I've tried the hot basil chicken (pad ka-prao gai or, more likely, pad horapa gai) a few times. The flavor has been consistently excellent and I will return for it again.
Every component has been cooked perfectly. The chicken was juicy and tender. The carrots were moderately soft and full of savory flavor. The peppers, onions, and mushrooms had a little bite and structure; they were never overcooked. There was an appropriately generous amount of relatively small and very fresh basil leaves.
The Thai chili sauce is divine and it's really the star here. It's rich and slightly gelatinous, which makes it stick to every piece of meat and vegetable it touches, while also providing a supremely satisfying mouthfeel. I suspect they use a high-quality chicken stock to achieve this. The flavor is complex and intensely savory but well-balanced with a subtle sweetness and saltiness. There are strong notes of garlic and little presence of fish sauce, which probably makes it more likely to appeal to the American palate. The level of spiciness is appropriate but I would personally prefer it to be much higher.
Even though I tend to go for the chili-infused fish sauce (nam pla prik) to bump up the flavor and spice level in most Thai restaurants, I can't say that I was really missing the flavor of fish sauce here. The flavors were so well-balanced and satisfying out of the kitchen that I don't think it would be improved by me adding anything.
I only have two minor points of criticism. First, if you request a higher spice level, the balance of the entire dish is thrown off so you're pretty much stuck with the standard one. Second, I always feel like the amount of rice provided is a bit too small. I end up having to consciously conserve it while eating so that I have a few bites of it that I can use to mop up the last bit of delicious Thai chili sauce.
The price and portion size are fair, and completely in-line with what I expect from a restaurant like this. I have always left satisfied.
Great food!!! Have been several times and have always had great food and great service.
Good Thai Food. We actually ate here two nights in a row in order to try several dishes. The massaman curry dishes were excellent...and I mean EXCELLENT!! The best some of us had ever had. I would highly recommend any of those dishes. Seafood items in the food were fresh. The mango/sticky rice dessert was great!
Service was good and the staff was friendly. All around a good restaurant.
Minor Downsides: Two of my favorite Thai side dishes, Thom Kha Gai soup and Summer (Fresh) Rolls, were lacking in flavor compared to the many other Thai restaurants we've eaten at. I also tried the cashew nut chicken one of the nights. It came in a very dark, overwhelming garlic sauce and only about 3 cashews in the entire dish. Stick with the wonderful curries!
Red Jasmine is great! Very good and very friendly. We are from out of town and thought we would give it a try and boy are we pleased.
The peanut sauce for the Satay is real and very good. Not just heated peanut butter.
The dishes are very tasty and well presented and the atmosphere is wonderful.
We will definitely return when in town.
Just had a great lunch here. My boyfriend are pretty picky, and we were a little hesitant coming to this small town and finding anything but greasy burger places. We thoroughly enjoyed both of our meals. Service was good too, very friendly and kind. The proportions were great for us, and the meal was fresh. I'm a vegetarian, got the Pad Thai and was pleasantly surprised to find sqwhich and zucchini, which was new to me and a delicious addition. Boyfriend had excellent duck and said it was really good quality too. We're used to fine dining in DC, and this matched the quality but at a great price.
Big city flavor in a small town. I have tried almost half the menu and every one was delicious.
Yum!. Red Jasmine has been a favorite of mine for many years now. If you are looking for Thai, or Asian fare in general, I think you will be hard pressed to find anything better in the Roanoke area. Well worth the trip to Vinton.
Best Thai Food in Roanoke, VA. I have eaten at Red Jasmine 3 or 4 times. I ate something different each time, and it was all wonderful. This is one of the best restaurants in Roanoke.
One of the Best. I eat a lot of Thai and visit many different Thai restaurants in many different cities. This is one of my favorites, great food, very good service. Who would have thought that there would be an excellent Thai restaurant in downtown Vinton, VA.
Unbelievable. This restaurant is worth the drive to Vinton. Not on the menu: Drunken noodle w/the thin noodles. Absolutely nothing like it! Spices are perfect, shrimp, calamari, mussels. Your tongue sings all the way home! An absolute favorite. Great if you feel you are coming down with something. This will drive any cold bug away immediately! Service is great, of course.
I really enjoyed the hot basil dish. Very traditional meal and the best Thai I have had since I moved from a big city to a small city. The Thai tea was good too.
Thai is terrific!. Love Thai cuisine and this is the best in the area. (or out of the area)- The owner, Noot, is most hospitable and never forgets her customers - or what foods and drink they usually like. The food is fresh, cooked to order, spiced to your liking. The Thai iced tea is really good. Well worth trying this restaurant out. You will return- many times over!
I have never had a bad meal here and the owner/employee is the sweetest person. Always remembers us no matter how long its been since we've last stopped by. And the iced Thai tea and coffee beats Starbucks any day!
Oh my gosh!!!!!! The pad thai and satay is AMAZING!!!!! service was fast, the woman was so kind, thai tea was great! Sooo good!!!
Update: second time here and the food is just as amazing as the first time!! The owner is so sweet and kind!
I find the food here to be very good and tasty. I can't say I'm an expert in Thai food but when compared to other Thai restaurants I've been to Red Jasmine is very good. We've had all the curry dishes and have beef excellent. I have also had the Bangkok duck and was cooked and tasted great.
The Pad Thai also was very good along with the Chicken Satay. So far I haven't had a bad meal from there and the service has been very good and they will adjust to flavor or hotness.
My go to place for Thai food. I love their Chicken Rama Garden.
Red Jasmine is a wonderful Thai restaurant in downtown Vinton. We enjoyed a delicious meal of red curry and pad Thai. The food was fresh and had just the right heat. It was well worth the 35 mile drive! Currently they are only doing take-out due to Covid restrictions. We look forward to returning and dining in the restaurant.
Our favorite Thai restaurant in the Roanoke area. Pleasant atmosphere, very attentive wait staff and delicious dishes. I had the Amazing Duck plate tonight. The duck was moist and tender, and the accompanying vegetables were just cooked enough to be tender and flavorful. Always fresh vegetables, never frozen. Their peanut dressing is wonderful on their garden salad.
Awesome. My favourite Thai restaurant. The owner does it all and she is so polite, friendly and very capable. The atmosphere is welcoming, not overdone! Best pad Thai ever..I get the shrimp version. Her curries come with your choice of protein. I always leave feeling taken care of and at very, very reasonable prices. Give it a try! You won't regret it
