Review The Pantry - Salt Lake City

Robert Alvarez
We stopped here since we had the salt lake city pass. We were so happy we had the opportunity to eat here as it was a beautiful house to enjoy a meal in the city. They validated parking for 3 hours. Food was fantastic and we left the place feeling full. A must stop and if you don't want to eat grab dessert. You will not be disappointed. Friendly Staff

The Lion House Pantry was delicious. It's located in a historic Brigham Young house in Temple Square and has a unique ambiance. We had the corned beef, chicken noodle soup, and the rolls. My only regret is that we didn't get more rolls. I would definitely recommend stopping in.

As far as cafeteria style food goes, this is best-in-class. I come here whenever I'm visiting City Creek Center. It's not too expensive, and you get a good serving of home-style cooking that has never had me leave regretting that I ate there. In my experience its never too crowded either, it has a nice hole-in-the-wall feel to it.

Beautiful historic venue and pantry. I've been to a couple of lunches and receptions for weddings here and it's been great every time. I love the hisotric feel of the building and the classic look of the furniture, lighting, and decor. It's also close to City Creek and the temple so it's in the middle of everything.

Simply the most amazing rolls i've ever tasted. Both the orange cinnamon and the Signature Lion House Rolls are worth the journey into Temple Square. What the place lacks in ambiance is well compensated for with it's history and friendly employees. (Note to first time Utah visitors: soft drinks only...duh.) 5 Stars. Highly recommended! This was fun for my daughter and her birthday party with all of her friends it is really easy for the parents because we can offload all the hassle of the party to the lion house. Our party leader was great and had a lot of fun with the girls. I wish they would offer a little bit more for dinner but then again I was one of the two parents there what was offered was just fine for the little kids.

Nice place! The renovated house of Brigham Young, this place serves as a restaurant on temple square. The entrees all came with two sides and a Lionhouse roll (the rolls were great!). The soups had nice cafeteria feel about them, and fellow visitors found the meat options (aside from Salmon) had more than necessary fat. For the most part, with home cooked potatoes and chicken noodle soup, I would say the food was pretty good, and the soups were worth the price. The setting was the real charm of the place. :)

Good quality and taste, however a bit pricey for the portion size.

Love the warm dinner rolls with sweet butter! Anything you order is a delight. Portions are very plentiful; always make space for soup!

Great food, great service, great atmosphere!

We have eaten here a few times now and aren't wowed. The rolls were the only thing to keep me coming back. The food is just ok but it rates up there with most cafeteria style places in my book and just I'm not a huge fan. The location can't be beat if you are downtown in the temple square area and already have parking. I highly recommend the tour upstairs though. It is free and very interesting and worth the time. The missionaries couldn't be kinder.

We were visiting from St. Louis and some Utah locals recommended this restaurant, it did not disappoint! If I could get those rolls and the best sweet butter I have ever had on the plane, I would!

The bread rolls and the Beesting Shortcake were outstanding. Everything else was certainly acceptable, with the exception of the mashed potatoes which were a tad watery. I would have given a 4 rating but dropped it to a 3 because of the appalling behavior of the cashier. I had visitors from Virginia with me and had often commented on the friendliness and helpfulness of Utahns. We were there on May 9th about 1 for lunch. We had just got to the cash register when an elderly, frail man, I think in his 80's, approached the cashier with a small Styrofoam cup in his hand and asked the blond cashier if there was a bigger cup for water. The unsmiling cashier frowned, literally took the cup from him, saying "those cups are not for water." Then she showed him a large cardboard cup and said "these are for water. They cost a $1.99." Before I had a chance to offer to pay for this larger cup for the elderly man, he had turned and left. This female, blond cashier had a cranky face, and a thoroughly ungracious, unsympathetic manner. She should not be representing Lion House Pantry.

Came here while on vacation and the place, as well as the food, was very good. The roasted turkey and homemade rolls are definitely a must-try.

The building and room was great. However kinda disappointed on the food and policy it has. 2 people were unable to attend the party and was not refunded the cost nor able to take their meals to go. I get that it is their policy however, it must be changed because it does not benefit the customer. Life happens and there is sickness, accidents, traffic, etc. There should just be a fee of say $10 for example for a cancellation. This feels like robbery and does not reflect the way of Brigham Young.

The Lion House was the perfect place to host our immediate family wedding luncheon. We wanted something small but refined, and this place was just right. We had our luncheon in the Garden Room, which we highly recommend - the room was very beautiful. The food was phenomenal! Our guests still talk about how delicious the food was - and they were very accommodating to some slight variations we requested in our menu selection. Our event coordinator was incredible - she was very attentive and polite, and helped make our luncheon the best it could be. The only letdown was their music system was temporarily down, so we had to enjoy our luncheon without pleasant background music. The Lion House is an excellent choice for a wonderful wedding luncheon. NOTE: The entry for the Lion House Banquets/Events is through the front, the entry for the Pantry/Cafe is on the left.

