Very excited one of my favorite chefs in the city finally opened his own place...love the atmosphere, and loved the food. Crispy lentils, pimento, braised greens, risotto, chicken, cornbread were all on point we will definitely be back.

We recently had such a great experience here--a peaceful, cozy ambiance and the food was outstanding! Service was on point and we can't wait to go back. Every dish we ordered was flavorful and perfectly prepared. The happy hour cocktails were fab. It's a small little place (make reservations if possible) & that is part of the charm! We'll be back soon!

Delicious food! I have been wanting to try this place out for quite some time and luckily was able to make reservations for Valentine's Day. Started off with their Cast Iron Buttermilk Cornbread with Ranch Butter as an appetizer, and was extremely pleased with the layers of flavor. For my main, as suggested by multiple reviews here I had to try out their Smoke Roasted Chicken...which sure did live up to the hype! Probably the most flavorful chicken I have ever had, so if you're a lover of chicken, definitely get this dish at some point. We also had their Sweet Potato Mash and Spicy Braised Tomato Chickpeas. The Sweet Potato Mash was great! However, the Chickpeas left something to desire as we felt they were slightly overcooked and lacked a bit of seasoning unfortunately. Regardless, their customer service saves this review from being just a standard 3 star as they were friendly and attentive the whole service despite it being towards the end of the night. Overall, I'd love to give this place another whirl in the future to try out their many other dishes. Bonus Points because their menu is seasonal!

Great experience at the neighborhood gem. Small menu with a beautiful selection of chef prepared cuisine. Bar menu drinks that taste as good as they sound and service to match. Feels great supporting local!!!

Periphery is a new restaurant in Monte Vista that was opened just about a month ago by chef Mark Weaver of Tre Trattoria. Tre is one of my San Antonio faves, so when I saw Periphery pop up on Yelp and browsed the menu, I knew I had to pay a visit. And what better occasion than for dinner on the 7th anniversary of my 21st birthday?! The restaurant has a clean and modern vibe, and is nice without being stuffy. It's small, so be sure to call ahead for a reservation as they do book up. Patio seating is typically more available, but they do not have any heat lamps, so it can get a little chilly. We arrived during happy hour so beers and wines were half off. The service was stellar and our waiter made some great recommendations on appetizers and entrees. The entrees max out at $18 so it's not too highly priced, but they are on the smaller side and all the sides are a la carte. My friends and I decided to share a few dishes and everything was delicious! Polenta crusted pimento cheese with bacon jam - 8 | My favorite item of the night. This appetizer was small but it was the perfect harmony of flavors. It came with a side of Ritz crackers, which seemed oddly basic, but it worked! Get this!!! We were also torn and wanted to try the crispy lentil appetizer, which came highly recommended -- next time! Crushed kale, green goddess, bottarga, pangratto - 9 | I'm always a sucker for kale salads and this one was definitely a winner. The green goddess dressing is what sealed the deal. I have no idea what that stuff is. Nor do I know what bottarga or pangratto are. But they're delicious, so don't question it, just order it! Sweet potato and coconut bisque - 7 | I love sweet potato and coconut and although those base flavors were definitely present in this bisque, there was a very strong onion taste and something that left a sharp, almost burning taste in the back of your throat. This bisque will definitely awaken your tastebuds, but I don't think I'd order it again. It was also fairly small and not as friendly for sharing. Heirloom bean and carnaroli rice "risotto" - 13 | This was the one entree that I could have skipped. It was described as a fancy twist on rice and beans, but it wasn't too memorable and the presentation left much to be desired. Definitely wasn't bad by any means, but I feel like there were definitely more interesting menu items that I would have rather tried, and that would have been more worth the price. Grilled hangar steak with broccoli salsa verde and ahi amarillo mayo - 18 | The steak came out medium rare, as we ordered it. It was seasoned well and very tender, and the salsa verde made it a bit more interesting with an edgy vinegary flavor profile. Chicken liver bolognese with house cavatelli, cippollini and parm - 14 | I really enjoyed the flavor of this dish and I think it was mild enough that someone weary of organ meat wouldn't have a problem trying it. The pasta was more al dente than I would have liked though, but that may have been an intentional style of cooking. Overall, still good and decently portioned for the price. Peanut butter pound cake with poached pear salsa and salted caramel - 7 | They made it easy for us with just one dessert option, and it was delicious! You'd think that pound cake is heavy enough and adding peanut butter would make it overwhelming, but it was still very delicate and the pears lightened it up even more. The dessert was definitely on the smaller side though, so if you're sharing, you may want to order a couple. Overall, for the four of us, after splitting the bill, we each only owed $20-something. Not bad for being able to try all these dishes! Perimeter is a great addition to the San Antonio food scene and I hope its presence encourages even more new restaurants like it to pop up too!

The chef from Tre left Jason Dady's wing and opened his own restaurant, and he is showcasing his best work so far. Periphery is smallish, do reserve, but the atmosphere and decoration is perfect for a romantic dinner with a small town hipster vibe. Each plate was a piece of art, the crusted fried pimento cheese was greatly complemented by the bacon jam (seriously! Bacon jam), we had the blue cheese risotto, the chicken liver bolognese on home made pasta, the smoked chicken and shared a pea side; each entree extremely flavorful, but true Texans might find the portions a bit small, except for the chicken. So the restaurant's strategy is to offer a refined experience yet you can have the "Texan size" if you take the last selection out of each section, appetizer, main and dessert. The chicken is just outstanding in flavor and texture and seasoning, and the sweet sauce accompanied it perfectly, but it was odd that there was no veggies or starches with it, you need to get sides. The blue cheese dessert was great but will take some out of their comfort zone. So in all, a thoroughly modern and masterful execution.

Thank you restaurant week for showing us this gem! Periphery is a tiny little place, so please make reservations. The food is tremendous. The flavors both bold and subtle blend to make a symphony for your taste buds. I highly recommend their wine pairing. I have tried wine/food pairings at many places and not a one of them have hit it as spot on as Periphery. I am not a sweet wine girl, and when they paired a Riesling with my starter I was not enthusiastic... Until... My starter was pimento cheese, I took a sip of the Riesling and it wasn't sweet!!! This confused me so I are a cracker and tried the Riesling again. Guess what... It WAS sweet, but the pairing of that wine with that starter made all the difference. The service is wonderful... I am not exactly sure who our waiter was because they ALL took great care of us and all had a great sense of humor. We will definitely be coming back.

My husband and I had dinner here on Valentine’s and really enjoyed ourselves. It’s a casual, small space with a little bar area and really good food. The standouts were the warm dates with smoked gouda, the cast iron cornbread with delicious ranch butter, and the smoke roasted chicken which was absolutely divine! They had a 15 year old Pappy Van Winkle bourbon that my husband had to have a glass of and was in heaven over. Good times!

Excellent food and excellent service. Our server was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. I enjoyed the atmosphere: very intimate and cozy with uplifting music that didn’t overpower table discussions. The chicken lived up to its hype, it is delicious!!

While the menu is small and select, the dishes are so creative and can be prepared to meet specific needs. Loved the Walnut salad, crispy lentils and dessert! Atmosphere is cozy, intimate and warm. Service is excellent too.

Great meal, and actually quite reasonable. $75 plus tip for an appetizer, two entrees, a side to share, glass of wine and two coffees. Very small restaurant, I think 10 tables but we walked up on a Saturday at 6:30pm and one reservation hadn’t showed so we got a table immediately. Great service also, a nice ambience in a quiet neighborhood. Worth visiting.
