Review Fritanga Nicaraguan Cuisine - Saint Louis

I recently visited Fritanga, a Nicaraguan restaurant, and had a wonderful dining experience. I started with the chicken empanada, which was incredibly flavorful and had a perfectly crispy crust. The filling was well-seasoned and the portion was generous. For my main course, I ordered the Bistec encebollado, a sirloin steak marinated in a delicious mojo criollo. The steak was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, and the flavors from the garlic, herbs, and spices were mouthwatering. The steak was topped with slow-cooked caramelized onions, adding a touch of sweetness to each bite. The entire meal was not only delicious but also very hearty. The portion sizes were generous, leaving me satisfied and content. The restaurant itself was clean, creating a pleasant and inviting atmosphere. The staff members were friendly and provided excellent service, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. One aspect that stood out was the wait time, which was surprisingly short. I didn't have to wait long to be served, allowing me to enjoy my meal without any unnecessary delays. Overall, my first visit to Fritanga was a delightful experience. The food was delicious, the place was clean, the staff was great, and the wait time was minimal. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to savor authentic Nicaraguan cuisine in a welcoming environment.

Plenty of open tables for lunch on a Friday, which was surprising because everything was excellent!! The cheese empanadas were ooey gooey and the chimichurri and vinegar-based sauces on the table paired perfectly. I got the Churrasco Nica and my cousin got the Canoa de Maduro with chicken. The food was soooo good and we definitely asked for more chimichurri to dip our sides in! Will definitely be visiting again for more of their friendly service and delicious dishes!

The food is so delicious and packed with flavor. The service is always on point and the food come out fast. We always get the flank steak, the fried sweet plantains and beans and rice.

We loved our lunch of two appetizers from @fritanganica.stl! Maduros con queso - sweet plantains were perfectly cooked, and this fantastic hunk of cheese was crispy on the outside and smooth on the inside. Chichiarron de pollo - crispy, deep-fried little chicken drumsticks that came with an herb sauce and a tangy, spicy citrus sauce. Oh, and fried green plantains, too! They were both so good! That being said, even though there was only one other couple in the restaurant, it took about 40 minutes to get our food. Seemed kind of long to me!

Everything we had was phenomenal! Canoa de madura with chicken, pollo con chimichurri, tostones, rice and beans. Generous portions, great hot sauce, and friendly service. Will go back.

Did family style across 5 entrees and loved them all! Fried chicken was amazing as was the slow cooked shredded beef! Definitely a place to try!

Fast service, great fresh food with lots of flavor. They have some amazing authentic drinks and food. I wish I would have known my fish was going to come whole with the head on.... I typically do not like to eat whole fish but this did have good flavor.

Snagged the Red Snapper, plantains and rice and beans. Chimichurri sauce. A good ole Nicaraguan beer and their most expensive Nicaraguan rum. Everything was way above par. Going back soon

The flavoring and sauces of the dishes are excellent. I had the shrimp with this jalapeño sauce. Very good! My girl had the chicken, which I snagged a bite of and was good too!

A locally-loved Nicaraguan restaurant in the city's McKinley Heights neighborhood, less than 10 minutes from Downtown. Inside: bright colors and original art fill the walls. Greeted with festive music and big smiles. Laid back-- only good vibes allowed! I met a friend for dinner on a Wednesday on a unusually warm January night, the place had a nice crowd. The owner handled service with only a little additional help and he was a delight. His humor was included, MO extra charge! We started with the pork empanadas, as recommended. Lightly fried, stuff with juicy shredded pork. Top it with one of the complimentary sauces accompanying if you like spice (jalapeño) or cilantro or pickled onion. The most popular dishes we were told: the Canoa De Madurai and Platano Loco. Both are plantain dishes served with meat and mozzarella cheese. Then you have the carne asada (beef tip), the national dish of Nicaragua! I stuck with pork, ordering the Chancho Asado. It's a plate-full of pork shoulder resembling a St. Louis pork steak! Charred to perfection and surrounded by traditional sides of beans and rice and plantains. My date went with beef. Churrasco Nica. Cilantro rubbed skirt steak, garlicky and salty and tender. Soooo very good. No room for dessert this time y'all, sorry!! This place should make your regular rotation.

My sister and I came here for dinner. It was our first time trying Nicaraguan food. My parents our Haitian so the food here seemed familiar. The way the restaurant made their plantains is very similar to how Haitians make it so I really enjoyed that. My sister and I had the same dish. It was a chicken stew with rice & beans. It was different from what I’m accustomed to but I enjoyed it. I’m used to spicer flavored meats but this was sweet in a good tasting way. I finished everything on my plate. I recommend going to this place.

You’re missing out if you’ve never been here. The food is excellent. Very authentic feel. The prices were very reasonable as well.

So glad we passed by this place on way through the city. Fantastic food that brought my wife back to our days traveling through Central America.

Most authentic latin-american experience around. Just like being in Central America...without the flight. Food is so good. If you go to Cherokee street for authentic Mexican...add this into your rotation. You might find its your favorite! Nicaraguan is NOT Mexican but you will find some familiar dishes and spices.

Definitely recommend this place to all. Ordered the beef empanadas and they were excellent, nicely cooked, plenty of meat. For the main course I had the carne asada and my wife had the chicken chimichurri. Both were excellent and tender and the sauce complimented the dish very well. The red beans were also tasty. The place is a little small, but I enjoyed the ambience and the staff was very friendly. I'll definitely be eating here again.

This place has a nice local vibe, the owner was super great and even brought some free plantains. I highly recommend the stuffed tortillas. All the other food coming out looked great too.

Food was very good, but I can't say the same about the service and the establishment itself. The chairs were ripped, we waited forever for our food and our waiter was a little rude. I would definitely order take out from this place again, but I don't think I'd come back and sit down to eat here again.

I’m in town visiting a friend and we came here for lunch. Service was outstanding and the food was extremely delicious ...I highly recommend this place.

First time there. Went with the Ethnic Restaurant Fans Meetup group. Wonderful atmosphere. Very tasty food at most reasonable prices. In my case, it was the Carne Asada, with Gallo Pinto and Tajada Verdes on the side. Highly recommend this establishment.

Such tender chicken with such a nice combination of favors that not one flavor overpowered the rest. Can't wait to go back and try the guacamole.

Food was good. Enjoyed some Hispanic dishes from a restaurant, for a change. However, did not like the fact that we had to wait quite a bit for our food, drinks. Yet, another 6 party arrived right after us (we were already seated when they arrived) but because they knew someone that worked there (?one of owners? ) they had appetizers and drinks on their table within minutes while WE waited. Not happy about that. All customers should be treated as important as the ones you know.

I ordered empanadas as appetizer and I waited more than 30min for that I may say 40min and I was the only one in the restaurant with my son, but I think the waiter was so busy talking and chatting so when finally empanada was served it was cold. Gallo pinto wasn't good but the beef with onions and the churrasco was good.

The food was excellent...beyond delicious!! The service was outstanding as well!! And the atmosphere cannot be beat! You will enjoy it tremendously!

Don't be in a hurry and have a schedule to keep. In fact just order another round of Nicaritas and enjoy. The rice and beans are good enough to make a meal from. The Canoa de Meduro takes plantains to a new level (I suggest the pork). And don't miss out on empanadas to start.
