Review Blue Water - San Diego

Z Cuvadar
The food is amazing. I cleaned the plate, and so did my wife. My only complaint is that after I ordered my food at the counter and scanned my credit card to pay the amount, I came across the usual tablet screen showing the suggested tip amounts. Since I hadn't tasted the food or experienced the service yet, I signed the tablet, and without choosing a tip amount, I hit continue. I was automatically charged the 20% tip. The cashier said it was because I had selected to tip. I advised her that I hadn't made any tip selection, and she offered to erase it from the bill. It is not that I don't want to tip, but I would like to tip based on the quality of the food and the service. I probably would have tipped more than the amount I was charged anyway. The fact that the tablet was set up to sneak in a 20% tip when no selection was made is not professional and should be changed. I will go back to this place again because the food really is amazing. But this time, I'll make sure to pay in cash. The food deserved a 20% tip. The service was not bad, but not 20% tip rated either. Cheers!

My husband and I saw pictures and reviews on-line so we decided to give it a try. Everything was delicious 😋 We tried dozen oysters, salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, sample size fish and chips and the muscles and clams. We were both delighted with our choices. Everything was fresh and expertly made. The service was friendly and so helpful. My husband and I will definitely be back.

Although not my first time dining here, every visit brings new surprises. The salmon sashimi was incredibly fresh and delectable, and the seafood soup was equally exceptional! We also gave the award-winning tacos a try, and they certainly lived up to the hype. The menu never fails to amaze, offering a wide variety of options. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, making it a great place for a relaxing meal. The staff is attentive and accommodating, adding to the overall positive experience.

I’ve tried the halibut sandwich and the red snapper sandwich so far. Red snapper is for people who love a fishier taste. Halibut is a safe option for people who don’t eat a lot of seafood. The “Track Taco” is the bomb. It’s a pricey taco for $8.50 but the taste will show you paid for higher quality fish. It’s a great place to find a variety of fish that can be made into a taco, sandwich or a plate.

A good option for seafood in San Diego with its convenient location & good quality. Went there a few times, easy to find parking across the street (like 20 feet away) but there was always a little line due to its popularity. Salmon sashimi is must try (come with rice and avocado somehow) as well as chowder- creamy, filling and tasty. I hate the wasabi they used for the salmon tho. Oyster is fresh but pretty small in size. Award winning tacos are good with shrimp but again too much add ons stuff for me that i can nearly taste the original flavor. Amazing vibe if you could sit outside in sunny days.

The food is really good and tasty. Everything is freshly made and on order. The service Level is a 2/5 Self service and not really friendly employees. They do not even know what is available and what isn’t. While we where eating there was a dead mouse in the restaurant they could at least offer us some compensation for that but instead a guy from the kitchen just came and grabbed the mouse with a towel after we told the waitress….

Great place to eat fresh fish in different forms. Fish tacos are a must (Swordfish is delicious, advocado is not really necessary to add). We also tried the Oysters and fried calamari, which were good, but fish tacos are the best. You can also buy your fish to cook at home. Overall our favorite fish tacos place in the San Diego area.

The family and I stopped in while vacationing and were overall very impressed!! I ordered the fish and chips with fried red snapper and Mordecai, our son ordered the fried cod. Neither of us like the cod, it was tough and really chewy. Eden, our youngest absolutely demolished the clam chowder, shrimp and mussel appetizer dish. And there was almost a family fight over the fish tacos!! (Must order!) Siraya our oldest has the seafood nachos and Bianca ordered the Salmon salad!! The table was full of smacking and finger licking!!! 🤣🤣🤣 Only things I would critique would be a larger space to hold the large crowds and a little more seasoning on the food…

The food: The Mahi Mahi is so good paired with rice and salad with capers. I don't typically mess with mussels but the one here are so tasty and not ridiculously chewy. Fair price for plates .... overpriced drinks. As far as service the menu is large and staff didn't explain well what some of the plates had to offer. Atmosphere the inside music is way to loud. Outside was a completely different atmosphere which was lovely unfortunately its getting to the season where outdoors dining is too cold. Line blocks customers from leaving.

Always my last stop out of San Diego when heading back to LA. This place has ruined calamari for me at every other restaurant as they use real squid. The cocktail sauce and tarter are both delicious dipping options. The freshest fish orders you can ask for.

Everything we ordered were so good and fresh and delicious! Large potion size and great price! Love the clam chowder, it might not be the best clam chowder I have ever had but it’s definitely the best bread bowl of all time! The fried calamari were so fresh and crispy. The shrimps were huge and a lot of crab meat they were both sweet and fresh! Also the batter scallop taco tasted so good and it’s so big!

