I was in old town 4 some work, I service most of S D but I rarely get down to this area, I took a quick stroll down the blvd hungery for authentic mexican food, I chose this place on a whim, I figured it would either be really bad or really good, I was not disappointed, I chose the chilaquiles con huevos & BAMMMMM they were on point! Just like tia used 2 make, arguably the best I've ever had, I got a healthy portion that I snacked on for the rest of the day I will definitely be back, The service, A young man was really nice & engaged in conversation Needles 2 say I tipped fat, I tipped close 2 the equivalent of my meal!

If you get a chance, have the Aztec Steak. It’s amazing. The hand made tortillas are to die for too.

Love this place! Great Mexican Food and outstanding Service... Love the freshly made Corn & Flour Tortillas. Good selection of Food and even Healthy Selections too! (First time I've seen "Soy Chorizo" on any Menu.) Selection of Margaritas good also. When visiting Old Town, stop by to eat, you won't be disappointed!!

Great street tacos with hand pressed tortillas. The shrimp and octopus cocktail and tostada supreme were crazy big. Came in hungry but ended up taking half of the tostada home. Go early for lunch as the line up was down the block by the time we left.

Had a quick late lunch here. Skipped the one hour wait by finding seats in the bar area. Linda the server was quick, helpful and efficient. Recommended the chicken verde enchiladas as we wanted something lighter. Washed down with cold beers, was delightful and tasty - not overly salty. Guacamole dip was ok, but we prefer it chunkier. Live mariachi music playing nearby in restaurant added to the vibrant ambiance. Washroom was relatively clean, a nice plus! Place was packed at 2 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon - obviously popular. Would return and sit at the bar again for a quick bite. $41 before tax.

The chorizo craving was satisfied! OTMC doesn’t skimp on the chorizo con huevos. The portion was huge and delicious. It’s mildly spicy, so ask for the house salsa. It’s served with beans and rice and two house made flour tortillas. The service is quick and friendly. Try OTMC.

Was looking for a good place for lunch on my visit to old town. This was mentioned as one of the top place. They had waiting for 10 minutes but later the service was pretty fast. Food was good and really fresh but portions are small compared to other mex8can place

Multiple visits while sitting at the bar and ordering dinner have all been extremely enjoyable.
The service is always good, the food exceptional. During a recent visit I had the Mexican shrimp cocktail and a chili relleno with a side of their amazing tortillas.
The taco salad and Mariscada pictured are both in a class of their own. While I'm no expert on Mexican food. this place never disappoints.

We ordered the Ranchero Steak Special. It was a small cast iron skillet of steak, onion, and peppers in tomato sauce with rice and bean on the side. The house made tortillas were absolutely delicious, warm and soft. The unsweetened iced tea was brewed and fresh. The prices were reasons and portions just right.

Fun atmosphere. I ordered the battered shrimp tacos - a Sunday special and my spouse ordered the street tacos.
Rice and beans were great, only one shrimp per taco (kind of skimpy if you ask me) but the manager asked the cook to grab me some more. Great customer service.
The street tacos were all amazing! Meat cooked to perfection.

First meal I had in San Diego, so not much to compare it with. However, since eating in other restaurants in the area, this is definitely my favourite.

I had the carne asada, which was tender, juicy and very rare, just how I like it. The refried beans are the best I've had since being here, and their habanero salsa also the best (and I'm a scotch bonnet/habanero queen).

Service was fab, my waitress was lovely, and I enjoyed a few margaritas with some random locals after my meal. Loved it!

Best Mexican food in Old Towns. Hand downs. The best Mexican food Old Town had to offer. Awesome homemade corn tortillas. I was in a party of 4 and we all enjoyed something different. To name a few of the big hits: Chicken Verdes Enchiladas, Chicken & Rice Soup, and the margaritas.

Good and fresh. My husband and I ate here while in the area on the recommendation of a local. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. I had the potato rolled taquitos that were hot and covered with fresh toppings. There were four with a side of black beans. He had enchiladas that were very good also. We would love to come back to the area and try some of the other Mexican restaurants, something that we like. We ate around 2:30 and were not hungry for the remainder of the day. Very satisfying. One of the best places that we ate while in the area for a week. Wish I could speak so favorably about the others. :(

Friday at 2:30pm, no wait. Very attentive staff catered to my requests and made sure I was taken care of. Top notch michelada, warm tortilla chips served with decent pico de gallo. Carnitas plate was very good - although the condition of the tomatoes and cilantro that came with it left something to be desired. Overall a great experience.

I've been coming to OTMC for nearly 40years now. Just had lunch there today. They never disapoint. Great burritos , the flour tortillas are life changing morsels of pure delight. YUM! Pricing is slightly above the neighborhood average, however , I have never walk out of there feeling ripped off. I LOVE burritos. Next to my children my mom and my awsome girlfriend I love them more than anything on earth. And OTMC will prepare a delcicious and responsibly portioned barrel of joy! Maybe I'll go back for dinner before I leave town? Haha love this place !

Amazing tortillas and carnitas!. As you walk in, you will see gals making homemade tortillas and they are amazing! Carnitas were melt in your mouth delicious too! Unfortunately, they shrimp enchiladas were really bad. No taste at all. So stick with their pride and joy - carnitas and tortillas

I like this place because of the food. I had a combination with a beef enchilada, stuffed pepper, rice and beans. Tasted great. Unfortunately there were some downsides. The staff really didn't want to be there - our chips and salsa was literally thrown on the table. And the chips were literally crumbs (thrown once too often?). All in all an OK place, made better by the margarita specials.

