Excellent food and awesome customer service. We enjoyed the chicken Kati roll, Gobi Manchurian, Goan-Style Shrimp, but the Pork Vindaloo was the absolute best!!! I'd fly 4 hours just for that! This place is a must stop if you are visiting Portland or if you live here, a weekly must have!
Loved it..tried the pork vindaloo which was on point, the chicken curry and Goan shrimp. Lamb samosas, beef kati roll and bhel puri were really good too.
This food is so freaking good, and they were good about the whole no gluten thing - knowledgeable about the menu.
Wada pav and chaha feel like home. Their specials menu is wonderful as well. They should consider bringing Dahi Wada on their regular menu, it's superb. Love the atmosphere and attention to detail.
Amazing Indian food and happy staff. I almost ordered everything on the menu. All were good. Drinks were tasty as well.
Nice people great service ! The food was absolutely fantastic .! The pork Vindaloo was outstanding!
Fun, comfy, casual atmosphere. Yummy food. Nice wait staff.
The food is amazing but the staff is truly awesome. I will continue to go back primarily because the people who work there are so amazing. I went there yesterday and left really happy.
Great food and great atmosphere! Lamb samosas to die for and really delicious paneer makhani. Everything we are was great!
This is by far the most interesting place serving Indian food! I absolutely loved the decor and the food is outstanding. You can’t stop yourself, it is that good! A must visit for everyone 💖
Great ambience. Good service. Awesome food . I was surprised to find close to authentic Indian street food in Portland. It's a definite pit stop for sub continental asians . It's a great treat to your palette. The roasted corn cob and kathi roll are my personal favorites. It has a wide range of vegetarian varieties . Vegan guys this place can offer you many good options. Can't wait to visit again .
Authentic Indian Street Food with a mix of Bollywood Ambience.. This is a must visit place for everyone, whether you have tried Indian cuisines in past or not. You are definitely going to love it. And Don't worry nothing is too spice for your taste buds. I will not recommend any specific dish because whatever I tried there from Kathi Rolls to Aloo Tikki to Pao Bhaji, Paratha Chole, everything was excellent. I was in Portland for 2 days only still I managed to have 4 meals in Bollywood Theatre. Here is a BIG THUMBS UP to the team for bringing up a place like this
Have heard a lot about this place, and it didn't disappoint us. We arrived around 6 in the evening, and the queue was till the street. After waiting for 30 mins, we were able to place our order and got a seat (in this restaurant, one needs to order first and then take a table, servers do not take order at the table). The ambiance is fantastic, reminds of old hindi movies, houses, stores, etc.
We had pav bhaji (super good), paneer makhani (again super good), tikki chat (average, need more chatni and spices), coconut dal (pathetic as had spinach n big carrots, that were not going well with dal), with paranthas (highly recommended). My non veg friends got keema samosa n prawns which they loved. Among drinks, ginger lime was the best, mango lassi was close second, plain lassi lacked sweetness though.
Just come here. The food is really yum. Authentic indian snacks. Had pav bhaji, bhel puri, vada pav and above the all, the masala chai. Too good. Dont think before coming here. Worth a place.
Ask the staff what they'd eat. They always give the best recommendations! Best values: Kati roll (huge portion for the price!) and pork vindalu w buttered rolls (I fantasize about these!). Also the drinks are tasty but a bit pricey.
Absolutely loved the ambience of Bollywood theatre. Gives you the feeling of sitting at a roadside restaurant in India. Had the Pav bhaji and vada Pav. The patty of the vada Pav was very nice but the sauces overpowered the patty. Overall great attempt to recreate Indian street food.
Three of us came here late night and ordered three dishes we ordered the kati paani, the potato samosa chola and the dahripapri chaat....they were all very solid 4 to 5 stars
Jumping on the Hurray For Bollywood Bandwagon. There is something about hanging and snooping around Alberta Street that stirs memories from my increasingly distant past about similar entertaining areas in San Diego...Ocean Beach, Mission Beach, and Pacific Beach. Kind of funky, interesting, and full of some great places to tie on the old feedbag....even if this Portland area is devoid of a nearby ocean. Having meant to give Bollywood Theater (hereinafter "BT") a try, it suddenly popped onto our horizon as we were taking a pre-lunch stroll down the Alberta St., doing active recon for our mid-day meal....sort of our version of hunting, but without the guns.