Everything was so fresh. The oysters were the start of the show. Fresh, great hot sauce/horseradish dip. The shrimp nachos were also good, definitely a sharing size. Clam chowder (not pictured) was solid and it was a cloudy day. Friendly staff managing tables, please don’t sit until you’ve ordered, at the front they’ll help you find a table. We’ll be back for more sashimi, salads and more fresh fish!

Come here and get a mouth full of grilled fish taco with selected seafood, lettuce, tomatoes and tasty sauce. I liked their swordfish tacos, and their fries. Seafood soup is creamy. Fried calamari is also decent. Nice interior with fish decoration and photo.

Best fish tacos in all of SD. Get their seabass, it's delicious. Service was lacking a bit, not sure of its like that normally or because it was busy. Also their coleslaw is one of the best I've ever had. Very underrated as people don't seem to mention that.
luvtub_ca
Great seafood market with an eatery as well. Service fast and friendly on both sides. The diner line is usually long and truly indicative of the great taste! Multiple ways to cook and flavor choices - all great choices - most plates are large enough for one plate with a soup order to serve two.

Huge tip: decide what you want to order prior to getting to the cash register. Look for the chalkboard sign notifying customers of specials and what they are no longer offering/out of. Tables are assigned after you order, you cannot sit down at an empty table while someone else waits in line to order unless you are directed to do so. It would be helpful to streamline the ordering process (in order to not wait in the line for so long). You can't order ahead and then eat at a table in the restaurant. All takeaway orders must literally be taken away. Food was great!

Indoor, outdoor, and street outdoor seating Order at counter and then sit down. Bit on the pricey side but the food is delicious. Recommend coming here if you are visiting San Diego Order Half fish and chips for yourself The fish tacos are amazing Oyster if you love oysters, no selections, only one type of oyster. Poke bowls, has pineapple flavor added. Poke comes with rice on the side, the rice is mixed with a mayonnaise kind of sauce. Parking can be difficult Street parking only

Great spot for a quick bite to eat. Many items to choose from and some great beers as well. The location is small and can get crowded during peak hours. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The selection and quality of the fish here is on point. A definite must try for foodies and seafood lovers.

Fantastic. The food is fresh and well-prepared, and the staff polite and efficient. The clam chowder was the best I've ever eaten. Thick, creamy, full of clams and potatoes. The seared ahi taco and beer-battered lobster taco were fresh and filling. I'm coming back!

ame here after a long day at the San Diego Zoo. There was a line but it seemed to move pretty fast! Don't give up because of the line! It moves fast and the food is worth the wait. There's a sign that says it's not fast food as each order is made to order. Fish was fresh! We ordered a halibut plate, ahi sandwich, ahi poke, clam chowder, fried calamari and ahi sashimi!

Food was amazing and fresh. You definitely have to eat here if in San Diego.
Isuru Seneviratne
Incredibly fresh seafood done simply and done well! Large selection of fish types to choose from and served in multiple ways and multiple marinades. This is a must try place!

Found this place by chance while looking for a quick bite on Zumato. A little bit of a wait to get a table and for good reason as the food was unbelievable and there were lots of people wanting to eat.

My wife had the Wasabi sesame coated Ahi Tuna as a salad. The seared tuna was cooked perfectly and melted in your mouth. The blue cheese dressing for the salad was also a treat in itself with real chucks of blue cheese! I had the soft shell crab as a sandwich and have not had better anywhere - simply and elegantly done so you could really taste the crispy coating of the crab and the soft inside. My 3 year old had the kids fish and chips grilled with lemon butter, ate all of it with no issues - she loved the tartar sauce. The meal was finished off with some grilled shrimp which where cooked perfectly and a generous portion - again my daughter ate most of them leaving little for us.

Sad we found this place so late on our trip to San Diego as there are several more thing to try on the menu!
Rick Francis
The food was fantastic and so was the service. I recommend callng ahead if you don't want to wait. I had the Fresh, local caught halibut. The marinade they recommended was awesome and it could not have been cooked any better. Great place to eat for friends or family.

Lobster season is here, and with so many seafood restaurants to choose from in San Diego, it can be hard to decide where to go for the perfect dish. Where you go depends on what you’re in the mood for – fine dining? Quick bite? Hosting a party and want to order in? Here’s a short list of San Diego’s best places to eat for lobster season.

