Yesterday we grabbed food to go from the Modern Vegan and all I could think was don’t go bacon my heart... Honestly, I was a little nervous with all the hype surrounding their food. I’m so happy to say we were not disappointed!
We The Great American burger and the Fish n Chips. The Great American had the yummiest cheese sauce and the bacon was literally perfect. I’ve never been a fan of “fishy” dishes but the fish cutlets didn’t have an overwhelming flavor and the fries that came with were the perfect compliment.
Overall, this is my favorite restaurant we’ve explored in San Diego (and Brandon’s favorite vegan food period.)
We both highly recommend!

My partner and I came to the Modern Vegan a few weeks ago and I was so surprised with how much I enjoyed their food! (I eat meat, my partner is the vegan.)
The fish n chips tasted like actual fish, I was blown away! This is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in San Diego! We'll definitely be coming back!

They're Back! Elevated Vegan Comfort Food
The Modern Vegan SD is finally back open (with safely-spaced indoor dining!) and they are better than ever! We've been anxiously awaiting their return, so we checked them out on their first day after reopening.
The menu is massive and full of so many amazing things, it would probably take fifty visits to try everything. So where to begin? We tried...
Vegan Fish Tacos - Three (hard to believe it's not) fish tacos on corn tortillas with slaw, drizzled with Green Goddess dressing and a house red sauce. For all the omnivores out there, these are better than the real thing, super moist, not fishy, crisp and packed with flavor. Warning, this dish might ruin all other fish tacos for you.
Buffalo Chicken Ranch Wrap - Grilled chicken, buffalo sauce, sautéed mushrooms, and white onions, mozzarella, lettuce, and ranch dressing, stuffed inside a spinach tortilla. The key here is the vegan chicken, it's grilled instead of fried, so it's tender and not at all greasy, making it the perfect base for all the grilled onions and melty vegan cheese. This is vegan comfort food, or honestly even just comfort food, at it's best.
Breakfast Zoodle Bowl - Zucchini zoodles topped with tofu scramble, sautéed tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, peppers and carrots, then finished off with melted vegan cheddar, salsa, vegan sour cream, and green onions. It's light and refreshing but the cheese and sour cream make it feel so decadent, plus the salsa packs a ton of flavor. This one is so much greater than the sum of its parts. Breakfast of Champions... or any other meal of the day.
Unbelievably delicious (and deceptively healthy) vegan food, some of the friendliest service we've found in San Diego, and now, a full bar... you've got to check this place out! We'll be back and we might even see you there.

Made a reservation here 3 days in advance for 6pm. Prior to being shown to our table, I was told that due to two large parties that had arrived before us , it would take us an hour before we were even able to get any food to our table. I don't understand how this happens and if it was going to be an issue, why not just call me before we get to the restaurant and wait around for our table.
We decided that we'd just eat somewhere else but kinda ruined the night for us.
Food looked good online but looks like I'll never find out.

Save your money and go to Kindred, Trilogy, or Green Door. Louisiana fried chicken was so overdone that you had to jam the knife in it and hardly any flavor. Mashed potatoes also were flavorless; surprised the gravy didn't help! Waitress said it was "one of her favorites," but I'm thinking it was just lip service. Speaking of, service was great when there were only 2 tables, but then started getting pretty slow/inattentive once others started coming in. Huge portions and highly processed food.

Just because something is vegan doesn't mean it's healthy and this place is a perfect example. Vegan junk food, heavy, fatty, rich and decadent. If you are looking for non processed, organic, whole foods I would skip this place. If you want plant based diner food you might like it. The menu is massive and most of it is junk food just FYI. If you are health conscious I would just skip it.
We ordered the corn dogs, bah-mi sandwich and Thailand salad, none of it was amazing, flavorful or worth the calories. I doubt we will return.

This restaurant is a Vegan gem. They have an extensive vegan menu. The portions are large. The portion are so large, I have yet to eat dessert at The Modern Vegan. I might have to make a special dessert trip. The desserts are huge. I have eaten here almost every week at least once for the last 3 month. I have only had repeat meals twice. I am not a quarter of the way through the menu. They serve breakfast all day in additions to is a plus for me. The service is the best!
