Spike's Junkyard Dogs

How is it, that I've passed this place over a dozen times since moving here a year ago and never stopped in until now? I was craving a hot dog and my first stop was a gas station on Mineral Spring but they were fresh out. A friend of mine told me to go to 7- eleven and that's when I saw Spike's. I did a u-turn at the 7-eleven and went into Spike's. Oh my goodness, no one told me about the various options for a hot dog. I was a bit overwhelmed but in a good way. The staff was very pleasant and patient with my indecisive behind. I like that they make it as soon as you order it so that you are getting FRESH food. It was 😋!!! The curly fries were nice and crispy and not drenched in oil like a lot of other places. I ordered the patriot dog, which comes with bacon, cheddar cheese and Spike's mustard. My first time trying it and I loved it. There are other hot dog variations that they have there that I want to come back and try. They will be seeing me again, sooner rather than later. If you don't like hot dogs don't worry, they also have wings, pizza and chicken sandwiches that looked good too. They also offer vegetarian hot dogs for no additional cost!!!! I think that's awesome. For disclosure sake we went towards the end of the night (7pm). 1st off the bread: amazing! Fresh baked bread almost like a french baggett used as hot dog roll. And for it to still taste that fresh.... Next the hot dog - good quality, great taste, good snap. However when we ordered instead of cooking fresh hot dogs they put what was left over from the day on a sheet pan and placed them in the oven to warm up. This dried out the skin of the dogs. Not what I was hoping for. Finally the toppings. The meat sauce on their hot weiner special was so overcooked and dark - again seemed as it was on the burner since lunch. Id rather them have told me "Hey its the end of the day and we are running low or the quality is not good because its been out or we are out instead of serving poor quality sauce. I would have passed and ordered something else. The other toppings for their 20 or specialty dogs were good. The restaurant was clean. Im hoping the quality issues were due to the time of day and probably will give them another try for lunch.

Update: 95% of the employees Linda has in her restaurant are SUPERB. However, one man who I believe is her son is not a very good food handler/preparer. He is GREAT behind the register and is pleasant to customers but preparing food is a different story. Yes, he wears gloves but he also touches his face, ears and handles money in between preparing hotdogs. What good are the gloves ?? As a former food service worker, I'm always watching how my food is prepared. I've been a long time customer of 12+ years. Now, I'm not sure that I will be going back.