Blue Water Seafood Market & Grill is located right off the 5 on India St. near downtown San Diego. The food served here is what inspired us to start our Good Eats adventure.

Walk into The Blue Water Grill and make your way to the seafood market section where you can order delicious fish and seafood to take home or to eat on the spot.

The way the market is set-up is really cool. Choose the type of fish you'd like from the long list, then the type of marinade, and finally how you would like it to be prepared: as a sandwich, salad, plate, tacos or a la carte. Pretty simple, but at the same time it provides so many options and different ways to tempt your palate!

If fish tacos are what you're craving while visiting San Diego, then look no further as those served in the Blue Water Seafood Market rank among the best, if not THE best, fish tacos that San Diego has to offer. Perhaps fried shrimp is more your style? They serve the finest fried shrimp I've ever tasted in Southern California. Fresh is an understatement. Everything you find here is incredible. Be prepared to wait in line though, as this place is no longer the hidden secret it once was.

My friend and I dined at the Blue Water Seafood with four other friends and we all enjoyed the experience.

I ordered the seafood paella which was outstanding with plenty of seafood in it. While the option appeared a bit larger than I expected, I was happy to share some of the mussels with my friend.

My friend ordered the seafood stuffed pasta shells which was excellent. The pasta shells were perfectly cooked - not too soft and the sauce was delicious.

I enjoyed a Goombay Smash (cocktail) which was beautiful while my husband had a glass of brown ale which he close from a good selection of beers.

We received excellent service from a friendly staff and the overall atmosphere was great.

It was our first day in Chattanooga and were impressed.

We read reviews and wanted to see what the buzz was all about. Arrived on a Sunday night at 7 pm to be greeted by a long line out the door. Someone had gone inside and purchased some smoked salmon for the wait and shared it around which was nice. ( delicious also). As you wait and wait, you have enough time to make some good card buddies in line. We waited about an hour and ten minutes to get to the front. By then we were definitely wondering if it was worth it. It looks like some folks in the know called a take out order and picked up, thus skipping the big line. That might be a good way to go, not sure of the logistics.

When you get to the front, you order your fish. You have waited in line by the fresh fish case and can see what looks best. There are often differing selections based upon what is in season and what they have.

We decided to get tacos, but you can get a plate or a salad also. They say the tacos are at least 4 oz of fish. I would guess it was more. For 5 or 6 bucks, we shared tacos of fresh coho from british colombia, locally caught blue fin tuna and halibut, and some mexican black cod. The fish was amazingly fresh and super well prepared. you can choose the sauce that they use before grilling, but to us, non of that made the difference. It was all about the fish.

I couldn't believe the bluefin tuna taco. That stuff sells for 25 dollars a lb and they give you a quarter pound of it for 6 bucks on that taco. They knew to leave it super rare as it is a sushi grade superstar. What a value.

They use some local homemade corn tortillas and some slaw to augment the taco. We couldn't hardly eat two each but kept plowing ahead as the fish was so good.

I would try this place for sure, just be ready for the ridiculous wait. The place isn't fancy at all, but the people were super nice and friendly and worked their tails off.

Great no frills restaurant and seafood market.
Very fresh, well cooked, your way. Expect a line when you order, but definitely worth the wait. Visiting from out of town, been twice. Fish tacos are wonderful

Don't get me wrong, this place lives up to its hype....but I'm glad I went for lunch. The recommendation was glowing, so I had to try it... And being from coastal Georgia I KNOW fresh seafood. Fresh it is.... The iced case shows you what you'll be getting, served as you like it-tacos, sammich, or a la carte. I opted for the halibut since it was top of the specials board but it was so mild (even with the counter girl's rec for the spicy chipotle) I wish I had chosen a bit stronger fish like the snapper or trout. The kid went for fish and chips and the beer batter was extra tasty! We also had a few appetizers; seaweed salad and the ONION RINGS (!) both were just what we needed for the wait. The sign says," this isn't a fast food restaurant...." And they are right... Not fast but surely good. Worth it! I was initially put off by the 25 deep line even before the doors opened (we were told to get there thirty minutes prior to be first in line-great advice we didn't take) but the line moved well, since most folks knew the ordering drill, and we picked up on it by being about 26th in line...so, look over the menu as you wait and get your list memorized or be the subject of serious eye rolling...I saw several tourists get it, and it burned.... Burned, I'm tellin ya. Parking is a bear... But where in this town ISN'T it? Convenient to most places but far enough away to keep the lookie Lou's from just wandering in and making the crowd even worse (think anywhere in the gaslamp district). I would seek these cats out again, but let them get a little wilder on fish and marinade combos.... The counter will make that recommendation if you have the rest of your order ready when your turn comes up...get some!

