We came here on a Friday night on this place's reputation. It held up! I'm not a vegetarian, but our meal here was spectacular! Started off with Spring rolls then I had the hot and sour soup entrée. Very good with a nice level of heat. Our server, Haley, was excellent and gave us proper time between dished. Only one blemish, my Chang Thai Beer tasted like sewer water. They might want to upgrade Asian beer selection.

Modest but exceptional menu with lunch, dinner and dessert options. If you have never tried tempeh, tofu or veggie meats, here where you can taste them at their best. Friendliest staff ever. Rustic, avante gard cozy atmosphere. All around magical place with local, fresh and tasty food. Will definitely go again and bring my friends.
My daughter is a vegetarian, so we decided to enjoy dinner at the green elephant before a concert at the State Theatre. I had never dined at a vegetarian restaurant. I had Singapore Noodles because I have visited Singapore before. Even though there was no meat, the meal was very good with sufficient spice as well. I also had a great cup of English Breakfast tea. The service was great, the servers are obviously well trained. I would return without even thinking about a lack of meat, good food is good food, and this meal was obviously thoughtfully created and prepared.
Stopped by Green Elephant yesterday on my way to Portland Head Light and I can honestly say it was the BEST vegan meal I've ever had in my life. The Crispy Wonton appetizer was sensational and the Vietnamese Sandwich superb. I was impressed by the staff, decor, and presentation of each dish. I would highly recommend this place to anyone! I wish this restaurant was in every state so that everyone could discover how truly delicious healthy food can be.
Always a great place for a wonderful vegetarian meal. Love the seasonal options, like warm pumpkin tapioca pudding with pistachios for dessert! Service is always prompt and appropriately attentive even when the place is packed.

Hands down my favorite place to eat when visiting Portland. The food is delicious, I try something different each time I go and have never been disappointed! I always get the Brussel sprouts as an appetizer every time!!! The staff is friendly and attentive and the atmosphere is great!
Just had a bomb take out meal. Recently went vegan. Now I know where my favorite spot to eat will be! Thanks guys
It was the best meal I have e we eaten. The flavor's were awesome. Go get some
Green Elephant is my absolute favorite restaurant in Portland! I have been frequenting the restaurant at least once/week since moving here 3 1/2 years ago. Everything I have eaten has been fabulous, but my favorites are the Brussels Sprouts, the Tofu Tikka Masala, and the Sorbet Trio for dessert. If you have never dined here, definitely give it a try!
LOVE this place. The Thai Basil Fried Rice is to die for.
Recently ate here and had the Vegan Pumpkin Tapioca and it was one of the best desserts we have ever had.
Flavor flavor flavor! And vegetarian to boot! So glad I don't have to drive to Portland, ME to enjoy my favorite pan Asian restaurant
If I could eat every meal like the ones prepared here I would have be a vegetarian like yesterday. Love every single dish I've tried here!!
Wasn't very sure walking into this pure veg/vegan place in Portland Downtown .And being the only meat eater being convinced/forced by other non meat eaters in the gang didn't help the cause either.
But wow...Was I in for a super lip smackingly yummy surprise.Just fell in love with their tofu tikka masala.. it was just awesome very very authentic Thai/ Asian super yum... Highly recommended. Also tried local mushroom bowl with all sort of mushrooms thrown over a brown rice bowl would be a must try for mushroom lovers like me.
Well guys u just might have me converted to veg/vegan ( naa... Not yet... Just not yet...), But nonetheless no doubts about this restaurant.. can't wait to get back to have tofu tikka and probably try Penang and peanut curry rice.
Abhi...
Great food large portions you have to try the roti it is fresh and amazing!
Yummy but unexpectedly expensive. Trying to visit multiple indian lunch buffets this summer. compared with others in the area, the food here is slightly better. however, items that are free other places cost you an upcharge here. for example, an order of naan cost $5, and raita $3. good nonetheless.
So many delicious options!. This is easily the best vegetarian/vegan place to eat in Portland! My wife and I have come here twice now, and loved it each time.
We came for lunch on our more recent occasion. We started with the brussel sprouts appetizer, and they were THE BEST we've ever had! In fact, all of the other tables around us ordered it as well. For $7, it's a little expensive, but they also were the best sprouts we've ever had.
For our entrees, I had the Thai Ginger Noodle, while my wife had the Tempura Asparagus salad. Although I'm not a big fan of tofu, the Thai Ginger Noodle was very tasty (the fried egg in it made it a little more tasty to me). My wife loved her dish as well! And for $20 for the two, it is a great value.
We highly recommend this place to any and everyone!
Favorite!. This is my absolute favorite restaraunt in Portland. Great service, AMAZING food. The food also comes out very quickly. The presentation is great as well. Even the carnivores in my family love this place!
I love this place!. I moved away from Portland, Maine over two years ago and when I go back there to visit, I always stop by The Green Elephant. You know that song about wanting to go where everybody knows your name? Well that song comes to life when I step into The Green Elephant. This place used to be my stomping grounds, and I miss it very much! In fact, it's what I miss MOST about Portland, Maine. The staff is friendly, and they take notice if you go in there frequently. When I'd call in my order over the phone, they would know who I was without even saying my last name. I have never felt more well-received at any restaurant I have ever been to. If you have the chance to go to The Green Elephant, do it! I promise that you will not regret it!
Fantastic!!. Ate here for the first time this week and we could not have been more pleased! Wonderful choice of vegetarian foods. Our meals were perfect with fresh, crunchy veggies and perfect spices. Brown jasmine rice instead of white. Fast and attentive service. Will return often!!
Limited gluten free options. The Green Elephant is a trendy vegetarian Thai restaurant, serving up as much local stuff as they can. They had a couple gluten free options on the menu, and I didn't get sick, so that is always a plus! Overall, I enjoyed it and would return.
