We looked online at the menu, and I was excited to see shrimp tempura as an appetizer. We decided to eat here because of that, and they were one of the few restaurants near the Pier to offer a vegetarian entree. We got there about 6:30, and were seated right away. I looked at the menu and did not see shrimp tempura. Our waiter, Clint, said they didn't have it any more. When I told him that was the reason we chose Ma'Kai, he offered to talk to the chef, and came back to tell me he could accommodate me. He brought me a delicious plate with tempura shrimp over sauteed carrots, broccolini and asparagus, and an excellent dipping sauce. My husband had tofu over sauteed veggies. Service was excellent, food was excellent and it was a comfortable setting. With one drink and 2 desserts, our bill was under $60. Definitely recommend this restaurant and would go back in a heartbeat. Thanks Clint.

I can't believe how good the food at Ma'Kai was last night. They revamped the menu and everything we ordered was delicious. We'll be making this one of our regular spots in Santa Monica and are recommending it to everyone. If you're wondering if you should check it out, just do it. The food is amazing. No exaggeration, the fish tacos were the best we've ever had

Service and food here is excellent! Everybody is very friendly, our server Makyla went above and beyond to please us and make sure we were happy, we got there during brunch hour but we really wanted something from the menu that they didn't start serving until after but she made it happen for us! Thank you Makyla!! You are a rockstar!

Nice spot to catch a sunset; great Happy Hour specials, and — for an Austinite, this is super important — they have BREAKFAST TACOS. Michaela gave us the best service; thanks!

Great View and very agreeable prices. Not at all what I expected. The staff was extremely friendly and the menu was appealing. I will definitely be back.

This place is great! Service was outstanding. My family of 5 went there on a Sunday at 7:00 P.M. and requested a table outside. We were fine with a wait but it ended up only being about a 5 minute wait for them to clear the table. The waitress checked on our table often, another person came by with water frequently, and the food was so yummy! We had calamari, grilled chicken sandwich, sweet potato fries (AMAZING), fish & chips, kale salad, and grilled fish tacos. We all greatly enjoyed our food. Also...there isn't a better view of Ocean Ave. and the sunset! Last thing I'll say about the amazing service, when a group of four requested a table outside, the staff literally moved tables and chairs outside to accommodate them. Who does that?! Above and beyond. Highly recommend!

Awesome menu with variety of options we were in the mood for (tacos & sushi). The service was quick but food came out a little cold, though it was still appetizing. House margarita was great and the view of the beach gave a relaxing atmosphere with the outside dining. Comparable prices to other restaurants in Ocean Ave.

So I used to come here years ago and the placed seemed a bit more upscale. Returning years later, I find out its under new ownership. Well, there's definitely more space to dance around. More of mini club given that you have seats out of the dance floor. Not sure about the food but drinks are okay. Pretty generic. Bartenders are accommodating when their not putting on their stunner shades. lol

Food and atmosphere was fantastic. The place is not to far from the Santa Monica Pier. We ordered the Dragon Roll , Garlic shrimp & jasmine rice and the fish tacos. The roll and garlic shrimp/jasmine rice was delicious. The fish taco however be warned it has a strong fish order like it literally smelt fresh out of the sea. Maybe we had a bad batch but I wouldn't recommend it

Great Sunday brunch. Good food and value for money - the mimosas were bottomless, in fact they never went below half full. Lovely and friendly staff who were also happy to assist with a channel change on request. I will be returning on my next trip
