This was definitely our best choice in eating while here. We found on google and it did not disappoint. When we walked up there were 2 restaurants one fried chicken and the other BBQ. The BBQ line was very long. The greeter for the chicken place was friendly and told us to come on in. He then ran down the menu and said they had "greens". We were sold! The food was fresh, staff friendly and we tried just about everything on the menu. The only items we didn't like was deviled eggs and mac and cheese. Everything else I could have eaten cold the next day. Definitely give them a try!!!
There is nothing on this world that I enjoy more than quality chicken meals. No matter the preparation. I would, at this point, consider myself a chicken connoisseur at the least, an expert at the most. I have reviewed establishments as a secret shopper. I have been to well over 200 of some of the greatest poultry producing establishments all across our great country. I've been to Princes in Nashville, home of the hot chicken. I've had juicy slow-smoked jerk chicken, made by Jamaican immigrants, from the Jerk Hut in Florida. I've been to every single wing establishment recommended by both the Riverfront Times and the STL Wing Ding. Yesterday I went to this truly one-of-a-kind, first-rate, master-class restaurant. A man, possibly a manager or, even, the owner told me I was about to "have the best fried chicken you've ever had" as I waited in line for the first time. I can say, without hesitation, it was the most flavorful chicken I've ever had in my entire life. Perfectly cooked and of the utmost quality, you need to go here and experience this phenomenon ASAP. Also, the service from all staff members was impeccable. Many thanks.
Visiting from Virginia, and when arrived to St. Louis googled best chicken in area and Southerns popped up. It was right! I had the fire bird with General Tso sauce and it was absolutely delicious. The macaroni could of been a little bit better. But overall loved it and the staff was super friendly. A must go visit!
We tried this while visiting town for an event. It was on google and within walking distance of the venue. Couldnāt be happier with the experience! Iām am not usually into fried chicken so I was a little nervous about trying it out. The staff was beyond friendly and helpful! The food was so excellent, if we lived closer this would become a usual dining place for us! If you havenāt tried this place and have the chance we highly recommend it! Our picky eater child even loved the chicken tenders and fries!!!
Chicken is the best in Saint Louis! The chicken is so crispy and fried to perfection, the collard greens are packed with flavor. And the sauce is amazing itās like raising canes sauce on steroids and the fries are seasoned to perfection. All in all a fantastic spot to eat!
The food and service was excellent. Supersize servings for the price you pay. They restored my faith in St. Louis friendliness. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes home cooked food.
I was told when I walked in the door that I was about to eat the best chicken I had ever had. The chicken was delicious. Everything was incredible (fried green tomatoes... O-M-G). We were greeted by Billy as soon as we walked in and he was phenominal. He went above and beyond to ensure that my children and I had an amazing dinner. Hands-down the best service that I have ever received. Will definitely be back!
I'm a Fried Chicken freak....I love a good, spicy flavorful bird. Everyone is always Hodaks this and Hodaks that
Ummmm...No, Southern blows them outta the ballpark. Not even comparable. To me Hodaks is bland... Southern is absolutely delicious, fresh, and every bite drips w flavor, and their freaking fries...damn good
I love this place. Iāve only been there a few times, but I gotta say that the food is awesome! The services is well above average and the staff are always courteous! If you have not been to Southern, do so now!
Ordered the two piece white dinner(mild) with mac-n-cheese and southern greens. It was amazing!! And the come-back sauce... Wow!! Southern easily competes with some of the best Nashville hot chicken I've had. We will definitely be back!
Yeah man, everything about this place is tops. The service, the staff, and hands down best chicken weāve ever had anywhere ever. We go just about every Sunday.
Went back to Southern today for makeup meal got the catfish fish meal, it was very good crunchy and Light and the greens flavorful thank you Billy #stlSouthern!
That catfish was incredible, best Iāve ever had. The bone in chicken is for real sooo juicy and tender! Not sure how they do it. It WOW it was awesome!
Amazing food. Great staff. Quick service. Chicken was the best hot chicken I've had.
This is probably the best chicken place I've ever been too. It's owned by the Pappy's people next door and shares a building with them.
We came on a Friday night, about 6pm, and there was no wait at all. However, there is limited seating inside, so it is possible to not have a spot to eat upon arrival if they were to be busy. There is some seating outside near Pappy's, but that only works if the weather is nice.
The Fried Chicken Sandwich was good. A big piece of chicken breast, and the bun was toasted and buttery. But the real star was the Chicken Tenders. My girl and I both enjoyed them more than any other we've ever tried. There have been several spots in the past that we used to frequent weekly, and this is better than any of them. The chicken is perfectly cooked, still juicy, and the Hot Honey sauce was delicious.
