Review The Kort-haus Tavern - Seattle

If you want upscale or pretentious, look elsewhere. The exotic meat burgers are a big draw (think ostrich, antelope, alligator, kangaroo, and many others...), but there are some good veggie choices as well. Ed's Kort-Haus is just a great place to meet up with friends, play a few games of pool and listen to some tunes... in a friendly, laid-back atmosphere. A small deck out back offers shelter, and even heat in the winter. Ed is a very personable guy who cares about his customers.

Had a great experience last night visiting Ed's Kort Haus with my hubby :) It's a laid back atmosphere, free pool, a few old school arcade games scattered and most importantly good food and good booze. The patio out back is cozy and makes it easy to sneak out for a smoke without feeling like your table is going to get snatched up inside. The food was amazing - we were craving a good snack with our beer and we were offered some fries/gravy/melted cheese and it was AWESOME! We were down to play some darts and games (cost quarters and some debit cards!) and were dreading having to ask for quarters from the till, but we looked to our left and a quarter machine was there wooo. When it refused our $5 bill the bartender swooped over with five $1 bills like magic. Would definitely go back and would recommend this place if you are more into a laid back environment. Can't wait to visit this place again!

I feel like not a lot of people know about this place or it's not hip or something because every time I have been there it is pretty dead. It's great though. Pool tables, darts, pinball games etc and the weirdest good menu I have ever seen. Think "Python on a stick" because that is an actual food choice. The owner is super nice if not outwardly jovial or anything.

By exotic meat Ed means he took care of the rat problem by serving it in your burger. This was the pinnacle of dive bars. The food inspired spontaneous bulimia, the beer was warm, half foam and somehow still flat. I had to peel my arms off the bar and the bathroom was halfway between fetid latrine and pit of despair. pool was free and the ladies room was surprisingly un-attrocious. Ate there about an hour ago and will be VERY surprised if I don't get food poisening, ..and Hepatitis just from from talking to Ed. Do not eat the food, in fact do yourself a favor and don't order anything. Just support your local economy by taping $100 to a brick and throw it through his window..

The Best Place For Cheap "Bar-Ass Hotdogs" Well, every good thing comes to an end, I guess. This New Year's Eve will be Ed's last, as the Kort Haus is demolished to make way for "micro-housing" (overpriced techie prison cells that are ruining Seattle). Ed's is one of the last bastions of Old Seattle; working-class, laid back, no-nonsense, and affordable. The beers are cheap, the seats are worn, the food hits the spot and is totally unpretentious and more than fair for the price. Much to my own embarrassment, knowing that Ed had a reputation for meats, I once asked if his hotdogs were "natural casing or just regular hotdogs"; to which Ed replied, quite frankly and unimpressed: "Bar-ass hotdogs!" Naturally, I had to ask about the chips. "Are they Kettle chips or just Lays?" "Bulk puh-tay-tuh chips!" My buddy laughed at me and remarked, "Ed reminds me of my dad." We ended up going back every weekend for a while. Each time, we made wagers as to whether Ed would ever warm up to us after my faux pas. Eventually, Ed did warm up to us. He started to have us sample some of his poutine, which he was quite proud of; he told us about how much he loves his daughter and his regular customers over the years. A place like Ed's is something you don't miss until it's gone. But once your neighborhood loses it, you'll be hard pressed to have something like it again. Thanks for all of the late night hotdogs and laughs, Ed! We'll miss you!

It's a dive bar with great service, Do not expect duche bag uber hipster decor. They take pride in there food. Where else can I go to get a delicious Camel burger Med well.... Great beer selections to boot.

Service is good. Food's alright, but...BUT...they have a bevy of exotic meat burgers, so they get extra credit since I can't exactly go to McDonald's to get my elk fix.

Extremely divey, decent food with crazy selection of exotic meat, but not very clean

Put the 'D' in Dive. This bar seems like an anomaly in Phinney Ridge. I always feel a bit weird when I walk in, like everyone's head turns to size up whoever walks through the door. It's a young crowd, a bit of a fratty vibe for sure. Wouldn't think to order food here, but I guess people do... Pool tables, darts, shooting games, oh and definitely a couple good beers on tap. Not really my scene but maybe it's yours?

Love this place... I have wanted to get to Ed's Kort Haus in forever and for some weird reason only just made it the other night. I have lived here 14 years and sincerely regret not making it sooner.

Ed is an utter sweetheart of a man, and the 'Exotics' menu is awesome. Elk, antelope, camel, alligator, caribou, reindeer, kangaroo, ostrich, to name a few. I ate the kangaroo burger, it was very, very good. I plan on eating my way through the menu.

Oh, and they have 2 FREE POOL tables!! What's not to absolutely LOVE about this place. I have a new favourite. Thanks for a great night Ed!! :)

It is not a swanky place, not your typical Maria Hines or Ethan Stowell Seattle-snobfest. (which I also like to visit, not knocking that..) This is a genuine Seattle old-school 'bar'. Ed's is what is delightful about these old Seattle bars, and I love the place..

I can't wait to go back. A friend and I were headed to the Stumbling Goat, which is right next door to the Kort Haus. It was closed for a private party, and I'm glad it was! This place has exotic meat burgers. I had kangaroo and my friend had venison. They had a whole selection of different meats- elk, reindeer, kangaroo, lamb and lots more I can't remember. It was delicious and the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful!
