Review La Herencia Cafe - St. Augustine

Kaye Rubio-SanGabriel
This was a cozy place along Aviles St. The food was good, we enjoyed the out door seating as well. The sandwiches we ordered were better than what we had from 2 places on St. George Street. We would not say it was the best Cuban food, but it was better than the ones we had in the area.

This place is has the best Cuban breakfast sandwich I have ever had the pleasure of sinking my teath into. The food here is so good that i have faild once again to take a picture before eating. The flavor of the food dances throughout this restaurant so you know the food is awesome. 5 stars for this place start to finish.

Escape the crowds over to peaceful Aviles Street and watch horse carriages stroll by with a glass of sangria. When I write reviews for restaurants, I usually haven't tried everything on the menu, but I do know the Fish Cuban with Curry has been consistently amazing here. The service is great, and this place is casual, pet-friendly, relaxing, not overpriced, and there's tables inside and outside. I really enjoy sitting out on the street when the weather suffices. I have lived in St. Augustine for over a decade now and as a local I really like this non-touristy, affordable option.

I think this is the only cuban restaurant in Saint Augustine. The portions are very little staff is ok. We could not eat the fish plate because it was extra super SOLTY; and it came with sweet plantains which the manu didn't specify .That was very annoying...

Unusually good food makes up for prices that are a tad high. The Cuban sandwich is one of the best and is not dry (unlike many others). The Yuca fries are incredible as are the black beans and rice. Cuban coffee is awesome too. Nice little spot to relax in the heart of the old city!

Definately a favorite for me, and probably my go-to place for a casual meal. I have never had a bad experience here, whether that be with food or service. In fact, every time I go, their genuinely kind and friendly staff really makes my day. Their location is beautiful, and I always recomend taking advantage of the outdoor seating. Their food is very good, though I've only ever ordered off of their breakfast menu. I have no idea where they get their eggs, but they taste as fresh as the eggs we used to get from a friends hens (that is to say, fantastic). I usually get the granola bowl, but also recommend the plantains.

Amazing little place. Even during the COVID-19 outbreak, they are great with the social distancing but still not a long wait time. Started the mango mimosa before the food arrived so that’s a little low, lol.

The staff were wonderful and the food was great. Get there early to ensure that the popular items are not sold out. Make sure you try the yucca fries and the cilantro vinagarette. Awesome mango mimosa. The location was terrific, just down a lovely cobbled street off the main square.

I’d describe this place as a hole in the wall. Super intimate restaurant.

We started with the chorizo and cheese platter: just as it sounds, with toast points. Yummy. The chorizo is tasty but not spicy.

My sister and I had Cubans. Very flavorful, but a little dry. She got beans and rice, I got yuca fries (serving size is exactly five yuca fries). The beans were great, same for the yuca. My wife got the pesto chicken sandwich and really enjoyed it. It came with plantains which were really tasty once salted (I’m a salty-food lover).

I enjoyed the restaurant and the ambiance. I’d return.

Presentation:Good
Service:Good
Taste:Excellent
Great little spot to sort of "get away"and catch your breath. Even though it is in the middle of historic St Augustine. Food was excellent as they were willing to make me a sandwich À la carta and it was excellent.
Decor: Good

The most delicious Cubans! Also had a sangria that was very refreshing. Didn't have a chance to try the Cuban with the sweet bread as they were sold out... Maybe next time.

Good Service/Bad Policy. The Elana Ruth sandwich with plantains was delicious. The reason I'm giving just a bad review is because my husband and I decided to share the sandwich. There was no warning on the menu nor did the server warn us that there was a two $2 sharing fee! That's outrageous! We went mid afternoon and we already ate lunch but wanted a small snack before we ate dinner later in the evening so it seemed logical just to share.

Needless to say it ruined our great experience with the food and service as most restaurants will indicate this on the menu or the server will at least tell you and there is some benefit to the customer. For instance there is a steakhouse house we frequent and there is a sharing fee however that is so the other person can get a salad and a baked potato as well. We thought this was a sneaky tactic to just make an extra $2 and expect a tip on top of that.

This was unfortunately our first and last visit. We live in the area and finally got to try this place and it was unfortunate that the manager has this policy.

