Review Fujiya Japanese Garden - San Antonio

Emily Neuman
This is one of my favorite places to visit in San Antonio. It is free to the public and so beautiful. It’s small but great for the whole family. There are stairs so probably not the best for people with major mobility issues but I do think there are areas that would be handicap accessible. It’s probably about a 1/4 mile hike. Perfect spot to enjoy and good location close to the airport, pearl, and zoo. You can also take some amazing pictures in this beautifully landscape haven.

Very pretty location. It looks like people use it for photo shoots. It's small and doesn't take long to walk the whole thing. There is no entry fee, so it makes a nice place to stroll and relax. It is not really good for people who need walking assistance or have wheelchairs. You can only get to some of it without climbing stairs.

It was SO beautiful. If anyone ever has a chance to go walking thru here they should. They keep the area well kept, walkways clean and clear of rubbish. There are koi of varying colors, plants and flowers galore, a waterfall, and plenty of areas set up to take pics. Can't wait to go back.

This was a beautiful place to visit. Definitely loved by all of my family. It was rainy the day we visited but still we enjoyed it very much. There's a small shop to grab some souvenirs or Popsicles and coffee. Sweet workers.

This place is so beautiful! We went on a day that was a bit overcast, which was just fine. It wasn't too busy, either. There are koi fish in the ponds and we even saw a turtle once. It was also free, so that's another good thing about the gardens.

My sisters came and visited me here and wanted to take in some of the sights. I recommend coming early to avoid crowds, parking issue's and summer heat. The park is partialy handicap accessible bucause not all levels are accessible and several ramps are steep. It is very beautiful and several places for picture taking

Beautiful. This was such a lovely experience. Amazing to see such a well kept garden. The fish and turtles were super cute. Such a lovely quiet place to clear your head. I'm guessing it's the shop there but it was so very sweet of them to keep the hot weather in mind. They had a container of cold water outside for the guests. It was just a great sight.

Beautiful place to visit and just relax for a while. Parking lot is very small we had to park down the hill a little. They do have a small restaurant and also a grab & go for coffee-tea or other drinks. Highly recommend a visit.

Fun little garden with a super short trail up to a tiny waterfall. Plenty of fish and turtles in the water, if you enjoy nature. About 45 minutes is sufficient to see everything this place has to offer. Although parts of the garden have ramps not all parts of the trail are easily accessible. If you’re walking with older members of the family make sure they are careful climbing up and down the stairs that are available, as these are often not even. The parking right next to the entrance of the garden was quite busy. However, there is usually plenty of parking available in the parking lot further downhill. Went during a hot summer weekend and had no issues. Although parts of the trail get busy they clear up if you’re able to wait a few minutes. Note: The area close to the waterfall is quite busy at all times with people taking photographs, especially if the garden is packed. Would definitely recommend visiting the garden if you’re a tourist passing through San Antonio, looking for a free activity with gorgeous views.

Beautiful park with free entry. The bottom walkway is wheelchair accessible! Lots of fish to see.

TeddyBear and I had a great experience at the Tea Garden today. We went at a perfect time of the day and the weather was not too hot and a storm was coming in. We walked all the way around the garden and met all kinds of interesting people. Definitely a good place to relax and look around.

It took us us about 30 minutes to visit. Impression is that either it should be expanded to be multicultural or redone with more Japanese influence. It is worth a quick visit. The rocky design would make me rename the place.

One of the very beautiful hidden gems here in San Antonio, Texas. I came here back in February 9, 2023. Hadn't been here in a couple of years. I absolutely love this place. It's very peaceful and beautiful here. Perfect place to bring family and friends.

I absolutely fell in love with this place. So peaceful and serene very early in the morning. We know it gets busy there, so we got there at 8am. It's much cooler at that time and you can go slowly up the stairs. I would visit this place again.

Though map says Japanese garden, but the main entrance gate says Chinese garden. Nice place to spend 30 - 45 min with nature. This is closer to downtown where river walk and Alamo plaza is located. Though we were hoping for some variety of teas to taste, but the cafe was offering only known tea flavours.

It's a little piece of Heaven on earth. With beautiful ponds filled with Koi fish and gorgeous water fall, you will love the peace you feel. The flowers and architecture make a fantastic backdrop for photographers. It's an Oasis you don't want to miss out on.

Always love coming here. It is so beautiful! The fish are nice to see.

I had moderate expectations and was blown away. The view after cresting the entry garden is breathtaking. A lovely place and a required visit.

