The food was great. We got to sit at the counter and watch the chefs prepare the meals. The fish is very very fresh, it was the perfect meal. The itamae was pretty personable. Definitely would recommend this place and we would definitely go back
My husband and I used to live in Japan �. The Toro has been the best we've had since being back in the states. We also tried the Sam O Jung Roll and the TT roll, which were very tasty, as well as the hamachi, salmon, scallops and octopus sushi. The sushi was generous in size for their price.
The service was wonderful and the staff, friendly. It was a over all excellent experience. If you are looking for tender, melt in your mouth sushi, Matoi Sushi � is the place to go!!

Bulgogi, sushi, unagi, it was all amazing. The service was impeccable even though we arrived very late! Will recommend to anyone and definitely will be going again.

Matoi is very good sushi and the sushi bar Personnel are very friendly. We are regulars and have been going there for about 11 years now. I take my friends over to eat sushi at least once a month and then enjoy all the Delicacies.

Busy Place. Matoi Sushi was recommended to us by a friend who knows we love sushi. When we pulled in there was NO parking, sucks for some but to us that’s a good sign. We stood in the door way for a small eternity but that’s ok. I did feel bad for some people there as they were in a large party and there are only a few tables that can handle a larger size. Thankfully it was just the two of us so we didn’t have to wait as long as some did. The sushi was good and large in size. I think sushi is one of those things that everyone has their own opinion on “it’s the best sushi in town”, this was not MY best in town but it was very good. We shall keep trying all the recommendations we get even if I have found “the one”.
Best Sushi in Town. This place is by far the best sushi in Tampa. This place is always packed and for good reason. Sam and Steve put their all into making beautiful and delicious food. I personally am a HUGE fan of Korean food and it makes dinning options even better. We've dined here three times in about one month and we absolutely will not go any where else. GREAT FOOD/Meh service. Yeah, ok we get it, the service is subpar. But the food! Oh, the food. If you are very critical of waitstaff and feel you deserve to be treated like a queen of a small country then this is not the place for you. I went with a few friends and the veteran server was very straightforward, "What do you want?" If you have a question regarding menu details, they will answer it (gladly answer? not so sure). These waitresses have like a gazillion tables simultaneously and were probably double or triple sat, so I can see the hustle and bustle in the expressions.
My soft shell crab was perfection, my kal-bi rib dish arrived loudly sizzling on a cast iron pan, and the salmon crunch roll was not stingy on the salmon.
Bangkok roll was fresh and tasty. Chicken fried rice was rubbery and bland...come for the tempura, sushi, and korean ribs.

Had a great experience here about a week ago. Ordered one of the raw sushi rolls for my mom, aunt and myself to share, and we were not disappointed!! The fish was fresh and the rice was perfect!! My aunt had a chicken and rice dish which was simple yet flavorful and my mother and I got a clay pot noodle dish that came with excellent kimchi (one of the best I have had) and other side dishes. The server also brought a sort of sweet and spicy red hot sauce that made the dish even more wonderful!! I would recommend thus place to anyone looking for fresh sushi and amazing Korean dishes, you will be delighted! :3
Loved sitting at The sushi bar! We are new to the area and So we didn't know what to expect. Everything was phenomenal and everything was fresh. The sushi chefs are awesome and we can't wait to come back. This is our new sushi place!
Fresh sushi and a great chef!. Some of the best sushi I've ever had, with great service and with good prices. I've regularly payed more money for sushi no where near as good as this, and at restaurants that weren't nearly as enjoyable.
I'm visiting from out of town and had Matoi recommended to me. As is always a good idea at a sushi place, I sat at the bar and chatted with the sushi chef. Sam was VERY friendly and very talented. He took great care of me, recommended some great food and kept me company.
The sushi is fresh, tasty and reasonably priced for the quality. You can't beat it! I will be coming back to see Sam any time I'm in the area.
Wow! Tried at the Urban Spoon rating and so glad we did. Great atmosphere, impeccable service and great sushi. Got the Bucs and Suzan rolls really fresh with great flavors. We will be back!!

Best quality sushi in Tampa. Fish is always fresh and service is always great. This is one of the few Tampa sushi restaurants that consistently has uni available and it's best uni around.
Outstanding service! I called about half an hour before I got there, and as soon as I arrived the guy knew who I was. I asked about there wine, whixh he presented me with. And had a corner both for me and my date. Real personable service. I felt like Ray Liotta in the Goodfellas scene when he walked into the restuarant. Food was delicious as well. Made the top of my favorites list.
Phenomenal. Dinner this evening ranks up there among my top three sushi experiences. Quality of the food was absolutely stunning. Impeccably fresh. Delicately, expertly prepared. Tampa should have no trouble supplying restaurants with the best seafood, and Matoi does a great job of showcasing it. I sat at the sushi bar, which to me is a must (unless you're with a large group) because let's face it, you rarely get a chance to know the people who will be preparing your meal. This is a family operation that takes an incredible amount of pride in what they do, and clearly could not be happier doing it. Everyone made me feel like part of the family. Other reviewers have said "stop by if you're in the area" - forget that. Make the trip on purpose from wherever you are.

