Great Pub Food. Maybe this place dates back to the 19th century, or earliest 20th century. There's some dispute about that, which made for interesting reading while waiting for the food to come. But it feels pretty damn classic, and if they can keep serving up awesome Monte Cristo sandwiches and tots like that they can claim to have been founded in 1492.
This has been another great local spot for me for years. I've seen some things change here over the years but the quality of their food continues to rule. I've taken several people to eat here who didn't expect to enjoy it as much as they did. Of course the chicken fried steak is better than any others I can think of but their other menu items are just as good and you can get tots. They also have games like ping pong, air hockey, pin ball, and others in the back if you're looking to stay for a while.
I love Jules Maes!. My husband and I have been having dinner dates there now every Tuesday for two months. It is still our favorite spot in Seattle. It's like your favorite sweater. The service is great. The food has never disappointed. It is like being transported back in time to when we where first dating. When all we wanted was a beer and a burger. The whiskey bacon burger is the best with tots and a manny's. Love Jules Maes!
I was prepared to be disappointed with Jules Maes Saloon.... But disappointment didn't happen!!!
We arrived at about 11:30 a.m. on a Saturday for lunch. They serve breakfast, too. The menu has very few items but the food is very good.
Booths, large tables and seating at the bar are avalable.
The service was great, the food was great and the atmosphere of the place should evoke the visiting diner to think of all the history that Jules Maes has seen in its over 100 year lifetime.
When you walk in to Jules Maes you will not be impressed, but don't let this stop you. Old yellow wallpaper, stuffed deer heads on the walls. Its old, which I guess, makes it hip.
I think the owners should replace the regular doors with a set of swinging doors like the saloons you see in the old western movies. The floors are concrete and there is a slightly "musty/aged" smell in Jules Maes which is to be expected.
If you want some entertainment there is a room in the back where there is a pool table, an air hockey table, an ping pong table and four pinball machines. In another small room, not so far back from the front entrance, there are some bigger tables for larger groups.
For those who need it, there is a breath analyzer so you can test your blood alcohol level (which I assume is in working order and will cost you 25 cents but it is better than getting a DUI).
I had the Lamb Burger w/ the tater tots and my wife had the fish and chips.
The lamb burger(it had feta, carmelized onions. tomato and lettuce on it and was on a ciabatta roll $10.25) was well seasoned and the tater tots were well cooked.
My wife had the fish and chips and thought it was one of the best fish and chips she had had in the Seattle area and the fries were good and plentiful.
Don't be alarmed by the tatooed folks at the bar.
There are other things to do in Georgetown:
1) Go to Fantagraphics books and the record store (buy something!).
2) Go to Full Throttle Bottles down the street. Not much of a selection of beer, but it is an o.k.beer/wine store.
3) HAT AND BOOTS!
4) Walk around the old Rainier Brewery building across the street and take in a little history!
The Jules Maes beer tap menu is HEAVILY skewed towards Georgetown Brewing brews/ales.
Don't go looking for help from their website either. The website hasn't been updated since 2008 and there is no menu posted if you click on the menu link.
The mens room is in good shape. You need no be afraid.
Can't go wrong.... I was told by my dining partner that his BLT was the best he has ever had.
Great pub food.. This place has great sandwiches and home made soups. A must try....very suprised on the quality of the food. Plan on coming back several more times.
Tater-Tots!. You gotta love a place that has tater-tots as an appetizer. I've been to Jules Maes about 5 times now and I have not been disappointed once. I love tater-tots and Jules Maes' tots are by far the best I've had in Seattle. They fry 'em up perfect! Crunchy and golden brown. Their lamb burger is great too. Of course I get it with a side of tots instead of the fries. The fish and chips are great too, although I prefer the tots over the chips. I look forward to going back to Jules Maes to try more of their menu selection and you can guarantee that whatever I'll be choosing will have some golden brown tots on the side.
Not only does Jules Maes have great food, but it is also a great place to hang out with friends for some drinks. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is laid-back and comfortable. Jules Maes is one of my new favorite places in Seattle.