I have read the myriad of positive reviews of BT on Urbanspoon , and I must say that after dining there, I pretty much agree with most of the expressed buzz. Initially, the shock of a line out the door is off-putting. But the ordering taking process is truly efficient, and the line moves quickly. The tough thing here is to whittle down your order to a managable size, given the many interesting choices available. I was mindful of a master reviewer's previous bad salinity experience with the Pork Vindaloo, so I took a different pathway to culinary nirvana. Order up! We started with the Pakoras, stuffed and fried with green tomatoes. I could not immediately give this dish 2 thumbs up because I was to busy dipping them into a very delicious tomato/raisin chutney and placing them ever so non-gently in my mouth. What a dish! Perfectly fried, and stuffed with a very interesting ingredient. After a complete wipeout of this dish, my 2 thumbs drifted skyward towards the heavens. Next up were the Samosas, which also were very good. I think they would be better with the property sauces and chutneys, and here was the only minor problem we encountered. I foolishly and negligently did not order a side of Raita and extra chutneys. What was I thinking? By the time I realized a need for these items, the line to the order cashier was even longer than when we came into the place. So, I pulled up my big boy pants (which would be tighter by meal's end), and tried the hot pepper "chutney" provided at the "get your own utensils and water station." This chutney did not do it for me, as it was too one sided and unbalanced (hot). A dab of the sweet tomato chutney from the Pakoras definitely kick it up a half a notch. Sweet or sour is definitely good with hot.
The Kati rolls are the real deal. In an effort to maintain tranquility in my relationship with a loving non-meat eater, the order was for the Paneer cheese model.... My meatless friend here was so tasty that I forgot for a moment that I would have ordered a meat version if left to my own devices. You definitely will enjoy all aspects of this dish, but especially the wrap cooked on egg prior to the stuff and roll. If you go to BT, and fail to order a Kati Roll of some type, there will be a huge void in your culinary life. Even though I passed on the Pork Vindaloo, I went down the wish list of the same master reviewer, and ordered the Chicken Curry and Goan Style Shrimp. Both dishes, which came with rice, were quite good and strangely... were under salted. Do they read the Urbanspoon reviews? If so, great job! A dash of salt brought the dishes back to a great place. I am always mindful of my favorate teaching chef telling us to taste, taste, taste each dish prior to sending it out. Perhaps that is why chefs get bigger over the years. I could have used some Raita and an order of garlic naan with the dishes, but again that was my fault here.
There were many more items on the menu that I would like to try on the menu, as well as revisiting some of the best past new friends. Maybe, I will even be brave enough to tackle the controversial Pork Vindaloo at some point. The mark of a very good eating establishment is that your plates were strangely so clean that you were shockingly too full to go next store and have ice cream at Salt and Straw! I knew that tasty beer was going to get in the way. Jumping off the BT bandwagon with full bellies is certainly a tougher task, but like Gen. McArthur exclaimed on his departure, "we shall return," although at our age jumping in any upward direction gets a bit more challenging with each day and food cycle.
Insanely good Indian. Just found this place a few weeks ago and have been twice...Bollywood Theater is my new go-to Indian restaurant. The first time we went in, there was a line out the door and we almost skipped it, but I am happy we didn't! The place was packed but the owner runs such an efficient operation that we were able to get our food and drinks within about 20 minutes. Speaking of the owner, we saw him working alongside his staff running food and ensuring guest satisfaction. We would not have known who the owner was had we not checked out the website and watched the video prior to going in (BTW watch it!). I LOVE the Bhel Puri, and the Kati Roll and I haven't found a menu item I have been disappointed with yet. When we went back on our second Indian food fix on a mellow Sunday afternoon we received the same efficient service and excellent food!
Casual Indian. Good place for quick, delicious Indian. Restaurant looks great. Staff are friendly. Love the casual counter ordering.
My only experience has been one night of take-out but I must say I have gazed longingly at the menu many times and finally decided that since the chances of actually having dinner here any time soon are slim to none (my 8 year old despises Indian food), I had better take advantage of my Saturday 'take-out and Netflix with the best friend' rarity to suggest Bollywood!
I am SO glad I did. At first glance I was admittedly a bit disappointed by the portions of the chicken curry thali, as we were sharing the meal along with an order of samosas and beef kati roll. However, once we saw the saw the size of the kati roll (which is large enough on its own to satisfy a reasonable adult) we knew one of our lunches would be covered the following day!
The flavors were fantastic! I will say that the actual portion of chicken curry and rice was quite small for $12 but perhaps that can be attributed to it being take-out on a Friday night; I'm willing to try again. There was nothing that disappointed me in the area of taste however; every bite was bliss! Next time I want to make Indian food and my son begs me not to make the house smell like a Kolkata market for the next week, I know where I'm going!
Por Que No of Indian food.. This place is basically exactly like Por Que No, but for Indian food instead of Mexican. The decor and concept are very much similar. I like how you order at the register, it is casual and affordable.
The beef kati roll is like an Indian burrito. It is INSANELY AMAZING!!! EAT THIS!!! The pork vindaloo was rather plain and uninteresting (which was disappointing since it's the dish they're known for).
