Review Beto's Alt-mex - San Antonio

Bryan Smith
I had heard about the place from someone who used to live in the area... I was on the verge of hangry and didn't want to go anywhere else!! Fortunately we were seated ASAP. (In town for a short vacation) no wait on this Fri night... If you haven't been here it's worth waiting at least one time. There are many Mexican food spots in this area from checking the map but do yourself a favor - Go here - enjoy the atmosphere and food. The drinks looked to quench thirst... Dry January for me ... The empanadas are the bomb (if you like seasoning and I'm not talking salt and pepper "spices") I had the mouthwatering chicken empanada, also a pork Verde empanadas... And a chicken taco of some sort. Holy food coma it was tasty! The Peruvian rice and beans was a stellar compliment as I cured my starving with a finale ... The banana pecan leche empanada... All was very plentiful and filling. Get in here and get filled on the offers they provide!!!! Only knock was I don't carry much cash. No biggie. Cash discount... But I get it on the card game .. The girls had a blast afterwards when I promised when my daughters spotted the play area in the back. All in all it was a fantastic experience! Respectfully, Bryan - Oklahoma City

Beto’s Alt-Mex! New favorite brunch spot! Cute authentic decor and a seat yourself option. The Horchata was delicious. We ordered Beto’s Plates and some Pozole, with the option to have it as an appetizer. The pozole was so flavorful and hearty, tender chunks of pork, generous hominy. The empanadas were really good and the quesadillas were stuffed! Due to the large portions, this meal was literally breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We’ll be back to try out the other offerings…oh…and, Y’all…there’s a DRIVE-THRU!

Delicious empanadas, breakfast is no longer served on the weekends 😒. Artsy feel inside, patio is really nice. Live band on Saturday & Sunday. ☺️ Tequila flights, Happy hour all day Sunday. On point service and friendly staff. Limited parking in front, lots of parking in back.

Decent food and service. Try the chicken empanadas! The nachos were okay, but a bit too dry for my liking. The fish tacos were mediocre so i would avoid those. The service was fine. The location isn’t amazing though.

Mexican cuisine in SATX has been redeemed, all hail the delightful staff and outstanding food being offered at Beto's. Salsa - they offer a red, green and diablo, all cooked and served warm. No easy feat in the salsa game, but they've got it down pat. Tacos de calle - Street tacos, check. While they don't offer my favorite, barbacoa, the carne asada was quite near perfection in taste and portion size. Sides - a generous portion of charro beans, which are normally a cheap after thought...not here. They actually season them and add a little imagination, add a little salsa and we'll let's just say your tongue gets real happy and your taste buds start the happy dance. Finally there's the blistered jalapeño that just makes you thank the food Gods for directing you here. In the midst of a plethora of so-so Mexican restaurants that have forgotten their mission, this place is a Gem. I might add that the decor alone is worth the trip. The take-out containers won't soak your seats and reminds you that someone cares about your experience. I was given a tour of the patio, because, well my Host said 'No, no, you have to see it', more than enough encouragement for me!

Five stars for the empanadas alone! I was very pleased with the entire meal, but the empanada really stood out to me. Flaky yet tender crust, and the filling was super flavorful. The grilled fish taco was great also, and it was really nice to have a hand made tortilla. Very impressed, and my coworkers and I plan on returning.

I came to Beto's for their famous fish taco, and was not disappointed. It's got a perfect balance of crispy warm fish to a cool tangy slaw, all wrapped in a tortilla and delicious. It didn't even need any of the provided salsa. I also tried the chicken poblano empanada, and that was probably my favorite. Super crispy buttery pastry around a chicken filling that reminded me of chicken pot pie, but with a hint of spice and acid to balance out the richness. Really good.

I googled “Michelada” close by and this restaurant popped up. Given that I live in the area, I decided to stop by. I wish I had known about this place sooner!!! What a treat! The michelada was Amazing and I’m a pretty tough miche critic. The owner was on the floor and was extremely helpful as well as my waitress. He recommended their strawberry infused Jalapeño margarita (I was again skeptical on how this could taste). It actually tasted like a strawberry lemonade!! 🤤 Dangerous, I know. My meal consisted of the fish taco plate, a cup of pozole… perfect pozole btw. And a cup of the fideos and corn. Needless to say, I will most def be returning. Their open back patio is the perfect setting to bring and treat clientele.

Great atmosphere and great food. Love the authenticity of everything and the flavor & freshness of it all down to the colorful drinks. But there ks a bit of a wait so don't go here starving lol. I'd definitely come again and leave room for dessert this next time.

Absolutely amazing food! In town visiting and Beto's seemed like a good choice, and we were definitely right about that! The banana and pecan empanada is one of the best things I have ever tasted.