Free Free Free did I say FREE yes that is what it cost to participate and Appreciate all that the San Antonio Japanese Tea Garden have to offer each and every day of the year. Come and spend the hours they are open and climb down to it’s bottom and imagine yourself in Japan and not have to purchase a ticket to travel back to a time when it was more than likely just a quarry waiting for history to become a reality in one’s pure and endless immigration.

Great service and Great food. Ordered Sansai Udon, hit the spot. It was just what I was craving. The only reason I did not give this place a better rating is the very limited child's menu.

I’ll start by saying the interior of this restaurant is nothing short of majestic. I was in awe of the obvious pride they’ve taken in paying homage to their heritage and the elegance of the entryway. The staff is friendly and the whole environment just made me feel comfortable and relaxed. I know it sounds dramatic but I’m rarely astounded when I walk into a restaurant, especially one which looks a bit questionable from the parking lot lol.

That being said, the food was good but nothing spectacular. I had a spicy tuna roll which was good. The miso soup was actually delicious which was a surprisingly treat as it is rarely noteworthy at most places. The chicken teriyaki was good and not smothered in sauce but a little over cooked. And I’m sorry to say, but I’d rate the gyoza in the bottom 50 percent.

Overall, I think I’ll go back and give some other items on their large menu a chance. It’s worth it for the welcoming and breathtaking ambiance.

Sushi was simply "ok" at this establishment. Unfortunately long prep time prior to our food being delivered. Overall ambiance and decor of Fujiyama is phenomenal. Staff is courteous and pricing is midrange.

Absolutely awful! Looked at all the reviews and was excited to try it. But it was a major let down! If you go just stick with the sushi menu. It's subpar.

The staff were all very nice and the atmosphere wasn't bad. But -- the food was awful, not sure how on earth they got such good reviews. I would not go back.
Rita Tucker
we were seated the "traditional" way, on the floor. a very fun, interesting experience. the food was delicious, fresh and presented beautifully!

Very Good Sushi and Sushi Rolls. 3$ Happy Hour Monday-Thursday till 6:30 is a killer deal! This is my second time here during my 6 week business trip and I will be back for a third time.

This place is by far my favorite sushi place and probably favorite restaurant here. I have been coming here for years and have never been disappointed. I love the atmosphere at night in the bar/sushi bar area and the service is always exceptional. If you are going you must eat sushi and I highly recommend the crunch roll...it'my number one

Best in SA. I have been a patron here for decades, and there are few other places in town that can match or beat the sushi bar service or quality of food. Junko is awesome, the fish and shellfish are always of highest quality. The chefs here remember how you like certain things and prepare your orders to that detail. Service can be iffy unless you sit at the bar, and they have a steady business that keeps the tables turning, but there are those nights when not a seat can be found. Wednesdays, Thursdays are the best days for quick service, but if you see the parking lot jammed up expect a bit of a wait.

Prices are in line with SA marketplace.

Rediscovering an old favorite.. It had been a very very long time since I had eaten at Fujiya. I still remember when they were located on Fredricksberg road near the crossroads mall. This place was already good when I tried it first back in 94, I think its even better now. I had the Sushi lunch combo A. Its an excellent example of what they do best here. Sushi. The fish was fresh and just really well made nigiri. Not one crumbled as I picked them up with chopsticks (unlike other sushi joints in town). Also got to try their scallop bed and spicy tuna roll and a piece of their teriyaki steak bento. That was one flavor full and well cooked piece of steak. Service here is also excellent. Not once did I have to ask for anything. My only complaint was that the miso soup that came with the lunch specials was barely warm, Other than that I'm definitely coming back here.

Sundays are the day to go! donkatsu is delicious.

Disappointed. After reading the reviews I chose to try Fujiya. My husband and I ordered the two Bento Boxs and neither of us were pleased. Firstly, the miso soup that preceded our Bento Boxes was lukewarm and bland. Secondly, the main course items in the boxes were ordinary with one shining exception: The Tempura shrimp and vegies was excellent. For the rest, well we won't repeat those meals. The beef and chicken entree's were also lukewarm and not very interesting; we just don't like California rolls much, and these were no exception -- fake crab and avacado. If we ever decide to try Fujiya again (not likely) we'll go straight to the Sushi Bar and order primo Sushi and skip the rest.

Dim Sum Yum. We loved the dim sum so much, I can't remember what else we ordered. The dim sum can add up quickly, and the menu pricing is a little confusing, but we will definitely be back. I may return just to nosh through dim sum.

