings). Since they opened, the consistency has definitely improved as well. The beer selection is good but not great. The cocktails are great and the whiskey selection is fantastic if pricey. And I love that it's right around the corner from my place.
Great spot for a drink and some well done food. Great drink selection, and the food is done with finesse. It's definitely a place in the neighborhood that doesn't get enough love. The decor and layout is by far the most refined of all the other Brookland locations.
Fantastic. Cool digs, small but decent beer list, but the food was what surprised me. Cauliflower grits were phenomenal, and the steel plate burger was fantastic. At medium rare, mine was delicious. My friend got hers medium well, which is a sin, but she got just what she asked for: an over cooked blackened burnt tasting burger. (eye roll) so they'll serve what you ask for, even if it's ridiculous.
Also, the fries were good and the onion rings different from any other I've had before. Weren't my fav, personally, but you could tell they're not cheap frozen rings; they're legit.
Very eclectic food. I've never seen a whole goat on the menu before. Apparently when it's ordered they have a pit in the back where they roast it and the amazing smell permeates the surrounding areas. The hostess has some great recommendations. It can get pretty loud with competing music, tv, and chatter along with . If you're looking for a quiet place to chat you may want another place.