Good food and great atmosphere. A great place for a date. Looking forward to exploring the menu. I got the recommended items which were all tasty.

Came here on a pretty warm evening and wad delighted to have been sat inside although the outdoor seating is sooooo cute! Our waitress was great! Quickly served us waters and had patience while my husband took forever to decide what he wanted (he wanted it all). We both settled on ordering a create our own combo meal. I picked the chicken poblano empanada and the grilled fish taco. Both were soooo big that I had to take half my food home. The taco came with so much grilled fish which I appreciated. A side of ranchero beans and rice were included and honestly I could have also just eaten those sides by themselves. Highly recommend and will return! 5/5 customer service 5/5 food quality 5/5 recommend

I've been to Beto's multiple times, and have never been disappointed with their wonderfully flaky empanadas and other dishes! If you opt for a "plate," you can select from many of their popular items, so you can try a bit of everything. My personal favorite is the spinach, cheese, and potato empanada, but the fish tacos are also great. On a nice day, their outdoor seating is cozy, especially when there's live music. However, it can get a bit crowded during peak times, so keep that in mind if you wanted something more "low-key." I gave 4 stars instead of 5 stars because sometimes the service is lacking when there are lots of customers. I believe I got a small mix up in some orders a couple of times, but the food was yummy anyways, so I didn't mind.

Eating their street tacos gave me a flashback to my childhood from back in LA. Great great flavor! I just wish they weren't so tiny. Enough to appease a hungry stomach but I needed a little bit more. Fantastic staff though, nice atmosphere. Very laid back.

Derrick makes the BEST Carne Asada Fries!!! I'm am sooooo blown away! Beto's took them off the menu years back, but this restaurant goes out of its way to please it's customers and will make them upon request. I called to ask Chris, the owner, if he could make them, but he wasn't at the restaurant. Derrick asked me if he could put his own special twist on the fries since he wasn't familiar with exactly how they were made on the old menu. I agreed and am soooo thankful that I did. Him offering to do that was so kind. I couldn't believe how much work he put into this one order for me. From the first bite to the last, it was pure bliss. Now let me tell you, I have tried Carne Asada fries all over the United States (Cali used to be my favorite place, but not anymore) and consider myself a major foodie. These were the best carne asada fries that I've EVER had. It was such a perfect balance of flavors! Thank you Derrick for going out of your way for me. You have set the bar to an unreachable level! (The picture just doesn't do them the justice they deserve, but still look AMAZING in the picture)

Al Pastor & Fish tacos made on scratch tortilla! Don't sleep on food in weird places in town. The street corn & charro beans quite tasty. The Salas were amazing, grab the green for the fish and houses salsa was down right drinkable. Definitely adding this to the redo list!
Lori Bassham Myers
Ten stars! The food is amazing. I started with a watermelon margarita. We had the guacamole and queso for appetizers. My dinner was the calabacita con puerca empanadas and the vegetable tacos. Absolutely delicious. Our waiter Luis was fantastic. I cannot recommend this place highly enough!
Kenny George Jr.
We are from Houston and I loved my meal got the beef and red chilli empanada with the El pastor taco which is hands down best one I have ever had ever. Now reason they are not getting a 5 is my wife's fish taco was not up to par very dry and fishy tasting. But all in all services was good and my food was good. Need one in H-town.

Found Beto’s while looking for some triple d spots in San Antonio. This place was on point. Had the 3 item combo with fish taco, taco al pastor, and poblano chicken empanada. So much food and very tasty. A must stop for Triple D’ers and anyone looking for that something different.
Cristina Green
This was our second time there and this time my Hubby and I tried the meat empanadas: one beef, one chicken fajita, & one chicken mole and one carne asada quesadilla. They were amazing-sooo much flavor! And for dessert we chose to share a Banana Dulce de Leche with pecans Empanada. OMGOSH- this was to die for! Absolutely decadent! The service was excellent and will definitely come back for more!

One of our very favorite places to go! Delicious food, great atmosphere for a relaxing, fun family meal and the best service anywhere. Crystal is the best!!!
Avri Richmond Haggerty
The chicken poblano empanada was the best! Tasty sangria, chicken mole empanada and the grilled fish taco rounded out my night. I would recommend if you're in the area.
Alleigh Stewart
The service was great. The atmosphere was relaxed. I loved being able to have my pooch with me on the patio; but above all the food was worth the drive from Houston.
Anne Messbarger-Eguia
The food at Betos's is fantastic! I love the White Nachos and the Chalupa Cabra- featured in Diners Dives and Drive-ins. Save room for dessert because the Leche Quemada empanadas are amazing! This is a great family-friendly place with plenty of room for the kids to run around, a big screen TV to watch a Spurs game and great live music at least three nights a week.
Kenny Marrs
No refills; never asked. No salad dressing, but waiter never checked after food was delivered. Horrible service from the dude with the weird beard.
Isabelle Salazar
First time here today and everything was delicious! I tried the fish tacos (1 grilled, 1 fried) with roasted corn, and rice and I enjoyed every bite. Customer service was terrific as well! Can’t wait to go back and try something different. Definitely recommend!
Robbie Macias
It's really no secret how amazing the food is. For those who are new to SA and need a place to tasty drinks, yummy food, and a place to relax. Well, Beto's the place to be.