Very yummy! The New Tampa sushi roll was outstanding! They refilled my green tea without having to ask, which seems to be rare for some unknown reason. The bulgogi pot had good flavor and the T.W.T sushi roll was so fresh and the sauce to go with it was really good too! Good decor. The only thing that was off was the bathroom needed a quick tidying up. Overall really great place!

Favorite Sushi. This is our favorite spot for fresh sushi. We usually always go for the specialty rolls. Very imaginative and flavorful. My fiance loves the Korean dishes too. Anytime someone is new in town and asks where to go for sushi, this is the first place I recommend.
Best sushi in Tampa!. I went to Matoi about 90% of the time that I went out for sushi, and it was my first recommendation of where to go for great sushi in Tampa. The staff couldnt be any friendlier, and the sushi chefs presented behind an open sushi bar with all of the fish on display.
My favorite has to be their spicy tuna. I always got a couple rolls. Actually, I don't think I ever had a bad roll there. Well, maybe the sea urchin, but thats another story.
If you are visiting, or just live in Tampa, its a no brainer. Everything is great and very reasonable pricing.
Matoi Sushi best in town..... Friendly and prompt service. A must try when in Tampa area. We were delighted with everything about Matoi Sushi. They aim to please all patrons, for instance, two people in our party can not tolerate imitation crab meat, so Matoi was able to substitute the imitation crab for real crab in our selected sushi rolls for the evening. Everything was fresh, fresh, fresh...
If you get a chance, also try their special sushi grouper roll called 'Tampa Roll" -delicious!
By far the best sushi chefs in 200 miles. Always fast and expertly crafted sushi. My only complaint is that they always seem to be out of toro... ;.;

Matoi serves some of the best sushi I've ever had (and I've had ALOT of sushi) for an unbeatable value. If you have the opportunity don't pass on this place. p.s. Try the T.W.T. Best volcano roll in the area. It's unlike what you are used to seeing; this roll has an assortment if flavors (I believe it has salmon, shrimp, daikon radish and cream cheese). The entire roll is tempura fried and served drizzled with spicy mayo. Any other roll I've had is really fresh, and just as delicious. I haven't tried any of the Korean cuisine, but I hear it's good. The experience is very casual and family friendly.
Simply the Best. Just got into Tampa from Kansas City and heard about this place through the web. I'm glad I did my research as this place was hands down one of the BEST sushi places I've ever been to. They had very good rolls, and the most amazing cuts of Salmon and Tuna...I'm still drooling about them. If you're in Tampa, and you're in the mood for Sushi...You've got to go here. The owner and staff went out of their way to make sure that we were taken care of...even gave us a little extra "Off Menu" to make the trip a great one. We'll be here in Tampa for about 5 days and I think we'll go back 1-2 more times! Fantastic!!!!!
Satisfying Sushi. I haunt this place weekly. Not only are the prices great, but the food is so satisfying. The dynamite scallops are in fact... dynamite. I always stick to the sushi, but I hear the regular menu items are delectable as well.
Think of it as a sushi diner and it is sure to win your heart.

Good sushi, next time I'll order Korean food. I had read that this restaurant used to have another name that was more Korean, before being named Matoi Sushi. This name change may have been the result to capture more customers who are looking for sushi under a Japanese restaurant category. However, I actually prefer sushi as prepared in Korean restaurants -- an orientation developed when visiting New Jersey (Palisades Park, in particular) -- as compared to the more "polite" flavour in Japanese establishments.
On the suggestion of the waitress, I ordered the daily soup -- which happened to be a chicken broth with mushrooms -- instead of miso. She said that if I didn't like it, she would replace it. The soup did have good flavour, with some interesting crunchy textures in it.
I ordered the large (10 piece) sushi order. I should have remembered that one of the reasons that I prefer Korean restaurants is that they seem to provide larger pieces of fish than Japanese restaurants. The fish was fresh, with a few pieces (yellowtail, if I recall correctly) being especially fresh. I liked the scallops.
I had also ordered a seaweed salad, which the waitress didn't catch, so the fish was delivered first. She immediately brought the seaweed salad, which was fine, as I ate the two together.
The restaurant has lots of booths, and is suitable for a business dinner or a romantic dinner. Since there's a full Korean menu (e.g. galbi, bulgogi, jap chae), this is a restaurant that I could visit multiple times on a business trip, and not run out of choices.
Next time I go, though, I'll have to remember to order the small (8 piece) order of sushi. Even without dessert, I found the large portion filling.
We ate here many times and it was always consistently delicious food and services. Nice and friendly staffs. Great sushi, delicious Korean food. Love the happy hours from 4-7pm when you can get buy 1 get 1 beer or house wines.