What a find! The ultimate seafood restaurant of our trip to San Diego so far! They know fish, they have a large variety of fish, they can cook fish, they can serve fish fairly quickly (5PM/Wed) and they keep the place clean. I didn't care for their background music, but hey, we came to eat! You can sit inside or outside, we preferred the A/C. First you go up to the counter and order, pay, and receive a numbered table flag which you use to claim your table (I felt like an explorer claiming new land for my country :) and they know where to deliver your meal. They offer a dozen different fresh fish to be consumed by the plate, sandwich, salad or taco. We ordered by the plate which means an 8 oz. piece of grilled fish (you choose the seasoning) with Jasmine rice and a salad. They go over to the fresh fish counter, remove a large piece of your chosen fish, slice off a half pound fillet and take it to the grill chef who uses your chosen marinade and grills it. For a sandwich they would slice off a 6 oz. fillet!!! When we entered I noticed several people eating fish tacos. My wife ordered the Salmon, blackened, and I the Wahoo with lemon/garlic marinade. We couldn't decide whose fish was better. They were both 10's, perfectly prepared and tasted extremely fresh and flavorful. We also tried their clam chowder, also fabulous. The staff checked on us frequently, very attentive but not intrusive. There was so much food we were barely able to eat it all, and we were hungry when we got there. We will definitely try to return and try a sandwich.

Best seafood I have had in a long time. Oysters were absolutely delish. The crab and artichoke dip was great but huge so better have a couple people to share it if you want to try it. Ate the Red Snapper plate with blue cheese dressing for the salad and it was great. The rice was great and the fish was cooked perfectly! Great price. Will be coming back again!

My favorite fish tacos ever. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Taco portions are large. I love the fresh specials. Poke is a delicious shared item or make a whole meal.

Blue water. Ordered then they seated us at a table in the patio. Had clam chowder was delicious. Beat shark pate that I've had in a long time! Very tasty and huge portion.

Save your money!!

I live in the neighborhood and was drawn by the reputation of the place. The experience was FAR different. If you're lucky enough to not be standing on the street in line, from the door it was 40 minutes to place my order. For a good meal, this is not a deal breaker.

Once seated, the waitress brings out a "dozen" oysters. Actually, it was only TEN. I can see missing one oyster. But to be TWO short is unacceptable. When I told the waitress, her response was only a simple "humph.." no apology or basic courtesy...nothing. 20 minutes later we FINALLY get our two errant oysters.

In the end, 2 entrees, dozen oysters, and 2 drinks come to almost $90!! I normally wouldn't mind. But for eating out of plastic baskets, poor service, and the lack of basic math skills by the waitress, this is ridiculous!

Save this place for the tourists.

Wish I could have tasted everything on menu. While visiting San Diego, this place was recommended by our hotel concierge. We Uber'd from the Manchester Grand Hyatt and after immediately dropped off, had to stand in line. The line was out the door to the corner of the building partially blocking the parking lot.
After a good 30-45 mins, we were very close to the counter to order. I want to give props to the two lovely ladies who were doing multiple jobs of busing tables, delivering food to tables, taking drink orders, making sure everyone got a seat..they were busy.
We ordered half dozen oysters on the half shell-best oysters I have had in a very long time, wish I ordered a dozen or more.
I had the blackened hawaiian wahoo sandwich..It was great-perfectly seasoned and cooked on a nice toasted bun; wife had the blackened mahi-mahi fish tacos-huge serving of fish-I would of preferred a little more heat. I dont know if they buy off the shelf flour tortillas or if they have them hand made (would be a nice touch) but no complaints about them.
Wanted to try their panko crusted tilapia so ordered the fish and chips kids meal. Nice golden brown crust with a great crunch, inside was moist. Great waffle fries too.
Only downside was that their cioppino was out for the day and most of their Ballast Point drafts were out.
Wish I could of sampled more of the fresh seafood but hopefully the next time I am in San Diego, I will visit again.
Highly recommend! Was not disappointed.