I walked into this place not knowing what to expect... All I know is, Guy Fieri knows good food. I saw this place on an episode of Diners, Drive-Inns, & Dives & decided to try it out. Excellent food, great customer service, & all around great place. Keith was our server & provided perfect customer service skills! I'll definitely be back for more great meals in the future!
Mary Rini
Buttery, Flaky Empanadas, that had the warmth of homemade food. Loved the Tomatillo sauce. The food was fresh. Great service, my waiter, Marcus, was very gracious and attentive. Wonderful!
Kristie Winters Dendy
Really love the food. The chicken and tomatillo empanada was great. The horchata is the best I've ever tasted. Try this place, and don't miss the roasted corn!

Was visiting from Wisconsin and had seen Beto's on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives, so we decided to check it out. Our waitress was from Wisconsin also and was the nicest person ever. I had the chicken empanada and it was AWESOME!! After our meal our waitress surprised us with an entire plateful of a variety of dessert empanadas. They were all so delicious! I will definitely go to Beto's again next time I am in Texas!. Food 5 stars, Service 5 stars!

I arranged to meet a friend at Beto's mid afternoon because I knew it would be quiet enough to have a conversation. She's new to San Antonio and took my advice about Beto's wonderful food. To my surprise she ordered the fish taco with the question to our server, "Are your fish taco's really the best in SA?" Well, she agreed they were. I just got my usual guava cream cheese empanada, my treat every time I'm in that area of town. Beto's rocks!!!

Okay, I’m a foodie. The fact that I ate a late lunch/ early dinner here yesterday, and returned today speaks volumes! Yesterday I enjoyed the three piece combo platter with the La Pastor and fish tacos, and the chicken jalapeño empanada. The winner was the savory and well spiced Pastor; though the soft and flavorful fish tacos with slaw were lovely. The delicate pasteri-ed chicken empanadas were lovely, although I salased them up, The pinto beans were well cooked and flavorful, the rice was unsurprising. The dessert of banana Letche and pecan empanada was special. Having had a great meal yesterday, I returned today for the guacamole,!jicama salad, and black bean soup. The guacamole was flavorful and both smooth and chunky on a bed of shredded lettuce, the chips crisp and non greasy with a warm salsa. The black bean soup was smoky and creamy with moderate heat- spectacular— served with forgettable corn bread chunks. The dressing on the jicama salad was nice, but it seemed that there was overmuch lettuce to balance the toppings of jicama, mandarin and onion. So if feeling carnivorous go for the Pastor and fish tacos. If trying for herbivore get the guacamole and bean soup, and skip the jicama salad. Yummy food that warranted two visits within 24 hours.

Haven’t been here in awhile but yesterday’s visit for lunch was amazing! Newly redecorated and updated but more importantly the food was outstanding- give it a try soon.

Great food AND service<br/><br/>Not realizing they were scheduled to close at 9:00, we arrived at 8:55... The staff was courteous and seemed genuinely happy to seat and serve us. (There were still a couple of tables occupied.) The ceviche was excellent. The margaritas were top notch. Our mix of fish, beef and chicken tacos were all outstanding. We topped it off with their signature banana/Mexican caramel empanada. A perfect ending to our San Antonio visit.
Passepartout-Too-Too
It had a good texture, was on an excellent tortilla with slaw and cilantro (but not too much) and topped with a creamy poblano sauce. It's served with a small ramekin of chimichurri, in case you think the lily needs gilding. I see from this meal why people get so excited about fish tacos.
Scott
If you're a fish taco lover this is the place. Voted number one fish tacos in San Antonio. The empanadas are fantastic too. Great crust. I'll be back.<br/>
Andrew
Easy to get to with friendly staff. Empanadas are great and the red chile with beef one was excellent. Taco pastor also good. Chips were from a bag and so may have been the cheese dip. Inside music was an older gentleman at the keyboard which my kids loved, especially when he play Charlie Brown. Great place overall.
Juan Who Knows...
Good food and a fun atmosphere.<br/><br/>Service - ehh, not great but not bad. Could use a little work.<br/><br/>Beer - Let me suggest more selections on draught and faster refills.<br/><br/>OTW Beto is doing great job.<br/><br/>And don't forget the desert empanadas...
Alex Mihut
It is our first time here and we really enjoyed it. The food is excellent, the mojito and margarita (what we had) good enough to get seconds :) ... The staff was friendly and service was quick. Everything you can wish for. We will definitely be back.