This Georgetown classic is a keeper. Delicious bacon wrapped prawns in Georgetown? This is just some of the surprising dinner fair provided at Jules Maes Saloon. My dad would have been amazed to see this when he and my uncles practically lived in this warm, classic old working class bar in Georgetown from the 40's through the 70's. Long gone are those two fisted days, but the place is still steeped in the history, respect and ambiance of the average hard working stiff - and it's great. (Note, for history majors, a Georgetown/Beacon Hill native never called it "Jules Maes", it was always refered to as "Julie Maes"). The food is possibly the best in Georgetown for selection, and the quality ain't too bad either. The "saloon" cooks somehow actually take their job here seriously and, SURPRISE, the food shows it. The house and the chow has the integrity of the old generation. Whether the standard hamburger to the solid pasta dishes and other nonstandard tavern type food, it's good stuff for a fair price. Ya, regular bar stuff is there too. A true bar with real honest to god decent dinners (and lunch) . Generally the staff is fine, but we once had a waitress during lunch that was a real jerk, it happens. The wait staff is inconsistant - either great or a bad attitude. Real eclectic mix of patrons there, which we love. All ages blend well from long time local neighbors & factory workers, pilot or two from Boeing Field, a few "office" workers and a fair number of newer artist/music types that looked to have migrated from the "old" Belltown/Fremont scene. From 21 to 80 years old, you'll be comfortable and that's rare in this day of severe age segregation. About 10:00pm it starts to morph more into younger and hip hardcore music crowd, but it's OK, stick around, I found they're friendly to all if you feel like hanging out into the wee hours, even a 50+ year old geezer like me, they didn't care and accepted us without blinking. Hat's off to the owners who made good food, good patrons, and a place that respects the past of Georgetown - dad and his gang would be happy! God, please don't yuppify or go the other way and be too pretententiosly hip, it's well balanced now and we need more of that - it's honest! Be sure to check out the classic old pictures and duck your head when the planes go over. (Updated 11/10/10)
Brett took exceptionally good care of us! The head chef obviously knows what she is doing as the wings were perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside moist on the inside & the burger was fabulous! The tots were the perfect vessels to enjoy the different dips they offer, in our case the house made BBQ & the Chipotle BBQ! Great flavours combined with a great lunch in a funky space, we MUST return! Thanks again Brett for taking care of us.
Initially went here as it's the oldest bar in Seattle. Happy Hour $1 off drafts & well drinks but gin or vodka martinis for $6.50(half price) We'd never had one & I have friends who love them so we did it. Great atmosphere & very friendly staff. Sunflower hummus is good w veggies&pita, biggest mozzarella sticks you'll ever see. Came again & had special fish&chips $16, my son had fried pork chop w cabbage$18
Both great & least expensive meal
Brought the whole team in for a company event, and all 11 of us loved it. Great lunch food, steak salad is excellent, and the server has a memory like an elephant. Bartender knows his way around an old fashioned as well. I will take the team back again.
A really nice bar in Georgetown. Great selection of food and drinks. Karaoke on Sundays. Friendly staff that held onto a phone left behind. Very cool, we’ll definitely return!
Will come again to the oldest bar in Seattle. The cod tacos are good. The chicken sandwich is good too. I would order the chicken sandwich over the tacos next time. Food came pretty fast. Margarita is a bit sour but it’s good. The restaurant is chill on a weekday night. Good music.
Great kickback ambiance.. I didn't eat anything but one person at my table had tater tots and they were hot, tasty, and non greasy, which is nice. Bartender was very attentive without making me feel rushed. I would return and order food. This is a local hangout and that is what gives it it's charm.
This is a pretty rad location! They host it all! Private parties, live music, large groups, and much more!
We enjoyed drinks and food and some some live music. They have some amazing cocktail and yummy food! You should come check it out!
10/10 would recommend!
I go here often because the food is great. Never have I gone here for mozzarella sticks. The biggest I've ever had and worth every bite. Panko crusted and the marinara was so good. That would be good to share on a date night with cocktails!
Great bar and restaurant. I think it's the oldest bar is Seattle, or one of the oldest. It has fun western decor like dear heads and antlers. The back has arcade games (pinball) and a small stage.
The service was great. Friendly staff and quick. They posted signs on empty tables to indicate whether or not they'd been wiped down yet between patrons.
They had a seasonal drink menu. I tried the jack fire hot toddy which tasted like a delicious tea. It had a lemon slice garnish with anis which looked very cute. My friend tried the pumpkin stout ice cream float which was also very tasty. There was a whiskey hot chocolate that sounded interesting.
We also got poutine tots which were delicious, super cheesy and very filling.
Top notch! Food was great, great ambience in the great Jules Mae's.