Locals recommend but tourists are finding. We have had a long day and wanted fish. Googled local faves and found a wonderful "hole in the wall cabbie didn't even know about it" place. fresh fish...friendly servers... not uppity but great food. very satisfied! !
Tbranam
Seafood was obviously fresh.... Seafood was obviously fresh, however, the restaurant wasn't what we expected. You stand in line to order, and we arrived on a Friday night, problem one. We spent a long time circling the place just trying to find a parking place! After finally finding a parking place(be aggressive) we waited in line to place our order. We were amused by the fact it was next to the Regal Beagle, but that faded quickly during out wait to place our order. My husband picked shark, I picked Opah and we went with a plate which included rice and a generous salad. I loved the house vinigrette, Paul close ranch. Being a huge fan of blackened, my husband and I both choose bronzed - blackened with brown sugar. Great potential... We found a table and waited with our bottle of Bliss Chardonnay. When the food arrived, it was obviously fresh but it lacked seasoning. I should have tried a stronger seasoning just to contrasts with Paul's. Very disappointing, especially with the great reviews from TripAdvisor. Perhaps we just picked the wrong preparation, but I won't send anyone there and I won't give it a second try.,
Karen Good
As the sign says "This is not a fast food restaurant. All orders are made to order." There is a wait to order but the food is WELL worth the wait . Absolutely delicious!! Grilled perfectly! If you're in a hurry call your order in and pick it up. Busy place-go early
AsleepInSeattle
Very good seafood, BUT surly service. The servers radiate an attitude of, "I do not care." Also, the restaurant has very close to zero atmosphere. If you can get past these two issues, there is a wide choice of fresh seafood and this superbly cooked. I had a fish taco and my wife had the fish salad. Both were excellent. Just do not expect friendly service.
Randomwit
Total Crap. Unprofessional. NOT service oriented. Flat out rude.. Beware of the rude members of this family. They insult customers with impunity. All of the owners' children and many other relatives work for here. They are rude, they lie, and it is impossible to report incidents to management because management is comprised solely of their family members.

AVOID THIS PLACE IF YOU CARE TO HAVE A GOOD MEAL IN A NICE ATMOSPHERE!!!
Michael Baker
Wow. No frills but a great spread of seafood. Fish soup was the best I've had. Sandwich, tacos, salads, or plates, everything our group had was of the chart
Larry Beauvais
Great Seafood in San Diego. SD is a great town on the water but is short on good seafood restaurants. Blue Water is a very good one. Try the grilled shrimp with bourbon butter sauce.
Abfatino
Worth the wait. Get the clam chowder. And pretty much anything else here.
Mrs_wolf
Excellent, casual seafood. My husband and I went here for dinner on vacation on a Wednesday night. The service was very nice and efficient. The food was great! I had the shrimp ceviche and a shrimp taco. The taco was absolutely delicious but the shrimp ceviche was not at all like real ceviche. It was more like a shrimp cocktail. My hubby had the grilled ahi tuna plate. He is still raving about it to anyone who will listen. The tuna was perfectly cooked; seared on the outside and rare on the inside. It was very fresh and tasty. The portions are very good. They don't skimp at all. The clam chowder is also delicious. I wish I had tried the lobster bisque and the ahi poke. They had the poke in the fresh fish case and it looked more like what I would expect ceviche to look like.
Chris Hutson
Excellent seafood in a quaint atmosphere. The shark was amazing. The ahi poke very tasty.
Josh
Myself and my wife both had fish tacos and shard some poke. The fish was fresh and the portion size was generous but wasn't well seasoned. I would say that the tacos were a little below average for me. Just not really flavorful.

Box Artist this is not the place for you! Move on.

Twice; it's geat.. Parking is tough, but the food is great. Staff very helpful and busy; they expect us, to be patient, too. If you're demanding go to the fish market, but the food isn't as the Blue Wave.
Grynne
Used this site to pick a local seafood place to eat after a day of sightseeing in Mission Bay/Valley. Coming from DC I guess I was able to read between the lines and wasn't bothered by their seating arrangements considering while we were there and after we sat down, no one had to wait for a table immediately after ordering. What struck me first has been mentioned earlier - no fish smell. The wait gives you plenty of time to choose which fish you'd like from the case right next to you, and the cuts are generous. Staff was pleasant and efficient, place was super busy but clean! We had the snapper and yellowtail plates, both fish had excellent flavor and we were very satisfied at the end of our meal. We got there around 4p, not a long wait but the line was starting to head out the door when we left after 5p. We will definitely hit this spot again on our next visit.
Levell
It was pretty good. I guess I got lucky because I went around 3:30 and no line. The oysters were not very good. The Hawaiian Wahoo was awesome as was the rice pilaf. The salad was fresh and tasty. The fried crab taco was all slaw and sauce....not worth the price. Overall it was ok. But not worth the price compared to other places.
Bewiched
Four of us went for lunch, 3 enjoyed it. True the line is long but the service was fine. The fish tacos are fresh and filling. We had a baby sitting next to us who wouldn't shut up, so that was irritating.

