Wow! Here is the problem: All the meats look so good that you feel you have to order the two meat plate, but you can't eat that much. I ordered a ham hock, and it was the size of my head and full of meat, not just fat and bone. I ordered the chicken also, but that went home in a to-go box. the ham hock and collard greens were so good! I cannot wait to go back and try their fish. I would tell you how the chicken breast was, but my wife ate it! Said it was good, and it must have been, because she didn't even save me a bite.
Flavorful is an understatement! Magnificent, yummy, southern food made to perfection. I officially live in the wrong zip code, lol! I would eat here every single day if I could... Smothered steak, fried chicken, Ox-tails!! Fried pork chops!! Get up and find your way to this place.. Yummy! I will return
Food like Mama's. I was in San Antonio the first week in May to visit family, and was taken to this spot for lunch. Wow what a treat, great old fashioned home type cooking like my Mother used to make. This is the real deal, I immersed myself in a large plate of Smothered Pork Chops, Collard Greens, Black-Eyed Peas, Green Beans, and a Corn Muffin. This is the best down home cooking I've had in many years.. Can't wait for my next trip to SA to relive this experience.
I'm from Dallas and I been living in satx for a year and I love homemade soul food. This food is so good I feel I'll be going weekly.
We love it,. My hubby and I try to make it here at least 1-2 times a month. We drive in from Poteet and we LOVE it! Reminds me of my Granny's cooking. Just makes you happy walking in the door. The German chocolate cake is wonderful. Actually, I have never had anything bad! Try it! You can't go wrong.
If you are like me, you prefer the hole-in-the wall restaurants that are like hidden gems. This place is in my top 5 for San Antonio favorites. Doesnt look like much from the outside but assoon as you walk in, the smell of rich soul food smacks you right in the nose. Be prepared for delicious home cooking and over-friendly service. You truly feel likes Mrs G opened up her home and made you a traditional soul food meal. Give it a try...you will be back.
Great comfort food! Fried Chicken, smothered steak and all other entrees and sides are very flavorful. Save room for dessert, you won't be disappointed.
This has to be on my top 10 favorite restaurants in San Antonio. Highly recommend the catfish, smothered pork chops, & fried or baked chicken. Love the banana wafer pudding. I'm starting to salivate just thinking about it!
The fried chicken was a perfect mixture of juicy tender meat with a flavorful crispy skin! I could have eaten ten of them! The cornbread was great and while the corn was not spectacular, the warm atmosphere and friendly conversation was all I needed. This place is a true SA institution.
Pretty good.. I go to this spot every now and then. Some of the servers try to skimp you out of a proper serving. Honey with the money you have to pay demand that they put more. Get your money's worth. Your stomach will thank you.
Just forget what you're planning for lunch and get over here. I randomly passed this place while running errands on a very hungry stomach and, let me tell you, this is a hit! The fried chicken wowed me from the very first bite, the cornbread is good, the rice woth gravy was fantastic, and the Mac and cheese was everything I expected. I tore into my delicious meal too quickly to stop and take a decent photo! They make their own vinegar hot sauce from peppers that Mr. G pickled before he passed and it's wonderful! I will absolutely be back here and will he bringing folks with me. Well done, y'all!
I suppose one should not expect the food to be warm twenty minutes before closing on a Friday evening. Nevertheless, the food tasted good. My husband loved the meatloaf and gumbo.
Now this is some amazing soul food hidden in the middle of San Antonio! Smothered steak, phenomenal fried chicken, turkey and dressing, green beans, mashed taters, and the greens? *drool* Get there before they run out! (Seriously. They run out.)
Still, the best Soul Food in San Antonio. Smothered pork chops, fried chicken, smothered chicken, etc.,etc. They have it all and kool aid to boot. Prices have rinsen a little over the years but still worth it.

Best place in town for soul food! Highly rated by local and national press. San Antonio Express news, USA Today and myself love this place for its congenial owner Mr. G. and his great home style cooking served up buffet style... His chicken, available baked broiled or fried is to die for!
Great food. Great customer service. Sorry to hear that they are closing at the end of July.
I am simultaneously blown away by this restaurant's offerings, and disappointed that my local friends hadn't brought me here earlier. Roasted chicken, greens, stewed cabbage, and Mac & cheese were all awesome. So in and get anything... it's all great!
Absolutely delicious! The meat loaf was great, the veggies tasty, the mashed potatoes smooth as silk and the gravy some of the best I have had. And the fried chicken, the fried chicken was crispy, moist, flavorful and just all around superb. This little place is a gem with friendly people and amazing cooking.
Ones of my favorite spots too eat..I live in helotes and drive the 30 minutes just for the smothered pork chops, fresh greens and delicious chocolate cake..🤗
Wow! Wow! The food, the flavor, the simplicity. There is no other word that would fit better than perfection! Everything was great, just like I remember 8 years ago. While the menu has changed the standard to greatness in food hasn't. I highly recommend to anyone!