Disappointed. Rude and offputting staff. Have wanted to try this place for a while so stopped by on this trip. There were a few open tables so I asked to be seated. The surly waitress, a young blonde girl, was abrupt and unfriendly, stating, "you can sit but it'll be at least 10 minutes before you're served" as she turned her back on me and walked away. Seeking clarification as to whether my girlfriend and I could sit at the open outside table from the other (short male) server resulted in a similarly cold reception and no satisfaction.

So, we went next door to Nonna's where we had friendly, welcoming service and a good meal.

Can't comment on the food since we never had the chance to try it.

Herencia will never have my business nor my recommendation. While I'm always willing to give a place another chance for many kinds of fail, one thing I'll never tolerate is rude service. Especially on my birthday.... Get your acts together.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN

For a very long time I have been salivating to get back here! Living 60 miles away is near to torture. It took me far too long to decide, but I went with their famous Media Noche (Mid Night) pressed sandwich. Yum-Awesome! With the fun and lively music and staff, this place is a mood setter and date night perfect fit.
Highly recommended, great food, atmosphere haven.

The Best Cuban Sandwich and Cafe Con Leche North of Miami!!!. This place is located down a beautiful street in the Nation's Oldest City. There is outside seating if you want to appreciate the old architecture. The interior reminds me of a European cafe. The smells coming out of the kitchen are wonderful. The homemade breads, empanadas, guava pastries, pork, whatever it is, wow!!! I first had breakfast here after seeing their specialty dish "Guajiro" on television one night. This is a top 5 breakfast dish without a doubt! Cuban bread, omelet style egg, black beans, roasted pork, salsa and grated cheese on top. Move over Huevos Rancheros, this thing means business!!! The lady inside told me they get their coffee imported from South Florida, so that it has that authentic taste. Whatever they are doing, they are doing right. Oh, and that Cilantro sauce they had was serious!! I will definitely be going back for lunch....soon!!!

YES!! This is the spot for best Cuban food and service. We ordered the Guajiro and Frita...wow. I'm Puerto Rican and being that I'm pregnant I've been craving well made Hispanic food. This satisfied my craving plus more. My husband specially loved his plate, the Guajiro and the homemade lemonade was awesome.

Great Food!. My sister and I had such a fine lunch that we returned the following morning and had an equally fine breakfast. Great Cuban bread and cafe con leche.

Good Cuban sandwiches. Quick. Should have a higher rating.

I loved it! The food is great and there is lots on the menu.

If you are latin and know about food don,t come here. Bacon was microwave and plantains too. The steak has a mineral flavor. The waiter was not nice. He wanted to do everything so fast he din't listen. Dissapointed. We tried the croquetas the night before and they were good as were the empanadas. Coffee is really good. Maybe for consumers without a Latin background, it could be a good choice since they wouldn't know any better. For those like us that have eaten this food all of our lives, it falls short.

FoI'd was good, but service was awful. As an ex waiter at an upper end eatery in my college days I can let a lot slide, but waitress never came to check on us and we had to flag her down for more drinks. We were one of only two tables at the time. I mentioned that to her at the end of the meal and got a flippant remark so I called manager over. He apologized but you could see he had zero control over his server. Perhaps that's why the restaurants on either side had a wait and we decided to eat at La Herencia with all it's open tables. Our mistake. It will never happen again. Still can't help but wonder if the owner knows what's going on while he's gone.

I had the veggie Cuban, a friend had the Frida burger/Cuban, and famous gijarda (?) omelette. The food was very good but I was also disappointed with the service!! Management: CRACK DOWN on your servers or hire more! There were 3 people in the restaurant during our visit. Our table, and the table next to us, BOTH had to ASK for refills, the check, and boxes for leftovers. You all have potential, get it together!!!!!