Will probably try a different place for fosh tacos the next time.
Kaylann101
Yes it's fresh. Yes some of the staff is rude. We waited 1 hour and they sold out of 3 of the 4 items we wanted. Was it worth it? Unfortunately not.
FoodDude
BlueWater...it ROCKS!. I have been visiting this place for the last 4 years, and I have enjoyed EVERYTHING that I have ordered. Fried calamari and the soft shelf crab sammy are my favorites. I live in AZ, but no trip to SD is complete before I eat here. The seafood is so fresh and grilled to perfection. Very good prices...avoid the lines on weekends (bleah). One of my favorite places in the country.

BAD BUSINESS PRACTICE!!!. The Blue Water Seafood Market & Grill has been featured on TV and it was a MUST on our 5000 mile road-trip from California to New Jersey. We were SOOOOO looking forward to it.

BUT...

The first time, the line was sooo long out the door, it was not worth the wait, and we were really too hungry. So we thought, we'll try again tomorrow.

Next day, 3pm, Not rush time, only 1 person at the door, so it appears the line was not long. We park, get in line, and once inside the door, we see the line continues from the front door another 50 feet to the back of the restaurant.

If a restaurant cannot accommodate it's customers in any reasonable way, and forces them to be so uncomfortable and treated like cattle just to sample their food, I don't care if it tastes like it's from the hands of God himself!

It's not right, it's not good business, and it's upsetting.

SOOO, we walked up the street to the next corner and had an amazing meal at The Saffron Restaurant, 3737 India Street. The entrees were so good my friend ordered a second same entree. Their peanut sauce is amazing, and the photos of presidents, Oprah, Dianne Sawyer, and Martha Stewart posing with the owner attest to the fact others like the restaurant as well.

I should note here, we are Firehouse Publishing, and are writing a road-trip travel guide, and this misadventure, and redemption will be mentioned in the book.

Blue Water gets ONE STAR because by sheer luck, we found a better place to eat that took care of it's customers!
Stuart
Great Fish,Even better service. This place is a find! If you have not been there yet, you are missing the best seafood experience in San Diego, maybe even SoCal!!! Cooked to perfection, fresh, the way you like it and served by the friendliest girls on the planet. The specials are nicely priced. Get there early..there is a line out the door...and they do not know the word "no."
Irma
Exquisit. Best clam chowder and sandwichs, I love sea food and this place has some really good fish always fresh abundant and cheap.
Jenica.clark
Had to try since Guy came here. Yummy fish tacos with huge chunks of fish in them but don't go before closing since they were out of a lot of different kinds we would have tried. Very fresh. Cioppino was ok. Good chunks of fish in it but no seafood.
Mimi
Great food. Great service very busy so it seemed to take a little bit longer to get our food but well worth the wait. Not a place you can get in and out of quick. We really enjoyed our meals!! Highly recommend!!

Terrble customer srevice! all hype. I was really looking forward to trying this place out based on the reviews. We did not last for 5 minutes, the staff is extremely rude and guests are fighting over tables because the policy is to order first. I was with my family and did not want them to wait in line while i was ordering so i had them sit down. We were ready to sample some cool dishes out because i am an executive chef and enjoy other foodie spots.I am sure the bill would have been $$$$! The server marched over to my wife and 6 year old daughter and rudely said "YOU MUST LEAVE THIS TABLE NOW!" ...IT IS FOR PAYING CUSTOMERS... THOSE WHO ORDERED" WOW! what a way to make an impression! Then, my wife got up and motioned to me to "Lets leave this place" so we did. As we were leaving, the server again mocked my wife and laughed. FYI: Places like this who think they are invincible...do not last long no matter how great they think they are. We went to La Jolla and went to El Pescador instead. Great find, positive energy and worth the trip! Shame on Blue Water Seafood! your staff and energy will ruin you...I will make sure never to recommend this place to anyone and give my honest review on all open forums.
TJ
Disappointing fish tacos. With all the rave reviews, i am left with two possible explanations. 1. we were there on a bad night and didnt get a good representation of their product. 2. People in San Diego know nothing about fish tacos. Fish was tough, bland and way over cooked. Lettuce was shredded from bag. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing, but i definately wouldnt stand in line for 45 mins.
Tunit
Delicious Seafood. Blue Water has a great selection of fresh seafood, and I love fresh seafood. Thy offer plenty of fish varieties, available depending on the season, and you get it on your choice of sandwich, salad, plate, or taco with a selection of sauces.