We had just landed in San Antonio and found this place on Urbanspoon and decided to give it a try after reading the positive reviews. We are used to latin food since I'm Puertorican, my wife is Ecuadorean and we live in Central Florida. We started with some chips and salsa/queso and the salsa was about the best we've had. We both had a two item combo with fish tacos, rice, beans, chicken poblano empanada for me and spinach empanada for my wife. This has to be at the top of my list on latin food I've ever eaten. Thumbs up

Wonderful atmosphere and the food is good. The empanadas were really good. Service was okay not great but a good place to sit back and take your time.
Branmcdonald
Not bad just not my bag. Service was slow but not horrible even though we were the only one's there. Tried cabrito cabra, beef and pepper empanada and yucca fritas. It was all ok just not my flavor profile although yucca fritas were quite nice especially the sauce.

Love it! My girlfriend and I drove by and while it isn't much to look at from the outside Betos makes up for it with the food. Both my girlfriend and I had the fish tacos which is advertised as voted best, and for us that's true, very filling, and you leave with a feeling that you've tried something new and delicious. Two thumbs up

Fantastic. If you want the real thing go to Beto's. My Mom is from Nicaragua and she enjoyed the food a lot. It reminded me of my grandmother's cooking yum!
Mary
Empanadas are GREAT!. Truly enjoyed my dining experience at this casual, inviting place. Sauce and chips were different from other restaurants. Very Good! Spinach empanada was delicious. Flaky crust, wonderful combo of ingredients. Husband loved the chicken mole empanada. Grew up in San Antonio eating Tex-Mex and Mexican food but this Latin food is amazing. I am an iced tea snob. The tea was so good. The owner/manager came by to check up on food and service. Very impressed with entire experience. Will return. SOON!

Food yes, service no. We've eaten here on numerous occasions, so we know how good the food is, but last night (not crowded for a Saturday) we had the worst service. One waitress brings our drinks, another takes our food order and a third one brings the bill. The whole thing seemed like free style - no order. No one brought our party of 3 water even though I asked for it three times. I finally had to get up and ask another waitress who was getting water for another table. Then slow to get served and super slow for our dessert.

Beto's on Broadway. Really not wanting to cook anything at home on a dreary day here in SA, my partner and I decided to drop by Beto's for dinner on a Sunday. We had a very good dining experience here.<br/><br/>First off, prices here are extremely reasonable especially for the quality of food served. The wait staff is good, and the restaurant is very clean. We love locally-owned restaurants since they have a wonderfully-casual ambiance.<br/><br/>The Sunday night special was ceviche, so we ordered it. This was in the Peruvian style, with citrus-marinated tilapia, aji amarillo, red onion, parsley and served with fried sweet potatoes and roasted corn. It was very good.<br/><br/>For our entrees, my partner chose the B&B Beanie Burger. I chose the grilled fish tacos. This was grilled fish topped with cilantro cole slaw and poblano sauce. This taco billed as “the best in the free world”. I tend to agree. Both of our meals were both tasty and well-prepared.

Great food and service. The salsa and queso with chips was great. The salsa is home made and not from a jar like other places and the queso has a kick to it. The chicken poblano empanada was great. You must also have a bowl of fideo it is delicious. Nina provided great service with a smile. Will definitely visit again. A++++

For what I paid, I expected alot more..so this place is famous for their empanadas..they were good but small...good..not even delicious..or mmmm..no dressing was offered for my salad..and it took three waiters to offer me chips..I got them 20 min later...the mango margarita tasted exactly like orange juice...but I guess the biggest let down is the Owner only greeted his friends and ignored everyone else in the room...a simple "hows everything" was also not offered..wont come back..
Jd
The service sucked! To be honest the food was gross. I'd take a taqueria any day of the week. My chips tasted like tortilla chips from a bag. The hot sauce had no flavor. Ordered a fish taco which was horrible. The fish was dry & plain...no flavor what so ever! The only thing I did like was my lemonade. If you are use to real Mexican food then this is not the place for you. Can't understand what the hype is all about. Will never ever go back!
Old Man Herrer
Our group came in around 8 pm on a quiet Saturday night the patio was empty except for a lone man with his guitar belting out country music. We chose to dine inside where it was a little under half full and dimly lit. Though we were immediately asked for our drink order the service was slow and not very attentive considering the ample staff and the small number of diners. While waiting for our entrees we enjoyed an ample basket of chips with queso and salsa. The salsa was fresh from the stove with a nice punch of heat and the queso though good was unremarkable and not nearly as cheesy as the Latin inspired tunes the pianist played on his keyboard. We all had the tacos al pastor which were some of the best in the city being tender, porky, well seasoned with just the right amount of sweetness from the pineapple though I would have prefered some raw onion with the cilantro. The empanadas (chicken poblano and mole) were fabulously flaky and held their well executed contents. Side dishes were generally good, the fideo was just soupy enough with a nice tomato broth that could have benefitted from a tad more salt. The beans were fine with a nice bacon flavor but our favorite side was the roasted corn which came with a generous sprinkling of cotija cheese and chile powder. Overall the food was great especially for the price and we will be back to try the desert empanadas.