The restaurant itself seemed a bit worn and in need of a remodel, but that won't stop us from going back.

Good, solid, attentive service.

NO NO NO just kidding. Dont go here so we dont have such a long wait. Wow i have eaten at many sushi places from west coast to east coast and have never had such great food as i have here , They get their fish in fresh 3 times a week and i know for a fact that their tuna is not prefrozen like most other places they buy the whole fish and filet it ! more work but we benifit !!!! I almost hate to give a great review because it will hinder me in the long run ! tell junko hi at the sushi bar and whatever your fancy is you will enjoy . My favorite is all the salads fujia or sunamia salad . the pokke is to die for as well

Old and outdated!! Don't waste your money.

Simply Divine. My mom and I took my sister to Fujiya to celebrate her move to San Antonio; we hadn't been in ten years ourselves and hoped it would be as good as we remembered. My sister had never had Japanese food so she followed our lead so we all ended up with the Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura lunch plates. From the soup that started us out to the food regretfully left behind when we couldn't eat another bite our visit was more than satisfactory. Despite being the holiday season we weren't overwhelmed by tacky Christmas decorations, our server was both attentive and discrete, and our food was done perfectly (sweet potato and zucchini are both so easy to overcook while frying). We will most certainly be back and recommend Fujiya to all of our friends and family.

Went on a date. Had the "lovers" meal that Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw had when they filmed a movie scene there in the 70's. It was @$45 for 2. It was the saltiest, most disgusting, leathery, meat, food of my life. Everything but the last course (tempura shrimp and veg) was AWFUL! My date was embarrassed as he wanted u to have a nice experience. I felt the effects of the salt for 3 days. By the third course all we could do was take a bite. It became unbelievable how soy sauce dream he'd and overlooked everything was. I saw people behind our table at the sushi bar. The sushi looked great. If we weren't in a time crunch I would have asked to have it sent back. I felt sorry for my date.
I felt like we entered a time warp of the 70's with oniony, leathery, soy drenched kabobs, and crocks of brown (soy) brothed soup. Barf! My blood pressure went sky high that night. Don't waste your money.

Absolutely loved this place. The servers were sooo sweet and their food was very flavorful. I would recommend the Dice roll and the Tsunami salad!

Good, though a bit on the expensive side. Shrimp tempura was awesome.

Finest Japanese in town. I was one of the first employees @ Fujiya in 1971. Mama , was very particular about the recipes, and immigrated her chefs and waitresses from Japan. There were years where the quality had gotten worse, after mama passed. But yesterday, we had the famous dinner for 2 lovers, and the recipes were exactly as I remember. I saw George, one of the sons who is in house now. And a waitress I knew when I worked there in 1971. The elaborate dinner was spectacular, everything very well presented, from the tempura to the sukiyaki was first class. We were treated like royalty. We will be back soon. I highly recommend for any occasion.

Still great!. I had the mackrel and it was fantastic! Only place in town that can cook Mackrel to perfection. Others at the table ordered sushi, teryaki and tempura and everything was just as good. I love the traditional birthday song and the birthday dessert was a hit with the family.

Fuji - Yeah!. After driving to several different overly crowded with waits of 2 hours or more we just happen to pass this place on our way back to our hotel. The ambiance and decor was very Japanese in architecture and style both inside and out. The menu was ample so deciding what to eat was somewhat of a chore. I finally decided on the No.1 FUJIYA SPECIAL DINNER $15.95 which is a "medley of some of their most popular dishes. It came with CHICKEN KUSHI, BEEF TERIYAKI, TONKATSU (Pork Cutlet), SHRIMP and VEGETABLE TEMPURA and house soup. You better be hungry because it was a lot of food. The food was interesting as it was not your normal Japanese restaurant. More authentic. No hibachi tables here. Enjoy.

Wonderful RAMEN!. After reading all the great reviews this foodie decided to try the place. I was not dissapointed! The beef ramen can I just say...was the best ramen Ive had in my entire life. The freshest vegetables, tons of noodles, the beef was so tender and the best was the beef broth which was perfect by the way. I also had the Bonzai roll which was ok. The childrens plate was pretty cheap and came with TONS of food lol. My son had to take a to go box. Overall great experience. The ladies of the waitstaff wear japanese dress and are very nice. When you first walk in its like walking into a museum VERY COOL! I'm officially addicted to the BEED ramen!!!!

