Review Devil's Dill - Portland

Caitlin Gonzales
Random sandwich shop pit stop. Hearty sandwiches for big size hunger. Same bread used for all so variance of ingredients is warranted otherwise the flavors all bleed together. Room for improvement all around, but appreciate their heavy use of kale and combos. No restroom, no water station. Counter service and HOT outside patio dining.

Updated review Aug 2023: Still the best sandwich I've ever had. Prices have gone up a bit but still worth the trip from Olympia, WA. Original review July 2022: Took a day trip down to Portland. While there got a recommendation from a local store owner saying this was one of the best sandwich shops in town. Being skeptical we hesitantly decided to stop by. So glad we did! One of best sandwiches we've had in a long time. The place is not much to look at. Just a hole in a wall along a busy street with many store fronts but man... what an experience! Had the pulled pork sandwich. Ciabatta bun, perfectly toasted. Meat was tender and super flavorful. The BBQ sauces wasn't anything I've tasted before. The slaw also gave a bit of sweet & savory crunch in just the right places. Unique flavor and spot-on for a pulled pork if that's what you are in to. Just a fantastic sandwich overall. Didn't care for the pickles although we could tell they were homemade. Nothing wrong with them, just not our taste in pickles. We asked the gentleman at the counter what his favorite is. Said the #5 followed closely by the #1- pulled pork. Although a bit pricey, still highly recommend this sandwich shop. The To-go menu flyers doesn't reflect their new prices so go by the pic I took of the menu inside the store.

Part of Devil's Dill's charm comes from their unassuming punkrock store front. Write on the walls while you wqit for your dope sandwich Everyrhing here slaps. I get the #5 with a side of the sauted kale. My homie loves the #3 with the genuine german potato salad Because they are the good portal for the next door bar (NO FUN) they end staying open super late During the day, they are one of several excellent sandwich spots on the eastside, by midnight, they are the absolute best food in town

It's a simple sandwich shop with around 12 options, but the sandwiches are genuinely excellent. I had the pulled pork sandwich, which was delicious. I also sampled the grilled asparagus, which was also great.

I would willingly throw up a $100 meal just to make room for one of these sandos, hearing the word “devil” in any context make my mouth water for the pavlovian response is real. If they called upon me, i would march into battle against any other sandwich shop in town. If i had a last meal on death row, it would be dealers choice off the menu here.

I have to visit this place every single time I come to Portland. I’m obsessed with their No. 5 and even after trying to recreate it from home, it didn’t come even close. Their prices are super reasonable given the quality. I dig their minimalist but also grungy vibe a lot. Must try at least once.

My quintessential PDX late night sandwich spot. The sandwiches are always amazing even when it's not their best night. With it being connected to No Fun, some nights can be kind of crazy and you can see it on the staff's face. But fear not, just tip well (they like a variety of goodies if you're a fan of the barter system) and they tend to be cool and will hook it up. Either way, worth making it a part of your late night repertoire. Update: Service from the staff at No Fun is kind of hit or miss. If you get served by the guy who looks like Caveman Sam from Trailer Park Boys, check your change and be prepared to wait.

One of the most under-hyped sandwich shops in the city. Always, try the monthly special. I've been pleasantly surprised by a few different unique sandos. That said, my go-to is the #4: red wine braised beef, onions, peppers, horseradish aioli. Delish. Veggie and vegan options. Gluten free available.

Great sandwiches that you can get super late. Had to order my sandwich in the bar next door but it was such a neat place with live music and local art. Sandwich was fantastic larger than I expected.

I love sandwiches and this place has some great options! The Special is always unique and flavorful, the regular menu items are delicious and creative as well. I had the meatloaf sandwich on my last visit and loved it. The bread is perfect. Extra fun to go when there is a band playing next door!

Got the Italian, with extra meat, was honestly insanely good. Was skeptical, but Kale is marinated so not chewy at all. I did add extra olive oil since the fresh chiabatta does make for a dryer sandwhich. The other half got pulled pork and liked it a lot! Def going back.

I’ve been coming here off and on for years now. My favorite and go-to is the No.4. They’ve always got pretty dope specials too. The prices are kinda rough but they make up for it in quality. You get what you pay for in this case I suppose. I take my friends here whenever I get the chance and show them just how bomb a sandwich can be. Cheers!

Amazing bread and fantastic flavors! The bread has a sublime crunch on the outside and is soft and airy on the inside! It opens late in the day so we had to try a few times before we could fit it in but it was worth it! If you are looking for a late night sandwich this is definitely the place to go!

This was a delicious sandwich. I would 100% recommend it. Seating was a little limited but that's just the kind of place it is, and I would say it adds to the charm. It's definitely very "Portland" which should give you an idea of whether or not you want to stop by (you do).

Took one bite while waiting for friends, and had to slam the rest of the sandwich like one of the possessed. So delicious. The staff were rad and laid back, with quick and friendly service. I’m mourning the years of living in Portland without knowing about this awesome spot.

First time customer. I ordered the turkey, salami and special sandwiches, potato salad, side salads, soup of te day, sautéed kalepickles for delivery. Ended up getting all the sides but they ended up giving me two salami sandwiches and totally omitting the third. Missing 2/3 of the sandwiches is pretty bad but the sandwich i got was really really good so it’s worth a second chance. Pickles tasted kinda weird but I’ve never tried that brand. The sautéed kale was pretty good otherwise the sides were average.
