Oh man, amazing sandwiches! Nothing fancy, but delicious. You might have to wait in line for a few minutes, but it's worth it. We had pastrami and Reuben sandwiches.

It was pretty good, we got pastrami and turkey sandwiches. They have a discount if you pay with cash (1% or something, I believe). Kaiser roll was great, prefer that over the white bread. Meat was good though not super flavorful.. I’m thinking I should try the cold version next time!

Nice local gem! I heard the pastrami was the best so I tried it myself...Wow it was delicious 🤯 Definitely worth trying out and enjoying!

I went in while I was in town, and to my surprise they had the Corn beef that had the fat in it. To some you think why would you want fat in the meat and to you I say it makes it taste better. And for years now they had stopped having it. I was super excited and regretted not buying more while there. The young lady who waited on me was very pleasant. She made suggestions, verified my order, and even joked with me that for a little extra they could ship me some. We laughed and laughed, and oh how I wish they could because a day after making it back to Arizona it didn't make the freezer the family ate Corned Beef for two days straight. Now I am craving more, lol.

This place is great. Local owned shop. The pastrami sandwich was incredible and huge. Half sandwich shown in the pic. Thank you!!!!

Best sandwich outside NYC. This place is a true gem. Had the Rueben…fantastic!

Excellent 1st experience, highly recommend! (Pastrami on croissant with swish and spicy mustard)

I was at the hospital and this place is walking distance. The menu is nice and a great selection. I ordered a corned beef, a pastrami, a ham and cheese and some others. Upon receiving the meal, I was impressed with the portion. The flavor of the bun and meat were delicate and delicious. I give the deli a five star due to the freshness and quality. Definitely will be a returning visitor.

How can anyone not like Carl’s?? Their sandwiches are massive, simple and delicious, and fresh.
Want a turkey and provolone cheese sandwich? Here, have a pound of meat on wheat for $11.99.
Want some egg salad? How about two cups on white bread? $11.99.
How about a half-pound of roast beef with horseradish sauce on a hoagie? That will be $11.99.
This is the best deli in STL in my opinion! No nonsense and friendly staff. Can’t beat ‘em. Can’t wait to try the lox bagel next. My only suggestion is to add sourdough bread as an option.

Carl's is a clean little deli on Clayton Rd, just across the street from St Mary's Hospital. Carl greets his customers as they enter and offers easy, friendly conversation. Though the building isn't designed for accessibility, if you need a ramp, just ask and Carl or one of his employees will put one out if it's not already in place.
Now, the important stuff, food! The selection is classic, but the quality is stellar, and the SIZE of the sammiches... You'll want a to-go container! Sadly, Carl's knish machine is down and he's having trouble getting it repaired or replaced, so you'll have to wait to get your knish fix. Still, I strongly recommend hustling (or sashaying, or moseying or whatever) on in to try one of Carl's amazing sandwiches. And don't forget to order one of their delicious sides to complement that stack of meat!

If you have never been to Carl's, you haven't lived. No where else can you get a rubber that is 3in high packed with corned beef. Their pastrami cannot be beat, and it too is stacked! Go there hungry, or go prepared to bring some home.

First time here, but the Rueben is amazing. Will definitely be back!

Local gem, giant sandwiches! Nice patio and staff. Excellent hot German potato salad and vinegar-based slaw. Bring a friend and an appetite!

Hot Pastrami with Provel on an onion bun with Hot German Potato Salad. So Good. One of my Favorite Deli's in St. Louis!

I used to be a regular at Katz’s Deli when I worked in that area. I’m very picky and judgmental when it comes to pastrami. Carl’s has the best pastrami I’ve had outside the NYC metro area. The sandwich has the same quantity, quality and flavor of Katz’s pastrami sandwich for half the price. It’s almost too good to be true but fortunately it is! Will definitely be back the next time I’m in STL.
Laurie's Epic Adventures
This place is a must if you’re in this area! The sandwiches are huge and delicious! It has the feel and character of an old NYC deli! I will be back as often as possible! Seriously can’t say enough good stuff about this gem!

