Review Sam's Southern Eatery - Tulsa

David Moran
The biggest fried shrimp that I've ever seen served in a fast food restaurant. Was in town for the day with my girlfriend and we stopped in on the way to the river. Huge portions. The fried catfish was excellent, tasted fresh and fantastic cornmeal breading. It was kind of expensive for fast food but not terrible since the shrimp and catfish portions were huge. They did forget my fries but when we called they gladly said we could come back, we didn't. We were too full. We really love Tulsa. We're coming back, so get my order of fries ready.

Delicious food and the service is spectacular. Red beans and rice were a hit! I actually dropped my leftovers on the way out and they insisted on making me fresh food to go. Will definitely be back! Thank you!!

This is a good little seafood restaurant! Pictured here is the 2 whole catfish meal that comes with two sides ( I chose fried okra and red beans and rice). The fish is always expertly prepared and is made fresh after you place your order. It comes with all of the must have sauces that's needed to make your dish sing with flavor! You may have to wait about 10-15 minutes if ordering at the counter but calling ahead is also a good idea! I guarantee that your food will not disappoint. The service is always great and friendly.

Great place to eat and fast too. Quality seafood and chicken. Cooked right and they PAY ATTENTION TO DETAILS. Something that seriously lacks in today's restaurants. Shrimp is huge!!! Can anyone say small lobster? Gobcheck this place out!!!

Service was above-and-beyond excellent. The food was okay, but not what I would expect from a mom-and-pop southern place. Thanks for the meal!

Absolutely delicious, Your mouth deserves the best, Most sea food in town is tough to chew. But this place both times I've ordered my fish, it came out flaky with a thin coat of seasoned breading that didn't compromise the crispy texture, allowing for easy chewy and comfort memories of childhood to remind you, this is exactly how fried catfish should taste. But trust me the shrimp chicken crab cakes and oysters r the best I've had! Take someone with you and eat at Sams

Food was good, some of the atmosphere not so great. I think I would order take out.

Get down here and get this fish, get to know this place and it's menu and it will become one of your favorite spots in Tulsa. Fried, Grilled, it doesn't matter your going to come back again and again and again.

I got a 4 piece chicken dinner with 4 pieces of chicken and red beans and rice and coleslaw. The chicken was big pieces that was moist and tender. The red beans and rice have a great favor. The coleslaw was crunchy, was not too runny and not too sweet. We eat here regularly and are always pleased with the service and the food.

My hubby and u just ate here and I have to say IT WAS ALL ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS !!! This is my new go-to for my fish and shrimp cravings. The portions are very generous and I did remember to take a photo before I tried to devour it. Thank you to the Owner and cook and also the waitress !!!! Everything was cooked to perfection !!!!

This place is SO good, we realized when leaving that we stayed way past closing time. They did not rush us and we’re very hospitable. Will be back and will bring others with me next time! Amazing service, delicious food!

We ate at the new Sams in Bartlesville and we had the catfish.
We really enjoyed the dinner and the staff was very friendly and helpful! 👍👍👍👍👍

I have been to this place on multiple occasions. Last night they served me fried shrimp that was BAD! I have been fishing with better shrimp than the ones served. Wouldn't recommend this place to my worse enemy.

I ate a togo fried oyster po boy and catfish platter in the OKLAHOMA CITY location. It was the best in the city. I also found a PEARL when I bit into my oyster po boy! Love this place 23rd and Villa okc

The fried shrimp was awesome! I should have just ordered that. The gumbo had a burnt flavor, like the roux had been burned. I ate 2 bites. Yuck. The fried pickles were over seasoned and the ranch I ordered wasn't in our to-go order. My husband bought a $16 meal and they forgot to put the sides in with the order. The fries were over cooked. The hush puppies were also dry and over cooked. I expected more after spending $98 on a meal. Disappointed! I was offered free sides if I drive 30 minutes back to the restaurant.

For those who don't know, Sam's Southern Eatery originated in Louisiana. I had the pleasure of having dinner at this wonderful "restaurant" in Louisiana. I would consider the restaurant fairly large with lots of tables and waitresses. The southern hospitality from the waitresses to the chef was excellent. I even asked if a Sam's Southern Eatery could be located in Oklahoma. The staff in formed me that there were three in Texas and one coming to Oklahoma, I was thrilled. Hold everything, it is not the same! First, Sam's in Tulsa is more like a drive-by very small fast food chain. There isn't any Southern hospitality or even nice people working there. All of the tables and floor were dirty and the girl at the register (HATEFUL) taking my order was more worried about needing a cigarette break! than the customers waiting in a long line. I was completely disgusted with what could have been a great restaurant is now a fast food chain. As for something positive, the food was fried. Will we go back?only if it is to Shreveport, Louisiana.