TERRIBLE SERVICE. I don't know if I caught this place on a bad night or what, but our experience was awful. My boyfriend and I went to St. Augustine with a few friends and his two sisters (for one of his sister's bday). The restaurant we planned on eating at had a long wait so we walked around until we saw this place. Well, that was a mistake!!!!! The waitress almost completely ignored us. The sangria was terrible, and my sandwich was only so-so. But the main reason I am writing this review is because of the attitude of our server and the wait. They brought out everyone's dinners but 3 people who ordered something with steak in it. They ran out of steak and had to order something else. No refund was offered and they didn't even apologize for the inconvenience! So everyone started eating while the 3 odd men out had to sit and wait for about 45 minutes. When my boyfriend complained, they brushed him off and then went on to complain about US when they went back behind the counter! There was a big piece of lint or something in one of our foods, and the rice and beans were covered in lemon juice. It was just terrible. Do yourself a favor and DON'T EAT HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good Cuban food. We had the Roja Vieja, Frita, and the chicken cilantro wrap .... Everyone enjoyed what they ordered. Highly recommend the empanadas!!! Yummmm

We had the guajiro for breakfast. Wow! Delicious!! Strong coffee, fresh Cuban breads, winner!!

Great little place; authentic Cuban cuisine. Wow, hardly anyone is writing about the dinners, my sample of which was really good. I was in St. Augustine as a tourist, and had my eye on a Mayan place I had heard about elsewhere, but stumbled onto this place on the way. The minute I saw "Cuban" I walked in. Server was very attentive and made lots of suggestions, and the owner/chef came out and sat and talked with me about the place and about Cuba, America, and politics (he's from Miami? I think, but of Cuban descent). I had the Ropa Vieja (literally means "old clothes" in Spanish), which is shredded beef with Cuban spices, served with the ubiquitous black beans and rice, also plantains, yum! I had been wanting to try the Ropa Vieja ever since I had seen it on the menu at El Meson de Pepe in Key West. I had the Tres Leches cake afterward at the server's suggestion--to die for!! So rich I could not finish it. Portions generous all around. Sangria very very good, as was the Cuban coffee. Wish I lived there so I could go all the time!

Went here on a recommendation, as our other favorite Cuban place had closed. The food, when we finally got it was ok. We waited at least 45 minutes for our food, a salad and a sandwich. It was not busy so there was no excuse. Waiter was ok, but that's about all.
Andy
Not good. One word: yuck. Love my cuban food, but had the special of the day "caribbean pork with mango rice". Never had worse pork -- hard and rubbery. Nothing caribbean about it. I felt like I had been tourist trapped. With so many better choices in the area, this was not worth it.

If you want a really good Cuban pressed sandwich at a good price this is the place. Service good . It's one of those hole in the wall treasures. I was very very pleased and full when I left. Oh the cafe con leche is excellent .

Beautiful atmosphere and very friendly staff. The food not so great I ordered the Tropical for breakfast. The photo on the menu showed a super yummy omelette with big chunks of ham. This was not the case in my plate. I could only see slivers of ham. My husband did enjoy his meal.

Really tasty and dog-friendly too!. So glad we found this place! They welcomed us with our dog at an outdoor table. Cutest Cuban bistro with ultra friendly service! Had ceviche, the seasoned tomatoes with garlic bread, the chorizo and cheese platter, and the Cuban hamburger with potato salad. Not a bad bite in the lot! My son normally doesn't care for fresh tomatoes, but he was scarfing down theirs! The ceviche wasn't fishy at all, perfectly seasoned. Everything was super fresh! Good prices too! Plan to return! :)

La herencia is a quaint Ma and Pa sort of restaurant, with a friendly home like atmosphere. The service was great and food delicious! Highly recommend the Tropical omollet! Prices aren't to bad either

Less than expected. Looks lovely...nice street...did not check reviews...just came across it while exploring town. had ceviche..was OK..but side rice was dry, hard. sangria was good to wash it all down. I don't recall what husband had..but he was not excited about it. .I would not return..or recommend.

Best Sangria!!!. Great spot for breakfast or my favorite reason to come....the sangria! Just moved here a year ago and one of my favorite spots. The owners are lovely and great people!

Not all that. After seeing this place hyped on a PBS special, I decided to give it a try on my next visit to S Augustine. Arriving for lunch with a friend we ordered the Cuban sandwich. I'm not a Cuban cuisine expert but aside from the bread, the sandwich seemed pretty ordinary. When I asked the waitress to split the check, she seemed confused and began telling me what a hassle that would put her through. Really? Splitting a check?