Worth the trip!. Wonderfully friendly staff make this a restaurant we will visit again and again. The chicken poblano empanada was excellent, but the most difficult choice will be to pick one of the five great dessert empanadas.
Zonk175
Beto's is a go!. The chicken poblano empanada is outstanding, as was the quesadilla. The mole is pretty good as well as the el pastor tacos. <br/><br/>Ceviche a little heavy on the acidity (even for ceviche) and could be a bit larger portion as the ingredients are relatively inexpensive, but still worth it!<br/><br/>The fruit empanadas are also very good......<br/><br/>Downside? The guy at another table popping bubble-wrap.<br/><br/>I will eat here anytime that I am in the area.......

Excellent and Different. Can't say enough good things about this place. The staff was friendly and profesional, the building was spotless inside and out, and the food was fresh and fast. We will definitely be back next time we're in town

Good Lunch. Not knowing this was on the food networks show with Guy Fieri, I came in with an unbiased opinion from the start...no hype...This is a place i've been meaning to try but keep passing it up. <br/><br/>11am<br/>I was greeted by a manager and a server sat me outside (my choice) on the patio. Very nice outside patio they have! The waiter went through the entire menu which didn't overwhelm me with what to get...very simple and basic menu. I went with the Al Pastor with borracho beans and rice. Everything from the food, atmosphere and service was A+. I will definitely be back but at night this time...want to try what the server called "Awesome Margaritas"<br/><br/>Bottomline, I left knowing I can recommend this place to anyone for the food and now wonder how the ritas are!
Carolina Huaroto
I went to this restaurant because it appear on food network, but when i ordered the "peruvian ceviche" it was a complete disappointment i dont know who told them it was made like that. Peruvian ceviche does not have chips or corn top with sauce and cheese, that is false advertisment
Eloquent Epicurean
Less is Not More!. Stopped by to sample a couple of empanadas as I was in the area and as there are just not that many restaurants in town that sell empanadas. I liked the flaky crust of the bean and cheese "pie" that I tried. I am a crusty kind of guy anyway; the type that has to have a bottom and top crust on my pot pies. Pretty much what I expected in terms of flavor; not a bad little savory appetizer. I am partial to a little more filling though so get two of the same kind when you want to get a really good taste of the empanada "innards" you select.<br/><br/>Also tried the guava and cream cheese. More guava please!
Jessica
I started with ice tea. It .... I started with ice tea.<br/>It was watered down tea. <br/>I upgraded to a mango strawberry margarita on the rocks.<br/>It was served in a plastic container and just terrible. <br/>I ordered a jicama salad. They served me taco lettuce with pickled red onions with what was supposed to be toasted coconut topping. <br/>They forgot the jicama, they tossed in coconut shavings that were wet n soggy.<br/>Ok , so I ordered the chips and salsa.<br/>Bad idea! Salsa was just not good but the chips were edible.<br/>I then ordered fajita taco and chicken poblano empanadas as well as beef with red chile empanadas . <br/>This was just not edible . The meat in my taco was black left over string cuts
John Lee Sang
Service needs some work. Chips were ok. Tried chicken and beef/chili empanadas. The chicken poblano was alright. The beef one was not so good. Had chalupa cabra -- I enjoyed it I am Jamaican and liked the curry goat. Wife didn't like it though. <br/><br/>Ice tea was weak. My frozen margarita was ok. The unfrozen one not so good
Burger Belly
Beto's has fideo. That alone is a plus for me. Loved the salsa, which was just spicy enough. Tried the chicken poblano empenadas and fajita tacos as well. Everything was very good. We def be coming back to Beto's!
The Bugeater
Simple and Solid. First of all I love the menu. It is simple in the types of food offered, but the variety of flavors available in the form of empanadas, tacos and quesadillas is plentiful. I enjoyed the mole empanada, but it was not the sharpest of mole flavors (a positive for me). The highlight was the Tacos Al Pastor. They were phenomenal. I love the flavor of al Pastor and thought this was in the top two or three I've had. <br/><br/>Oh yeah, you have to pay for chips which is just wrong at a Mexican restaurant in San Antonio. That being said, I love the coarse ground chips. They are my favorite type of tortilla chip. <br/><br/>The service was slow which worked well for a Sunday afternoon when we were there. Under some situations, I think that could be a problem. <br/><br/>My family ate "family" style with sampling from everybody's plate. It was fun because we all ordered something different. All in all it was a fun dining experience.
GastroNOMINEE
Poor Service. Food was off.. First off, service for party of 8 was lacking. Order was taken, not in timely fashion, but plates came out incomplete or with the wrong items. Drink refills were forgotten (about 10 minutes into the meal and no refills on obviously empty glasses). So needless to say the 15 dollar gratuity was not earned.<br/><br/>Second, the food was okay. Chips/salsa was a miss: Chips were stale and broken and not much salsa for 3 dollars. Empanadas were understuffed. Now I don't expect them to be stuffed with a pound of filling, but for 3 dollars each you could at least fill them to as much as the pocket will hold (about 4 oz). Also the tacos and quesadillas (cheese taco) were too small. For a dinner plate of 13 dollars with pick 3 items (choice of empanada, taco, or quesadillas), I would expect better and/or more food.<br/><br/>Maybe it was an "off" day because it was a Monday night...but hey if you choose to run a restaurant that is open 7 days, try to be consistent, either that or offer discounts.

