First time trying Ethiopian food and it was delicious! Husband and I attempt to try a new cuisine every month, and glad we came across this place. Large potion size too! 2 sides and 1 entree were enough for both of us (and we're both big eaters) Awash Special Tibs - this was delicious! Really perfectly cooked beef tenderloin, lovely curry (right amount of spicy and didn't seem too oily even though it had butter). Injera - so soft and so fluffy and flavorful! And really big too! Husband enjoyed it plain as well! Tikil Gomen (cabbage side dish) - this had a lot of flavor, but also too much butter. Nice dish overall. Gomen (collard greens side dish) - this was soso. Decent flavor, but had a bit of pungent taste to it for some reason. Probably won't recommend it. Red paste that was on the ribs was nice. Very strong flavor so I wouldn't recommend having too much per bite.

I love the food here and the service every time I come in. The owners are super nice and the food is amazing. Been visiting with friends for many years, so best Ethiopian food in town. Only downsize is that the store is a mess, but has so much more potential to look more neat and clean.

Do not let the market confuse you. This is a great little restaurant. Would highly recommend the meat combo and the veggie combo for two. The meal is fantastic and gives you a great variety. Come here expecting an explosion of flavor, friendly staff and a homey vibe.

Extremely friendly, and the food came pretty quickly. Last call for food at 10. Open until 11. The only knock is that the building and decor is nothing special, and the restaurant is a section blocked off at the front of a grocery type of store. Would return. The food is solid with great veggie options.

What to say about this restaurant? I honestly really like it, my boyfriend too! When we got there we thought it was just a store but they have a restaurant in the front/back. As soon as we got in it we felt very welcomed by the server that was really kind. I don't think the restaurant would be the best option for a romantic night but it's definitely worth trying. The food is great, very Ethiopian authentic food and the menu is pretty flexible and not expensive. I was a little bit traumatized by spicy food from Ethiopian places, but this one was very well balanced! We ordered a vegetarian dish combo and my boyfriend requested a meat dish - Special Ribs-, and they all come with a LOT OF INJERA BREAD We highly recommend it for sure! It is located in North Park at El Cajon Boulevard avenue.

Incredible eating experience at a good price; I will be recommending this restaurant to friends and family in the future! I had an all around wonderful experiencing having dinner at Awash. The servers were incredibly friendly and excited to share the experience of Awash's food. They gave good suggestions and were attentive. When the food itself came out, it was absolutely delicious. I am actually surprised there was not a line of people out the door, as this food is just as delicious as any high end restaurant. I will DEFINITELY be returning in the future.

What a hidden gem! Restaurant is an unassuming space at the back of the store. The staff are friendly, welcoming, and happy to share information about the dishes and their traditional preparation. The menu is large with many different options, with a variety of meat and vegetarian dishes and different types of preparation and sauces. Sambusas were a really tasty start to the meal. No utensils, you eat in the traditional manner of using the injera to pick up the food by hand. Within a group of 8, four people ordered the Awash Special (#1), which was universally praised as delicious, with just the right level of spice. Others ordered dishes with lamb and the dry beef. Portions were ample and in sharing with the group, everything was delicious.

This is the best Ethiopian food I've had so far and the owner is super nice! He gave me extra food on top of my leftovers to go and told us he is been cooking for 14 years using his mama's recipe. Mama did good!

This place is a gem. Great food, our server was very fun (and provided some very solid recs), super charming hole-in-the-wall vibes, and a cool and diverse clientele. Also excellent, full-to-the-brim, homemade Tej for $20, which felt like a steal.