Very good sushi at reasonable prices. 2 for 1 drinks for Happy Hour (4-6) during weekdays. Decent enough service when we were there on a busy Friday. We plan to return to try more of their specialty rolls.
At first, I was very skeptical about how this place would be mainly because of the way the building looked from the outside (plain). However, I was blown away by the decor of the restaurant once I stepped inside. You have private seating, beautiful fish tank, A well-stocked bar. But the most important aspect of this is the food. To put it bluntly, the food was amazing! You can tell the chef takes great pride and how he presents the dishes. The variety was amazing as well. You can have yourself either a Korean cuisine or awesome sushi. We tried both just so that we can bring you our honest opinion. The staff was friendly and a tentative. I definitely recommend this place. This restaurant is nothing short of outstanding.

I have come back here many times since my post 3 years ago, but I really recommend anyone that want some fresh sushi to come here! The waitress here is so motherly loving and welcoming! I spilled a little kimchi sauce on my shirt and she came and tried to remove the stain for me! They are so welcoming and their sushi is the best in Tampa! The presentation and the freshness of the sushi is just melt into your tongue! The price is reasonable for the quality of their food!
Wow. So amazing . I love there sushi i haven’t had sushi for atleast 6 months. There Mount Fuji was awesome and also there moms the bomb HIGHLY reccomended lobster roll. Cali of COURSE…oh and there Philadelphia roll. With the smoke salmon to die for!!!!!!!….. they have amazing service. Every server/ manager ive come in counter with has been extremely sweet. And extremely nice ❤️🌸 they take my order quick . Bring my drinks right away . They made me feel at home. Thank you for giving me a really good experience at MATOI SUSHI. Good koreon/ Japanese food. First time here and it’s like your mom and pop kind of ambience. Sushi 🍣 were great, and we also ordered the lychee unfiltered sake which was delicious.

This place is amazing! The ingredients are super fresh, especially the salmon. The rolls are great and you really cannot go wrong with what you end up trying. My current favorite is the Susan roll. The staff there are also incredibly nice, making the meal an enjoyable experience in every aspect. Matoi is definitely a new favorite restaurant of mine.
this is such a cozy cute place! The waitress were nice the only thing I kinda was annoyed about is how they’re always making you feel rushed. Asking if you’re read for the check but other than that they’re sweet. The food was delicious! For 2 specialty rolls, 2 appetizers and some drinks it came to a little over $40 which I thought was great
I have been going to Matoi for the last 8 yrs. Having lived in California, with the incredible sushi you have out west...the Tampa/St.Pete area can be a culture shock of bad sushi. Matoi is the best place in the Tampa area...hands down.
Even though this is a Korean restaurant, the quality of the sashimi here is above any other restaurants in the area. The place is always packed and for good reason. The gentlemen at the sushi bar are awesome as well. If you're visiting Tampa, this is the sushi spot.
Great service with a smile, and even better sushi. Try their New Tampa Roll and the Volcano Roll! The ambiance of the restaurant is so cozy, you won't regret visiting this place. From their menu, try the Korean kalbi and the udon. Delicious!
Best sushi in Tampa Bay. We had the Mt.Fugi roll, Dynamite roll & the Volcano roll. All we're fantastic. Nice quiet dining but it does get busy and loud in peek hours. Eating at 4 has worked great. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable.

It’s the feeling you get!!! Although the sake is great, the staff are always amazing as well. I don’t live close so when I’m in the area I always try a different roll and today I tried their kimchi stew (I forgot the proper name on the menu). It was my first time having the dish and my server helped me get set for success and man was it delicious. I eat kimchi at home but never knew it could made into something like this. The roll she suggested was perfect! I love it here! Definitely a dedicated customer!

Stopped in for lunch. The appetizer of baby octopus was good, but the lunch special was somewhat bland (miso type soup a bit too salty and chicken drenched in sauce). I'll give it another shot for a full dinner selection next visit.

- Miso Soup - tasty, perfectly salted and not watery
- Red Dragon Roll - HOT. I had to drink two glasses of water with this, but it was delicious.
- Heart breaker Roll - This was a pleasant surprise since I didn't think seared salmon in a roll would be good. Hands down one of the best "cooked" sushi rolls I've had
- Shrimp Fried Rice: the kids loved this dish, a very large plate so two people can easily eat this. They weren't stingy with veggies or shrimp
Ambiance: The ambiance is nice, very authentic looking, not very formal.
Service: so-so, there is a buzzer on the table to ask for the waitress, but ours wasn't working, so we had to try to get her attention several times.
The food at this place was amazing!!! My family and were visiting from Georgia. We came to this restaurant because of the great reviews. The customer service was awesome. The staff educated us on the health benefits of kimchi and the portion sizes were huge compared to what we are used to. My family and I talked about this place the remainder of the trip. I had the Krab sushi roll and LOVED IT! I highly recommend this restaurant!
I have been going here for years and I’ve never been let down. This is hands down the best sushi in Tampa. We started out with Saki bombs, the Kirin Light beer was buy one get one free. We had miso soup, ginger salad and 3 rolls. The Eel roll is my favorite. The ambiance is great. The server was sweet and attentive.