All the little side sauces you get are incredible. This place is heavy on the butter/ghee. What I really loved was that I saw three tables of Indian families eating, even though there didn't look to be a single Indian cook behind the stove. I will definitely be going back.
Love me some kati. My boyfriend and I drove all the way from Lake Oswego to try out this street feast of culinary treasures located on Alberta. We started out at Bollywood, getting a free appetizer of CHOLLE (just because our server was freaking awesome), KATI ROLL WITH CHICKEN, SOMOSAS, and GRILLED CORN. The kati roll was one of the best things i've ever put in my mouth. Then, we popped in next door to Salt and Straw and got a split single of PEAR/BLUE CHEESE, BEAST, and SALTED CARAMEL. The salted caramel will forever haunt me. It is one of the best ice creams-- the kind that makes life worth living, but makes it so you can't ever eat ice cream at another establishment for as long as you live - so be careful. And since it was a night of sheer, ridiculous indulgence I also ordered there brownie with marshmallows and crunchy caramel on top..I personally wouldn't recommend it. It was too chalky. I like my brownies slightly crunchy on the outside and gooey/mostly chewy on the inside.
Simply amazing. Best Indian flavors we've had in years. The pork vindaloo, chicken curry and the Kati roll are beautiful dishes.
Goa'nna Have to Give It Another Shot. I read in The Mercury's review that Bollywoods flagship entree is the Pork Vindaloo. If that is true then they best paint the name TITANIC on the mast and hand everyone life preservers. I say this because on a beautiful spring day that actually allowed us to put the top down on our car without fear of rain, we took a cruise up to Alberta, to finally indulge our eastern cravings.
After racing over the menu for a couple minutes we approached the counter and laid it all out: Pork Vindaloo, some Samosas, Julienned Okra, Dal and the Bhel Puri to be accompanied by a King Fisher for me and a Pimms Cup for Lady McStyles. We poured ourselves some water, scooped up some SPICY (you can quote me on that) green chutney and found ourselves a table. Taking in all the eye candy around us I have to admit when the Vindaloo arrived, my heart sank. That might sound melodramatic, something some crybaby on Yelp would write, but I say this because up until this point we were completely blown away by this place. My wife and I often romanticize the idea of opening our own bar or restaurant one day and if we were asked to describe how we would want it to look, rather than try to explain it I would simply say; for the bar, go look at Roadside Attraction. For our restaurant I would advise them to take in Bollywood Theater. This is obviously someones lovechild, which is why it pains me to say something negative about their venture. But it was what it was, and it was not good; that pork vindaloo. Ive had pork vindaloo all over the world (including in India, in Goa, where it was surprisingly hard to find) and this was the first time Ive had it with the brown 'gravy', though I have a recipe for that style at home. So, I was not sure what to expect. I cant rightly call it a sauce because it was very watery and there wasnt much of it. But whatever, its all about the taste. My fork revealed that the pork was ultra tender and needed little prodding to split apart. So I took a stab of it and wiped up some of the sauce, and..... SODIUM Overload!!!!!! Disgusting. Like the lid fell off the salt shaker while it was being added to the pot. I asked my wife to try it just to see if I was wrong but her face pruned up as soon as it hit her tongue. To salvage the affair I took some of the aforementioned spicy chutney and mixed it in the sauce, which allowed me to salvage the rest of my pork in disappointment. I only mention the vindaloo first because it was the first dish brought to us, but shortly thereafter the rest arrived and their star regained some of its luster.
The Samosas were definitely the highlight of the meal. Plump little buggers and stuffed with as much flavor as you could imagine, I took my sweet time applying a little bit of everything to each bite; raita, tomato rasin chutney and all the other chutneys within reach. The Okra was an unexpected delight, though there was only so much of that I could handle, crisp and cool raita or not. The Dal wasnt anything too exciting, but then again; its Dal. Lastly was the Bhel Puri, something my wife was never brave enough to try during our six months in India. She loved it. I took a couple stabs at it and thought it was pretty damn good too.
I know Kingfisher isnt exactly a craft beer but I ordered it for the nostalgia and to that end it did its job just fine. My barteneder wife said that her Pimms Cup was exactly what it should be. Despite the setback with the vindaloo, I would absolutely come back to try the Goan Shrimp and the Chicken Curry. And if those are a success, perhaps revise this review to note that and probably make the pork vindaloo debacle a side note at the bottom of this. With all this place has going for it, I would love to make that happen.
Grade: B- (This could easily change for the better once I learn what and what not, to order)
...First up was the Goan Style Shrimp ($10.50): shrimp with curry leaves, chile, coconut milk, and lime served with saffron rice. One of my favourites, and not too spicy. We also ordered the lime BBQed Corn (I overheared a regular rave about it in the line. She was right!), Portuguese influenced Pork Vindaloo (fork tender) and deep fried Okra with Raita (it made vegi hater, John decide that okra isn't that bad, woot!) .
