My fiancé and I chose La Chaumière to celebrate our engagement, and it was an experience we'll cherish forever. This restaurant is a rare gem that truly captures the essence of French cuisine and culture in the heart of the DC area.
From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel incredibly special. A huge shoutout to our waiter, Renee, who went above and beyond to ensure our evening was memorable. His service was impeccable, striking the perfect balance between attentiveness and giving us our space to celebrate.
The menu was a delightful surprise, brimming with authentic and traditional French dishes. As lovers of adventurous eating, we were thrilled to find a variety of dishes featuring organ meats – a rarity in the States and a testament to the restaurant's commitment to genuine French culinary traditions.
Each dish we tried was more delicious than the last, prepared with skill and presented beautifully. The ambiance of La Chaumière added to the enchantment, whisking us away to a charming French countryside inn.
We're already looking forward to our next visit to the DC area, as a trip to La Chaumière will undoubtedly be at the top of our list. For anyone seeking an authentic French dining experience, this is the place to go. Thank you, La Chaumière, for making our engagement celebration so extraordinary! 🍽️💍🇫🇷🥂
Great restaurant!! Came here for Valentine's Day, love the location kind of tucked off. The food and service were good. I just had an issue with seating even tho we had reservations we still had to wait I would say about 25 mins but maybe it was because of the occasion. Another issue I had was my lady ordered her streak medium and they brought it out well done but quickly changed it without an issue so that was good. The Lamb chops were amazing which was a great choice, the wine was amazing we both enjoyed it, and the lobster bisque was good as well. I recommend giving this restaurant a try for sure. 👍🏽
We found this restaurant many years ago. It's has been a treat each and every visit. Our latest visit was a quiet Friday lunch with scallops and Fish stew which made our 35 mile journey a special day. You will not be disappointed and finding street parking can happen!
My fiancées family has been coming here since before she was born, and they have always talked about it as one of their favorite restaurants and I now know why. Everything was incredibly flavorful and very authentic to true French food. The quenelles are a must try, along with the soufflé (I preferred the chocolate but the grand marnier was a huge hit).
Highly recommend.
*Tip* the Four Seasons hotel across the way has valet parking for the restaurant, and the restaurant will validate your ticket so that it is free.
Restaurant Week is one of the best seasonal deals for foodies like me. There were some places I had in mind. Unfortunately, every place I wanted to attend was booked. I frantically searched for other places and finally stumbled upon La Chaumiere in Georgetown. It's a restaurant I've never heard of before and decided to explore.
The Atmosphere:
I honestly did not know what to expect. We arrived there and noticed that it was quite intimate, yet lively and very full. I really loved the rustic, French ambiance/atmosphere that added more to the intimate feel. The use of phones is not allowed (as in talking on your phone), which is an understandable rule considering the way the restaurant is set up and aim to accomplish for customers' ultimate dining experience. There is a fireplace in the middle of the restaurant. I am unsure if it's ever utilized.
The Food:
We immediately reviewed the Restaurant Week menu.
- We both ordered the mussels, Moules Provencąle, for the appetizer. The garlic butter used to season the mussels was very tasty. We dipped our bread in the butter. Two of my mussels had some shells stuck in it but were manageable.
- For my entrée, I ordered Steak au Pouivre, medium. I must say I can give the dish the chef's kiss 💋🤌🏾👨🏾🍳. It was yummy and very flavorful. The black peppercorn sauce sent it to another realm. The steak was cooked perfectly, and I was upset that it was gone. I ordered a glass of Restaurant Week wine to compliment my steak dish. The wine was really good, too. My friend ordered the Truite Armandine. Her dish was phenomenal, but she did say it was a couple of bones in her trout.
- For desserts, I ordered the Gâteau au Chocolat. I must say it was the least favorite of the meal entirety. It was merely okay & not worth raving about. The waiter refused to allow me to change my desserts out. My friend ordered the Tarte Aux Pomme & it was so good that she practically finished it in under 5 minutes. I wish I ordered it instead of the dessert I ordered.
Things that could improve:
- Though the wait staff was nice, our waiter seemed too rigid & honestly rude. I would prefer a more friendlier and patient waiter if I come back. It felt like we were being rushed with our dish transitions (the reason why I gave Service 3 out of 5 stars). We were seated late, which made no sense as to why the waiter was seemingly acting impatient.
- For the seafood dishes, it would be nice to double-check for bones and shell fragments. We shouldn't have to crunch on shell/bones nor pick through our food.
Overall, we loved the atmosphere & rustic French ambiance. It certainly felt like we were somewhere in France dining & having a great time. Also, apparently, Julia Child used to frequent the restaurant, which is so cool to me. I see why it's Michelin starred 😭🔥. I do recommend this restaurant, especially for an intimate, lowkey date night out in Georgetown.
Was sat right away after arriving for our reservation. Place was packed but the waiter was very attentive. I ordered the steak, and it was cooked a perfect medium rare. Would come back again!
Had the most amazing dinner at La Chaumiere. New owner was lovely - the place is clearly in good hands. The salmon in puff pastry was fantastic and grand marnier soufflé was other worldly. The wait staff were super friendly and attentive, and it felt like we were dining in a French Country inn. Needless to say, I'll be back soon!
I was in town for a work event and my family that lives in the area took me here since it’s one of their favorite places. It was incredible. It was the best salmon I’ve ever had. I’ve never had French salmon that’s wrapped inside a pastry but it was so delicious. Make sure you order the soufflé when you place your entree order. They chocolate soufflé was PERFECT! Next time I’m in town I’ll be back.
Probably the best French restaurant in the US. They have earned a Michelin star, and from the moment you walk in you know why. Great food and service in the heart of Georgetown.
Best meal. I've never had menu anxiety till here! Everything was amazing. We had a party of 5 and everyone said best meal. Our waiter was wonderful. Atmosphere was great. We could talk n hear each other. Beautiful meal. Will give gift card for Christmas to our local child and come back when we visit. A must go to meal.
Been in Washington for 32 years. This is our very favorite restaurant. For us it is like La Grenouille in New York City. And now, for the second year in a row, we (10 of us) will be here for Christmas Eve. Something I could seldom in all those prior years---always celebrating masses across Christmas Eve
Absolutely delicious food and delightful service. Especially the Tuesday special and the pike dumping in lobster sauce, we literally empty the whole plate. :)
Love the vibe, very cozy, great place to spend quality time with friend.
Thank goodness restaurants like La Chaumiere still exist. Magnificent food, excellent service, and a terrific wine list. No background music, no need to shout to converse. An adult restaurant with quiet conversation. Heaven! Try the venison and the short ribs. Soup du jour was butternut squash. Light as a feather.
Wow. What an experience. Who knew deer medallions could be more tender than filet mignon, or that the salmon served in pastry could rival a beef wellington?? Duck with cooked apple slices that sit warmer in your stomach than a homemade apple pie - I am sincerely blown away. I choose the pike dumplings with lobster sauce, and it redefined dumplings to their rightful, glorious, place. I'll end this review the way I started, WOW.
A cosy place for a good gathering. Good food, especially the desserts. The fire place in the middle of the restaurant is just heartwarming. Wonderful staff and the ambiance is relaxing. Decent wine.
Added to the list of my favorite places in the city.