I had to get the halibut and I thought it was one of the best pieces of fish I`ve ever had. Soft, moist and warm, it broke apart before I could even bite into it. So the sandwich that I ordered was a bit messy and soaked completely through the toasted bread, but each bite was full of fresh flavour thanks to the great seasoning and the lemon garlic sauce.

Had to also start the meal with a 1/2 dozen oysters and they were fantastic. Full and fresh the came with a cup of seafood, garlic dip. The oysters had a great substance to them and a nice salty flavour.

At 1 p.m. on a weekend, the line-up was still long and never slowed down, but the tables turned over quickly and food came out in a reasonable amount of time. Blue Water is a great place for around $10 for an amazing meal and it's so close to the international airport, I'll stop by each time I visit San Diego.

Very busy place but worth it. Ordered two fish tacos and bowl of clam chowder. Was full after the clam chowder!! Tacos were huge. Total price with pint of beer was under $20!! Bravo!! Helpful hint... Don't go to this place with a large group, it is not designed for that type of gathering. Take your family or a group of four and seating will not be an issue!!

Fantastic fish, great prices. A jumbo shrimp sandwich for around ten bucks. The fish is always fresh, the fries are really good. Choose your fish, your sauce, your style, it's all up to you. Sometimes a long line but don't be deterred it is worth it.

The place for SDs best fish. Triple D got this one right on the money. You know you'll be going to a fish place when you're in San Diego, and you know that seafood is a waste of your time unless it's fresh, so just don't screw around, Blue Water is the place to find what you're looking for. You've heard about Fish Tacos being practically the official food of this town, and this is where you want to go to get them. It's not a beach-side shack like you wish it were, but you could always close your eyes and pretend the freeway noise was waves crashing, right? Amazingly fresh and perfectly cooked is the order of the day here. Do yourself a favor and call ahead and take it to-go. The sideways looks from the people who are 45 minutes into the line and still haven't ordered are worth it. Plus, the place is far less inviting than your kitchen table or hotel room.

No stinky fish here!. There is only one way to judge a fish place and that is, does it smell like fish? If the place smells of fish, run away to Blue Water Seafood and Grill. The fish here is fresh and the resturant smells of an ocean breeze. I had the Shrimp Ceviche, which was fresh and cold as ceviche should be, I followed up with a Sockeye Salmon sandwich that had an 8 ounce piece of fresh Alaskin Salmon on a toasted roll with fresh avacado. Wonderful! If you like fresh tasty seafood that hasn't been battered and deep fried this place is for you. Go early as there is always a line.

So-so.... As frequent visitors to San Diego, we had heard several favorable comments about this place and finally tried it on a recent trip. Yet another example of being disappointed by someone else's favorite spot. Maybe OK for people who don't get out much, but a disappointment if you regularly eat fish in any of several places on the Monterey peninsula. Thought they had a pretty good system for an informal spot, but the theory looks better than it works in actual practice. Long wait while standing, overcooked, tasteless fish. We won't go back, many better choices available in the area.

Fish tacos and calamari, yum! Great price also.

Ultimate Fish Tacos. Wow these tacos last night were truly delicious by a whole bunch!!!! All this in a fun line up to order then sit down funky very casual environment. The young ladies taking orders and serving had to go at light speed, which they did with professionalism and charm and these customers were grateful for them. Fresh fish of many varieties to order, local Halibut was the bomb last night. Ceviche and Ahi Poke were good but the fish tacos were so good I'll take out of town guests to Blue Water for that super tasty, funky, local dining experience that will be one of the favorite places they went in their trip to San Diego stories. We'll be back and often, YUMMMMM!!!!! Fun!!!

We are traveling from Texas. Fish is very fresh and cooked perfectly! The cioppino is also excellent! My wife and I had the tacos, and two is plenty per person. We had the halibut, ahi, and mahi tacos, with chipotle, teriyaki, and lemon garlic butter marinades in that order. Everything is very fresh which makes it very pleasing to the palate. -Texas Travelers

We end up at "Blue Water Seafood", in the Mission Hills Area, which has a nice outside patio and also inside tables, there is fresh fish and huge shrimp and other seafood on display(they are also a market not just a restaurant). We order the Black sea bass(Bill are you reading this) sandwich ,which is only $13, plus 2 sodas, and a huge bowl of clam chowder, total with tax $22. The tables outside are full so we eat inside. The chowder with 2 spoons and soda we get at the counter, 30 seconds later it was dueling spoons, Dixie and I battling to eat the chowder, creamy not too many potatoes, tender clams, just right spicing. Then the sea bass sandwich arrives, already split for us, At least 7 ounces of delicious fresh flaky white fish on each side, absolutely no black stripe on either piece, that always turns us off when the chef does nor clean the fish properly. This was a meal fit for us.