Well worth the visit even though there is some construction going on right outside!! They are still open!!
Best place to get pastrami to make sandwiches at home or for cooking with eggs for breakfast!!
The young people they have working their were fast & friendly!
They have the option to order giant party sandwiches if you call 2 days in advance!
Stop by for lunch!

HUGE sandwiches stuffed FULL. The hot pastrami and Rueben sandwiches are incredible. A true New York deli. If you like the old traditional hot German potato salad, this place has it! Avoid the wait and order ahead by phone.

I’m 48 and have spent my whole life looking for a pastrami place like the one my Dad always took me as a child in North West plaza. I’ve eaten at Carl’s several times thru the years and always said it reminded me that place. I was Eating here a month ago and looked up and saw a license place that said “2cents plain” (the name of the place in NWP) I was so excited... only wished my Dad was still alive to enjoy my discovery.

Some things change with each new trend. Some things are perfect and should never change. The latter is Carl's Deli. It's been years since I was in St. Louis and had a chance to return. Same location, and still the best hot pastrami on rye available anywhere. A St. Louis tradition that never disappoints.
Chris Baldwin
Very fresh ingredients, bread was fresh, tomatoes were fresh, lettuce was fresh and the amount of meat on the sandwich was insane. I have never seen so much meat on one sandwich. The staff and owner were very nice, very good service, wished I lived close.
Thanks

I drive 60 miles round trip to get this awesome pastrami and cornwd beef sandwiches. My father always insisted to go there when in town as he said it was the best he ever had outside of New York!
Kenny Happe
It was freaking amazing. No other sandwich in my entire life good compared to these pastrami sandwich I had at Carl’s. Game over…
Joe Newman
It's become known that the pastrami sandwich is called now the best sandwich in the world because it is, everyone that I have introduced to Carl's deli has loved every sandwich that they have texted, so bottom line best Deli in Missouri.
Andrew Shaughnessy
Spot on. Highly recommend for their amazing Pastrami and Matzo soup. Hands down an amazing Deli!
Allison Babcock
The best pastrami sandwich in St. Louis! Have been stopping by for several years.
Veronica Ronnie Marshall
My first time going today and the food was delicious! I had a hot pastrami with the works! Will definitely visit again!
Barry Rowand
I've tried pastrami sandwiches all over St. Louis and these guys do it right you get it hot no cheese on a hoagie it's one of the first places I take anybody who visits
Jean Rohlfing
Delicious gigantic Ruben Sandwich was very good and the workers were very nice

I am from NY and happen to drive by Carl's, well I had to stop. I've been starving in StL for 4 months now, until my Pastrami on Rye from Carl's! Wow! Served hot, practically melts in your mouth and for what? 8$!?? Same sandwich is $20 in NY. And the taste was delicious, and fresh. I will be at Carl's again soon. Thank you Carl's
Tom Hamilton
I had the Corned beef on an onion bun, and I was satisfied with almost everything. When I normally get corned beef, I expect juicy, melts in your mouth, and not a ton of fat. I got a dry beef bacon sandwich basically. Overall, not bad, but it needs to be braised or steamed.

Good food, plenty of it, highly recommend it.

I first went here many years ago with my mother and have been many times since then. I took my Boston born husband yesterday and he was very impressed with the hot pastrami and said it took him back home. He hasn't tasted anything as good as it since moving away from Boston over 20 years ago! Awesome!
Kathy Buschmann Munie
Love the pastrami!
Amanda Sweeney Richie
Ate here for the first time today.. not very impressed. Yes, my pastrami sandwich was huge. But honestly, the pastrami didn't taste that great.. and the swiss cheese that cost extra tasted nothing like swiss. I would come back and try something else except for the place is FILTHY. There was a layer of film on the salt and pepper shakers, food stuck to the table and chairs, all over the floor. I'm not one to take notice if a restaurant is really clean.. but this place was noticeably gross. Seems like I could go somewhere else for a decent sandwich in a cleaner place nearby.
They also charge for toppings like lettuce. That's pretty ridiculous. A 9 dollar sandwich that doesn't include lettuce.