Great atmosphere. Friendly service. Veggies are very fresh and the Far East Duck is as good as advertised. Don't let the omnivore inside prevent you from trying this place.
Love it!!!! Easily my favorite in portland, always good.
Far East Duck. Delicious!
Fast and friendly service, very relaxing atmosphere, even my meat loving husband left full and happy! Ask for a recommendation from your server - ours made three great choices for us.
Delicious!. Service was prompt and very friendly. The food was great! I don't remember the name of the appetizer we had but it consisted of apples and an array delicious flavors and textures that blew me away. I couldn't get enough! My main course was steamed veggies with peanut sauce with a mix of tofu and soy meat. The taste of tofu and soy meat took a bit to get used to but my plate was soon clean. I had never been to a vegetarian restaurant and was skeptical but my mind was definitely changed. YUM!
Green Elephant in downtown Portland, ME is fresh, tasty and delicious Thai vegetarian food. Yum.
AMAZING!. I would love to work in this kitchen for 2 weeks!
I have eaten my way through their menu and can not say enough about what wonderful, refreshing and healthy food...
The chocolate dessert, the name escapes me, has BLOWN me away!!! It is a must!
Great food. I thought the food was excellent. I can't believe vegetarian food can taste this great. I was not impressed with the service though. Our waitress was snotty and did not take a drink order. But it wasn't terrible service.
Healthy food that is actually good!!. I am not a vegetarian and usually hate vegetables. However, I always love Green Elephant. Don't be intimidated like I was by their vegan menu - dishes are surprisingly tasty.
If I was stranded on a desert island with three food choices to live out my days, the Asparagus Tempura Salad from Green Elephant would make the cut. It is a must have every time I go there.
We ate three different entrees and they were all amazing. I loved it all.
A Jade Jewel. A small and sorta sleek pan-Asian vegetarian focused establishment. Although average all around, from selection to staff, it fills the niche quite nicely.
Each time I dine at Green Elephant I find even more reasons to return. Their food is inventive and packed with flavor, the prices are reasonable, and the ambiance is great.
It would only be a slight stretch to say that the Roti Canai at Green Elephant seduced me into moving to Portland. At the time of my first bite, I knew nothing about the fabulous food scene awaiting me here. I just knew that the Indian flatbread was the b
What a great find in the heart of Portland. I can’t say how much we enjoyed the food, atmosphere, and friendly staff. We shared the Spicy Green Leaves Salad, which could’ve been a meal in itself. I had the Steamed Vegetables with Peanut Sauce. The main entrée had broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, zucchini, corn, snow peas, carrots, green beans and steamed tofu. The quality and quantity was excellent. Highly recommended!
I've been meaning to try this place for years and today we took an unplanned trip finally and wow was it incredible. I ordered the Panang Curry Vegetable & tempeh and my fiance got the spicy veggie stir fry with chive dumplings to start ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The flavors were ✨amazing✨ and the food was so colorful and fresh. Cooked to perfection and mine had juusst the right amount if spicy for me (they ask you your level 1-5 which I really appreciated. I'm a baby when it comes to heat so I got like a 1 1/2 haha my fiance got his at a 3, said he could have gone a bit higher but it was still incredible). I didn't get to try to dumplings because I'm celiac but my fiance loved them. We got seated quickly, the service was super pleasant and attentive. Oh, and for anyone else living that sober life, they have a great mocktail menu, the pomegranate mojito was delicious!! Cannot wait to come back again.
i loved it! we split the green curry and the fried rice with soy-sauge and my partner who isn’t a vegetarian also really liked them! i had a decent pinot grigio. service was good! one of the best vegetarian restaurants i’ve been to in new england 😊
Would definitely recommend. My husband ordered tempura mushrooms and green curry, I ordered spring rolls and Panang curry. We both loved what we ordered! The curries had lots of fresh veggies and thick creamy coconut milk with optional spice levels. We ordered a chocolate orange mousse pie for dessert and it was lovely and not too sweet. The presentation for all dishes was very well done and our waitress Juliet was very pleasant and prompt with delivery and clearing our plates. We will definitely come back again!
So good!! If you are looking for vegetarian or vegan food-or just want something really tasty, I recommend The Green Elephant! My husband and I shared the vegetable dumplings, which were phenomenal. I also had a cup of the Green Elephant tea, which was comforting and fragrant. I had the Tikka Masala and it was very delicious and flavorful. Excellent and attentive service too, thank you for a great meal and evening, Green Elephant!
Ohhhhhh boy! I am a happy camper! Do yourself a favor and try the drumsticks from the appetizer menu! I actually laughed out loud after taking a bite because I was in disbelief over how in tarnation some geniuses out there managed to create a vegan chicken drumstick that mimicked the real thing so well. I promise you’ll hardly tell the difference. It was incredible. I need a mini documentary about the creation process please. Nothing I tried at The Green Elephant came even close to disappointing. The Green Elephant is a vegetarian/vegan’s heaven. So glad this place exists. I left wobbling down the cobblestone streets of Portland with a grin across my face and a very round food baby. Until we meet again! ☺️ (Friendly staff was a bonus)
Truly 5 star experience. Great waitstaff, kept us hydrated and the food was great. Had the spring rolls, vegan pad Thai, and vegan spare rib meal with veggies. The seitan tasted like the real thing if that’s what you’re looking for! They also ask which spice level you like, 1-4.
Truly one of the best gourmet Thai restaurants I’ve ever eaten at. Their curry puffs are to die for, perfectly cooked on the inside, crispy on the outside and loaded with flavor. Comes with a brilliant sweet n spicy sauce. Perfect as an appetizer and as desert. The service is nothing short of awesome.