A must visit.... Old Town has some of the best tortillas I've ever had (both corn and flour), made fresh in the front of the restaurant and served piping hot. The Chile Verde was delicioso and the Carnitas are out of this world.

This is a place I will visit every time I am in San Diego.

Home of the world's best fish taco.  Says who?  Says ME. I ordered a 3-Item Combo consisting of a Chicken Enchilada, Fish Taco and Chile Relleno.  I then proceeded to eat an entire basket of chips and drink a Raspberry Margarita. Therefore, I was full four bites into my dinner entree.  But, guess what?  I finished the plate because it was so f**king good.  Story of my life. The mariachis were awesome AND had a great sense of humor.  They serenaded my soon-to-be 23-year old male cousin with a quince song.  Gracias, amigos. The Fun Junkie See Older Posts... From the window you can see several lovely senoritas making fresh tortillas – a thin disk of unleavened bread made from wheat flour, masa, or corn and baked on a hot surface. This was both entertaining and a guarantee that we were served freshly made hot tortillas and not store-bought inventory. Always a bonus!

Pat, pat, pat, pat, pat.  Hear the sound of handmade tortillas  being made.  The fresh dough patted back-and-forth by the artisan  tortilla makers in the window of Old Town Mexican Cafe.  Customers buzz in and out, waiters bustling about, and a football game on the bar televisions. This is the restaurant in San Diego , California I have been meaning to write about for quit some time.  I have frequented Old Town going back to childhood, including family vacations, school field trips, and Boy Scout outings to the missions.  This is the home of the first Spanish settlement in California, making it the origins and birthplace of the state.  This is a must do to gain a historic and contemporary understanding of the state and its culture, including missions, state parks, museums, eateries, shopping, the historic cemetery, activities, a " haunted " home, and more.   *I would not say the Whaley House is haunted...alth

They were making tortillas from scratch and our tacos tasted good. The kids also had a great time choosing from the kids menu. I wouldn't say it's the best mexican I have had but it was decent for the area.

We got the carnitas plate and the rolled potato rolls. The food was pretty solid but there was no hot sauce and it wasn't super flavorful. The tortillas, however, is phenomenal. Sooo fresh and delicious.

Had a fabulous spicy margarita while we waited for a table. Server made excellent recommendations, & even advised us when he thought we would be ordering too much food. Enjoyed the chips & salsa as well. Definitely recommend & would love to try breakfast, too.

It’s an alright place to eat. The staff were super friendly and helpful. A joyful wait staff during the lunch hour we visited. The food was good. The chips are not too my liking, but they were crisp. Also, they were not greasy, but they seemed factory made, which is not of the highest grade at a typical Mexican restaurant in the area. The tacos were delicious, fajitas were delicious and the chicken mole amazingly delicious. Great food. The tables were, unfortunately, on the dirty side. The floors were disgusting. If they cleaned to a higher standard and refreshed the furnishings - it would be significantly better restaurant- good to great.

The food was amazing here!! To start, the chips and salsa were fantastic! The salsa was almost my favorite part of the meal. Then, we ordered two virgin strawberry daiquiris, which were delicious. They came with an orange slice and a maraschino cherry on top, as well as whipped cream. For food, we ordered a side of rolled beef tacos, and 5 street tacos. They tasted so good, and with the sour cream and guacamole from the rolled tacos, we were able to greatly improve the street tacos, which originally only had meat, onions, and cilantro on them. Overall, everything was delicious, and I would highly recommend going here!! Side note: the bathrooms are extremely clean. and nice.

You could tell how great a Mexican restaurant is by the authenticity of the tortillas that they make by hand! The food is delicious great seasonings and spices! Chips and salsa, authentic, homemade chips! I had to Krispy Carnitas off the hook. Delicious!

This could be my favorite Mexican restaurant in all of California. I love their tacos where they put ground beef in and then toothpicks and then deep fry them to make them crispy. Their enchilada sauce is the most authentic. I’ve tasted in the states. The Mezcal margarita was fantastic and ask for their special habanero sauce for the chips, great habanero, flavor, and hot, but not too hot. Update, I came back and tried the huevos con chorizo, and it is the best chorizo egg dish I’ve had in my entire life, and I order this everywhere I go!

A quick walk from the hotel got us to Old Town Mexican cafe and it definitely was worth the walk in a bit of hot sun out here in San Diego. If we were to wait for a seat it would have been a good 10-15 minutes and instead we grabbed a couple of stools at the bar. The tender/server at the bar was pretty friendly and as well told us about the most popular options and what would go well with the options that we chose. We were welcomed with a basket of chips and some amazing salsa that came along with it. Got down to me ordering a Fish and a Shrimp taco while wifey got a shredded beef and a fish taco along with a side of beans and nacho garnish ( guac and sour cream) . Simply delicious and finger licking good is what we would sum these up. The fish in the tacos was a slightly bit more battered than we’d thought though the end result was next to empty plates that bore ample testimony to how deliciously good the food was. Shredded beef taco was great as well and tasted amazing. Shrimp taco with the shredded cabbage tomato etc had its own peculiar taste and we’d definitely be ordering that the next time as well. Great experience , amazing vibe and a for sure goto place if you happen to be around!!!

Short but sweet...always busy, but there's a reason, so be patient. It's worth the wait. I wanted street tacos (the 5 platter), and honestly, I'm still angry. With me. Because I only ordered two of them as Adobada...shame on me because those were the two best tacos this year! Enjoy!