All in all, Bollywood Theater certainly has the atmosphere for somewhere to hang out with great, inexpensive food and be distracted by the art. We both recommend you dropping in one day to eat!

Oh wow! Portland you have done it again. The Bollywood Theater has to be one of my top places when in PDX. It’s a similar concept to Pok Pok except for Indian cuisine. The cuisine and setting transports you were in a Mumbai or New Dehli (disclosure – I’ve never been to these cities so please don’t call me out too cold ☺). When here I just said give me one of everything popular. Why not huh! I’m vacray and I’ve never seen and smelled Indian cuisine so colorful. I just put my faith in the system and went along for the ride. At the least you must have the pork vindaloo and Thali plate. Peep the 8 minute HD video on the site to get a closer glimpse into the world of Bollywood Theater. Previous post Brimmer & Heeltap Leave a Reply Click here to cancel reply. An homage to Indian street food, this rustically decorated little gem looks like it was slapped together from junkyard finds—rough-hewn woods, multi-colored collection of bottles catching the light through the large windows. Customers wait at a counter to place their order from the killer menu. My favorites include crispy julienned okra with raita dipping sauce, aloo tikki (a potato patty served with chickpea cholle and a tasty green chutney), vada pav (a spicy fried potato dumpling served on a roll with chutneys and known as “the poor man’s burger of Mumbai”), and kati roll (paratha flatbread stuffed with meat, pickled onion, and more of that tasty green chutney). Small curry plates and expansive thali meals are also available. All this, and cold beer, fussy cocktails, and great rock music, too!
Best decor and atmosphere of any Indian restaurant . You need to order food the counter and gets delivered to you table. Roll and Fried Okra are the staple of this place. Rest of the food options are ok at best. If you are looking for authentic Indian food - look elsewhere. Decent Americanized Indian food. They also have a small shop with Indian spices and other Indian items.
I HIGHLY RECOMMMEN VADA PAV!!
Vada Pav here is by far the best I have ever had!! I might be forgetting, but I don’t remember having such a great vada pav even in India. I have been eating at least one vada pav every time I visit either of Bollywood Theater locations since 2019 and the taste has been consistently great. It has improved over time if anything at all. My wife loves Pav Bhaji also here. Other than Vada Pav, I recommend Paneer Kathi roll and chai! Excellent ambiance and amazing service.
Excellent twist on traditional Indian fair. The food is very fresh and the spices for each dish are exotic and took me straight to flavor town. Might I recommend the masala margarita! Such an interestingly delicious bev. The walk-up counter service is actually quite nice, we arrived at 7:30PM on a weekday and it seemed like the rush had just died down — short wait and plenty of tables. The interior is thoughtfully decorated and feels quite cozy. I’ll definitely be coming back here!
Ordered the South Indian curry and Chai, they were both great. Excellent spice levels and good for two people to share with an extra side of rice. The Chai was great for a sore throat. The atmosphere reminds me of a Disney imagination of India but in a good way.
I absolutely love Bollywood theater. No other restaurant in Portland has given such excellent food that shows how delicious Indian food can be. This is one of the few restaurants in Portland where you very commonly see people of this heritage actually eating at the restaurant that is making food from that heritage.
The food is amazing, the drinks are great, the service is very reasonable and easy and the design of the restaurant is top tier. The lights and outdoor seating options just add so much variety. This is one of those places where you go once a month and it's the best treat. Couldn't recommend enough, the Thali meals are amazing.
super unique vibe here. small, but very tasty selection. I had the chicken curry and one of the brews. also pictured is the fried okra which comes with some of the best raita I've had. cool little stop if you're shopping in the area.
The decor was eccentric specially the bathrooms. They have a limited menu. Most items we ordered tasted great. The Vadapav and Pav Bhaji were favorites. Bhelpuri is also another vegetarian option. My husband tried the chicken curry and thought it was alright. The lemon lime soda was refreshing.
I’ve tried to find a great Indian restaurant and I think I finally found one! I’d been wanting to try Bollywood Theater for a while and it lived up to my expectations. Loved the pork vindaloo (and it really wasn’t that spicy) but what I’m still thinking about is those delicious buttery rolls! Oh man…now I’m thinking about how delicious that meal was and I’m wanting it right now… 🤤
Excellent ambiance and tasty food. We liked vada pav, fried okra, pav bhaji and kathi roll.
Kati roll wasn’t traditional but tasted good.
Love this spot. Great place to watch a Bollywood flick and eat tasty Indian street food. They have a big space for indoor seating and covered outdoor seating. The pork vindaloo is amazing and the beet salad is a great palate cleanser for in between the tasty hot dishes.
