Review Hogan's Hideaway - Rochester

My wife and I are new to the area. We were driving around and hungry and stumbled upon The Hideaway by chance. It was our first time there, and it will DEFINITELY not be the last time. The food is SO good, and the prices are incredible. Great drinks as well. My mom is visiting in a couple of weeks, and we're going to bring her to Sunday brunch. I highly recommend this restaurant!

Just recently reserved the private room for a dinner for a non-profit board that I'm part of. It was a fantastic experience overall. The restaurant was amazingly responsive to email, great about checking in, and even arranging for parking next door. Everyone in our group was so impressed. The food was great and reasonably priced and the staff was attentive and friendly.

I enjoyed a absolutely perfect lunch on a Saturday afternoon at Hogan's Hideaway. The service was friendly and accommodating. My food, the steak and brie sandwich, was beyond delicious. Unfortunately, we we're to full for dessert, they had a wonderful selection. I highly recommend this restaurant. I intend to return to try some of their desserts.

The Hideaway catered our August 2021 wedding and we are so thankful that we chose them! Max and the team were absolutely amazing to work with and the food was delicious and affordable (anti pasta display pictured). So many of our guests complimented the food! We even had our small rehearsal dinner in the private room in the back of the restaurant which was wonderful. Thank you so much to Max and everyone at the Hideaway that helped make our wedding day so great!

This was my second visit to The Hideaway. The food is delicious and the cocktails are fantastic! Parking can be a bit tricky in this area but not impossible. Such a charming place with a friendly vibe!

We came up to visit our student for a concert and was looking for something nice but not outrageous. This place was amazing! The food was delicious, the prices were reasonable, especially for what we got and the service was wonderful. My gluten free husband had plenty of options as well. Our waitress was outstanding. We will definitely be back!

Loved the atmosphere..the food was absolutely amazing. I tried some dishes that I normally would not select during a regular outing..nothing less than on point. Please consider for catering your events. Well organized, they listen to your needs, and are particular concerning the quality of your food after delivery.

Went for dinner last Friday, even though we were one of the last tables of the night we never felt rushed and our server was a doll. The food was great (one of the best fish fry's I've had in Rochester) and the cocktails were awesome as well. Atmosphere is warm and inviting as ever. Love this spot.

Although I was skeptical at first, once I walked in I was astounded. The atmosphere was homely and the staff was polite. I had ordered the Brie burger and it was the best burger I've ever tasted. The appetizer was warm Brie as well and it was phenomenal. I was annoyed with the wait (15+ mins for apps) but was blown away when I tasted the food. Definitely worth the cost and wait and I will definitely be going here again.

Took 9 hard to please senior citizens to lunch here yesterday. They were raving about the food. "The best crispy chicken sandwich I've ever had."--One 95 year old. "I want the recipe for this French Onion Soup. It's fantastic"--One 84 year old. Not only was the food spectacular, the service was too. Our server, Curt, was attentive, polite, personable and accommodating. The only slight hiccup for us was that the restroom is up about 6 stairs, and some of us struggle with stairs. That won't stop us from coming back, though. We'll definitely keep this one on our list of places to return to.

Have been here for brunch and dinner and food was fantastic at both. Recently held a rehearsal dinner here for my sons wedding for 20 people and could not have been happier. The food, service, and ambiance was perfect. Would highly recommend - was a great experience and everyone was very happy.

We used the Hideaway catering for our wedding November 2022. Max, the owner, spent ample time on the phone with me planning the menu & checked in monthly. We got 2 tastings at the restaurant to really pick what we wanted & Max would sit and chat. He even came day of our wedding to say congratulations! His wait staff were polite & friendly to us and our guests and the chef was great. We heard nothing but great things about the food from everyone & there was plenty of food for everyone.

WOW this place has changed since I was last here. It's definitely fancier than the older Hogan's. The food was excellent although pricy. Loved our server Brandon.