Bardzo smaczna, domowa, amerykańska kuchnia. Wszystko bardzo świeże, przemiła obsługa, ciepła atmosfera. Czysto, skromnie, uroczo, bez fajerwerków. Very tasty home-made american cuisine. Everything is very fresh, nice service, warm atmosphere. Clean, modest, charming, simple.

This past weekend I was able to take our Youth Conference Group to the Lion House. I have to say they have a wonderful Manager!! We loved our visit, enjoyed ALL the delicious food, the variety, and the amazing customer service. Thanks so much for a wonderful experience!!

The food is always fabulous! Never a disappointment. Cafeteria style so everyone gets to pick what they want from the variety that day. Reasonable prices. If the weather is good go outside to the private patio garden nestled between the Lion House and the Beehive House. Then make sure to top off the experience with a free tour of Brigham Young 's home, the Beehive House, right next door!

Andrea Patrick Black
We both had the Lion House Salmon, and it was so good! We thoroughly enjoyed our meal.

Delicious food and a good price. There are no substitutes.

No regrets but nothing spectacular either. The building was fascinating.

Nice meal

If you're in the temple square area this is a good option for lunch. Fresh ingredients made for a tasty meal in a historic setting. From what I hear the only drawback is they sometimes run out of some items. Everything is reasonably priced.

Had the pleasure of participating in a catered meal here for a conference I was attending. The event took place in an upper level room that I believe was the original bedroom. This is an interesting place full of history and was a nice setting for a group dinner. The food was not as good as I had anticipated after reading other reviews - the pork chop was a bit dry - but overall ok.

I was in Utah for a quick, 3-day trip last week (before returning home to the Middle East). Coming to the Lion House Pantry was high on my list of touristy things to do while in Salt Lake, being interested in both history and religion, and given that the house once belonged to Brigham Young and his family.

The official website made it look like an old world experience of homemade food-- sort of like a Mormon Cracker Barrel. I wasn't expecting my experience to be more like a school cafeteria, except with a much more picturesque atmosphere. I ended up having a "cashew chicken" salad, which was a pre-made plate of iceberg lettuce mix and an ice cream scoop of the chicken salad topped with cling wrap. No dressing. The chicken salad itself didn't resemble any other chicken salad I had ever had-- it had chicken, mayo, but other colorful things in it and was topped off with one lone raspberry. To be honest, if I were just glancing at the scoop, chicken salad wouldn't have been my first guess as to what it was. That said, it was surpassingly tasty! Still, it would have been better with salad dressing and, for the price, a slightly bigger scoop of chicken salad.

The rest of the food in line looked just "okay." The desserts, despite claiming to be quite famous, looked cheap and uninteresting. Seriously, Starbucks offers more gourmet food.

I'm glad I had experience of visiting the Lion House Pantry, but if not for the historic ties, I wouldn't have spent the money to eat here.

Great experience. I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the Lion House, as I remember having a "half-birthday party" there as a child. When I returned there as an adult, I was delighted to find that the restaurant was just as quaint and warming as I remembered. Even though the menu is always changing, there is always something to love, and it almost takes me back to my mom or grandma's cooking from childhood. The atmosphere is just as enjoyable, and I felt at home from start to finish. I can't wait to go back.

Feels like home. This place makes you feel like you're at Grandma's for dinner. The food is universally good. Like you would have to be insane not to like it. I've been there a few times while visiting friends in the city and we would go to the Lion House for some good, warm, hearty, soul-food. If you're just visiting SLC, it's definitely a place you want to hit while you're there.

Can't beat eating in a historic landmark. I visited Temple Square and the Lion House with my family and loved it. You are eating in a home that is more than 100 years old. Kinda cool. The food is home-cooking style, which is very fitting for the venue. Some of the recipes I'm told are as old as the house itself. It's a fun experience and very reasonably priced. Also family friendly, you can pick and choose what looks good from a cafeteria-style setup. I'd go again for those soul-warming comfort foods!

Break Fast is Amazing. The Lion house Pantry just started serving breakfast. If you thought that there lunch and dinner was great you will love there breakfast. They do not disappoint, they have this Amazing french toast with this caramel sauce that is baked on top and I got a serving of french toast eggs and sausage and a drink all for about 6 bucks. So going there again.

The desserts are wonderful. Reasonably priced, fast, and interesting. Always great food.

Food was Really Good and great value too. On top of that all staff was so helpful and nice! The cafeteria style serving was very efficient, can't wait to come back for More.

Home Cooking. The food was the best of it's type I have had. Cafateria style is not my favorite, but theirs was very good and the bread always gets the nod.
I Heart Salt Lake
The food is served cafeteria style, with several hot menu choices each day. They always have soups and salads too. The menu changes daily but you can see the monthly menu online.