A second visit, again for lunch and ordered a cup of black beans & rice and an avocado & chicken salad. Again, just OK and took over15 minutes to get my order and even longer for the waitress to come back by my table so I could request my check. The place was not that busy, but, in her defense, she was the only one waiting tables while the owners or managers (?) stood up front just watching.

La Herencia does not seem like a happy place. The waitress was stressed & seemed to have a contentious relationship with the kitchen. Owner/Manager (?) seemed oblivious to what was happening around him.

There are too many great restaurants in St Augustine to put up with bad service & mediocre food. Will avoid this place in the future.

Great. Delicious open omelette. Try it!

Microwaveable Bacon isn't Bacon. Let me start off by saying, I rarely wright bad reviews, however I feel it is my duty to make sure people are aware of the poor quality of this restaurant.

I was fooled by an 85% "like it" rating and decided to give it a try, first I noticed that the restaurant smelled really bad, so we asked to move outside, beautiful setting. So ordered an omelet with a side of bacon and a quad Americano.

The omelet was cool to the touch, unseasoned egg, large chunks of semi raw red onion, and HUGE chunks of ham. Talking a look at that I decided to move on to my bacon, it was MICROWAVEABLE bacon, at a restaurant, REALLY? On to my Americano, I ordered it straight up, and it came with so much sugar in it, it was HORRIBLE.

So to end, Love the setting of the outdoor seating, but the food is far lower quality then McDonald's, and thats REALLY SAD!

Fantastic Evening. What fantastic evening. Had dinner outside. Everything was perfect. The food was excellent and
At a fair price. You need to get the Sangria, They put there on little touch to it fabulous. Will be going back….

OK'ish. On a busy St. Augustine Sunday afternoon, we were the only indoor diners. The sidewalk tables were partially occupied.
I ordered the Picadillo which was generously portioned and true to the recipe but a liitle dry. My wife's order of Empanadas came with a tough crust and filling that indicated the empanada had sat for a while. The desserts we sampled, flan and tres leche cake, were very good but the cafe cubano and cappuccino were awful, the cubano lacked any crema and the cappuccino was luke warm and frothless.
The service from our brain damaged server was most erratic.
The prices were affordable.

Lovely Brunch. A friend and I were visiting Jacksonville and made a special trip down to St. Augustine to eat at La Herencia. We were so pleased we had made the trip! The food was delicious, as was the sangria. The waitress was friendly and helpful and the owner stopped by the table before we left. The roasted pork pressed sandwich with mojo sauce was amazing as was the cilantro dressing on the salad. I wished we lived closer!

Great breakfast. The guarjiro open face omelet is delicious and unusual. Breakfast burrito was great. Friendly family-run.

Believe the Hype!. La Herencia Cafe was chosen to be on a PBS National Breakfast Special highlighting the best breakfasts in the United States and it's no wonder! This place is charming, food wonderful, and great staff. Will be going back again and again!

Breakfast served all day. This a great little out of the way breakfast and lunch place. Don't go for breakfast too early, they don't open until 9:00. Great food. Very good service. They are open only 2 nights a week for dinner but if you pick the right night you might get a free Latin dance lesson.

Their cheese flan is AWESOME!!
Simply St. Augustine
Opa!! Everyone on the St. Augustine food tour joined our server in calling out the traditional Greek cheer as a flaming Saganaki appetizer arrived. What a beginning to my tour of St. Augustine’s restaurants! That afternoon, I tasted the cultural flavor of St. Augustine. I met Mia on a humid summer afternoon. We’d emailed back and forth so I felt like I was greeting an old friend instead of meeting my tour guide. She easily introduced me to the other guests and offered cold water as we waited for everyone to arrive. She hinted that we’d be dining in 4 restaurants with additional surprise stops along the way. Our first was Athena Restaurant . Mia had already arranged for this Greek family restaurant to serve us a sampling of their best foods and as we waited, she detailed the history of when, how and why Greeks arrived in St. Augustine. I love the way she wove history throughout our tour- lots of interesting facts but always leaving me hungry for more. It’s tradition