Man this place is outstanding!! Salsa is hot, spicy and really good. Had a fish and chicken taco and both were very flavorful. Great place close to the airport...check it out!
Megan Chavez
I had the mole empinada and taco al pastor. Really good! Nice clean place. Would definitely recommend and go back.
Benjamin
Not good. The chips were stale, the salsa bland, the service abysmal. The goat was good and reminicent of decent indian fare. The empanadas were ok but not fabulous.
LilPiggy
Sabor Pais. I wish we had food like this back home. The empenadas and tacos are really good and their outside area is comfortable. If I lived in the area, I'd go here all the time.
Foodie77
Good "go to" place. Good food. We like sitting outside. Live music on weekends. Ceviche is to die for and I don't eat goat but they rave about the chupa de cabra My favorite is the chicken poblano empanada.
Melinda Schroeder
Amazing Margaritas, empanadas were so delicious along with Pastor taco and chimicurri sauce. I have eaten all over the world and this little jewel was amazing and priced reasonably. I would highly recomend this restaurant. Service was also friendly and fun from 1-10 I would give it a 12 it was awesome!
Turtle
Ordered the fish tacos, chicken quesadilla, and chicken empanada. Awesome food that tasted great, empanada was a bit salty but still good. For sure will be going back.
Dp
Rude. A potential client from the east coast came to town and I took him here to have empanadas. We ordered several and when the order came, it was not right. The waitress was very indignant but took our order again and said "Well that's one way of getting free food." The 3 of us just looked at each other in shock! I was embarrassed and needless to say have not been back.
Lori
Yummy &different. Husband had the chalupacabra and it was a nice mix of sweet and curry but awfully expensive. My empanadas were super flaky, the chicken poblano filling was awesome but a drop salty. The red chile with beef was ok. Service is slow but I think everything is made to order. Our beef nachos were great, love the poblano sauce. I will surely return.

On a Wednesday evening. We found a table easily and were attended by friendly and helpful waiters. Service was fairly quick. My wife's spinach empanada which she ordered without sides was fresh and nicely seasoned. I ordered the famous "Chalupa Cabra" plate. There was quite a lot of shredded cabbage atop the entree, but it was flavorful and quite different from a lot of SA fare. The black bean soup is worth a stop there by itself. The miss was the side of yucca slices which were essentially raw and needed more seasoning. I felt the plate was a tad pricey for what I got ($17.95!), but in fairness the waiter did take off a couple of bucks for the side. We ordered a mango empanada with fresh raspberries in top to go. It was a nice addition to evening tea later. I'm sure we will be back to try more of their empanadas and to have some more of that black bean soup.

Saw this place on Diners, Drive-ins & Dives while vacationing in San Antonio and had to try it. I have to say I was not disappointed! Unique, quaint and delicious, I would recommend Beto's to anyone!
Red Dirt
Good. Not Great.. The restaurant itself is pretty cool. The patio is an awesome place to be when you are wanting a relaxing meal. They sometimes have live music which is a plus. I must say though, that the fish tacos (in my opinion) are just OK. They arent bad but they arent that great either. When i had them they were mainly cabbage. I couldnt taste the grilled fish or their famous sauce. Now their Al Pastor tacos are a different stroy. They are GREAT. I highly highly recommmed the al pastor tacos. They had a nice spice to them and had a lot of flavor. The service has been pretty slow both of the times i went but i still would probably go back just for the al pastor tacos.