We hired The Hideaway to cater our wedding on August 10, 2019. We worked with Max Gordon, the owner. He and The Hideaway are new to the catering business and there were no official reviews on them as caterer available for us to read beforehand. However, Max was very professional, personable, responsive, and energetic when meeting with him and corresponding via email and the food was very good at the tasting in the restaurant which is why we took a chance on them for our wedding. Additionally, The Hideaway has been a Rochester staple for years and we wished to make our wedding as Rochester and close to home as possible. Unfortunately, our expectations were not met and we were left feeling embarrassed on our wedding day while eating food that we would not have enjoyed at any restaurant let alone our own wedding.

Cocktail Hour: The charcuterie board was decent but nothing exceptional or extravagant. The passed appetizers (pigs in a blanket, arancini, and bacon wrapped scallops) were fair. They were all slightly to moderately overcooked and lacked flavor. The arancini especially was bland and was not passed with dipping sauce, which was different than what we had at the tasting.

Dinner: First, the plated salads were simple iceberg lettuce with bland oil dressing that ended up being soggy. For main courses we had sirloin steak with fingerling pototoes and roasted vegetables, salmon with rice and roasted vegetables, chicken French, and braised cauliflower. The braised cauliflower was soggy and more overcooked with less seasoning than we had at the tasting. The salmon, which we did not get to taste at the tasting, was overcooked and bland. The “sirloin steak” was essentially a roast beef stranded with more fat than there was meat and without any seasoning (We were not provided this to try at the tasting so this was the most shockingly embarrassing to see and have our guests eat). The roasted vegetables (zucchini and squash) were overcooked and soggy, very unlike the tasting where they were sliced thin and cooked perfectly. The rice was overcooked and some bits were hard. The fingerling roasted potatoes at the tasting were roasted with olive oil, salt, and I believe rosemary – regardless the potatoes are part of what sold us on the food as we have been to many weddings where the potatoes were bland without butter or salt available so we did not want that for our wedding. However, that is exactly what we got – dry potatoes without any flavoring whatsoever.

Late Night: We had pretzels and mini passed garbage plates. The pretzels were very good and received many compliments. They were all gone so were a great hit. Unfortunately, we were so busy that we did not get to eat the garbage plates ourselves but we did receive good reviews from guests who indulged.

Max was present during our reception, which was a plus to see that he is invested in his business and his clients. When I spoke to him in the moment about being disappointed in our main courses, he assisted with finding salt and pepper to pass around to all of our guests and he also brought complimentary chocolate fondue as an apology.

Overall, the food for cocktail hour and late night along with Max’s presence and personality are what are keeping this from being a 1 star review. We wish him the best in this new endeavor and see the potential that he and The Hideaway have. Unfortunately, we cannot positively recommend them for wedding catering at this time due to our experience.

Brunch food was decent, service was sluggish, but the nail in the coffin: mediocre Bloody Mary’s for $10??? And with no drink menu to look at, we were blindsided by that outrageous cost when the bill came
Sal Monilla
Hogan Should Hideaway.... It has indeed been a long and gluttonous winter, packed full of disappointing meals and marginal customer service. Fans and critics alike have yearned for spring's cordial embrace, knowing well its full implications...the return of Sal Monilla! But what breed of culinary calamity could shake off winter's chill and cause me to take to the pen in disgust? The answer: an evening out at Hogan's Hideaway. If I were Hogan I would have hid away long ago. For years this eclectic staple of the Park Ave restaurant scene delighted customers with fresh and whimsical menu items. No longer is this the case. I decided to go with the "berry good for you salad" special in an attempt to lose the spare tire around my mid-section. Nary a berry did I find, and it was special in the way your toddlers art work is special (not at all). The dressing came on the side in a thimble, and much to my disbelief the "extra" thimble I ordered was on the bill. To use one of these tiny dressings for my 15$ salad meal would be like trying to put out a fire with a sneeze. My father ordered a tuna sandwich, poor bastard. It floundered! The bread had full robust flavor of a communion wafer and had that texture that can only come from toasting bread on the counter at 72 degrees for 3 weeks. And what is the deal with the "parking lot" situation? Is this a restaurant or a ball game? Our meal took an exceptionally long time to arrive given the small number of patrons and microwave quality of the food. What I ordered to go (pictured) actually felt lighter than the foam it was in. The old helium salad perhaps. Thanks for setting this piece of lettuce on the grill and spilling your taco in a box...Here's 10 bucks. On the plus side the water was cold and the waitress was great.