How many times do I need to drive by Carl's before I stop in here?

Finally we stopped in today , I had the Pastrami on rye and my buddy had roast beef, you will never say WHERE'S THE BEEF these sandwich's are filled with meat and taste even better , WOW they are the best.
The line never dies down at lunch ... but it moves pretty fast.
We both had to take the other half of our sandwich to go , just to much for one meal and I noticed other people were taking half to go.

Yes we recommend you stop in here , well worth the trip.

5 Plus Rating

I liked the Pastrami. I've had lunch here once a few years ago and the pastrami sandwich was generously piled with meat, New York style, and it was tender, tasty and delicious. I'd like to get back and see if it's still as good.
Matt
The pastrami here is so very good. I will be back for many, many more. I might even go back tomorrow. Awesome!
Dominic Flores
Best. Pastrami. Sandwich. Period. I've never even had anything that comes close. I am as serious as the heart attack I might have because I just ate that thing in less than 2 minutes.

Nasty Dirty Deli. Just plain Nasty & Dirty ! Don't use the restroom !
Robert
Good pastrami, but I can't approve of any deli that uses a microwave to heat up its sandwiches. Invest in a toaster oven please.
Meag
Truly a gem. An old school deli with some of the best sandwiches in town. Pastrami and corned beef are delicious! A rare find.
Scrunchee
Extra charges sure add up!. Nothing about Carl's is quality. The meats are subpar, every topping costs extra, and the deli is dirty. Everything in Carl's needs a massive cleaning. Three people in my party all of whom with NEVER return. There are much better options for a superb sandwich close by ;)
Puggle Tamer
Delicious. Went today for my first time. I had the hot pastrami on rye with swiss and spicy mustard, and my wife had the hot turkey. Both sandwiches were very good. The pastrami had a mild smoke with a pepper rub on the outside. It went great with the mustard and melted swiss. My wife very much enjoyed the turkey. It is a New York style deli with meats sliced right in front of the customer. We will be going back for sure.

This is the best Pastrami in the St Louis area. The Pastrami was even better than I have found in the Southern California area. I had the Pastrami and Provolone on Rye bread with a pickle and my wife had the Pastrami on Onion Roll without Cheese. Both were great. The service was also great. Prices were very reasonable. $6.50 each. Will go back at least once a week.

Long line. The lines are long but the food is good. the sandwiches are huge and all around 7$. finding a place to sit inside might be hard bc the place is tiny. every one should try it

Oh my god, my first visit here will be the last. First, I love delis, and am no stranger to quality deli meat. Their pastrami looks and tastes like it came out of the pre-packaged vacuum-sealed lunchables that kids eat. The corned beef was cold, dry, and paper thin. The pastrami was BLACK and looked like it had been cooked in tar. The odor inside was a turn off, and the employees were clueless when we asked for samples of the corned beef. I hoped this place would be good but we left and immediately went to a real deli. You couldn't pay me to return to Carl's.

Best Place in Town!. Carl's Deli is the best place to eat in town! I have been eating there since I was a kid and the food is amazing! The people are nice and friendly and the food is amazing. I can't eat a sandwich anywhere else!!
Chloe
I only get their Hot Pastrami on Rye, and love it. Sometimes a whole sandwich is too much for me to eat. I'm supposed to watch my diet and have to limit myself from going their since I work close to the Deli. One thing is you have to watch and make sure the person making your sandwich has washed his/her hands well.

I can't believe Carl's has been right under my nose since I moved here more than ten years ago. Evidently they've been at it for more than 60 years. Better late than never I suppose. Be aware that their hours aren't the most conducive to the dinner crowd. The latest they're open is 5:30 on the weekdays, but it's certainly worth leaving work early for.