I really wanted to like this place. I can't believe how expensive everything is! We went water the Guy Fieri episode featuring the chalupacabra. My family is from Monterrey, Mex., so I know that Cabrini shouldn't cost that much for such a small portion, so we got empanadas instead. I was excited the pollo verde, but it was flavorless salsa verde(except for too much lime) and squishy, oily empanada dough. The pork empanada was too dry. Overall, it was just really disappointing. My curiosity being satisfied, I won't be going back.

Great place. I eat there everytime I come to San Antonio.

Fantastic Experience!. We had a last minute change of plans and decided to go to Beto's. We've found our new casual haunt. Lemonade was great. We had the chicken fajita, chicken poblano empanada, spinach & mushroom empanada, and the Taco al la Karla. Taco al la Karla beat The Cove's fish taco and that's a tough act to follow! The sauce on top was wonderful! Service was excellent. We liked that they were attentive, but not pushy, and let us take out time. Food was great and the price was reasonable. We will go back again and again!

New fave!. Ceviche was amazing, roasted veggies were yummy, sweet potatoes were great, and the salsa was probably the best i've had ever. Plus our server was friendly, helpful, and knew what was in everything

Beto's Comida Latina. The atmosphere was nice and the staff was good. The chicken poblano empanada was amazing! It had this perfect, flaky crust with a savory filling. The menu boasts that the al pastor taco was crowned "gotta eat one before you die" by TX Monthly. Best al pastor taco we have ever had!!! The hibiscus tea was perfect and refreshing on a hot summer day. By the way, this place will be featured on the food network soon so go try it before the crowds find this place!

Really good. Went there by accident -not knowing the area.<br/>viola happy accident, great tacos on homemade corn tortillas-and the empenadas were great-had to take some home-great service -a little drap inside, but were are not talking fine dining-a definite good back,.<br/>try for yourself

Great empanadas. Betos makes great empanadas. They are light and flaky and have interesting fillings. The rest of the food is just ok for me. For example, the Al Pastor taco, one of Texas Monthly's "tacos to try before you die" is tasty . .but kinda small and really pricey if you buy it ala cart for almost $4. I'm not a fan of the rice or the beans. The chips and salsa, which they charge $3 for, are also just OK. The salsa's decent but the queso is really lacking. My buddy says it's Velveta and Rotel . . although I wouldn't know. I do know it's pretty ho-hum. <br/><br/>In short, I like Betos but I would have to agree with those that compain about high-ish prices and small-ish portions. That and they have a big picture of Guy Fieri near the door. I hate Guy Fieri.

Had a blast. We sat outside because it was such a nice March night. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. To start, we had chips with the poblano sauce, salsa and queso - all were good, the Poblano sauce is WONDERFUL. I couldn't get enough of it with my chips so we ordered chicken nachos withe the poblano sauce on it. The were very good. My boyfriend had the fajita tacos which he said were horrible - the meat was tasteless. We drank beer on their patio until the closed and everyone was gone. All together a great night.

Fantastic food, service and ambience- you can't go wrong!

Love this place! Best fish tacos and empanadas in SA! Super laid back atmosphere but what it lacks in decor it makes up with excellent food. Go!

Empanadas del Cielo. I come to Beto's for the empanadas. Point of fact to the reviewer from Phoenix, empanadas, fish tacos, and the great majority of the menu is served with regularity in Mexico at many a home and frankly, Mexico is also a latin country. I am of Mexican extraction and this was what was served at home. That having been said, I eat the empanadas here because they remind me of what grandma used to make. They are amazing. The seasonings are wonderful and subtle. You can't eat just one.

Over-rated and really wanted to like. Small small servings and lacks substance and flavor guava empanada is good bit wisp was like movie theatre style, fish tacos thumbs down, and service, bad. Good luck to them though

Like. We discovered Betos very shortly after moving to San Antonio from Phoenix. Although we haven't found the same quality Mexican food here as there was in Phoenix we were pleasantly surprised by Betos since it is in fact not Mexican but South American. My first favorites were the various empanadas and strangely the enchiladas (although as I said..not a Mexican restaurant). As I explored the menu more after a few trips I discovered the fish sandwiches. These are my current favs. I smother in the chimichuri (you have to have the chimichuri). My partner's favorite is the Al Pastor taco. Atmosphere is nothing special at all, in fact a touch a dive, but clean enough and some effort was made to make it festive.

