COVID-19 REVIEW: If you do your research when coming to Portland this donut shop always comes up as one of the places to stop in, so we did.
Like others have reviewed, the line was formed on the street and they only allowed one person per group to come in and order or basically one person at a time to a register basically at the other side of the door. Wait time was not crazy as donuts are easy to order so don't be discouraged based off of that alone.
We ordered a half dozen donuts which was hard to decide on as many flavors were sold out or overlapped. We ordered the dark chocolate sea salt, lemon, lemon blueberry, maple bacon, and 2 Maine blueberry. The price was steep but I feel you are paying for a touristy experience so you kind of expect the premium.
The donuts were just okay to say the least and were certainly different given they are made out of potatoes. I felt they were oily especially the dark chocolate sea salt and not warm as others have mentioned. I give them 5 stars on presentation and experience but overall a 3 on taste and pricing. The worst donut was the maple bacon it sounds like an adventure but it tasted terrible don't recommend it at all. The best one would have to be the Maine blueberry and the lemon ones had more flavor. Didn't get to try other more popular flavors but as mentioned would recommend for the experience, not necessarily if you are looking for the best donut and that's just being honest.

The best donuts I have eaten! They taste so creamy and mushy because of the sweet potato. I’m gonna visit here soon the next chance I get. The dark chocolate sea salt donut and dark chocolate coconut glazed are the best.

Worth a try. The lines were so long! Even the line to pickup an online order was long. Sold out of quite a few flavors but we managed to get maple bacon (absolutely disgusting), plain maple (just ok), blueberry (good), lemon glazed blueberry (better), and chocolate sea salt (awesome! Tasted like a brownie). Paid almost $31 for 13 donuts so very pricey. They aren’t as sweet as regular donuts which was a plus but they were nothing spectacular like I was expecting.

My husband ordered chocolate donut with vanilla icing. Donut tasted fine but the texture was wrong. Texture was light and fluffy unlike a normal donut that has a dense texture. Potato flour was a little chalky. It was interesting to try but we wouldn’t go back. The place is always busy and we had to wait online.

The Holy Donut on Exchange Street in Portland is an awesome place to get donuts and treats. I am not sure if I have ever had potato based donuts, but they tasted great. I was able to to eat and try multiple flavors and I have not settled on a favorite because they were all so good. This place is very efficient for the amount of people they serve as when I was there the line was out of the door, but I was able to place my order and get everything within ten to fifteen minutes and be on my way. This place has a very laid back and friendly atmosphere and vibe to it. Everyone that works here is very friendly and helpful and patient to get you your order. The Holy Donut is well worth the wait and the cost for the donuts

Maine’s famous ‘The Holy Donut’. A must visit place when around town in Portland. You have to have the potato donut. We tried 6 different varieties of donuts and each of them was wonderful. I personally liked the berry donut.

Don’t leave Portland without trying these donuts. 30% Potato based makes them real hardy. Great flavors and a very popular place. Grab your coffee, breakfast and a donut here. Tons of flavors and gluten free options!

Excellent donuts that are very much worth he wait. I tried the chocolate, maple and berry cannoli donuts pictured here and they were all very good! The chocolate was the best one with a moist interior that complimented the chocolate very well. You can’t go wrong with any of these, they’re all fantastic!
