A coworker who's from Puerto Rico highly suggested this place to me after I told her that I've never been to a Puerto Rican restaurant. She told me to order the mofongo with pernil and that's exactly what I did. Excellent food, staff, drinks, and atmosphere. The walls were painted vibrant colors and decorated with lots of art. My family always makes arroz con gandules, that was the only thing that could've used more flavor and color. I'm going to have to come here again to try more from their tempting menu.
It's hard to distill the experience of the flavors I experienced, into words. If I was forced to pick just one I'd simply say: DELICIOUS. If you've never been, this place would be great for a first date. Casual atmosphere, very, very reasonably priced, and satisfying fare. Good drink selection. My wife had the "Lunch Empanadilla" special and we were both blown away by the rice and beans that came with it. These aren't like Azteca restaurant kind of rice and beans. These are perfectly cooked, uniquely spiced rice and beans that you can only get here or in Puerto Rico. Indeed, we were more impressed with them than the actual empanadilla (though it was good, as well)... That's how amazing they were. I had the Tripleta sandwich which was amazing. Hearty and cheesy, good bread, excellent sweet potato fries as an included accompaniment, and delicious garlic sauce for dipping. We'll definitely be back. So I went here because I was feeling homesick. I'm a great cook! But, there is nothing like abuela's and mami's home cooked Puertorican food!!! I went hoping it was actually going to be Puertorican food and not someone's rendition of it; or someone trying to make a version of their own. I literally ordered like 10 things lol The pork, rice and beans, alcapurrias, Bacalao, mojito, and many more things. Obviously, it will never be better than abuela's or mami's; but it was sooooo good!!!!! The rice and beans were very well flavored and not dry at all. The pork almost made me cry. So tender and succulent. The pique (Puertorican hot sauce; best ever)made the rice, beans and pork taste even better than it already was. The bacalao and alcapurrias were super fresh and sooo good. As a Puertorican who loves food and tried everything once; La Isla is a must try. If you want REAL SPANISH CARRIBEAN food this is a must try. The inside is decorated very nicely. Clean, comfortable and great music. Their rum is , of course, Don Q. One of the best rums out there! Whether you drink it alone or mixed it's great. Highly recommend La Isla!! This is where I go when I'm to tired to cook and want great food from home!
