Although John Street Cafe has undergone some management changes, the owners have by and large left the menu in place. Still super solid food at a reasonable price.
Still one of my favorite breakfast and lunch places in all of pdx.

The best brunch place!! Delicious food and great service!
The food was simply amazing! Flavors were well balanced, fresh ingredients, and not greasy at all. The outdoor eating area was very charming... Like eating in a garden surrounded by nature. Service was outstanding! Best breakfast ever!
The hostess was incredible and food was great. Can wait until I come back through and visit them again.
Customer service was on point. The man who served us was kind and great with my kiddo. Food was great and reasonably priced.
Will go again
I am embarrassed to say that I have lived near this place since they opened and had never set foot inside. The line out the door deterred me, but that won't happen again! I had one of the specials which was a crab omelet with green sauce, accompanied by potatoes and wheat toast. Also yummy raspberry and Marion berry jams. Don't forget the fresh squeezed orange juice too.
Everything was excellent!
Excellent big breakfast here! Biggest pancakes I have ever seen.
Great neighborhood restaurant! The omelettes are delicious and have great service!
I go here nearly every weekend. Saturday lunches on the patio are wonderful!
A favorite! Their omelets are the best!
Cute local American fare breakfast spot.
This is a perfect location for a lazy Sunday brunch. Or if you have family staying at your place and you live in St John's come here to save yourself cleaning dishes and let John Street Cafe take care of you.
They have all the staples for breakfast and a huge board of specials.
If you're local to North Portland this place is a good spot for last minute brunch.
I have only had breakfast here, but mostly because this is the place I think of when I want to go out to breakfast. Make sure and view the specials board when you visit. My best breakfasts have been ordered off of it. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating. I love that the outdoor seating is dog friendly. Service can be a little slow during busy times, but I think all restaurants struggle to get staffing these days.
My go-to items... scrambled eggs with asparagus, bacon and brie cheese, lemon-ricotta pancakes with blueberries, and the marinated chicken omelet with Italian sausage, cream cheese and sauce.
The veggie eggs benedict and the ham benedict were excellent as usual. We also had the brie scramble (excellent) and the vrab omelette ( which could have used a bit more spice).
We’ve been to this place about 3 times during and after COVID. We liked the food in the past and we like the food now. Many choices of wonderful omelettes and good quality food. But the reasons for only 4 stars are the atmosphere, warmth and service of the place are just not quite there. In terms of atmosphere: the place could be so much better if it took more from the iconic location that it is in (St. John’s) and developed more of a personality around that. A little soft music wouldn’t hurt. In terms of warmth: I think if it had a more defined personality the warmth would come after but the servers would have to match it. In terms of service: it really isn’t that bad but then again, our server had not warmth and no personality. There was an older lady that came out from the back at one point and she seemed more smilie and cheerful. Someone like her as a front face would be great. Other than that it is a good place and has potential to be even better.
Delicious food and drinks. We had a good experience here. Atmosphere is nice but can get a little stuffy.
On the road for almost two weeks and FINALLY found a breakfast cafe worth the praise! EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING was perfect. Food, a great cup of coffee and a server who knew how to make us feel welcomed and taken care of.
This place is a hidden gem for breakfast and brunch. I loved the omellette selection you can customize to your liking. The drip coffee was one of the best I tried so far in many of the similar local places. It was so smooth and low in acidity that no milk or cream was needed. The condiments served are also of high quality and are tasty. Staff is very friendly and provide good service - something hard to find during the post-covid days in many restaurants as I am finding out. Prices are also very reasonable. I will definitely keep this wonderful place on my list of places to visit again.
I have been coming to this place a few times - a great restaurant in the neighborhood. Weekly chef creations and specials in addition to regular menu items. Friendly staffs. Outdoors seating is great during the pandemic, both backyard and along the street with tables that seat 2-4 people. I usually come here for breakfast and lunch. Food is nicely presented and packed for takeouts.
A star off of atmosphere, but only because I'm old-fashioned.
This place makes consistently good food and has attentive service without being pushy.
I dig their offerings and the location can't be beat, right in the middle of St Johns.
Check 'em out, sez me.
My friend and I were looking for a nice place for a late breakfast, and found this little spot on our drive.
The portion is immense! I ordered a green chili omlet, and it was packed with cheese and beans. But also the plate had half slices of roasted small red potatoes, 4 half loaf slices of wheat bread, and two hearty slices of orange.
I only barely finished the omlet, had to have the potatoes togo. But they will be amazing in a few hrs heated up.
Go. Enjoy a quiet breakfast.
Fantastic little breakfast place in St Johns. Been there for years. A little slow when crowded, so you might need to wait for service if it's very busy. Worth the wait for a delicious breakfast though.
I’ve been to John Street Cafe so many times, it’s hard to choose another restaurant for breakfast. I’m a long-time fan. I can count on the food to be consistently delicious—currant hazelnut pancakes — so good! — fresh orange juice, strong coffee. The garden is a sweet outdoor alternative to an artful interior. I wish I lived next door to John Street Cafe—I can’t recommend it highly enough. Go there!
This venue has a unique breakfast flavor arrangement. It was nice to see a high end assembly of the creative menu choices. I enjoyed the modern impressionistic art that warmed the walls inviting an escape to sophistication.
We greatly enjoyed our first breakfast here! Big slices of fruit, real potatoes, a human sized omelet and a giant pancake with crunchy filberts. Thanks so much, we hope to be regard.
Had lunch at John Street cafe and ordered the tuna salad. It was incredible!! The tuna steak was cooked perfectly on top of fresh vegetables.(it had cooked zucchini-yum). Finally a portion size that fits the price. The customer service is always above and beyond. It is one of my favorite breakfast places and now I would go back there for lunch.
Very nice 👍 absolutely delicious. I was very satisfied with my meal. You will have to find parking on the street. But I did notice in the main dining room a lot of fly's . I was constantly swatting them away from my plate. That's was no fun.
Wow what a wonderful breakfast! Adorable courtyard seating, very friendly and helpful servers, the entire menu is just lovely. We enjoyed Brie scrambled eggs with bacon and eggs over easy with Italian sausage…just wow! Eggs perfectly cooked and the bacon and sausage just so flavorful and crispy. Both served with delicious roasted potatoes and wheat toast with jam. We were seriously so happy with everything. Thanks for a great experience!
Great spot for brunch/breakfast. It was our first time visiting and certainly don't be our last. We definitely enjoyed it. Cute little place, nothing too fancy but food was great. We had the special, chicken cilantro omelete as well as the spinach bacon omelete and the special blueberry pancake. Everything was soo good. Potatoes were yummy and the omletes were cooked perfectly with tasty salsa on top. Definitely a good spot to check out.