I come back for the sushi and tempura udon. The sushi is fresh and the udon plentiful and always rich.
Duchess_winter
Really really liked it. I got the chicken ramen soup - that was all sorts of savory goodness. It does have veggies, but they taste just like the broth. My husband got the masa rolls - they were pretty good, just not quite our thing. The salmon was cooked, not smoked, but it was still an ok roll. We finished with coffee flavored mochi - it was good and looked really cute between two equal sized mounds of cream. Our waitress was really nice and the cost for the sushi was incredibly reasonable. Some people don't like the Japanese themed atmosphere - I thought it was really neat. We're definitely heading back soon.
Amanda
Great!. I was impressed by the menu and had a hard time deciding what to try. They have a great selection of noodle dishes and sushi.
The sushi was fresh, and the price was reasonable. We tried several dishes and were very pleased with each one. They even have okonomiaki but it's not on the menu so ask your waitress!
Our waitress was great, very friendly and helpful. We will be back again and again to try the rest of the menu.

Not up to par anymore. Used to be a decent Japanese restaurant several years ago when there weren't many around town and Japanese food wasn't as popular as it is today. Now, I'm afraid, Fujiya is outdated and subpar. I think if they remodeled and updated the decor and menu it might have a chance again. As it stands today, I can't recommend it to my friends with so many better options available.

Had heard good things about this place but when i finally tried it myself I felt it was overrated and also over priced.... service was pretty good even though it was late night
but all I can say is that I haven't been back ever since...

Had the lovers lunch and think thus was a nice change of scenery. Both of us left stuffed and can't wait for our next "special" lunch. $30 with tip.

Food, service, ambiance....everything was outstanding!

Very pleased!. I love their sushi

Words cannot express the inner happiness felt after dining at Fujiya. I recommend the the tsunami salad, aji, crunch roll and shabu shabu. It's almost like being in Japan. A sushi foodie would understand what I'm referring to. Also try the Nigori Sake.
Missy
Do not be Decived by the outside of the building. The inside has a great atmosphere and the sushi and service was great!!!!

Best sushi in SA. Fujiya serves the best sushi in SA. I've dined at over a dozen sushi restaurants here and have found two that were a close second to Fujia in SA and Austin. Fujiya still stands apart. Sushi is meant to be delicate and flavorful, not robust, and the hint of each individual ingredient in the rolls are a delight to the palate. There should not be a noticeable flavor to any of the fish; there should only be a delicate sweetness to each that differs in taste from the other that distinguishes the type of seafood used. The owner and staff are amazing and very dear people.

Amazing. Had the eddie roll dice roll twin dragon roll and the fujiya roll. It was great the chef was very nice and made wonderful rolls. I will go back
Tnia
Good. Sushi was good, not great. Other menu items are good though too.
Jen
Stopped by because it was convenient and we were craving sushi. Unfortunately, it wasn't that good. The sushi was marginal, and the rice was worse. Looks like we'll be returning to our favorite place... Sushi Zushi here we come!
TxJohn
Cool look but ok food at best
Mike
Really disappointed in the food. They covered up all of my food with gravy. Our sushi was undesirable. The atmoshere is great, their food isn't.

Awesome. Fujiya is my favorite sushi restaurant, i love sitting in the japanese room on the floor and looking over the japanese garden. Very authentic and tasty
Lori
Quiet sushi place. My cousins suggested this place for dinner on Saturday night; there was no wait but the dining room was still pretty full of people. We had a dark table in the corner, which I really liked. My stomach was not so good, so I ordered the No. 1 plate, which featured cooked foods. My cousins ordered sushi, and it looked excellent, so next time, I'll order sushi. The miso soup was delicious (and refills are free! - they waiter told us), the beer was good, and the food was pretty good. My only quip: the waiter messed up my check and had to rerun my card but did not give me a void receipt, so hopefully this will not be an issue. My cousins have had him as their waiter before and chalked it up to a "bad night" for him. Hopefully, that was the case.

Fujiya. One of the best kept secrets in San Antonio. This resterante has it all great service, tradition, and excellent sushi, also very reasonably priced about $50 for two people. This is one of mine and my wifes favorite places to eat in San Antonio. My Menu normally consists of Fujia soup, egg rolls, edamame, masa rolls, and Bonzai roll. Prepare to be amazed. There is also a room that you can eat traditional Japanese style on the floor very romantic, and a must try for San Antonio dining.