Ate at this location first time today and it was just as good as the others!!!! The food is excellent but this location looks horrible from the outside! Don't judge this book by the cover it was great and the service was awesome. I repeat don't let the outside appearance keep you from eating here.

Now, I'm taking into account that it was my first visit, and, thus far, I've only had opportunity to try the one menu item (philly cheesesteak), but, if everything else lives up to that sandwich, I may have to increase that rating.
That was yesterday, and, I'm trying to decide what, if anything different, I'm going to try tomorrow!

You go here for the food and not the surroundings. They offer Catfish, Chicken, Shrimp, Oysters mainly fried or grilled along with Southern sides like Red Beans & Rice, Okra, Mac & Cheese, Green Beans, etc... The food is prepared and spiced well and is good tasting to the palate.

The sign by the register about not paying their employees a livable wage is a nice touch. Had the fish and chicken, it was pretty good and was a lot of food. 8/10 would go again

Alabama Foodie. I saw this place and my heart smiled. I drove into the parking lot and entered the building, impressed with the staff,I chose to dine in. The food was absolutely delicious so much that I have been 6 times in 8 days. Thank you for the great food. Grilled Catfish #1

Good Food!!!!. I went here yesterday for the first time and I can say I was impressed. Not only was my food cooked to order and piping hot, but it was good. I try to eat catfish anywhere I can get it and there's did not disappoint. I also liked their jumbo shrimp and red beans and rice. The staff was courteous and helpful. They even came out personally and told me that they were out of okra (came a little before 8:30). The price was also good. You just can't find good food at a good price anymore and this was a place I will definitely be back to.

Loyal customer. Everything that i have eaten, i have loved

Shrimp Salad was great. If you're looking for something lighter and not fried, the garden salad with grilled shrimp is healthy and delicious!

Good Food, Good Prices. I eat there regularly. You have to adjust your expectations a bit if you are expecting gourmet sea food. That's not what this place is about. It is a casual dining, cut above fast food, Louisiana themed restaurant. The food is consistently good, the servings are generous and the prices are reasonable. My wife's favorite is the oyster po boy. I like the chicken philly, the chicken tender combo and the fish combo. I take it with a grain of salt when they tell me that they are out of shrimp or oysters, which does happen occasionally. That means that (1) they are selling a lot of them and (2) they are reasonably fresh.

Amazing catfish, shrimp were great, service was friendly and prompt. Portions were HUGE, if you leave hungry it's your fault.

Always out. I have tried two different times to get gumbo at the 11th st location both times they had none i guess they have a quart & when it's gone they are out for the next 8 hours if your selling that much that your out maybe you should make more till you quit running out at noon!

Oysters & Shrimp. Dropped in for dinner Saturday evening. I had fried oysters, friend had fried shrimp. She had cole slaw and french fries with her meal; I had okra and fries with the oysters.

A lot of disorganization. My meal came in a bag, while my friend's came in a basket. My friend's shrimp were big and they were great. A+, Sam's on that one.

My very large oysters were ... pretty dreadful. PLEASE squeeze them before breading, or if you're buying them frozen and pre-breaded (didn't seem like it), change brands. There was so much green goo in these fat oysters that they were virtually inedible. Scoot up to White River: they cut theirs so the goo will rinse out and then bread and fry. Much better result and I'm sure they'd be happy to share technique.

Fries were limp, but can't fault Sam's on that. Fries are limp most places in town. My okra was pretty blah; friend didn't comment on her slaw. But the shrimp were EXCELLENT.

Teensy little plastic cups for water. I asked for two, because they were tiny and I use a cane to walk. Was told I'd have to PAY for another teensy little plastic cup. Seriously?? Asked for tartar sauce. Had eight huge fat oysters I didn't know I'd not be able to eat. Wanted two small cups of tartar. Was told they're $.50, although the waitress gave them to us because she wanted to be nice. That sauce was more of a remoulade concoction, lacking the TART in the tartar that's so good with fried fish.