Clam Chowder is worth a return visit. Based on the write-up this place had a lot of potential. Our meal began with clam chowder - excellent. More clams than anything in the soup. Next was a shark taco which was a bit disappointing. The final selection was a calamari sandwich. I wasn't really impressed with the taste. There was nothing wrong with how the sandwich was made, cooked or prepared, it just wasn't for me.

Good Food, Great Value. This place was recommended to me by a friend of a friend. I'm so glad I went. For well under 10 dollars, I had a really nice size salad with two generous sized sword fish fillets. Good beer selection too.

My husband and I saw this place on television and knew we had to give it a try. Great fish and very successful concept for a seafood place but we will never return due to the poor service. If I could give the owners some advice it would be to relieve the blonde with the mole on her face so she can find a better suited job for her personality so she doesn't ruin the dining experience of what could be a great seafood place. Overall great seafood at a great price with horrible, rude service.

This rating is way too high. Although the fish is decent at this restaurant; a couple of down points: High Prices (white tablecloth price) for service on paper plates. No wait service, you order at a counter and not very helpful at the counter. Side servings are not very good, very bland rice and very bland salad. Most of this would be ok, but given the high prices I would totally recommend other seafood eateries with table service in San Diego.

ALL AROUND AMAZING!!. Great all around experience. Seafood was extremely fresh, good atmosphere, service was friendly and efficient. Two thumbs up here, I will definitely be back.

Good food. Cioppino was average. Opah and shrimp tacos are excellent

Very Good!!!!!!!!!!!!. Crowded at times but that is for only one reason its good!
They buy fish from local fishermen and usually have hot chicks working in there.

Wow. We went to Blue Water for the first time last week, all I can say is wow! I had the fish tacos and oysters on the half shell, both were great. The line can be long so pick off times to go.

Loved this place. Great fish and shrimp tacos! Grilled, not deep fried, and what a selection of fish to choose from. Shrimp tacos were filled with big perfectly cooked prawns. Norwegian Salmon plate was outstanding!

Great and big food for money. Great fish tacos, large portion of fish in tacos for under $5. Great food, can't wait to go back to have a sandwich

As someone who usually avoids seafood, I was pleasantly surprised at how good my fish & chips was. It must have Bern very fresh, it had 0% fishy smell or taste. It wasn't deep fried either, like you get at most places. Instead it was pan fried with very little breading. I was skeptical, but, it yum yum delicious.

The food was amazing. I tried the Jumbo Shrimp sandwich and the Calamari sandwich. Shrimp was in lemon butter and the Calamari was in chipotle. But I think what gave the sandwich most of the flavor was their tartar sauce. Atmosphere of the dining area could use some improvements.

Altough decor and service is way in the low zero in the Zagat scale, seafood was amazing. Had the grilled Alaskan Halibut with seaweed salad and Jasmine rice. The fish was seasoned and grilled to perfection. Rice was a bit soggy. The seaweed salad is a course onto itself.

We LOVED it. The 40 minute wait to dine on a Friday night was well worh it. The price was very reasonable given the quality and quantity of the meal. My husband had the yellowtail fish & chips, I had two yellowtail fish tacos and we shared a crab & shrimp cocktail for an appetizer. The cocktail sauce had too much horseradish for my taste but the meals were yummy. This is definitely on our list.

In the end, like the muppets, Blue Water is a gimmick that works. If you have an hour to kill, don’t see it as a long line but instead as an experience and enjoy; the fish is well worth the wait.

We were fortunate to find this place, as it’s only really known by the locals (and being near an off ramp to a highway, it doesn’t surprise me that visitors know about the place). I was grateful for a glimpse into proper local food, and seeing as I practically had to be rolled to the car after lunch – clearly I enjoyed it!

The salad comes with cucumbers, tomatoes, capers, lettuce, and red onions – it’s pretty plain without the dressing, but the dressing is way too sweet to put on the salad.

Nancy had the grilled shrimp plate with a garlic butter sauce that she says was really good. Sherry had a calamari sandwich, also "really good" -- I can't get these people to be more descriptive in their praise...
