Review Quan Hue Restaurant - San Jose

Christina Dang
Nostalgia hit me hard today so I decided to relive my childhood eating in this plaza and from this decades old restaurant. Expecting only good food, who knew I'd be blown away by the owner of this restaurant. She took care of us - really, truly. As my friends and I were discussing what to order, she willingly jumped in to help us refine our choices. Also, when I mentioned that one of my friends was gluten-free, she went out of her way to confirm her vermicelli noodles had no gluten by sharing the actual product she used so we can verify the ingredients ourselves. The cherry on the top was her honesty. With our stomachs bigger than our eyes, we ordered several items for just the 3 of us. She literally stopped us in our tracks and said that's too much and so, we removed an entree thanks to her recommendation. And she was right. If we had that additional dish, it would've pushed us over the edge. We managed to finish exactly what we had to end up feeling perfectly content. Impeccable customer service aside, we very, very much enjoyed everything we ate. We particularly liked the banh uot thit nuong - no surprise it's one of her most popular and top dishes. She herself expressed her pride about the dish. We also ordered com tam with the works. It turns out the fried chicken is gluten-free since it's made with tapioca flour (my partner was delighted). I would also go out of my way for her banh bot loc because it tasted fresh and not reheated like other Hue restaurants in the area. I did wish her banh khot was crispier but that's a personal preference. And the bun cha nem nuong was good bang for the buck. I could go on. Like we also loved the tea - a lovely finishing touch to a hearty meal. Anyways, we'll have to come back for the banh xeo since she bent over the counter just to get our attention while at our table and told us we should try this dish next šŸ˜‚

My wife and I both love this place. Everything they made is delicious, they have been opened for 32 years and the food is so authentic. Not only the snacks people are sharing through photos but also the broken rice. Their fried chicken and eggs cakes are also fantastic!

This is a favorite meal to share. The appetizers and soup from Hue, central Viet Nam. I usually order banh xeo, crispy crepe-like outer layer with shrimp, pork and bean sprouts, wrapped with lettuce mint and cilantro. It also includes other produce whose names escape me. This time I requested banh khot. Similar to banh xeo but chewy center and crispy edges. The cook's specialty. Tasty and full of texture especially wrapped with produce. Service is friendly.

I'm always happy about new spots opening up! I can't wait to try Hon's Wun-tun House #2 (SF) in the former Washington Bakery spot! But, I'm also sad that many places can't make it due to not being able to hire staff, rising food costs, or just owners retiringšŸ˜” I love it when places have been around for long time and continue to strive to the purpose of making people happy through food. Quan Hue (SJ) has been around for over 2 decades. Love all the dishes and snacks made here but I'm here for the Banh Uot Thit Nuong (bbq pork w/ rice cake) and the BĆ”nh khį»t (Vietnamese mini pancakes or mooncakes). "Mama" told me her rice cake is the best in all of San Jose! It's very delicious but I have not tried all of SJ!

In the Lion Plaza food court and always a line. I love this food court, brings back great memories of growing up. Highly recommend for big groups as thereā€™s plenty of seats indoor and outdoor as well as paying individually is easy. I always get the banh uot thit nuong (similar to spring roll but softer wrap) the sauce is delicious. I buy party trays of this and everyone always loves it. Recommend to order ahead of time because they sometimes run out. Iā€™ve tried this banh khot and banh xeo not bad but banh uot is the best!

Inside the Lion food court, great rice cake/crepe rollsā€¦ the signature is the BBQ pork and thereā€™s also a shrimp version. Good food, I think itā€™s $3 per roll so a plate is $9 (three rolls per plate). They also do catering at the same price. Great plaza for Vietnamese food because everyone can pick the dishes they want and you can share. Not a lot of tables but itā€™s covered and thereā€™s AC. Thereā€™s also dessert in the plaza too.

Not only was the foods incredibly delicious, the owner (Annie) provides the best experience to her customers! She recommended her specialities, advised us on how to best enjoy the dishes, and made sure our entire plates were presented perfectly. The Mi Quang noodles were TO DIE FOR! If I hadnā€™t ordered 4 other things, I would have eaten another bowl of these meaty, turmeric, silky noodles. The BBQ pork rolls in rice paper had the most succulent meat and an amazingly savory sauce. The banh xeo (crepe with meat and seafood) was an absolute hitā€” perfectly crispy yet light with plenty of herbs and greens. The floral jasmine tea was also a wonderful surprise. I really wish I had two stomachs and did not live an hour drive from this place. WOW AND WOW a total must try when in the South Bay!