My friend will go back for the shrimp. I don't know. Maybe they'll get the place running and organized in a couple of months. Seems like they'd have waited to open until that was the case. But please get the green ickiness out of the oysters. It's just nasty to bite into that and have it ooze out of the oyster and onto the plate.

Not impressed with FAKE catfish. Had lunch here today. Place was fairly busy. Long line, barely moved, the cashier said it was her first shift, didn't know the system. We ordered the 2 pc Fried Catfish, mac n cheese, coleslaw, red beans and rice and added a chicken wing.

The mac n cheese was disgusting, just powdered cheese mix. The red beans and rice were decent, they used brown beans. The coleslaw was store bought, tasted like Long John's. The chicken wing was very good, and the house made hushpuppies were good.

Now to the "Fried Catfish"...On the first bite my Dad and I knew this wasn't catfish. I asked the waitress if we got the tilapia by mistake she said "We don't use catfish, we use Swai fish. The only catfish we have is the WHOLE fish (head tail bones)" The breading and seasoning was good but I don't like being deceived. Swai is native to Vietnam and is IMPORTED. Why they don't buy American farmed Catfish for their filets I have NO idea. The manager said yes it is Swai fish, and she had no clue why they buy that, and that I was supposed to be told that when I ordered.

Overall, I won't be going back. I can get REAL Southern Fried catfish from Sweet Lisa's, A-Bears on Greenwood or the placew out by the airport.

BA restaurant. We felt like most of the food was good. I have to agree with several of the reviews. We came in before the BIG crowed did and glad we did. The wait staff was very disorganized. Several people waited a long time to get menus, drink and for sure food. I will try the store on 11th st. next time. The oysters were nasty!

This is for new Broken Arrow Store. First things first, I'm the realest... Sorry, got Iggy on the brain... Re-start... First things first, the food is excellent! Have nothing bad to say about food. Everyrhing else... not so much... I know this store has only been open a couple days, but it is an un-organized mess. The only one that seems to know what is going on is a waitress that is sickly nice to customers, and overly mean to other wait staff in front of the customers. I have no doubt this is growing pains, but frustrating none the less. We'll be back, but not for a few weeks of growing time.

What happened to the review I posted earlier?. I guess this restaurant only keeps the posts up that make them sound good! I guess I can't blame them! I'll just post it some where where they are unable to remove it! I did call the restaurant to complain about the disgusting fried oysters (pictured above) I had earlier and they did try to compensate me by offering me another order of oysters plus 3 more free! I paid for the nastiness the first time so NO THANKS to free nastiness plus 3!

2 against 1. We're a table divided here. I personally didn't think it was very good at all, but the 2 guys I'm with liked it quite a bit. I had the fried fish and shrimp platter. They had the shrimp po'boys, one fried and the other grilled. My food was frozen fishy-tasting. The grilled shrimp had better flavor. Not planning to go back.

Mixed bag. Fried Shrimp was great. Fish was good, but batter was much too salty for my tastes. Red beans and rice was much better than most (but nowhere even close to LaSalles). Portions were huge, staff was friendly. Not much atmosphere

Excuse me while I go take a nap now..... Good food, huge shrimp, gigantic portions, friendly staff. I ordered the Number 35 fried, and my fiance ordered the Number 36 fried. Honestly, we could have split one of the meals we ordered and still had left-overs. I will definitely go back to try their other menu items. I am particularly interested in the fried green tomatoes and the grilled Tilapia Platter!

Bless your heart. This is a chain seafood /casual dining place that specializes in quick fish & Southern comfort foods (Po'Boy sandwiches, fried or grilled jumbo shrimp, red beans & rice, etc.
With a couple of minor changes to their menu, this place could be a lunch staple for about half of the Mid-Tulsa workforce. The fish is well cooked and not fishy, because it's fresh, and the shrimp is great either grilled or fried,
Service is overly attentive, but they are new and trying to make an impression, so no big deal. I'll go back often for a grilled shrimp Po'Boy (hey need to make the onion rings and hushpuppys sides and not just appetizer size orders),

Sam's is a Shreveport based chain that specializes in New Orleans style food like oyster poor boys, fried shrimp, etc. The menu choices are an extremely welcome addition to our neighborhood. New Orleans style food at a reasonable price has been missing for a long, long time...
