Solid 4+ star place. I usually get the chicken katsu curry and my wife gets the mackrel off the lunch menu.
Lunch is till three, good sushi and specialty/seasonal items.
Prices have gone up in recent times. The place is also a little “cozy” so try to go before or after the rush.
Service has always been good, food was good to great depending on what you get.
Sushi is solid and the donburi bowls are great for a small meal. Try the Jalapeño tempura popper!

I've seen this place, around the corner from my hotel for weeks now, and finally I committed to trying it out. It's a low key place, no flare, minimal service, and a promise for good sushi. And that's exactly why I went.
The items I ordered were Hakutsuru Junmai Ginjo sake, the Salmon Platter special which included a total of six sashimi or nigiri style (2 ea) Atlantic Salmon, Alaska Wild Salmon, and New Zealand Wild Salmon and also the Alaska Makic roll.
The Sake was mild, a little creamy, served cold. But to my immature pallet it seemed flat - like a flat soda. Maybe that's what it's supposed to taste like, I really don't know. It was good but I'd probably not order it again, rather I'd try another sake.
The salmon nigiri platter was great. I loved the New Zealand salmon, it was fatty, clean, and very flavorful. Order it. The Atlantic and Alaska salmon were also very great, clean tasting and very satisfying.
The one thing to note here is that the sushi chef (at least the one on Monday night) likes to put a little bit of wasabi in everything. I didn't mind it, it still tasted great, but I would've liked a little heads up or the option to opt out of it.
I'd probably pass on the Alaskan Maki roll, it was alright. It didn't scream game changer or amazing.
I would certainly go back to Koji Osakaya again. It was a relaxing place where the service will be there when you need them and a quite place to chill for an evening.

Walked past this small Japanese restaurant, after eating at another earlier on today. Food looked good so I came back here for an evening snack, glad I did
Friendly staff and really fresh fish
Obviously there are plenty of options for sushi in Portland, I’ll be coming back here again!!
Well worth the drop in

Good sushi! I got two of the special rolls Zilpha (salmon, cucumber, jalapeno, topped with avocado) and the scorpion roll (don't remember what's in it but tempura style with spicy mayo) this location is small but we weren't going for the ambiance. I'd recommend eating here! Cost was about ~$20

My favorite Japanese restaurant in all of Portland, I usually go at least twice a month. The food is amazing, and the staff is awesome. The lunch combinations are a great deal if you're not sure exactly what you're in the mood for.

They gave us hot green tea while we waited for our takeaway! Ordered the Queen and Twice the Spice specialty tools rolls, plus octopus balls appetizer.

YAAAAASSSSSSS! We started at another spot and weren't satisfied with their sushi menu. When we got to Koji Osakaya we were delighted with the variety. The atmosphere was much more inviting. The staff was nicer too. Once we got our food we loved this place even more. Definitely recommend & will be returning.

The food was good. Fish was fresh, the rice was properly seasoned. The Chirashi dish had a good amount of a variety of fish as well as a good proportion of rice. The inari sushi was very good. I was told this location has been in business over 30 years which says to stay around this long it has to be good and authentic.

Five stars food for regular prices. Great service and perfectly cooked food. Broad variety of sushi which are well served. My white fish bento lunch was really tasty.

Very slow service for the food but TOTALLY worth it. Fresh wasabi! They offer a basic menu but do what they know right!

They have amazing Japanese food! I loved the Chicken Katsu Curry and the Miso Katsu!
Update: the Yakiniku Donburi is DELICIOUS.

I live to eat in hidden gems when I travel. This is definitely a hidden gem. Not much to look at or for atmosphere, but the food more than make a up for it. Delicious and will definitely return again next time I'm in Portland!

Best food in town. Love the lunch menu. Prices are very reasonable.

Japanese hot noodle tastes good. Dont recommend sushi, rice is cold and too dry.

One of my gotos for over a decade now. Always fall back to the tonkatsu lunch or vegetable corn ramen with pork bone broth.

I've been here four or five times and had really enjoyable food all but once. I like the miso soup touch, the house salad is refreshing, tempura is fresh and tasty... I do know that the sushi here is good too. Not spectacular, but solidly good & clean.

This was our third visit to this restaurant in less than six months indicating that we have found it to be a stable, reliable location for quality sushi and more. It’s very convenient downtown next to where we shop regularly (Pioneer Square) and the service is quick and efficient. Our only complaint is often one must wait to sit and/or eat in a rather crowded environment. This place received maximum stars on the quality of its food alone.

Stumbled upon this restaurant while visiting Portland. Good food. Fair prices. Very small dining area though. Would recommend it though. Sushi was excellent!

This place makes udon the right way! I got lost looking for bonsai and I'm very happy I stumbled here instead! Just like the noodles I enjoyed in Japan!!!
John Balouris
As someone who has studied Japanese for approaching two decades, this seems to be the most authentic Japanese restaurant in Portland.
Dave Langley
Great food, wish it was much closer, but we will be back again when in town
