Review Rooster & Owl - Washington DC

Cory Laws
I don't impress easily. I have high standards, but I also understand different classes of restaurants. We came to celebrate my 70th birthday. My wife picked the restaurant. We arrived right on time and were immediately seated at a corner table with a view of the entire place. Our server was Ginger, who was very personable and knowledgeable. We did the tasting menu with wine pairing. The food was excellent, as expected. What was both surprising and most impressive was the efficiency of the staff. As soon as we finished a course, the table was cleared and cleaned, and new setups delivered. Explanations for every dish and wine selection were on point. Chris, the manager, had a significant presence, keeping an eye on everything. He has the presence of an owner. Suffice it to say we were suitably impressed. Two Michelin stars. Well deserved.

Phenomenal food experience. I always judge my fine dining experiences by a simple question “was it worth the price”? And Rooster and Owl resoundingly was. I went with a group of four which is perfect because it allowed us to order every dish off the menu. I’m still thinking about the Kampachi, lobster autumn roll, duck breast, and goat cheese cheesecake. Service is what you expect, just amazing in every way. A very special night with friends and a meal I won’t forget!

Absolutely phenomenal food all around. Every course that we tasted and shared were full of flavors and were well presented. Pasta, steak, quail, striped bass, desserts - all fantastic! Cocktails were good, the R&O Fashioned cocktail particularly was great! Service was attentive throughout. The meal here was very expensive, but perfect for a special occasion.

The food at Rooster & Owl is extremely good. They change their menu seasonally and everything is delicious regardless of what’s on the menu. I would recommend Rooster & Owl for a party of 4 or fewer. They may want to reconsider their large party policy (5+). Service had some highs and lows with kinks to work out, but once they do, Rooster & Owl will be among the very best.

FOOD was fun! Every plate had its own delicious and authentic taste. The most I liked among the plates was kampachi raw scallop, Halibut w clam sauce, duck breast and all the desserts. Portion was not that large but filling with some drink. Dining was slightly chill to me without coat on.

Truly a Michelin star experience, from the moment you sit down, to the moment you leave. Impeccable food, wonderful interior that feels like someone's apartment. The staff make you feel comfortable and make sure all your needs are met. Truly a place where I felt the overall experience was as good as the fantastic food.

Totally worth every penny. I haven’t gone to many Michelin restaurants, but this has to be my pick for the best value out of the ones I’ve been to so far. Every course was delicious and rich with many layers of different flavors and texture that surprised us with how well it all blended together. We honestly did not have anything we didn’t love, but the Hong Kong style warm pineapple buns was the most mind-blowing favorite for us. I would literally buy a dozen from the restaurant if that was possible (and I don’t even like pineapple buns that much!). Service was amazing, vibe was cozy and more intimate. 100% would recommend for a date night or special occasion celebration.

Wow, if you’re looking for a wonderful culinary experience, this is your place. To preface my food review, this is my first Michelin star restaurant and I didn’t really know what to expect. I can say this place really makes it feel like a “normal” restaurant and wasn’t trying to be over the top fancy or anything which I appreciate. They let the food speak for itself which it certainly did. Every dish is unique and comes plated in an array of colors, flavors, and aromas that just delight all of your senses. I didn’t even know what most things were, I just knew that everything was delicious and I had to savor each and every bite. Our favorite courses that really stood out included the banh mi, scallion naan, pan roasted quail, and hummingbird cake. Id also highly recommend the wine pairing which was a great choice to go with our courses! As if the food wasn’t good enough, this place has the best service I’ve ever experienced. They truly work as a team to make sure you are taken care of, it was actually insane how well they worked together. Big shout out to Kennedy who was amazing and answered all of our questions about the food/wines. The detail she provided and recommendations she made were 10/10, I was blown away by her knowledge and hospitality. To top everything off, we decided to dine here for an anniversary and we were greeted with complimentary champagne and a personalized note. As I said, this is really a dining experience instead of just another great meal. Give it a try!

The first course was great, the second was questionable (we didn't like the mackerel), the next courses were also fine. We really enjoyed the dessert! The old fashioned was perfection. The space was small but gave an inviting feeling rather than cramped. The service was amazing!!!

This place was amazing! I'm a pretty picky eater sometimes but wanted to get out of my comfort zone for a date night. Tasted everything and it was all so good!!! (Some photos taken while eating, as I forgot to do it when it first arrived lol)

I can't believe no one has done a review yet but I will give it a go. Before our kids were born, my wife and I went out to eat 5-6 nights a week. Most of the time it was nowhere special, but with some regularity this included eating at many of the top, best regarded restaurants in Northern Virginia and DC. Point is, we have a lot of experience with top quality, high end dining. Even though we know the co-founders of Rooster & Owl, we tried to go to the July 23rd pop up with an objective perspective. From our point of view, however, this was one of the best dining experiences we've ever had. That is not an exaggeration - we spent most of the evening and a good portion of the next day discussing with each other just how incredibly good the food was. I can't remember the last time we were so blown away by the taste and quality of a meal - possibly never. Each dish was made with an obvious level of care and attention to detail that is hard to find. More importantly, however, each dish was unique - a recipe that we'd never had before, yet was well thought through and delivered on taste. This is a real gem in the making here, and the chef has an obvious talent that has us looking forward to the next pop up with great anticipation.