Great place to eat!. One of my favorite restaurants. Theres a great selection of food and drinks, they even accommodate vegetarian/vegan diets. The staff is welcoming and nice and the atmosphere is cool and relaxed. I highly recommend going to this place!
Try their veggie burger, it's the best one in town!

Good place to bring your date!. I ate there a few times.Had some stuffed ravioli that was great. also some Mexican dishes that met the challenge of my appetite. Lunch there was quite and I like that.I recommend this place and plan to return sometime again and again.Crab cakes are great too.

Great atmosphere. Great menu, good food. Friendly wait staff! Tasty and quick!

Love this place but they are sometimes inconsistent with their food. Sometimes the same dish will have two completely different tastes. Good food overall though, I'd recommend it.

Almost there.... Most of our food was delicious... spinach/artichoke dip, chicken with pasta, lentil veggie burger-all were fantastic! Entree starter salad needs some work... service was horrible.

Veggie Burger. Best veggie burger around (says the meat loving reviewer). There's a lot of love put into this patty and the sprouts and dressing seal the deal.

Love.. I love Hogans.Great burgers, soups, and they have a fritatta on the menu. The people are friendly and there is lots of fantastic art work to look at. Plus, they serve dinner til10.

Hogan's used to be so good-. Now they are lucky to be ok.

I used to come here all the time - it's right next to Parkleigh and the food was absolutely delicious. As these past few years have gone by, the quality of the food has taken a steep dive. I ordered the salmon on cedar- when it was brought to my table raw I showed the waiter and asked for a new salmon that has been cooked - he replied that some people like it that way. He took the fish, and came back a few moments later- they had microwaved my meal. The atmosphere is cool, but they need to do some major dusting and cleaning.
Cliff
Good food, small bar area stocked with everything you could want.

Not my "default" anymore, sadly. My favorite indulgence at Hogans was their wedge-cut fries. The new owners have replaced them. You wouldn't think that's such a big deal, but I can't eat at Hogans anymore without feeling disappointed... so I don't eat there anymore.

-----20 Apr, 2009-----

My default restaurant. This place is within walking distance from my house, and it's got a special place in my heart. I love that the menu runs from expensive specialty entrees to cheaper (but well-made) comfort food. Also the beer and wine selection is outstanding. Don't miss the hand-made steak-cut french fries or the homemade salad dressings. (Ask for the dressing on the side, as the salads are frequently kind of watery.) I have been eating here for so long that I can attest to a couple sub-par food experiences (a wilted salad comes to mind), but these were always addressed when I brought up the issue. I have never had a rude waiter or waitress.

WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!. My family and I have had many good meals at Hogans Hideaway. That is why it was the first place I thought of when my brother and his family came from Buffalo to go to the Strong Museum. Well, let me tell you.... we had the waitress from Hell!!! She was rude, service was slow, and our meals arrived staggered. I myself have worked in the restaurant business for 30 years, so I know it's not always easy. However, her attitude and lack of friendliness was not suited to a person in this line of work. She definately left a bad taste in our mouths!!

Food was great. Asked for food to be made in a very specific manner. The chef was able to accompdate without a problem! Decor made no sense, though. But you go to a restaurant to eat not for the wall decorations, right?

It was really bad. Want Coke? Pepsi? Too bad this restaurant serves RC COLA. We walked out on Valentines day after they brought us ONE of our two forty minute off brand rootbeers.Tthey ran out of our meals and told us this ten minutes after we ordered. the menus smelled funny. The floor shakes as people walk by. How was it so packed? We don't get it.

Hogan’s has been on park for over 20 years. It’s got a great little spot next to Parkleigh and on both sides of the building are fabulous murals. Walking into Hogans, you are transported into a neat, slightly funky place. It has the fun quirks of an older