Too bad were not from around here or we would be coming here every week.
If you meant to go to Pappys and they were out of everything when you got there, and now you're wondering if you should give Southern a shot, YES. Yes you should.
Same owners, same passion for what they do and crazy big portions over here too.
I would highly suggest going with a few people and sampling/sharing. Their most basic chicken is highly flavored- even with just their regular batter and herbs. Not spicy, picky kids will still like it.
I opted for HOT and could've standed to bump up a heat or two, but gave my lips a mild sting. I'm still full 3 hours later- and I got the salad and only finished HALF!
we also tried a classic hot sandwich with the mac & cheese (mac n cheese connoisseur husband said š„) and the surf n turf. The spice blend on the fish is still spicy without sauce and they're nice, curly, thin pieces of fish, which I prefer over a big ol wet bite of fried fish. The crew is extremely hard working and sweet. Look at the menu and narrow it down beforehand- it's hard to order in line under pressure unless you're a regular.
Next time- dessert! Banana pudding š?! š
Typical issue - went to Pappyās, not patient enough to wait in the long line - maybe next time. Went into Southernās and the line was moving quite rapidly. 2 orders of Firebird Chicken Sandwiches and 3 piece tenders all with FRIES! Holy smokes - joke at Pappyās! The chicken was done to perfection, sauces great, and the seasoned fries were done perfectly! This is a GREAT place to go, not as a fall back to the long lines at Pappyās, but just stand alone, the Southern can hold its own! Well done. I hear that the owners for the two establishments are one and the same! Great, working business model when feeding the masses. Also, whatās the deal with people expecting 5-star service when they pay 3-star prices for Great food!!!
I got (hot honey)chicken strips, mac n cheese, and greens. The chicken and mac n cheese were both delicious. The greens were ok but had a sweet taste, which was odd to me. Greens should not be sweet. The guys were friendly and allowed me to switch the greens for some French fries that were pretty good, too. 4 chicken strips, 2 sides, and a fountain drink = $20.
Hereās what you need to know: absolutely loved my southern chicken sandwich. I ordered mild (to avoid heartburn now that Iām in my mid 40s) and it was just the right amount of heat but SO MUCH FLAVOR.
The sandwich was well sized and the chicken was insanely tender for a chicken breast (Iām assuming some sort of a buttermilk marination), and the seasoned batter is to die for.
Coleslaw was pretty mediocre and just not good. Had hoped for more there. Ambiance is just OK - casual but tables werenāt clean. Itās right next to Pappyās smokehouse and owned by the same owners so your view is of the smokers as you are seated in the sandwich shop.
Service was slow, even though at 3:30PM on a Sunday, it was nearly empty and winded down.
Excellent pricing at $10.75 for a great sandwich with a side.
Awesome place to eat!! Clean restaurant and friendly staff, and food was super delicious! My husband had the tenders in mild with slaw and fries, and he loved it!!! I had the tenders in hot honey with mashed potatoes and gravy and mac and cheese, and it was all delicious! Would love to come back and eat here againā¦I would love to try the cluckin hot on my chicken next time!! Definitely recommend this place if youāre in St. Louis!!
Good chicken fast. No frills counter order place with a small dining area.
Best place for a spicy chicken sandwich. Sides. Appetizers. It's all good here. Sometimes you have to go over to pappys to get your beverage and their servers are very rude about it. Unless that happens you should have an excellent experience here.
My ole man picked this place out the blue and we struck gold. Food was absolutely amazing. We both ordered the 4 chicken tenders with 2 sides. Food was hot, fresh, and full of flavor. The greens were delicious as well as the macaroni and cheese. The potatoes and gravy will make you dance. The chicken comes in mild or hot. The mild was pretty damn hot and I was glad I didn't get the hot or it would have been too hot. I was disappointed that it seemed as tho the air wasn't on. I was hot eating spicy chicken in a hot restaurant. Other then that I was totally impressed and a satisfied customer. Keep up the good work guys!!
Food was so good! For anyone who's been to Hattie B's, it's very similar. You order at the counter, then find a table. I got the 2 piece dark hot honey with okra & mac n cheese. They were already out of mashed potatoes. We also had fried green tomatoes & fried pickle appetizers- excellent! I could take off a star for the mac, but it's only my opinion. Others may like Velveeta thick cheese with spiral noodles, but it's not my favorite. I suggest going early. It was Saturday, & by the time we left at 6, they were already closing, as they had sold out of everything. Our food was hot, fresh, & juicy. The staff was cheerful & made sure we were happy with our food. Oh, & there's no kid menu.