Cool scene. Great sauces, fish taco was superb

If you want fish tacos, you want Beto's. It's hard to believe such a humble little place lost on the side of a busy road could be so wonderful. A few years ago, someone casually suggested I go to Beto's for the fish tacos... my girlfriend and I have become regular customers ever since! Whenever we are yearning for fish tacos (which is often) there is never any discussion on where to go. They are simply delicious. Perfect, in fact. <br/><br/>As much as we love the empanadas (so many to choose from), the fish tacos are just too darn good to miss out on (be sure and order some chimichurri sauce with those tacos!). Sure, we could get one taco and one empanada but we lose out on the second taco. Or we could get two fish tacos and one empanada but then we bust the seams of our pants. The plates are so generously portioned that we only have room for two items and therefore, we just have to get our two fish tacos combo plate. We always swear we'll get the empanadas "next time" but we just never seem to get around to it. However, we're not gonna give up trying! See you there...

Bland food, surly service, and pepsi products in the fountain. I am surprised this place made Texas Monthly's "63 Tacos You Must Eat Before You Die" list. I would rather die than eat here again.

Can't wait to try more. Everything I've had at Beto's has been tasty. I've probably sampled three different plates, and I plan on expanding that. Restaurant is clean, service is good though at lunch it can be a little slower. Without hesitation I give Beto's a recommended stamp of approval.

I wanted to like it, but.... Just didn't feel it. The vibe was great, but the food was not and the service was really slow. <br/>The food was not very authentic, which is cool, but when you've got "Comida Latina" in your name, it kind of sets a certain expectation. I probably won't go back.

A-ok. I hate to break the 4 and 5 star trend going on here, but I honestly wasn't amazed nor excited by the food. My family came into town and I decided to bring them here since I've heard such good things about it....<br/><br/>Don't get me wrong, the food is good - but it's nothing special or exciting that I'd probably go back for again. Maybe it's because we ate around 2pm and they were at the tail end of lunch service - but its still no excuse for mediocre food. I actually thought that the taco's were more amazing than the empanadas. <br/><br/>I think I may have been a little put off from the appetizer of chips and guacamole. Honestly, I feel that place known for "comida latina" shouldn't be able to screw up guacamole - but I could make better guacamole than what we were served. First off, they must have used Butter avocados or some sort of packaged stuff, but they definitely didn't use Hass avocados - b/c the guac left that weird aftertaste of "not-so-good-avocados" in all of our mouths. <br/><br/>Second, I ordered a Horchata, and honestly that was one of my least favorite horachata's I've had so far in San Antonio. It left this slightly sour taste in my mouth and did not taste fresh at all. <br/><br/>On to the food. The portions are huge. Each one of us ordered a 2combo plate with 1 taco and 1 empanada. Both of them were huge and we were pretty much stuffed by the time we had finished one of the two. All of us agreed that the tacos were much better than the empanadas. The filling in the empanadas were good, but nothing great (the spinach/potato/cheese combo tasted like an Indian samosa, the calabacita con puerco was okay but a little bland, and the chicken poblano was the tastiest out of the three). The crust on the empanada was stupendous, though - very light and flakey.<br/><br/>The inside of the restaurant was very clean and the service was very friendly, but again, I just can't get over the mediocrity of the food. Its good, but nothing great.

Go on Tue. Love the empanadas with the chimichurri salsa, fish tacos special on Tuesday.... guava empanada to die for...!
Yvette
Try the guava cream cheese empanada!!. Its AMAZING!!! Heavenly sweet...........Love the fish tacos,w the tasty dressing as well as the vegetarian nachos, Bit to conservative with the queso for the chips+ pay for the chips and salsa!? But hey.... the Margaritas are great on the porch in the summer and they don't hassle me about my dog if I dine on the patio while my kid enjoys their playground and great outdoor tv shed :)

Very good empanadas. And tasty fish taco and many more items in the menu. Definately a place that would recommend.

Beto's Comida Latina. Good Tex-Mex.

Veggie Friendly Mexican? In SA???. I have been looking for a veg friendly mexican restaurant in San Antonio for a year now. Finally, I found Beto's. I wouldn't say that the options are limitless, but this is by far the best I've seen in San Antonio... In other words, I could eat something other than the quesadillas. The empanadas are great and the black bean soup is excellent. Veggies must try.

Fish tacos. I always feel like I am in Cozumel when I eat the fish tacos at Beto's. I am a bit confused about their new "wait-staff" set up. I liked it when you ordered at the register. Nonetheless, the food is still quality and flavorful.
Nina
Great fish tacos and empanadas. Try the spinach, potato, and olive empanadas. Yum!
Verte Cow
The service has always been consistent: anywhere between ok and good, never terrible and never great. And for the money you spend, this kind of consistency is all you can really ask for. Recommendation: Fish tacos: yes. Veggie tacos: skip ‘em.
